It’s been a while…
…since I posted anything here. Writing life had continued to be quiet as the effects of the pandemic unwound themselves in schools and libraries. I’m delighted to be out and about again now though doing events, and even more delighted to show off my new book, hot off the presses today! From Cells To Ourselves tells the story of evolution, something I’ve wanted to write about for a long time.…

A bedtime story
Based on @idoodlestuffsometimes ' AU
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Original painting: Reflection in Blue by Eva Bonnier
Mad Lord Metanoy had never been someone to fall asleep easily. Everyone in the castle knew that. During this past week in particular those who guarded Metanoy's room would hear more footsteps and more broken pottery than usual during the night. More screaming, more throwing books.
Nobody knew what caused this sudden change in behavior, but the guards seemed to enjoy speculating about it.
Hunter knew. That last mission was tough. He knew he should have done a better job covering those new scars he had. He knew how his father usually reacted to him getting hurt and now he had to deal with the consequences.
He hated having to hear everyone around him talk about his father as if he was just a hassle, but most of all he hated knowing that he was the reason why his health was worsening.
He knew that going into his room without the Emperor's permission would surely grant him a punishment. Maybe he would be sent into another dangerous mission. Maybe he would be forbidden from seeing his father for a month. Maybe he would have to experience the physical consequences of one of his uncle's outbursts. He didn't care. The only thing in his mind was making sure that his father was alright.
When he opened the door he thought for sure that his father must have initially mistaken him for one of the guards. He saw his expression quickly change from anger to relief to concern.
- Hey, dad.
- Hunter, my fledgeling, what are you doing here? Did your uncle give you permission to enter?
Hunter paused
- Yes. - He lied. - He told me to check on you. To make sure you were asleep.
Metanoy knew he was lying. His brother would have never allowed him to visit without his supervision. Hunter noticed this and fearing he might get kicked out he quickly tried to convince his father.
- Dad, please.- his expression clearly concerned - You haven't slept for more than a week, please let me help. I know you're worried about me and because of that... - A tear started rolling down his cheek - It's my fault you've gotten worse and I just want to make it up to you, so please let me help you. I...
Soon more tears came out. Metanoy, who was sitting on his bed reached to Hunter's face with his hand and wiped away the tears with his thumb.
- Hunter, my boy. My beautiful fledgeling. Please don't say that. It's not your fault and it never will. I'll rest if that's what you want but please stop blaming yourself. You did nothing wrong.
After tucking himself into his bed Metanoy looked around his room and pointed to one of the few books he hadn't thrown out of the shelves.
- Maybe I could use a bedtime story.
Hunter, now more calmed, grabbed the book. He recognized it, it was his favorite book from when he was a kid. It wasn't a story book, but a book about birds, filled with pictures and fun facts about different species.
He sat down next to his father and started reading. Maybe it was because this was the first time they had been together without the Emperor controlling every single one of their interactions, maybe it was because of all those sleepless nights, but Metanoy soon started to relax himself, his eyes slowly closing and a small smile appearing on his face. He was thinking about all the good memories he had shared with Hunter, about how much he loved his son.
After a while Hunter started to feel sleepy himself. He looked around the room trying to keep himself awake. He looked at his father, now peacefully asleep. He looked at the candles, illuminating the room with their warm light. He looked at all the books that his father had thrown out of the shelves. He looked at the book he was holding, wondering why it wasn't on the floor before, and then it clicked. The reason why it was the only one well placed on the shelf.
- I love you too, dad - he whispered looking at him before completely closing his eyes too.
In the morning his uncle would find that he was not in his room. In the morning his uncle would punish both of them for disobeying orders. But for now, they were together. They were asleep. But most importantly, they were happy.
So, this was my first time writing what could be considered a short fanfic. Hope you all enjoyed it. If some sentences seem weirdly structured to you please remember that writing isn't my thing and that English isn't my first language.

