musing on movies in general, long post, do not read if you don't want my rambling opinions on cinnamontography or whatever

anyway

my kingdom for a spider-man noir movie (by which i mean Spider-Man Noir, the 1920s spider-man, but i also mean, a noir movie about spidey in general, even modern) in the vein of the Batman and other modern and neo-noir films instead of this ugly, poorly lit stuff the MCU keeps putting out

sony!! sony do you hear me?! (disney do not interact) i want black shadows and strong lighting used to lead the viewer's eye, purposefully obfuscate things, and only reveal what the movie wants the viewer to see when it wants the viewer to see it. i want to see two eye lenses and nothing else, looming in the darkness...

(tasm2 tie-in game actually did this really well, ironically; visually that game is not bad, but the menace system makes it almost unplayable for me 😔which is unfortunate cause it's clear how much more polished it is than the first game (which i enjoyed despite its tendency to crash)) (though i was disappointed they removed the auto-web button that lets you web-dodge up to a vantage point)

i am looking forward to the next ITSV movie, i just know that will look good as hell

this post as turned into a long ramble about cinnamontography and movies i've seen recently so if you care you can read it but otherwise XD probably not worth it

but imo birds of prey and the batman are probably the best looking live action superhero movies i've seen since 2014 (probably not a controversial statement XD) both have stellar cinematography and choreo.

batman is heavy on the blacks and stark contrasts and using the shadows to hide things until they want you to see them (thus my fave minor moment: batman materializing seemingly out of the darkness, as if he was born from it) and it really nails its aesthetic imo. i've seen some criticisms of its darkness but i feel like these are criticisms that stem from this idea that well, it's dark, therefore it's badly lit, instead of understanding the differences between bad lighting and purposeful darkness. like the difference between, you know, GoT or something and this is that in The Batman, the shadows aren't just bad lighting, they're used to frame the images, to hide certain elements until those elements need to be seen, and to establish mood and tone as what is essentially a noir movie with horror and and superhero action elements. i appreciate that, and it reminds me of the way Into the Spider-Verse uses the Kingpin's literal body to manipulate the frame and affect the cinematography, in some ways.

Birds of Prey is less heavy on the noir elements but has a lot of really good color grading for setting the mood. like the lighting in the final scenes? it's so moody and effective, and I love a good movie with good color stylization, using purples and blues and reds like yes, please do that, I'm sick of Realistic Lighting™️ (Mad Max: Fury Road also did this really well). it looks fantastic throughout and is just a very well directed action movie imo

birds of prey also has possibly the best fight scene choreography i've ever seen in a modern superhero movie, along with like... tasm2?? which also has some stellar action choreo and really fascinating set pieces and setups (basically everything involving electro was fucking sick) but like, i think BoP surpasses pretty much every live action superhero movie i've ever seen, including my fave live action spidey movies (Spider-Man 2 and TASM and TASM 2, minus the green goblin but including the clock tower) in being not just fast and frenetic and high-impact, but also being clear, concise, easy to follow, and creative. the glitter cannon stuff is so well done and was very fun to watch in the theater. The fight scenes in Birds of Prey are fun, fast, clear, and absolutely fucking brutal.

i feel like i always compare it to Black Panther, which i saw first obvs (though not in theaters), and which is a solid movie that i enjoyed for the most part, and which is indeed probably the best MCU movie in general, but I found the fight scenes in Black Panther to be muddy and somewhat difficult to follow, almost slow, despite being... technically fast? I only bring it up specifically because it was praised as being not just the best MCU film (a low bar) but also in being a Great Movie with Great Fight Scenes but... tbh i wasn't big on the fight scenes in Black Panther... though i do think it's got the best costume, hair and makeup of the entire MCU at the moment, personally. and I haven't seen 2, though I hear it's good, but the costumes also look fantastic in that, and I hope the fight choreo has improved cause those movies would be really stellar with the right action choreo imo.

