RUDE CATHAY PACIFIC CREW FIRED: I HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE! (2023.05.25.)
The biggest news in China yesterday was the case of a passenger who recorded crew from Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific being extremely rude and discriminatory towards people from China's mainland. The story blew on on social media here in China, and now the airline has announced that three of the cabin crew have been terminated.
BUT the funny thing is, I had a similar experience of absolutely rude Hong Kong crew when I spoke Mandarin on a flight a few years back. Today I'll share...
Jeny SHORTS Being a Chinese from HK, I'm shock and feel so sorry for the bad experience those went through like Andy. This is not acceptable at all
Derrick Truong We moved from Boston and lived in HK for work about ten years ago, one day my wife and I met her co worker who was Caucasian and his wife was Korean for dim sum, my wife and I arrived to the restaurant first and we asked for a table for 4 in Cantonese, the hostess told us it will be about one hour wait time, the co worker arrived a few minutes later and his Korean wife asked the same hostess for a table in English, and she immediately had a table for us. Some of the people in HK still have a mind set that English speakers are more superior than their own native language speakers not to mentioned if you speak in mandarin, which I find it very sick.
E L Hi, I'm a Cantonese native speaker and my mandarin is not so good but I can tell you that there is definitely widespread discrimination from many Hong Kong people. This is mostly HK Chinese, not mainland Cantonese people in Guangdong region. It has mostly been caused by British colonialism, class and education created from a colonial education system. That had caused not only HK Chinese to hate themselves as Chinese but to alienate them from the Chinese identity.
It misleads them to think that they are exceptional to the racism against Chinese by being a colonial power and being a subject is somehow is better. English was only internationalized by colonialism and imperialism yet its a still a world minority language. Some HK Chinese are still living in a colonial times and haven't gotten the memo that colonial mindset is a real step down. They are second class to western exceptionalism and westerners are no longer dominant or number 1 anymore. Go figure where they have placed themselves in modern society. They need to evolve and liberate their minds.
Gold Nugget It was highly insulting for these staff to take that attitude. Their job is to serve the passengers, without them they would not have a job. To serve the passengers well, they MUST be able to communicate with the passengers, therefore serving on these air routes at least some must be able to speak Putonghua (Mandarin). To insist that passengers speak English when asking for assistance is a total unacceptable, insulting, abusive and demeaning.
It is descriminatory and it is akin to saying "No dogs and Chinese allowed" during the British colonial time in Hong Kong/China. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those responsible for these racism were Hong Kong Chinese, who are native Cantonese speakers, able to speak aa few words of English and either refused to speak or don't know how to speak Putonghua thinking that they are superior to the mainland Chinese passengers.
Cathay Pacific MUST take note, when recruiting staff, make sure the staff understand that customers are King and they pay their salaries and they must be able to communicate effectively and clearly to help the customers (passengers). And staff serving Chinese air routes, they MUST be able to communicate in Putonghua.
Craigslist Seller I am part Chinese born & raised in Hawai'i. I've encountered similar experiences flying business class on China Airlines back in the late '90s-early 2000s when I lived/worked in Taipei. I would return home periodically throughout the year. I found if I spoke English, the flight attendants were noticeably more polite to me. I love China Airlines, but learned to only speak English while in the cabin. Racism against their own is not exclusive to Chinese, but I learned from this experience, that some Chinese-Taiwanese look down on their own in light of heavy American influences on the island. It's rather silly.
P. Chan I had a few experiences with Hong Kong Chinese during my university days. I am an OBC, with English as my first language and mandarin as my second language. Hong Kong students would pass insulting remarks about us -basically that a Chinese person who cannot speak Cantonese is worse than a dog. And the waiters in the Chinese restaurants which were mostly ran by Cantonese in Soho were extremely rude and impatient with us but were so courteous to the other obviously white patrons. My instinctive dislike of hongkies and the Cantonese language have persisted to this day.

Any thoughts on Clone and/or Jedi language?
Too Many of them 😅
The biggest thing on my mind for trooper languages right now is that Jaster was a Journeyman Protector and so was Jango's bio dad, so Boba, the Alphas, and any CCs or CTs the Alphas trained directly most likely speak JP dialect Mando'a like Bacara does. I have sound change rules written up for converting standard Mando'a to JP but I need to finish transliterating the established dictionary before I can feed everything to Vulgar and generate the remaining vocabulary.
I think besides Mando'a, the clones probably haven't been exposed to many languages besides Galactic Basic and various common languages like Shyriiwook and Gand where the speakers can't translate themselves due to structural differences in the vocal tract.