Untitled Wednesday Library Series, Part 121
Next week (or so) should be the Moore’s Foundations I mentioned a while back. Doing that justice is gonna be more than I can handle just now — it’s Migraine Mwednesday once again — so we’re doing a little thing the pros call ‘phoning it in’, by which I mean posting on mobile. Convalescence, you understand.
Oceanarium, with text by Loveday Trinick and illustrations by Teagan White. First published in 2021 by Bonnier Books UK’s appropriately named imprint Big Picture Press. An imprint of the same name operates in the US under Candlewick Press, which released this US edition in 2022.

The How
Sea beaſts? Drawings of them? By Teagan White? A gift of yon @krieper, of course.
Actually it’s half of one — the other half was a second, identical copy. First one got lost in the mail for a while, was refunded, then eventually showed up anyway. It’s free book estate. two_of_them.meme and so on.
The Text
Trinick’s ecosystem and taxa summaries are easy reading in an aquarium sign or kid’s book kind of way, which is exactly the point. Four of four stars on that front. The full index, complete figure keys, and some external links keep it from feeling too simple, which I’m personally grateful for. I suspect this sort of copy is red meat for editors, but without the extra polish I worry I’d have been too dull to notice the quality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Object
@girlfriendsofthegalaxy likened last week’s feature to the sort of large dog to which you might say ‘oh BIG boy’. I grew up with some of those. I also — briefly — grew up around emus. This is more like those. What the fuck are you supposed to do with this much bird?
Tumblr media
Teagan White’s work on this is superlative. Many of their arrangements (along with broader design choices, like the monochrome chapter bumpers) feel very comfortable for at least one reason I can think of. I don’t mean to say it’s not fresh — it is — but rather that it has a rich sort of flavor.
Also rich are the typesetting and printing. Lavish, really, which makes sense given this is part of a relatively upmarket collection. The heading font (Mrs Green) struggles a little for readability in large blocks, and Gill Sans is…well, we don’t have time to get into Gill Sans. I love the italic serif numerals (Modern20 BT, a relative of one my personal favorite typefaces) for keys. Fit and finish is everything. Real premium shit.
The Why, Though?
Because it’s a gift of yon @krieper, of course, and also because why not? A little redundancy’s never hurt anyone, nor has having a backup.

Society of Authors calls use of bad reviews for book blurbs ‘morally questionable’
After several critics complained of being quoted out of context on the covers of Jordan Peterson’s new book, the industry body has spoken out against the practice
Tumblr media
by Ella Creamer
The Society of Authors (SoA) has spoken out against publishers misrepresenting negative reviews on book covers and the UK publisher Bonnier Books is producing a “best practice” document for blurbs, after controversy over the use of reviews on the cover of the Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson’s book Beyond Order.
On 15 August, prominent writers criticised the way their reviews had been quoted on the back cover of the paperback edition of Peterson’s book, published by Penguin Random House. The Times columnist James Marriott tweeted an image of the cover featuring a quote from his review that appears to endorse the work. In the now deleted tweet, he wrote: “Incredible work from Jordan Peterson’s publisher. My review of this mad book was probably the most negative thing I have ever written.”
The quote attributed to Marriott read: “A philosophy of the meaning of life … the most lucid and touching prose Peterson has ever written.” The actual phrase from Marriott’s review is: “one of the most sensitive and lucid passages of prose he has written”, a description specifically about one chapter in an otherwise almost entirely negative review.
In a similar vein, Johanna Thomas-Corr, literary editor of the Sunday Times, tweeted that her quote featured on the book (“Genuinely enlightening and often poignant … Here is a father figure who takes his audience seriously. And here is a grander narrative about truth, being, order and chaos that stretches back to the dawn of human consciousness”) was a “gross misrepresentation” of her review, calling for it to be removed. In a Sunday Times comment piece on 20 August, she wrote: “Beyond Order is an awful, mad book – you shouldn’t buy it.”