like I said I just brought it up cause like, when I watched Black Panther after hearing it had these amazing fight scenes, and i finally saw them, i felt kind of... confused? like, damn maybe I just have no taste in fight scenes? i was really underwhelmed by it, like, am I missing something that other people are seeing here?? (but like i said, i enjoyed the movie, and it has great costume design) But then I saw Birds of Prey a little while later and was like, blown away by the choreography and cinematography, so I think it's just a matter of the whole designated action setpiece stuff that's going on in the MCU overall, and the way that Disney/Marvel kind of controls that aspect of their movies. i also watched Black Panther on my laptop though, so I wonder if that affected the viewing... like would Birds of Prey be less impressive on my laptop than it was on the big screen (I mean. yes, but in terms of choreo specifically would it be worse on a smaller screen? i'm inclined to say no??? but i haven't rewatched it on DVD yet... maybe i should)

the recent predator movie, Prey, also had some really good choreo and cinematography imo, though I found it suffered somewhat from the use of CGI instead of practical effects for things like the bear hunting, but, I get it, it's cheaper to use CGI than to build a fucking... animatronic bear XD but aesthetically, I think it was an attractive movie and I liked the design for the Predator in that movie a lot... the skull faceplate and general integration of bones into the design was really cool looking, and the like... juxtaposition of natural colors and warm lighting from fire etc. compared to the neon green of the predator blood and its modern technology and cloaking was so interesting, visually. also a movie with absolutely brutal violence lol

actually when i watched Prey, I watched Predators (with the s) the same day, because I was looking at lists and saw it was well-praised, and in some cases put as #2 only behind the original Predator, but... like... it's no contest. Prey is a better movie. I'm sorry if you cannot suspend your disbelief that a teenage native girl outwitted the predator w/ nothing but her environment and handmade weapons but I think the movie sold that really well and showed that she was learning and adapting the entire time, and showed how close she came to dying not just from the predator but from the bear and other animals as well, numerous times. I think it was as convincing as any other "human beats predator" movie can be. and like the other movies, a lot of the humans trying to fight it did die. like... i don't think adrien brody's character in Predators is any more or less convincing as a character using his wits to beat an adversary that is more physically powerful and more technologically advanced than him.

Prey is a better movie imo

Predators was fine, and you know I love topher grace being a weird little guy, but it's simply not a contest lol. it was effective in making you hate most of the characters though, so it did that well XD except of course the most interesting character died, so, whatever. Predators gave me the vibe of a movie that was like, OKAY WE HAVE THE BUDGET FOR THESE BIG NAME ACTORS, we GOT morpheus from the matrix, we GOT machete himself—but we only got the budget for five minutes of screen time so they are going to die immediately unfortunately XD

i also thought the romance was dumb but what else is new lmao

and prey feels like a movie that's not trying to just be big explosions with a famous guy but like, telling a story with characters that know each other already and telling a story about not just overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles and enemies but also about proving oneself, and being true to oneself, and also about how french people suck

anyway boy this ended up being one long ramble about movies i've seen over the past couple years huh

just musing, thinking,

hey man you know what other movie ruled? pacific rim. that's a movie with character design, mood and setting. hell yeah.

i didn't hate the sequel as much as some people but i did think it was lacking a lot of the mood and character of the first (though the mechs looked nice) and while i found the actual plugsuits better designed i thought the helmets were less visually appealing without actual glass visors, and i think its plot would have been better if instead of icing mako they had instead made the plot about her and her brother's relationship instead of playing him off of some bland white dude (though the obvious bisexuality on display was funny)... having mako be the only person he can drift with would have been way more interesting to me tbh... the stuff with the little girl was solid though. but nothing can live up to that first movie, i mean, how COULD it. it's GDT doing mecha! (they should have named the mech in the first movie something else though yikes)

i kinda wanted to watch the second tom holland spiderman movie but i got like a minute in before it really was driven home that i would need to have seen infinity war and endgame first.. and i havent. ugh. i hate the mcu lol

otp - UHHHH i rlly don't care if I'm honest. Just let Tony and Nat be happy. So... I have read a fair amount of natony as a consequence. But I've read A Lot since I'm. not as much of a shipper in this as i am in other things. I've read mostly Tony-related stuff because. I've watched mostly Tony-related films. I've seen all movies with our Iron Man in them but only like 2 with Steve. so it tracks right? Right. winteriron and frostiron are like massive pairings and I don't exclude them, so I guess either could count by default? Sambucky also has my whole heart <3. But I don't really otp anything in MCU. idk. idk. idk.

