I was tagged by @haahka to deliver the good news of these self-defining TV shows! Wahoo alright let’s go - in alpabetical order so no one feels shafted
1. Bojack Horseman
The terrible tale of a washed up actor from the nineties trying and failing to regain their mojo - also he’s a depressed horse. Equal parts comedy and devastatingly morose commentary on the human condition. If you finish it and need more please go check out Tuca and Bertie.
2. Chernobyl
It’s the story of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster! Woohoo everybody party! I’m sure nothing depressing will happen and we’ll all be feeling extremely normal by the end. (Is the best bit of television I’ve ever seen though)
3. House MD
Hilson shown for...reasons. Anyway I haven’t watched this show in years, I am comstantly battling a demon on my shoulder telling me to change that BUT I say say with great confidence that it’s a foundational text of my media enjoyment. The terrible tale of a drug addled doctor who gets away with eye watering quantities of malpractice due to him being the only guy who can solve medicine’s toughest riddles. Proceedural television never felt so good
4. Red Dwarf
The terrible tale of the last human in the universe waking up from stasis more than a million years since the rest of the species died off. Dave Lister is stranded on the space ship that was his place of work for the rest of his life, with nothing but a gobby computer, a creature that evolved from his pet cat, a robot and a hologram of his dead bunkmate. Yes, it’s a British comedy from the early nineties. Yes, there are only six episodes a season. Yes, there’s a laugh track. Wait, come back! Where are you going I thought you wanted to watch Red Dwarf!
5. Steven Universe
The terrible tale of a boy who lives with a piece of his dead mother so visible on his body that most of the galaxy expects him to fulfil her destiny rather than writing his own. The funny thing about Steven Universe is that people are still so mad about it for so many reasons but it remains one of the best TV shows of all time so who’s really winning? Don’t watch unless you can handle kids shows trusting their audience doesn’t need everything spoonfed to them lmao
6. Succession
The terrible tale of a family who couldn’t lose everything if they tried, and the kids who failed to keep themselves together. If you’re following me and don’t know this show by now then you need to start putting in more hours on tumblr. Also, that’s Tom!
7. Taskmaster
A despotic control freak and his extremely pathetic and wet assistant force people to compete in a variety of cruel and unusual tasks. Some for the game show to turn your brain off to, stay for the most insane dynamic between two men that you will ever have seen. Then, once you’ve polished off all 15 seasons of the British version, go and enjoy the international Taskmasters. This ride is never going to stop because they’ve discovered the perfect television formula
8. Twin Peaks
The terrible tale of Laura Palmer, who washes up on the shore of a lake, already dead, and then we get to learn everything about her. TV nerds the world over are ready to gush about this show at a moment’s notice and it’s with good reason. One of the few pieces of anything that really can more or less be all things to all people. Plus, it’s a David Lynch show so it’s weird as hell without apology
tagging @valoricky @crustacean-frustrations @hickeywiththegoodhair @duelsong @holy-yeosang @tomshivyuri @fuckyeahashes @bby-daesung and anyone else who feels like sharing. You can do it or not. It’s fun to talk about things you like though!
"BOJACK HORSEMAN" SEEN FROM PSYCHOANALYTIC CRITICISM
Alternative title: The view from halfway down.
Por Ángela Tapia. (ig: angela.tap)
“But this is it, the deed is done.
Silence drowns the sound.”
Bojack Horseman (2014).
Sigmund Freud's reflections on psychoanalysis and human behavior have always been considered curious and controversial —to say the least. On his book, Introduction to Psychoanalysis (1916), he first talks about this idea that enforces us to believe that the origin of the individual unconscious lies on the notion humans have of where all their pain come from: this place being experiences and emotions, fears and sick desires that never really have a chance to come out. (page 12, Tyson L., 2015.) The psyche becomes the through key to understanding where it all begins, how it develops, and why it is so hard to make it stop.
Bojack Horseman —an animated Netflix series that walks us through the life and struggle of a burn-out TV star on Hollywood, that gets constantly involved in drama, suicidal idealism, alcoholism and many more (very harmful) isms, is not only a story that critics the entretainment industry, but also takes its time to destroy its main character by giving it the most profound, raw and rotten wounds one can find in their own unconscious.
“One day you’re gonna look around and realize
that everybody loves you but nobody likes you.
And that is the loneliest feeling in the world.”
From B. H. Season 3, Episode 5.
Along the story, we see Bojack and various other characters around him get dragged into uncomfortable situations as a consequence of Bojack's unfortunate —and egotistical— decision making. His past experiences with various losses and heavily repressed family trauma have broken him to the point he’s become a selfish, narcissistic individual, that even when he tries to be good, he can’t seem to find in himself any kindness to give out to the world. The self-definition Bojack internalized of his persona as he grew up, led him to hate his own mind and actions the same way he used to hate and avert from his mother and father’s relationship towards him, and each other. (page 14, Tyson L., 2015.)
“All the damage I got isn’t good damage.
It’s just damage.”
From B. H. Season 6, Episode 2.
Not recognizing where all the damage that he’s gotten has come from only keeps him on reliving the same cycle of abuse, depression and chaos that plagues his life and the ones of those around him. Until one can not acknowledge the root of our deep unresolved conflicts, we’re doomed to live in despair, feeling no longer worthy of being considered even humans. Bojack’s selective perception and memory reflect from his trauma, and in a way protects hi, from it, guiding him to a life full of denial and a constant feeling of displacement. (page 15, Tyson L., 2015.)
Only when he starts to recognize, remember and share everything he’s gone through, is that he finally starts to heal. But sometimes, healing is just not enough, and for him, the thanatos (page 22, Tyson L., 2015) consumes his heart little by little, regret by regret, sins and mistakes crawling on his back as he tries to enmed them on a daydream of repentance. His relationship with death is an inharmonious one, that comes from guilt and tastes like old cigarettes and cheap liquor, the same bitter way they would taste to a child that’s been forced to try them.
“—Is it terrifying?
—No, I don’t think so.
That’s the way I did it, you know?
Everything was coming to an end.
The drip finally stops.”
From B. H. Season 6, Episode 11.
Where did we go wrong? When is it too late? Is there any way for anyone to really be saved?
It might be a good idea to start with taking a look at the terrifying parts of ourselves we’re too scared to even meet.
And maybe then, we should all think about how meaningless everything turns out to be,
when you finally realize that there is no other side.