US legal embargo on Revenge?
I hate being tin hatty but I think the only explanation I have is that there is active litigation going on preventing the book’s distribution in the US.
The book is published by Blink, an imprint of Bonnier (a large-ish European media conglomerate)
I looked up other Blink books published recently - you can go to their IG and see the titles - and looked a few of them up on Amazon US. They’re all available - Audible, kindle, whatever. (The title I looked up was Opening Doors by Reggie N.)
The Book Depository is actually an Amazon company and is listed as the fulfillment partner on a number of UK published books for Amazon US.
And yet, you can’t get it on Amazon itself but you have to go to Book Depository directly. There’s also no other American bookseller like B&N selling it either.
basically, run this little exercise: look up a recent book published by Blink UK on google and you’ll find multiple US sources for purchase: Amazon: Audible, Kindle, book itself (fulfilled by Book Depository), Barnes and Nobles, and others. You won’t find anything on Revenge unless it’s a direct UK headquartered seller shipping to you overseas.
GUYS!

what are sone of your personal favourite romance books??? as in absolute favourite
No! No no no! You did not go there! You do realise this is a very biased list, right?! 😁 I don't mean biased because everyone has a different favourite, but because when we talk about romance as a genre, it means a different kind of book to everyone, still the genre is decided by publishers. Not only fantasy, contemporary, historical, and dark romance etc., but like one of my favourite romance books is not even romance! It's political fantasy with a romance subplot, still it belongs to romance, because for some unknown reason someone decided to market it like that.
Yes, Hot Keys, Bonnier Books ltd., I'm looking at you! 😅
Anyways, you asked, so you shall receive! 😁 Keep in mind, this is my personal opinion, they are not in order and my taste changes faster than you can blink, so I take no responsibility.
‘Heloise the book addict’ masterlist | Heloise’s map
Side note: I know I always add trigger warnings, but like I'm so damn tired, please check trigger warnings for yourselves this time here or here. I'm so sorry, but I honestly don't have the energy to go through them all.
So, let's begin;
The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black (The whole series which belongs to The Elfhame series by Holly Black, same world setting, different couple)
The Cruel Prince #1
The Lost Sisters #1.5
The Wicked King #2
The Queen of Nothing #3
How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories #3.5
In January 2023 comes out the companion duology of The Folk of the Air series, The Stolen Heir duology, with its first book, The Stolen Heir: A Novel of Elfhame which will then be part to The Elfhame series.
I am a complete and utter simp for Cardan. You can tell me how you didn't enjoy the book, how the romance was barely there or how it was too political. Nah, don't care. I love politics, I study business after all. I love fantasy, and it was fantasy and more. Romance? Wasn't there? We all have a different expectation when it comes to romance. I'm a character and romance focused reader and it was still simp-worthy for me. Everyone can judge for themselves, but I am a sucker for Cardan and Jude even if I'm still slightly mad at Jude. 😅 However, objectively speaking, it is a political fantasy and should not be marketed as fantasy romance, but because it is, it's now on my list.
Electric Idol by Katee Robert (Book #2 of Dark Olympus series. Kind of a stand-alone, but the books are somewhat linked.)
Other books in the Dark Olympus series include;
Book #0.5: Stone Heart [Medusa and Calypso]
Book #1: Neon Gods [Hades and Persephone]
Book #1.5: Hades and Hades [Hades and Persephone; a Patreon short story]
Book #2: Electric Idol [Eros and Psyche]
Book #2.5: Zeus and Hera; a Patreon short story
Book #3: Wicked Beauty [Achilles and Patroclus and Helen]
Book #4: Radiant Sin [Apollo and Cassandra]
Book #5: Cruel Seduction [Aphrodite and Hephaestus and Adonis and Pandora]
Book #6: Untitled [Charon and Orpheus and Eurydice]
Book #7: Untitled [Minotaur and Ariadne]
Book #8: Untitled [Poseidon and Icarus]
Book #9: Untitled [Hera and Zeus]
Book #10: Untitled [Hermes and ?]
The series is contracted for 7 books as of now but Katee said even if something happens, all 10 books that have been promised will be published. I might add, she said it because fans are going crazy over Zeus and Hera. I'd also like to add that once Zeus and Hera's story is out, you bet it will be on my list because I've been a sucker for those two since the very first book!
I'm a sucker for Eros and Psyche's relationship. He is a simp for him, but they start off along the lines of "I should hate you, but f*ck it, I can't" and I am here for it. It is very spicy, like the plot is pretty much just there in the background, but the characters themselves, the banter, the chemistry, the witty remarks make up for plot that's lacking a bit. Many people started this book off as "meh" only to come out simping. It'll make you swoon if you let it. 😅
The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren (Stand-alone)
It was a funny, witty, enemies to lovers but also not, but also yes, with a lot of swoon-worthy moments. I love this book, it honestly makes my little heart swell. 😁 It's one of those little books that has a plot, but doesn't require you to use your brain much. Just a simple little read. I'm still mad about the conflict though, it made me quite pissed off. 😅
The Summer King Bundle by Jennifer L. Armentrout (Book #3.5-3.7 of A Wicked Trilogy, consists of 3 novellas: The Prince #3.5, The King #3.6 and The Queen #3.7)
Wicked #1
Torn #2
Brave #3
The Summer King Bundle: #3.5-3.7
The Prince #3.5
The King #3.6
The Queen #3.7
The Summer King bundle is basically a collection of 3 novellas that follow a different couple, though it is heavily connected to the series. I liked the Wicked Trilogy, it was a good read, but The Summer King Bundle stole my heart. Caden and Brighton are just so sweet together, they gave me cavities. It's full of drama, so not a sweet little paranormal fantasy romance, but I loved it.
A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J. Maas (The whole series except ACOFAS; I still can't get over that one scene, makes my stomach churn)
A Court of Thorns and Roses #1
A Court of Mist and Fury #2
A Court of Wings and Ruin #3
A Court of Frost and Starlight #3.5
A Court of Silver Flames #4
This whole series made me so immersed, I finished the books in 5 days. 5 days when I was hella busy. I was reading like a maniac and only so many books can do that to me. Although Azriel's book didn't come out yet, I'm such a simp, that SJM could literally write the worst book about him and that book would still be on this list.
And last, but not at all least, the person who introduced me to paranormal/fantasy romance books back when I was 14!
J.R. Ward (I'm a sucker for this woman's writing! I own almost all of her books, except 3. But no, it shouldn't be read under 16 😅)
Black Dagger Brotherhood series
Black Dagger Legacy series
Black Dagger Brotherhood Prison Camp series
The Lair of the Wolven series
Fallen Angels series
Though my absolute favourites are—
Lover Eternal (Black Dagger Brotherhood #2)
Lover at Last (Black Dagger Brotherhood 11)
Blood Vow (Black Dagger Legacy #2)
Blood Fury (Black Dagger Legacy #3)
She writes paranormal fantasy romance with male leads that make you swoon. She writes diverse characters, back stories, personalities and her whole writing is brilliant. I know I'm biased, but she is amazing! Each story is about a different couple, but the books are interconnected so they have to be read in a reading order which you can find here.
Well, that would be all for now. My brain is not functioning well. I hope you'll find something you like <3