favourite canon pairing - we all know GOOP makes anything She plays kind of less palatable :| so not pepperony, though it makes him Very Happy so I'm cool with it. Sambucky ;) I joke i jape. It's probably. uh. I actually just realised I don't know the canon pairings. Steggy? I guess? By default??? Controversial opinion: I liked Steve's ending. They got their dance! Fucking battles with prev. canon from the shows but I. didn't watch them. so it doesn't fuck with what I perceive to be canon (the films I saw. which was like half of them). So it worked.

worst pairing ever - stony #notsorry they barely tolerate each other's existence in the MCU

guilty pleasure pairing - I don't believe in guilty pleasure unless there's a real reason to feel guilt like the person is an evil bastard (I.e. when listening to music made by a murderer, for example) and since these are entirely fictional characters. this does not apply.

a pairing you want to see more - natony because I want more of nat and of tony so. why not natony honestly. also What If gives me Major peggy/natasha vibes so.... you know... Captain Britain my beloved <3 Natalia Romanova my beloved <3 put beloveds together... good shit, good shit.

Bloody Roar concept art

Hi guys, a while back I asked a question about whether there were still any Bloody Roar fans. Now that I’ve logged into my Tumblr again, I’ve seen some ppl chime in to say hello! Thus, to keep this fandom (however small it is lol) active, imma post some cool stuff concerning BR; concept art for the first game. *Note that all this info is from Mitsuakira Tatsuta and Shinsuke Yamakawa’s Twitters with some of my opinions and observations sprinkled in

So, back when the first game was being developed, the character designers had to rack their brains to come up with good zoanthrope designs. Part of the team were Mitsuakira Tatsuta and Shinsuke Yamakawa and they sketched all kinds of beasts at an incredible rate (like, it was a lot). Mr. Tatsuta himself drew about 300 of them and he said there were a bull and kangaroo design he personally liked but those got rejected (we’ll get there).

The image above is an unused koala girl whom he and the other artists found funny and couldn’t stop laughing at how terrible and dumb it looked. Tbh, they were kinda right lol. Given how slow koalas are, the image of a humanoid marsupial with boobs running towards you is fucking hilarious.

Anteater dude. Probably would have played like a mix between Bakuryu and Busuzima. Mr. Yamakawa thought it looked similar to the former. Speaking of which.......

Early design for Bakuryu. Seems like the mole was going to have ears and a tail. Actually, I’ve always wondered why the Bakuryus didn’t have tails when moles irl do have visible ones. Unless there’s a breed of mole that doesn’t, in which case I’m not aware of. The concept of a 2nd Bakuryu was also apparently already thought up at this time (idk if in the form of a clone, brother, student, etc.) even when Mr. Tatsuta wasn’t involved much in the later games so it’s nice to know that Kakeru/Kenji was not merely an afterthought haha.

Here are 2 very early concept art of Alice. In the 1st one, she looks more mature and edgy. The design/aesthetic may have been recycled into Nagi’s in BR4 (especially the tube top). In the 2nd one, she doesn’t have pigtails since her hair is short and instead wears a giant bow to emulate bunny ears. Very shoujo-esque.

This is the rejected bull design Mr. Tatsuta mentioned and next to it an early bat zoanthrope. The artist had already thought up some ideas on how they were going to fit in the game. The bat was of course used as the basis for Jenny’s beast form later on. There is also the bull zoanthrope’s human form. The character would be Native American it looks like. Bull guy here had been shown before in concept art included in the BR1 game.

