Penultimate question for the year, and one we will confess we had been dreading putting a hard answer on since long before it being asked here. From MedusaCarmilla, to Leonastra:

How long did it take to earn your rings from the college in Castine? What was that process like—like long bookstudy, or closer to an apprenticeship?

Leonastra:

At this point I hold six of a possible ten rings of mastery from the college of Metallurgy. Or five of nine and the ring of mastery. Which you can collect for any five of the nine. See, I'm exclusively a blacksmith, I'm not a whitesmith, or a red smith and those skills are two of the four rings I don't have, along with the specific jeweller's ring, and the mage smith's ring. I mean, I'm obviously good enough to put things like Coruscant or the bond rings together, but it's not my trade. I have rings for smithing bladesmithing, armoursmithing, magically-enhanced-smithing, sparksmithing, and for blacksmithing. These were all practically examined over about a week a piece at the college, along with another more general . . . 'exam' that included some teaching for my sixth ring. Honestly, for things at that level, especially coming in as self-taught rather than college-educated, they basically want to get to know you and your skills before putting their name against them. I did end up with some recommended reading when I was looking at going for them, and I did read that, or had before. I will read for craft and sometimes for pleasure. But I've always been more practical than academic-- Okay, before I say this, remember that I am fire-proof, but my grandfather had me smith my first knife before I would say I was truly comfortable reader. It might have been a while before I came back to it. But I was so chuffed with that knife, ate with it for years, and my parents got a bit grumpy because it meant I refused to properly learn chopsticks. Back on topic though, the college of metallurgy is incredibly practical, with anvils in class rooms and and teaching in forges, it was a delight to see, but they don't skip on book learning and teaching too, being able to understand it all is a very valuable skill, but not one everyone needs, so they pursue whatever works for people. Or the case of external candidates like me, they look for a level of knowledge, expertise, and skill that conveys mastery, and accept that that looks different from individual to individual. But, oh gosh, to actually answer the question, either seven weeks, or three hundred years, depends how you want to look at it.

Reviewing the chapter on the third agreement, "don't make assumptions" for the book study I've been facilitating and this line hit me especially hard. I've been in a few conscious couplings where I felt I couldn't be myself for fear of rejection or failure of the relationship. Sooner or later the relationship would end anyway and I would realize that I had been wasting precious energy trying to be what they wanted me to be when it would have been easier to find someone who loved me just the way I am.