For Jedi, I've created [counts on fingers] four? Sleheyr, Kimpian, Dyungzilyu - three! I've created three languages for various slave communities in the galaxy (inspired by fialleril's Amatakka) that are spoken by different members of the Jedi Order. Not all of them, as they're all closed languages, but enough that there's a sort of cultural exchange going on in the Temple. Those that aren't rescued slaves themselves are trusted rescuers who have been taught by Elders.
Sleheyr uses custom phenomes and is spoken by the Prosmyi (sky-children) of Sleheyron and is integral to my OC Taio Pallas. Kimpian uses Farsi phenomes for the most part and is spoken on Nar Shaddaa and in one of my WIPs, Nico Diath offers to get permission from an Elder to teach Eeth Koth, who was born a slave in my headcanon. Dyungzilyu uses Mandarin phenomes with slightly different spelling (but just as many diacritics) and is spoken on Bandomeer.
I'll actually share a snippet real quick. This is a giant time and dimension travel groupchat epistolary fic. This is 10yo Anakin (one year post-TPM) and 49yo Obi-Wan (eleven years post-RotS), while Taio is from 1½-2 years post-AotC and is the same age as the Anakin in her time. Aayla, Eeth, and the clones are from one year post-AotC while Nico is roughly three years pre-AotC.
Anakin Skywalker: Yithai, bliv gey yi kid muv beyng thev mim. Okay! I’m gonna practice it!
Taio Pallas: Don’t forget to tell your teacher that you want to meet me and Kalo, he’ll be able to schedule it with Master Nu. You’ll also need to tell him you have a tracker and need to have it removed, he probably doesn’t know.
Kenobi: I can confirm that he does not. Also, Anakin, if you want to get his attention, call him yēngun. It’s Dyungzilyu for teacher.
Taio Pallas: You too?
Kenobi: Unfortunately, I had an eventful Padawanship.
Windu: Bandomeer was your initiatehood.
Kenobi: That, too. Really, though, it was only a year.
Taio Pallas: Mine was only two, and I don’t remember it. You were trusted enough to be taught the language, which makes you one of us.
Aaylas’ecura: Ca jehsa eyi ca jehsa eyi ca jehsa eyi
Eeth Koth: Jee-jee vaa tula goola.
Anakin Skywalker: U settah huttese?
Eeth Koth: I do. I don’t remember if my people on Nar Shaddaa had their own language or what it was. I was three when my parents abandoned me on the streets instead of killing me like Master ordered, and four when I was Found. I only know that much because I told my Finder and they remembered and made sure to tell me when I was old enough to ask.
Nico Diath: Could’ve said something. You want Kimpian, I’ll see if I can find an Elder or Keeper on my way back to Coruscant, get permission to teach you.
Gree: So many culture, language, and history subchannels, this is great.
Taio Pallas: And of course the Vode are welcome, too, since you all come from a background of slavery.
8826: Well I wanted to but now that you’ve said something…
Gree: Don’t be a bastard, Neyo.
Bacara: He can’t help it, it’s his one setting.
Taio Pallas: I thought it was funny.
Anakin is practicing a Sleheyr greeting for meeting a fellow slave for the first time. Aayla is saying "one of us one of us one of us" in Ryl, and Eeth is saying "we can start a band" in Huttese, after which Anakin asks if he speaks Huttese.
I do also think the large number of languages spoken in the Temple results in a lot of mixed metaphors and a constantly developing creole formed primarily around Force-based jargon. Pretty much every Jedi is canonically multilingual, but this would be yet another reason for it.
Besides that, I'm a huge fan of the already existing Dai Bendu, which I hc is also a ceremonial language for Miralukka due to their shared history with the Jedi Order. (And I've crafted a fully developed Miralukkan common language as well. And a Kel Dor one. And a less developed Trandoshan one.)
If I let myself talk about languages any more, I'll never shut up. 😅 Thank you for the ask! This is one of my passions and another of my special interests (as I'm sure you cannot tell (sarcasm)) so I always love talking about it.

Sutor, ne ultra crepidam
Sutor, ne ultra crepidam is a Latin expression meaning literally "Shoemaker, not beyond the shoe", used to warn individuals not to pass judgment beyond their expertise. The expression led to the term ultracrepidarianism, which is the giving of opinions and advice on matters outside of one's knowledge.