2) When was the exact moment when you realized just how much you admire animation as an art form unique from other media?
Honestly I fully believe the EXACT moment arose when I rewatched The Secret of NIMH for the second time as a 14-year-old. I had already enjoyed it when I first saw it back when I was 7, but seeing it again with a maturing brain and a finer eye for the craft of 2D animation really made me appreciate how well made the film was, both in terms of technical achievements and story
Of course, this also lead to the faithful event of me looking up the trailer to the movie on youtube and seeing in my recommendations a trailer to a film I had never heard of called Watership Down. I clicked on that video, and the rest was history ;)
7) What is your favorite cartoon series?
Fuck that's too hard of a pick! If I was forced to, though, I would probably swap between Bojack Horseman and Spongebob Squarepants (Seasons 1-3) depending on whether I'm in the mood for depressing or joyful eccentric animal people 🐴 🧽
8) What was the first adult animation you’ve seen?
The very first one HAD to have been The Simpsons. While it took me until I was 9 to actually become obsessed w/ the series I know for a fact I caught it on TV several times before when I was younger
While Simpsons most likely predated it, I do have a very clear memory of the 1st time I ever saw South Park. I believe I was either 5 or 6, seated all alone in the living room at my nanny's house while everyone else was in the kitchen partying, and while flipping thru the channels I caught the last 10 minutes of the episode where the boys and Jesus Christ try to save Santa Claus from a group of terrorists, at the scene where Jesus riddled with bullets and dies. The funny part about it was that I wasn't even scared by it. I legit thought I was watching a serious drama just because Jesus was killed in front of a group of children and just accepted it XD
10) When did you first discover anime?
Technically the first anime I can remember watching were Hamtaro and Pokemon, with Yu Gi Oh following shortly after. However, the first anime I watched after learning what the term anime meant was Death Note. It was a pretty significant moment for me since it was the first cartoon I ever got obsessed with that wasn't made for children, and thus taught me that animation isn't something that's exclusive to kids like me. After that I absorbed as much "mature" anime as I could find to show off how cool I was (and by mature I of course meant shows for teenagers lol)
it's kind of upsetting that it took two decently popular shows being cancelled (inside job and dead end) for people to realize how truly fucked the industry for animation is, and how animated shows and movies are so underestimated and dismissed compared to their live action counterparts :/
animation takes a lot of time and work to pull off, and it seems that companies don't want that, so they:
a.) split seasons in half to pay their animators less (they did this with the cuphead show and [what was supposed to be] the first season of inside job)
b.) falsely renew the shows for another season then cut them short so the already developed parts don't see the light of day (again- inside job. back when we got a preview for part 2 in netflix's geeked week stream, shion had delivered the news that the streaming service ordered a second season, and then this year in early january, that decision was reversed. they did this with bojack horseman as well, but cancelled it before they finished season 6, so they had to wrap up their work quicker. disney initially cancelled the owl house after season 2, so dana had to BEG for those 3 episodes we got of season 3.)
and c.) cancel the show and make it a tax write off, removing the episodes from tv, streaming, and other stuff (final space. with this one, there were physical copies of s1 and 2, but not any of season 3. the dvds sold out unfortunately, so the only way to watch final space is illegally.)
so... you can see what's up here. companies truly snuff out any hope for anything these days, huh.
if you are willing to. all of the favourite ones. <3<3 i love you

