I haven’t watched the TV adaptation of “Daisy Jones & The Six” yet, but I remember reading the book at the beginning of 2021 and it was such an all-consuming read that I could momentarily escape the stress of the pandemic and my post-grad depression and anxiety. I’m not going to lie, the destructive behaviours of Daisy and Billy are way too familiar to my life. But my favourite character, who I felt the most for, is Camila. I will always love and feel for Camila. / / / / #booktok #books #booktube #daisyjonesandthesix #daisyjones #taylorjenkinsreid #bookish #bookthoughts #bookstagram #reader https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpd_EAtrrJs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Idk what ❄️ Donna Tartt put into The Secret History but I read it for the first time back in November and haven't been able to stop thinking about it so here I am, rereading it. Also, at first I was like, Oh my gosh, they're plotting to kill Bunny??? Halfway through I was like, Oh I get it.

“Tristran sat at the top of the spire of cloud and wondered why none of the heroes of the penny dreadfuls he used to read so avidly were ever hungry. His stomach rumbled, and his hand hurt him so.
Adventures are all very well in their place, he thought, but there’s a lot to be said for regular meals and freedom from pain.”

I just made this edit because well I need your opinion on it, this is the only way I could think of giving my protagonist a happy ending otherwise he dies, no other way about it because well it's the protagonist's problem and this is the only solution I came up with

“I will see you in the stars, Tyler Jones.”
Aurora’s End. And what an end it was.
This has got to be the first book to have me flat out sobbing over a freaking pen. If you know you know. But damn it. That moment had me in tears of joy/heartache/relief. Gah.
Finian is probably my favorite character in the end. His sarcasm, his wit, his confusion about the Hippos. I adore him. Zila is an excellent character too and definitely doesn’t get enough credit.
And this book as a whole was, an emotional journey. And I think it ended pretty damn perfectly. And as Zila says, “I am not feeling nothing.”
I felt each character grew and evolved from the beginning of the series to the end. They were never stagnant and it was a pleasure and a half to read. Each POV voice was so unique.
The plot surprised me, and with every twist and new danger I was captivated and anxious and excited to see where it would lead.
I’ll be honest though, I stopped really caring about Aurora by the end. I cared about her for Kal’s sake, but otherwise she was just…too…hmm…power-flated? I dunno. But here were six other characters to care about and I didn’t feel much for her.
This series has definitely become one of my favorites and I can’t recommend it enough. If you enjoy Sci-Fi, strong characters, and a well formed plot that may or may not involve time travel, read this trilogy. You won’t regret it.

[mostly fairly oblique bookthoughts: cw for mention of antisemitic & racist pseudoarchaeological/conspiracy theories]
hm. done with atfots. much enjoyment, some dubiousness, many thoughts.
contemplating (not even critically, just, like, thoughtfully) what constitutes a sufficient & satisfactory Plot. cf le guin on conflict, probably.
also contemplating like. tension between (1) interpersonal visions i'm glad & grateful for in a world-expanding sort of way, & (2) the way in which those visions' non-normativity does pretty directly make them not the key to the lock of my in-certain-ways-very-normative heart. (which is fine! not everything has to be for me! but to some extent my reading practice is for me, so, you know. just like. thinking thru my relationship to that aspect of the text.)
also really not sure what to do with the minor-but-recurring 'ancient telepathic underground dinosaur people' joke. like i'm not actually sufficiently up on my david icke to be sure how much it does or doesn't map onto that nastiness, and honestly i suspect it's maybe closer to von däniken in certain ways, but like. why are we splashing around in the shallows of insidious conspiracy theory land and framing it as just a funny joke it's fun to keep referencing. not real thrilled abt that aspect of the book & wondering what if any discussion there's been of it.
[…fwiw, did go back after i wrote that last graf and poke at the various mentions of the above theme in the text and like. arguably the joke is meant to be that this belief is a delusion based on certain historical truths that got lost/twisted, thus underscoring that it's Obviously Nonsense, but. idk. feels a bit to me like the book's other various coy references to ~historical~ homophobia/transphobia/binarism—like, what are you doing being cutesy about this. why are we going there at all. will we be getting anything out of this that's worth having our bruises poked like this. personally i can't say i did.]

other than law books
I had an old tumblr account that I left dormant until (if I'm not mistaken) last year when I finally deleted said account but what do ya know, I'm back with a new one. I have the same instagram handle btw, @otherthanlawbooks as my book account.
Why @otherthanlawbooks? I just was sick of having to read law books after doing bar review. I took the PH bar exams in February this year after four postponements so I was really so tired and so done with it and by the time I finished the bar, I've decided to take on reading (mostly) fiction again. So books but not law books = other than law books. That's the best I could think of. Wow. Yes. Do not judge, that's that.
So basically, I didn't want law books or anything about law to be my personality but again, what do you know, it kind of backfired.
Anyway, I've decided this account could be my reading/binge watching diary 'cause I can't seem to do it on instagram. I will be posting my #bookthoughts and #bookfeels about my 2022 Read list. I am hoping I can find a tumblr reading community as well.
Oh and btw, I'm Gel and I'm aware I'm talking to no one here right now. Just allow me to document this. *Cringe*
Taylor Swift, in her NYU 2022 Grad Speech (https://www.elle.com/culture/celebrities/a40037720/taylor-swift-nyu-commencement-speech-transcript/ said: "Learn to live alongside cringe. No matter how hard you try to avoid being cringe, you will look back on your life and cringe retrospectively. Cringe is unavoidable over a lifetime. Even the term ‘cringe’ might someday be deemed ‘cringe.’"