A black panther woman (literally lol). It looks like she could have been a black character (probably the first and only in the series unless you count Greg). Also, if this character was approved, we’d have gotten even more cats in the roster.

Squirrel girl, elephant man, and goat lady. The first one looks kinda like a monkey girl (which would be super cute), elephant obvs became Ganesha later, and the goat lady looks more like a demon/satyr to me. This would actually be cool and does fit in with the mythos as shown in the games and the “BR: The Fang” manga i.e., fantasy creatures such as mermaids, dragons, and phoenixes.

Kangaroo zoanthrope. Mr. Tatsuta imagined him using the Muay Thai fighting style. Eventually rejected as Roger, another kangaroo fgc, had already appeared in Tekken 1-2 years before.

Something veeeeeryyyy interesting. This is a pretty detailed design for a character that was going to be Alice’s brother. This guy was also included in the concept art feature in the BR1 game but it was not mentioned who he was supposed to be. I actually thought he was a proto-Yugo or something. Well, if he made it this far into the character creation process (past the rough sketches and onto colored concept art), then there must have been a conceptual storyline for him somewhere along the line. Judging from his appearance and fashion sense (heh), he’s definitely related to Alice.

Additionally, the red eyes and rabbit-like face probably means that he too was going to have a rabbit beast form; maybe even a hare. I guess he was scrapped since having 2 bunnies would’ve been redundant. I wonder how Alice’s backstory might’ve been had her brother existed. Would she have been adopted into the Nonomura family? Was there going to be some plot where she would be looking for him, thinking she lost her family? Who knows. One thing I do know however, is that he’d butt heads with Yugo since he wouldn’t be keen on his sister dating a *gasp* predator.

Now, I think it would be awesome if this character is introduced in a potential reboot/new installment! They could say Alice didn’t know he was alive, or that he stayed away to keep her safe, seeing as she was already happy with the Nonomuras and relegated himself to watching over her in the shadows. Seriouslyyyy the potential is enormous and I’m hoping something will be done with scrapped concepts like this. (Plus, this guy reminded me of the genderbend Alice fanart I did so long ago. I guess male Alice wasn’t too far off after all).

And lastly, Alice in her sailor fuku (human and beast form). Mr. Tatsuta said this was how he imagined she looked like in that costume.

That’s all for now! It’s really interesting to see all this concept art and trace back where some designs carried over into later installments of the series. After going through all of them, I yearn even more for another Bloody Roar game! A reboot would be great and some of the rejected designs could be used too. Or continuation with new characters and a bigger roster; that would be even more amazing. Anyway, I thought I should share these sketches by some of the original Raizing/Eighting staff and keep the interest in BR going. We may get something; in regards to Konami trademarking the brand name last year, we just have to wait and see.

Submitted by Anonymous Problem with "Westerners" is that some will include middle Europe to that, so that'll cause another layer of discussion and misunderstandings. Eastern Europe will be an exception to many, unless the people have no idea about the difference between Eastern and Western Europe. I've seen it used plenty to encompass parts of Europe as well, so even that isn't the best option. I wasn't saying that 1st gen, or even 2nd-3rd'etc diaspora aren't (their parents origin land)-American. It was more that someone who's actually literally has no ties to a place, shouldn't claim that they are from that place. If you DO have active parts in your ancestors roots, it's different, because it still is your culture as well. I just think that people who don't even know where a country on a map is, shouldn't claim to be X-American. Like when you see someone claiming to be Scottish-American, but said "Scottishness" was their great-great-great-great-great-grandpa and that their literally only "new" tie to any European heritage, which they just pay lip service to, and that's it. -I've seen/heard about these people coming to these countries, let's continue using Scotland, and trying to act like they're part of the culture and it's theirs, when it's very clear their only interest in the culture has been some weird fantasy version. Running around with fake Scottish accents, wanting a "family tartan" and then thinking Scottish people only run around in kilts eating haggis. So everything being very stereotypical. Versus a family who immigrated to the US, and do in fact keep an active part in their family heritage, but also their countries culture and heritage going actively. I will say though, that part of my belief here comes from, that I believe your skin tone doesn't stop you from being X-anything. You can be a Black-Swede, if you've become part of the lands culture, and you also view yourself as such, obvs more likely to be the case with people who are the result of their family living for a few generations on a country than the aforementioned 1st-generations, 2nd-3rd etc who might still consider themselves as being actively from the country they moved from.