Its origin is set down in Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia [35.85[1] (Loeb IX, 323–325)] where he records that a shoemaker (sutor) had approached the painter Apelles of Kos to point out a defect in the artist's rendition of a sandal (crepida from Greek krepis), which Apelles duly corrected. Encouraged by this, the shoemaker then began to enlarge on other defects he considered present in the painting, at which point Apelles advised him that ne supra crepidam sutor iudicaret[1] (a shoemaker should not judge beyond the shoe),[1] which advice, Pliny observed, had become a proverbial saying. The Renaissance interest both in painting and classical antiquity made the expression popular again.[2]
A related English proverb is "A cobbler should stick to his last".[3] The Russian language commonly uses variants of the phrase "Суди, дружок, не свыше сапога" (Judge not, pal, above the boot), after Alexander Pushkin's poetic retelling of the legend.[4] A related proverb is found in Spanish-speaking countries: "Zapatero, a tus zapatos" ("Shoemaker, [tend] to your shoes").[5]
The saying remains popular in several languages, as in the English, "A cobbler should stick to his last"; the Dutch, "Schoenmaker, blijf bij je leest"; the Danish "Skomager, bliv ved din læst"; the German, "Schuster, bleib bei deinen Leisten"; the Polish "Pilnuj, szewcze, kopyta", (the last four in English, "Cobbler, stick to your last"); the Spanish, "Zapatero a tus zapatos" ("Shoemaker, to your shoes"); and the Russian "Суди, дружок, не свыше сапога" (Judge not, pal, above the boot), after Alexander Pushkin's poetic retelling of the legend.
Karl Marx ridiculed the idea: "'Ne sutor ultra crepidam' – this nec plus ultra of handicraft wisdom became sheer nonsense, from the moment the watchmaker Watt invented the steam-engine, the barber Arkwright the throstle, and the working-jeweller Fulton the steamship."
Ultracrepidarianism
Ultracrepidarianism is the behavior of giving of opinions and advice on matters outside of one's knowledge
The term ultracrepidarian was first publicly recorded in 1819 by the English essayist William Hazlitt in an open Letter to William Gifford, the editor of the Quarterly Review: "You have been well called an Ultra-Crepidarian critic."[7] It was used again four years later in 1823, in the satire by Hazlitt's friend Leigh Hunt, Ultra-Crepidarius: a Satire on William Gifford. Occasionally the word "ultracrepidarianism" was used later.

SPEECHLESS
And you said to me: If you love me, then say you love me And you are mine Hey come on darling, stop the hiding Speak your mind
FLOWERS
From the day until the day we throw it all away Let's talk about it 'cause I cannot live without it Your love, it means so much to me Can't you see? Right here, I'll always be
BLIV LIDT ERDNU
Du nødt til at føle at du lever Så lad mig tage dig væk, før det er for sent Jeg ka se du visner mere og mer Jeg ser det i dit blik, når du sender endnu et Det grunden til du stadigvæk er her
You need to feel that you're alive So let me take you away before it's too late I see you whither more and more I see it in your eyes when you look at me It's the reason for you still being here
I GO CRAZY
I've got no clue what you're thinking You move your hand away from mine Shifty eyes and indecisions Why does this happen every time?
BEAUTIFUL WRECK
But I will be burning for you It's like a forest fire No way to stop it, no, we're in too deep Lying here right next to you I know love's a losing hand But I won't put both those hands on me
DRAGON
All the things we dream and fear Could you be my shoulder awhile I pull off the corner of my eye You... and you told me to fly I don't know how we are close to the sky Wondering why I am blind in the dark

How intelligent do magical creatures tend to be? Are there magical plants? Do they have any special uses? Are they harder to hide from blivs?
You know I haven’t even THOUGHT of magical plants. Omg. The possibilities.
They’re pretty intelligent! The only ones that weren’t so intelligent were shades; they were thought to be creatures of rage and destruction. And they are, but they can also speak and they are in fact sentient. Which no one really knew.
Unicorns and krakens are the more animal-like creatures, and don’t speak. Dragons are more bestial in nature and behavior, but they do speak.
Ask me about my worldbuilding!

Today is a bit of a special day in terms of my original characters.
See, 11 years ago today, I created a little white cat with brown markings who was first known under the moniker of “MimeCat” (originating from the first tiny doodle of a “MimeCat actually trapped in a glass box”, which also was the prototype for his abilities), who would eventually gain his true name about a month later.
His name was Jeffery Darryl Danus, or simply “Jeff” (named for both the species “Geoffrey’s Cat”, and one of my favorite comic book artists/writers), and he would be the final member of the Vestrix Five to be created. He was also Bill and Elly’s little brother.
Jeff was designed to require minimal materials to create items and doodles of on his full pallet, with about 4 or 5 separate colors needed, making it easier to test ideas with, compared to the other characters.
He would be eventually teamed up with an imaginary dog, a creation of his brother’s, by the name of Oblivion, or simply ‘Bliv for short.
