Recently rewatched Star Wars Resistance Season 2 Episode 3, "Live Fire", and it's such a good demonstration of all the various kinds of pilots in Resistance and how good the show is at illustrating the difference between them. There's subtle difference between all of the pilots of course, but there's two main really glaring distinctions: First Order vs Resistance/non First Order pilots, and Yeager & Kaz vs the Aces.
The difference between Yeager & Kaz and the Aces is really fascinating and also officially spells out one of the best subtle details in Resistance - Kaz is not as good at racing because of his combat pilot background that he still uses. Kaz struggles with racing flying throughout the show because he isn't a racer or thinking like a racing pilot - he's a combat pilot and he flies like one and thinks like one. And in reverse, the Aces aren't good in combat because In a race, every ace is capable of beating him handily. In a combat scenario? Kaz and Yeager pick them off effortlessly because that the kind of piloting they are best at and have been taught. Kaz loses races all the time, but in situations like in the first season fighting the sea monster? Kaz is clearly far more at ease with flying in that situation than the Aces. And the race later in the season 2? Kaz wins that not only because of the knowledge gained about the course through watching the Aces fail to go through it, but also because what with the mines, being shot at, etc., it's more of a combat situation and that's what Kaz is good at.
Sidenote - I always find it fun that Griff is the one who is most apprehensive about their chances in the training exercise. It makes sense; having been in the Empire he's well aware of what Rebellion pilots were capable of working together and he knows this will not end well for the Aces.
A minor addition to that is the difference between Yeager and Kaz as pilots is one of experience and leadership skills. Yeager's a Rebellion veteran, and you can tell - he's comfortable with being in command and giving orders to his fellow pilots in a way that Kaz isn't. He's also a little more adaptable to strange circumstances such as a giant creature trying to eat them - he saw a lot of wild things during the Rebellion so he's (less) phased than Kaz. Yeager as a pilot is who Kaz could be in the future.
The other main difference in pilots is, of course, the difference in how the First Order treats its pilots in training and how the Resistance/literally everyone else does and "Live Fire" does a great job of showing those. Yeager is so matter of fact when says of course they're not going to use live fire on each other. For the Aces, it's a given that they wouldn't be practicing with live fire because why would they? One of them could get hurt/their ship could get destroyed and that would not be good. And what's really to be gained from it?
In contrast, the First Order doesn't care if they lose a trainee in an exercise because of "friendly" fire - in fact that's preferable through some kind of "survival of the fittest" mindset. Tam preventing Rucklin's TIE from crashing into the Star Destroyer bridge also prevents a possible catastrophe and shows that she's a good pilot with good leadership skills - but because she shows compassion she loses squad leader.
Tam doesn't fit in the First Order survival of the fittest mold and it's a very early indication that Tam will leave the First Order - she's not like them and she could never be because her first instinct is to help her fellow pilots instead of leave them for dead, and that makes her a better person and pilot than any of them could ever be.
"Live Fire" does a great job of showing all of this and that's definitely a part of why it's one of my favorite Resistance episodes!

Aboard the “Colossus”, an old space-faring refueling station, the work week finally started to wind down. The massive dagger shaped ship drifted silently through the Velus System trying to avoid any unwanted attention. Inside Aunt Z’s Tavern it was anything but silent. The rowdy evening crowd began to pour in through its old and rusty sliding doors. The hodgepodge of various different species living together in harmony aboard the “Colossus” made it an exciting and unique place to call home. The high tops, booths and
bar stools begin to fill and the sounds of laughter and glasses clinking together begin to fill the room, the weekend has finally begun! Belly pushed tightly up against the bar a tall, green, and handsome Duros boy waited patiently for his drink order. “Order up for Norath Kev!” Belted a tough looking Gilliand female in a frumpy dress uniform with matching fighter pilot cap. With a flash of perfectly white sharpened teeth, Norath grabbed his order from the bar top. “Thanks Aunt Z, I…” before he could finish his sentence he was interrupted with a firm smack on his backside. Norath whirled around to face his assailant, he frowned at the face he saw. There, grinning like a Tooka Cat was his friend Hugh Sion. “One of those drinks had better be for me!” Hugh exclaimed. “You’re lucky I had my hands full or I could have decked you!” Grumbled Norath, with a heavy sigh and a shake of his goggle adorned head, he smiled and passed his friend a “Bespin Fizz.” “Made with the finest Ryloth Rum in the galaxy, only the best for you Sion.” Mocked Norath, as he clutched his own drink, a “Fuzzy Tauntaun” tightly in his hand. Norath hated to admit it, but he was not a seasoned drinker, light weight might even be an understatement. He was tall and lanky, not a trace of body fat on him, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to learn the young Duros couldn’t hold his liquor. The two Resistance fighter pilots and best friends joined their group in a booth towards the back of the tavern. In the dim bar lighting Norath could see Hype Fazon, a male Rodian also known as the “Green Ace” from “Ace Squadron.” The “Aces” were a crew of racers that also acted as the first line of defense for the refueling station. Hype wasn’t a bad guy, but he could be loud and obnoxious at times which was pretty much the polar opposite of Norath’s own reserved and quiet personality. Sitting next to Hype was his friend Kazuda Xiono, a new addition to the “Aces” and a Resistance spy like himself. Kaz was awkward and naive, clumsy and accident prone, but he had a huge heart and would do anything for his friends and loved ones. To Kaz’s left loomed the intimidating figure of Griff Halloran. Griff was the “Black Ace” and an ex tie-fighter pilot for the Imperial Navy. He was muscular, with silver hair and two matching imperial insignia tattoos on his biceps. Griff, along with the rest of the “Aces” had helped him escape The First Order’s clutches, but he still felt unwelcome by the ex-imperial and wasn’t entirely sure why. Sitting across the table from Griff was Bo Keevil. Bo was the “Yellow Ace” a Kel Dor male, he was quiet and calm which was probably why he and Griff seemed to get along as well as they did. The eclectic crew looked up from their drinks as Norath and Hugh approached the booth. Kaz was the first to greet them. He flung himself up and over a protesting Hype and launched himself face first into his two friends. Hugh caught Kaz before he could face plant on the old wooden floors of the tavern. “Whoa! Thanks buddy!” Exclaimed Kaz as he held on to both Norath and Hugh for support. “You owe me a drink for saving your life just now.” Joked Hugh as they took their seats at the booth. “Hey! Don’t get greedy now! You haven’t even finished the drink I got you!” Yelled Norath over the buzz of Aunt Z’s Tavern. “I don’t just let ANYONE smack my ass and then buy THEM a drink!” Hugh chuckled and took a long swig of his fizz. “I bet that was the most action that you’ve gotten in a while Kev!” Teased Hugh as he took another sip of his drink. Norath scoffed as he plunked a straw into his “Fuzzy Tauntaun” and began to take little sips. Aunt Z was heavy handed tonight, she put extra peach schnapps in his drink, he’d have to be sure to take it slow this evening. “How’s your juice Kev?” Teased Hype as he swirled around the last bit or Rodian Rye in his glass before downing it in one long swallow. Hugh choked on his drink and nearly spat it in Hype’s face trying not to laugh at his friends lack of alcohol tolerance.