It's actually been my experience that a lot of people only think of US, UK, and Canada when they hear 'The West'. The 'major' European countries (France, Spain, Germany, etc.) and Eastern Europe are typically seen as their own entities in those conversations. Though I can understand where the confusion would surge up for the perspectives of those who lump everything that's technically caucasian as one monolith. Even though that's it's own 'mm, maybe don't do that' can of worms.

Okay, now I get what you were coming across with that point. Yeah, I can agree especially since that's how I felt in regards to people who had spent all their lives going 'lol, Africa's a shithole; I saw it on this totally unbiased documentary' and then suddenly going 'yas, let's celebrate our strong African blood; Mother Africa~' just because they watched Black Panther.

Sharon is not only the villain, she is totally bad, she kills, she manipulates, she has provided weapons to a group of terrorists, she supports human experiments, she wants power.

She managed to manipulate everyone to do what she wants. Even Sam got her pardon, in the post-credit scene she gets pardon from the government, and we see her talking to someone that they now have access to all the government's weapons and secrets and that is to prepare buyers.

She's not even a fun villain. She is another character, there is nothing about Shaon that we saw in the previous films, and it is jus she is like that because she feels betrayed and abandoned.

MCU is coming to destroy the characters. I'm even afraid for Bucky because they made him betray Wakanda to bring Zemo back.

ugh yikes it makes me so sad that they would do this to her character especially bc i really liked her in catws and it’s just been downhill since then

guess that means they’re setting up for future appearances with that, but that CERTAINLY doesn’t sound like it can lead anywhere good, not that i think the mcu can go anywhere good anymore lmao

to be fair, marvel does not have a good track record with villains. i find the majority of them incredibly boring and annoying. the only ones i think that were compelling were hela, killmonger and pierce, which ya know, ragnarok, black panther and catws are the top mcu movies so makes sense (to be clear, people stanning villains.........don’t stan pierce he’s a goddamn nazi, the movie just did a good job making him terrifying, whereas the other two were like somewhat entertaining AND killmonger did have the emotional depth though i did not like him dude murdered his girlfriend)

i get that often villain origin stories are like that but.......i don’t think it fits with what we saw of her previously, i mean i can’t speak with certainty, not watching the show and seeing how it’s executed, but from everything you’ve told me about it, it sounds messy

there’s inconsistencies with how pretty much every significant character in the mcu is written but. the cracks are just getting worse and worse. i haven’t heard as much about them doing sam wrong in this show, except someone mentioned him making a gross comment about bucky’s brainwashing or s/t which sam of all people would NOT do, but anyway i hope at least they did him pretty well in the show in comparison to sharon and bucky? still, it all just makes me sad like, these characters finally get a chance to shine and obvs i see a lot of people giving the show love, but i just don’t know that sam and bucky really got the story they deserved, not that it was really possible at this point in the mcu, but still. it could’ve been done better

okay, let's start with levi (my beloved):

hogwarts house: gryffindor (maybe....?) | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

ugh, the hp sorting house system is way too reductive. he has qualities of gryffindor, slytherin, and hufflepuff - brave, astute, loyal to a fault, etc. so it's a hard choice. but if i really have to choose, i'd go for gryffindor. i know that his Bad Boy facade shouts slytherin, but while he has larger goals (killing all the titans, then saving the world etc.), he's got no actual ambition for himself. hufflepuff would also be a good option.