Dom Phillips' agent and Bonnier Books UK to ensure murdered journalist's work ‘was not in vain’
Tumblr media
The agent of murdered journalist Dom Phillips, Rebecca Carter, hopes the book he was working on for Bonnier Books UK’s Manila Press can be “salvaged and published” to make sure the work that he did has "not been in vain”.
On 1st June Phillips set off from his home in the city of Salvador to embark on a journey to the Lago do Jaburu region of the Amazonas state with friend and guide Bruno Pereira to research the book How to Save the Amazon.
They were last seen on 5th June, and their bodies were later recovered. Three men have been arrested in connection with the crime, one of whom has confessed to murder, the Guardian reported.
Margaret Stead, publisher at Manilla Press, said: “We are all deeply shocked and appalled at the deaths of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira. We are thinking of his wife and family at this very sad time.
“All of us who met him were touched by Dom’s brilliance and determination, and the powerful message he wished to convey in his book, How to Save the Amazon. We very much want to find ways to honour Dom, and his essential and important message.”
Rebecca Carter, his literary agent at Janklow & Nesbit, said: “The murder of Dom Phillips is a deep blow not only on a personal level to the many people whose lives were touched by him, but also to the ability of writers, journalists and environmentalists to pursue their crucial work in safety. I feel hopeful that some of his book can be salvaged and published, and I know that there are many excellent and skilled people who want to help make that happen, to make sure that all the work that Dom did, and the risks he took, have not been in vain.”