Jeff was a quiet character, seemingly mute (a bit of a carry over from his early design that was more mime-like), but actually could speak but deciding often not to, leading even his siblings to believe he was. He was intended as a personal challenge for me to practice emoting with characters, and relying on body language to get his point across.
Jeff, story wise, was the second born son and third born child of Jared Jr and Sheryl Danus, and was a prince to the world they resided, much like his brother. He was 6 years old, and much younger than his siblings (who were 12 and 15), but was quite smart and skilled in his abilities, making it very easy to forget that he wasn’t much older than a kindergartener at the time.
His age made him a bit of an odd one out in the main quintet, but he was in no way a “tagalong kid” or a Scrappy of sorts. He did his own thing, often without the other four, and most often without getting into a situation that was either inconvenient to them or dangerous.
Paired with his best friend 'Bliv, who also shared Jeff’s selective muteness around others, the two offered chances for humorous background events, and a good duo.
Jeff’s abilities, stemming from his early doodles, were what I call “Mimery”, in which he could create tangible things (usually for only his use, though a few times he actually willed a few visible things into existence), and were fun to visualize as something invisible. The challenge was to not God Mod him, so there’s plenty of restrictions in place to ensure that. Among them is that the more complex the subject in question it is, the shorter the time it has before nullifying.
Originally, Jeff was designed with the same physique as his brother, due to my limited skills, but over time, Jeff became leaner than Bill, and was given a few visible frame differences to help thier silhouettes become distinctive.
Overall, Jeff is one of my favorites to work with, and I’m so happy that a decade has passed with him still around. His t shirt exists as a design in my New Leaf game, and in addition to being a popular outfit for my town… Punchy, a white and gray cat who shares the same birthday (and interestingly wants to be a cartoonist), also has taken to wearing it. Yay~
If Jeff had aged, he’d be 17 now, and well old enough to get his learner’s permit to drive. XD

my opinion on your character
Liv is a badass lil cinnamon roll. who can sometimes be stubborn. but honestly it’s endearing as it can be frustrating, and you can’t always fault her for it.
a ship I wish to write
Honestly? Any other iZombie character aside from Liv, as much as I adore her. The iZombie RP community is so small.
I prefer Bliv, but I don’t hate Paine. I do believe Blaine had genuine feelings for her. I’d be willing to write it romantically under the right circumstances, but I’m fine with platonic ships too! I’d love to write some Platonic Paine.
Also? And this may seem a bit unorthodox? It goes without saying Blaine/Ravi interactions are fun, but I’d like to see Blaine/Major interactions.
After their animosity at the end of S1, I was really intrigued by the dynamic of their unwilling alliance in S2. While it was clear they didn’t really get on, neither of them really seemed to despise each other. Blaine’s final interaction with Major, prior to injecting himself with the cure? I think his expression/body language when Major leaves is really telling.
You can see the smarmy Blaine fade away, the sort of ‘put on’ personality that he had while dropping Ravi’s clothes back off at the morgue. He then has the scene with Don E. and Chief, in which he tells them to keep dealing brains for the sake of humanity. He tells them to stop dealing for their own sakes.
They’re both perturbed, but it’s a Blaine who seems to have had a wake up call via his brush with death. Had he not gotten the amnesia? It would have been interesting to see how his and Major’s little partnership would have proceeded.
That said? Major seemed to have some sympathy for the amnesiac Blaine, and even though it was under optimist Blaine? He was the one who proposed Blaine became the man he was due to the environment in which he was raised.
What I’d like to write, and honestly want to see in S3... is a Major and Blaine team up. Major guilting Blaine/demanding he step up and help him find the missing Natalie.
a disliked canon character in my fandom
It speaks to the writing that there isn’t a character I don’t like. I guess if there’s one I can take or leave, it would have been Drake? It just seemed to me like he was sort of a placeholder beefcake boyfriend with little personality. >.>
He was a good man, which makes it kind of sad to say... but it almost seems like they tried too hard to get us to like him. It fell flat for me.
I wasn’t upset when he died.
Even though I maintain it was self defense, and the only justifiable murder Blaine committed?
I did feel for Liv when Lowell died. I didn’t feel for her when she killed Drake. Does that say more about the character, or me?
my favorite part about the fandom
For the most part? The fandom is relatively drama free. There’s no ship wars, there’s no rampant hate.
Even with someone with Blaine, the people who hate him love to hate him. He’s their ‘trashcan son’.
Most people say that, at least. I am aware of one vehement Blaine hater, but haters gonna hate. At least they stay in their lane.
