Side Order Observations about Acht

Some reiterating of points, an analysis of our New Canon, some speculating on the timeline, and a little bit of headcanon.

So first and foremost to reiterate, I really feel like a lot of people are overfixated on the idea of Acht's reaction to Marina and Pearl's relationship being funny. To me, after going through everything, it feels like they're genuinely just trying not to be discomforted by it.

Consider the fact that Acht pretty clearly displays a low self esteem, after everything; a part of why Marina's escape hurt Acht is because of a sense of abandonment- one has to imagine they would feel like they weren't worth saving. Especially given that Acht sunk low enough to become sanitized willingly.

I dunno. To me, none of this really reads as "funny", it's tragic. And there's nothing really to do about it- Pearl is obviously a great partner for Marina- it doesn't feel like Acht has any animosity towards her. A lot of the Funny Jokes about Acht being a Hater feel very rotten to me as a result.

I feel like there's a great amount of meaning to Acht finally being able to sing with their own voice. Mind you, a decent amount of that has to do with my own complexities with my voice, but as someone who had their worthlessness cemented into them their entire life, it's a big step to be able to move forward and present your true self openly.

I don't mean to sound like I'm just venting that people aren't appreciating Acht enough, but it really feels like a lot of people just take them as like a Funny Joke Character and don't take them seriously at all. A lot of this story is about Acht's struggle with self worth. The difference between suffering in silence as long as it meant things were stable, or changing everything into an uncertain future for the sake of bettering things.

I can't help but wonder if Acht somehow fought their way into being here- as I've established previously, it's very nebulous how exactly Acht got *into* the Memverse. But beyond that, the fact that they had made #35 caught is strange, too. One has to assume timeline-wise this happened before Side Order, but... how? If reports of the low-tide party can be considered canon, their music was there as well.

It might be related to the fact that they bring up Pearl's killer wail during the finale of Octo Expansion- seemingly, that was able to reach them while they were sanitized. Perhaps that was able to return some amount of control to them? Likely not entirely, but enough to ambulate without external orders, perhaps.

It's also very strange, to me, that Acht somehow managed to be hurt prior to Eight's arrival, and moreover, that this injury seemed to incapacitate them? While I'm at it, a few theories for that:

Acht's lack of their own Palette (as mentioned in my previous post, due to sharing one with Eight, theoretically) causes them to not actually be considered by the program as a Real Person, and as such, it just doesn't Heal her.

Acht got hurt, and simply Gave Up. Seeing no way to handle this threat on their own and not really having the willpower to fight it.

The story of them getting hurt by a Jelleton was a lie, for whatever reason, and the scar already existed one way or another. After all, the Jelletons don't exactly seem capable of physical injury like that?

Each theory offers an interesting amount of potential, and ultimately it could go either way. Regardless, the cut is very strange.

So, where does Acht end up after everything, exactly? It's kind of implied that Acht did, in fact, go on the world tour with Marina and Pearl and Eight. Again, I have to ask- Marina, Pearl, and Eight all entered intentionally, where was Acht? My only real idea here is back with the "Eight and Acht share a soul and ergo this process automatically pulls Acht in too" theory, so I have to presume she's still in the NILS statue, one way or another. But going off of the map, there's evidently a subway line that leads to the deepsea now, so I have to presume it wouldn't be TOO hard, but it'd still be a bit of an ordeal to find her and get her out on her own. Just a tidbit of writing I'll definitely do once I fic this all out.

But where does Acht go afterward? I can't really help but want to just also put her with Marina and Pearl. The language of her letter implies they don't immediately live together, though. I can't really imagine Marina and Pearl wouldn't do SOMETHING to help Acht integrate into normal society, though. Then again, Acht does produce music which, evidently enough, is at least moderately popular. It's not out of the question for her to get her own place, nor is it out of the question to imagine, as much as Acht loves The Gang, they wouldn't want to feel like a burden on them, regardless of that actually being possible given their Immense Mountains of Wealth. Either way, I don't think I can come to a conclusion here, I'll have to think about it.

I just love love love Acht so much and I really hope that people appreciate them as much as I do. Even if I am greatly biased.