Sorry this is late but I had to think up a writing prompt with the help of Google. I hope you can be able to write some of these in your free time. I love seeing posts from you even if you don't post everyday. I have to do some of these promts for artwork so I know the struggle of coming up with ideas. You don't even have to write daily you can do once a week or once a month just to get in the groove!
Now these can be about any fandom you feel comfortable writing live action or animated. Even movie films can be included. For example:
Anime: AOT, JJK, Demon Slayer, My hero Academia, Naruto, Spy x Family, One Pice, Black Butler, Castlevania, Hunter X Hunter, SK8 the infinity, Beastars, Komi Can't Communicate, Blue Period, etc.
Netflix Animated Shows and Movies: The legend of Korra, Blood of Zeus, inside job, Love death and robots, the midnight gospel, Bojack Horseman, Arcane, and even avatar
Popular live action shows: Stranger Things, The Witcher, Game of thrones, Lord of the rings, The Hobbit, the mandalorian, The boys, Breaking bad, Waking Dead. Etc.
Popular Live action Movies: Everything everywhere all at once, parasite, Squid Game (AU), Star wars, Avengers, Pirates of the Caribbean Jurassic Park, Fast and Furious, Mission Impossible, James Bond, etc.
There are many many more but don't limit yourself to one fandom or even one film! They can be short poems, a long script, based in an alternative universe you name it!
You don't even have to do this list in order it can be in what ever order you wish!

OMG did you make this prompt list yourself? Thank you so much!
I'm defo gonna refer back to this cause it helps to write something else when struggling between chapters.

Sad horse show is over and I am NOT okay. This last part of the season is so jarring and real. It finished it in one sitting. Which is something i rarely do. jfc

When Judah told Princess Carolyn he loves her I got up out of my seat and ran away from the TV from how overwhelmed I was with emotions. That was too wholesome for my heart to handle but I love it
A little reenactment of me watching that dreadful cliffhanger from Bojack Horseman Season 6 Part 1. Christ these couple of months are gonna hurt to wait through. Can’t even begin to imagine how they’re gonna wrap this all up.
