2010s - city slicker gets a forced bleaching and a very public haircut. I like the fact his eyebrows didn't escape the bleach.
I came up with this scenario in which on the same day every year, in financial districts across the world, bankers and stockbrokers volunteered for a very public hazing. A sort of charity event, during which they'd get absolutely trashed.
The series is called 'Stockbrokers Get Hazed' and I've got a metric shit-ton of these images from the 2020s going back to the 1950s. It combines several things I love: men wearing a shirt and tie getting their hair fucked up in the most embarrassing way, and public haircutting with hazing antics.
So prepare to see a lot of them, lol. Some of them are deeply kinky if you're into this kind of thing [and unfortunately I am, lol!].

Bleached corals ingest microplastics.
Studies have found that reef building corals ingest microplastics when exposed to temperatures above normal.
Tumblr media
Normally, corals rely on the photosynthetic algae on their surface to provide them with energy.
Tumblr media
When temperatures rise, the algae are expelled (bleaching) and most corals eventually die from starvation but some corals start feeding on zooplankton in the water column and in turn also take in microplastics.
So how is this a problem? Feeding on large amounts of microplastics can result in:
Bleaching
Reduced growth as energy reserves drop since plastic has no nutritive value
Reduced feeding on nutritious prey
Tissue necrosis( a coral disease that causes peeling of tissues and death)
Reduced mineralisation of coral skeletons thus reduced growth rates
With coral reefs already facing multiple stressors ; global climate change, ocean acidification and water pollution with a short period for recovery, microplastics could worsen the situation putting the survival of coral reefs at risk.

FROM THE FORBIDDEN SOUP IT HAS RISEN!!!
The things you can do when you have enough gumption and a free day never fail to surprise me. I said to myself it doesn’t have to be perfect and I got a really damn cool jacket.
Jacket: €2,50 at a flea market
Batik dye: free from a pantry
I also still have black dye. Might do something with that soon

BLEACHING REDUCE THE REPRODUCTION OF GIANT CLAMS
As sea warms, corals expel zooxanthellaes, their symbiotic algae, turning white, in a process called bleaching, but others animals with symbiotic algae, as giant clams, can be affected by bleanching too. Bleaching caused by the increase in seawater temperatures causes massive mortalities in giant clams, as they rely in these simbiotic algaes, wich  provide them by the majority of its food source. However, how bleaching directly affects the reproductive performance of giant clams is, to date, unknown.
Researchers examined the direct impacts of bleaching on the reproduction of the giant clam Tridacna gigas between 2020 and 2021 in the Philippines, and found out that bleaching can affect their reproduction. Bleaching reduces the number of eggs giant clams produce. The increasing frequency and intensity of bleaching due to thermal stress can lower the reproductive potential of giant clams and likely other zooxanthellate organisms, resulting in reduced recruitment and population decline.

We tend to treat bright tropical sunlight as an actinic agent that deteriorates and damages structures. And indeed it does. Everything from medicine tablets and liquids, to beach-chairs, wine and of course us, wrinkling under the Sun, are damaged by it.
But on occasion sunlight can create poetry - and purity - as witness the remnants of this crustacean carapace bleached into a beautiful eburnean white by the relentless sun, giving the dead beast a second resurrection as it were, it exhibiting far greater alabaster beauty in death than it did in life, beautifully coloured though it was even in life.
Northern bank of the Gosthani river confluence. May 10, 2010, Bheemili, Andhra Pradesh..

“This is the best teeth whitening product that I have tried, and nope, there are no false promises here! My whiter teeth are proof! I love this. It's effective, and the mouthpiece feels surprisingly comfortable when I wear it. No more experimenting and wasting money on whitening toothpastes, and powders for me. ”

I bleached this flannel over the course of multiple days! Now I'm looking to get a bit of a blood splatter effect because spooky season is here... but also wondering whether that will work. Dunking the entire thing into bright red dye might colour parts pink and I don't want that, but I don't really have a way to check.