🎂 Dude I apologize for all the asks but my Clears brainrot is so so so bad,,,

Gears watches all the Babish videos that pique his interest, and he feels… really okay with himself when Babish admits to messing up dishes, or doesn’t get things right the first time. He decides to choose a recipe and make it for him and Clef. He decided on the pasta alla vodka, since it seemed pretty simple and he had a grasp on what to do, and it was similar to the pasta and sauce dish he made. He purchases the ingredients (his fridge now looks like a person lives in his house), and starts making the recipe, as well as some frozen garlic bread that he bought on a whim. It felt silly of him to do so, but he reasoned that if he was going to be putting in so much work on the sauce, he might as well have something to sop it up with. He makes the sauce from scratch and grates fresh parmesan on top of it.

Clef arrives just as he’s finishing the pasta, and it’s… amazing. It smells great. Sure, the recipe is pretty simple, but or the second dish he’d ever made, and the first one he’d made completely on his own, it’s excellently done. Clef tells him as much, and Gears gets a little pink in his softened cheeks.

“I simply followed the instructions in the video, and kept in mind the things you told me. There was little left up to intuition or skill.”

“Hey, none of that. You should be damn proud of yourself, it smells delicious.”

“…I am proud,” Gears shyly says, as if he’s realizing it for the first time, “but it’s so simple, I feel like I shouldn’t be proud.”

Clef wants to say he should be proud of everything— this Gears looks so different from the man he met. He looks cozy, in a burgundy sweater and khakis instead of a starched white shirt, scooping the pasta into two bowls for them, before slicing the garlic bread he got them. He’s not skeletal anymore, chubby and soft in ways that made Clef want to squeeze the life out of him like a teddy bear, and he looked more alert, more alive. He looked like he was healing. Clef smiles, Gears setting a plate in front of him.

“You should be proud,” Clef says, “I sure as hell am.”

I LOVE CLEARS!!!! They are so precious. Gears mental health improving because he's actually enjoying a hobby and he's eating food he enjoys without fear of getting sick! Clef just happy to socialize with him and get closer <3 they mean the world to me

The piece I posted today is probably the closest I can get to your request, since they are in bed together. I am really not good at drawing scenes (and especially drawing light) yet, so unfortunately I'm not sure I can really produce a "morning" scene. I'm sorry.

As a gentle reminder, I've only been drawing for around five months. I still have a lot to learn! I hope that you enjoyed the piece I posted today, and maybe when I am better at drawing scenes in the future, I will be able to draw one that is closer to your vision.

Thoughts about Suffer No Fools/Deep Cut in general

I really dislike this whole 'shiver and frye mistreat Big Man' plotline they seem to be making with deep cut. Like, from the start they've set up that Shiver and Frye don't really appreciate Big Man, but outright having their own duo group without him just kind of feels needlessly petty. Like maybe I'm looking into this too hard, but it's also, literally the only thing one is capable of looking into with Deep Cut's canonical information. Like... Big Man is already working at a disadvantage of being a male idol who isn't humanoid, it feels kind of pointlessly cruel to pit him alone against Shiver and Frye. And it's not like Shiver or Frye are any better for it.

They keep focusing on this one trait, the fact that Shiver and Frye are very very hostile to non-splatlandians. I would love to actually enjoy Shiver and Frye being openly aggressive, that's unique for an idol's personality, but rather than feeling tough, they just feel pathetic, trying way way way too hard to look intimidating.

Again, this isn't necessarily the fault of any particular writing of Deep Cut, but rather the complete and utter lack of any meaningful lore about them.

The squid sisters are hard-carried in the personality department; they get the entirety of Splatoon 1, 2, and 3's story mode to show off their personalities.

Off the Hook started out less interesting than the Squid Sisters, since they had to rely on newscasts, but even before Octo Expansion, the fact that Marina was an Octarian was an obvious huge deal from the moment she was revealed, with the splatfests revealing the gravity of Marina's abilities. Of course, then Octo Expansion happened- Octo Expansion feels very directly like it was created for the express purpose of fleshing out Pearl and Marina to make up for them not being in the main story mode. And of course we have Side Order that just doubles down on developing them.