Three Kijimi Spice Runners!” Whirred the droid tender as he slid the glasses across the bar. Norath snatched the largest of the drinks and began to drain the cocktail in long swallows. “Whoa there Kev, there is a lot of booze in these Spice Runners!” Warned Hugh as he reached for his own cup. Norath wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and took a deep breath trying to steady his growing embarrassment. Kaz looked just as confused as Hype. “I’ve never heard of Cad Bane either.” “Ha!” “That guy is a washed up old man. He was bounty hunter scum before and after the Empire. He must be a million years old if he’s even still alive that is.” Came the gruff voice of none other than the Black Ace himself and ex-imperial navy commander, Griff Halloran. Norath whirled around on his bar stool, teeth bared in a defensive snarl. Golden eyes burned in the dim bar lighting. “He is still very much alive.” Snarled Norath as he locked eyes with Griff’s steely grey stare. “He was on a job on Dantooine 2 weeks ago. I saw him when Jade Squadron flew in to escort new recruits off the planet.” Norath in the midst of a rage didn’t realize how close he had gotten into Griff’s personal space. He had crowded all the way in to the muscular pilot, almost brushing chests. Teeth still bared and eyes flashing with anger, Norath was ready for a fight and Griff had no problem indulging him. Before either could strike Bo Keevil, a fellow Ace, a Kel Dor male, grabbed Griff by the shoulder and pulled him away from the young Duros. Hugh taking Bo’s advice yanked his friend by the scarf away from the impending danger. Griff’s icy glare still on Norath’s allowed himself to be lead away to a booth at the far end of the tavern. “What is your problem, you have a death wish or something? Griff could have destroyed you!” Screamed Hype. Norath scoffed and drained the rest of his Spice Runner in silence. “Another?” Questioned Glitch. “Yeah, and make it even stronger.” Answered the cranky Duros. Kaz rested a comforting hand on his shoulder. “It’s ok, I get it. It’s hard to hear people say horrible things about someone you obviously respect so much.” “Griff is just…well…Griff. I’m sure he’ll come around eventually.” Another even stiffer Kijimi Spice Runner slid across the bar in front of Norath and he welcomed the comforting burn of the alcohol and the numbing of his senses. Hype ordered a drink and headed to the back of the bar to be with his fellow Ace’s. The three Resistance fighters continued on as they were until Norath let out a sudden gasp. “He’s here! He’s aboard The Colossus! Why? What business could he possibly have on this sleepy little refueling station?” Maybe his eyes were playing tricks on him. Maybe the drinks were even stronger than he thought. “Don’t make it obvious, but in the corner near the Sabac table? Is that who I think it is?” Whispered Norath to his companions. Hugh nonchalantly turned his head to the left appearing to be stretching out a crick in his neck. He returned back with his findings. “Why yes, I do believe we are in the presence of a celebrity. It is none other than Cad Fucking Bane himself.” Hugh smiled at his star struck friend. “You gonna go over and introduce yourself?” “I…” Norath saw Bane seated in a private booth in the darkened corner of the tavern. The neon ceiling light hanging over the Sabac table illuminated his handsome and mature features. His wide brim hat hid his ruby eyes, but his sapphire skin, unique facial scars and breathing apparatus gave his identity away. A glint of light bounced off his matching LL30 pistols and his long blue fingers wrapped around his glass of whisky. “You might never get another chance to meet the man.” Coaxed Hugh. Norath bit his lower lip, downed the rest of his drink and began the slow purposeful walk towards his idol. “It’s now or never Kev.”

When you love the Kel Dor and Togruta so much that you wish they were real...and then you're sad because you just realized that they are only real in your mind, and you wish they actually existed in the real world, so you cry in your bed while cuddling your pet.
....That's me, right now....