Deep Cut's inclusion in Splatoon 3's story is just like. The most obligatory presence possible. Somehow, despite having direct boss fights, they leave absolutely zero impact whatsoever- it doesn't help that they don't sing their boss music, but they're also just there for no reason to steal "Treasures"- completely nondescript objects of no apparent value whatsoever that have no particular meaning to Deep Cut. No elaboration is given as to why Deep Cut wants this treasure in particular- Alterna is fucking littered with human technology that's infinitely more valuable than a bunch of random metal scraps. There are giant 3D printers just sitting around. And their dialogue is just... complete nothing. As stock as possible, there's nothing to gleam about any of their relationships from anything. Like...

A small aside: The reason why Squid Sisters and Off the Hook are such interesting groups is because of their group dynamic. Callie and Marie have a very deep bond that gets tested and validated after their separation, and Pearl and Marina are just a perfect duo. I'm not even a big shipper type of person but their relationship is so wonderful to see. But what even is Deep Cut's relationship? They're friends? With the way Shiver and Frye treat Big Man it feels like their entire relationship is pure business, and it's honestly more depressing than anything else.

Anyways, getting back to Deep Cut in the story mode, they say one unique piece of information about them- that they do this to help people who are suffering.

This is a fantastic direction to take Deep Cut, and would make their hostility towards inkopolis feel much more cathartic and justified.

They literally never mention it again or elaborate on it any further. Why? What are they even referring to? Poverty? Octarian oppression? General social imbalance?

The lack of elaboration about why Shiver and Frye are so prideful and so hostile, and what sort of suffering they care about, really stands out to me in Suffer No Fools.

Suffer No Fools feels like Shiver and Frye just aimlessly attacking strangers they're completely out of their depth with. The only thing we know Shiver and Frye care about is helping the misfortunate.

With that being the case, Off The Hook are literally the last people on the entire planet you should want to start beef with, even if it's just play-fighting- and in realizing this, I've realized something else about Off The Hook and Deep Cut:

Off The Hook already fills Deep Cut's niche.

Like... Pearl and Marina are the perfect duo in terms of representing social progress. Marina obviously has a very personal reason to care about impoverished octarians- she was one of them, she fought to get to the surface. Pearl, on the other hand, is the perfect emblem of an inkling, extremely privileged due to being born into great generational wealth. However, after meeting Marina, Pearl decided to put her all into using her privilege to elevate Marina's voice as much as possible. And, in doing this, creating Off the Hook, they have had a very real, tangible impact on the acceptance of Octarians on the surface. And this isn't even touching on Octo Expansion- they go out of their way to save Eight, of course, but since then, Marina put her everything into figuring out a way to save the sanitized octarians stranded in Kamabo Co.

Meanwhile, Deep Cut's actual contributions are left entirely unelaborated and unspecified. No known efforts to figure out anything about the Mammalian octarians, literally not a word spared about them.

What the fuck do they have to be proud for? What have they ever done for anyone? All I see are some stuck up egomaniacs who have no respect for anyone who isn't an asset in getting them more money. It honestly feels less like Shiver and Frye are these charitable robin hood figures and more like that was a lie to cover their asses.

...And, of course, I expect this to change in the next Splatoon game. It would be unthinkable for Deep Cut to just have no relevance again after getting nothing in this game. This is a very pessimistic outlook on Deep Cut. But they've given me absolutely nothing to work with, it's difficult to think that characters are good people if you only ever show them being unjustifiably hostile and greedy.

It just sucks. Shiver and Frye are my favorite idol designs, but they're constantly made out to be so fucking lame, and not even in an "underdog group of failures that cares about eachother" sort of way because EVERY DEEP CUT THING HAS TO BE THEMED ABOUT HOW DEEP CUT HATES BIG MAN AND EVERYONE ELSE.

I don't suppose there's any way to clear off the big blue "NEW" tag on the store icon? I mean, I've seen the store, it's pretty cool! I've browsed through it! I even bought some crabsmas gifts for people. It'd be nice if it only showed "New" if there was a product on there that hadn't been seen yet (like clearing the new post or activity bluetext).