daemon (from the his dark materials series): (because i've just decided that's just way more accurate than the hp method) some kind of big feline. maybe a panther - a black panther would be the ideal - aloof, predatory, dangerous, fiercely independent.

best quality: besides his obvious strenghts as a leader and warrior, the way he cares for his comrades-in-arms. it's very hard to gain his trust and respect, but once you have it, it's forever. he's pragmatic and ruthless, yes, but he also has a huge capacity for compassion and friendship. not that he would be effusive about his affections, of course.

worst quality: none, he's absolutely perfect ❤ jklsdfhjk jokes aside, he really struggles to open up (a serious understatement), idt he ever talked about his traumatic past with anyone. i mean, maybe he mentioned it to hange and erwin (erwin knew him when he was still an undergound thug, so...), but... he's not great with feelings. despite his apathetic, intimidating mask, he feels and cares deeply, but he has a long history with losing the people he loves, so he tries to not personally care about his squadmates, which can be both a strenght and a weakness. of course, he spectacularly fails at this.

ship them with: well, it's not a secret that i'm a huge rivamika fan, this ship is almost literally consuming my waking thoughts lmao. imo they're perfectly compatible: very similar personalities (stoic, the strongest warriors, absolutely terrifying on the battlefield but with a soft underbelly), very similar pasts/experiences, so many parallels that it's actually ridiculous, etc. i love how they're both each other's equals and likeness (yes, i took it from jane eyre. no, i don't regret anything lmao). a lot of tropes i love, too: Terrible First Impression (the Pride and Prejudice vibes are so strong with these two, you have no idea), Kindred Spirits/Mirror Images, Veteran/Young Prodigy, The Last of Their Kind, even Height Difference lmao. i could write a whole rivamika manifesto, but this is already too long. (maybe for some other time 👀) i would've loved for their dynamic to be more explored in canon but alas, isayama clearly didn't give a shit about the ackerman legacy, he just used it as a plot shortcut to give them conveniently unique powers, since they never really talked about it 🙄 (and before some troll comes into my askbox shouting "you iNcEsT fReAk!!!!1!!", they're only very distantly related. we know shit about the ackermans but we know for sure that they've got at least several generations between them. biologically their shared DNA is 0%, obviously they don't see each other as family, all the eldians have a dead ass common ancestor from 2000 years ago so they're all basically ⁓related anyway. if you really wanna scream about i.ncest, go watch got/dark/the borgias and shut the fuck up please. or alternatively go outside and touch some grass) sorry for the rant, uh. anyway, i can also see levi/erwin. idk if i'd ever care enough to read a fic about them (i'm usually a huge multishipper, but for some weird reason not when it comes to rivamika? same with braime and kastle tbh), but still, i can see it.

brotp them with: hange and erwin, obv. veteran trio >>> ema trio, sorry not sorry (at least h. and e. died before yams had the chance to ruin their character arcs)

needs to stay away from: ...uh, filth, i guess? lmao

misc. thoughts: besides the stupid teenage fangirl crush i have on him, i'm genuinely fascinated by the man himself. he's a huge mess of a contradictions, and yet somehow it works: he's violent and brash and kind of an asshole, but also has a strong moral code and integrity; he's obv very skilled at all the killing/torturing stuff and yet he has a huge respect for life; he's got a potty mouth to say the least, and yet some very aristocratic manners/tastes (the way he sits, his preference for tea and usually refined clothes); he comes from what's supposed to be an illustrous bloodline, he's methodical and very precise, and yet he was born and raised in the underground, he's been used to filth and blood and poverty since he was a child, kenny of all people was his father figure, and probably has known no other life than a perennial survival mode existence. he's "humanity's strongest soldier", but while well-built he's also small, the david to the titans' goliah, and probably not what people would assume a born warrior looks like. he's also one of the few characters who stayed true to himself and his original characterization until the end, bless you smol king ❤

mikasa:

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

this is actually easy: mikasa belongs to hufflepuff and no, i won't take criticism (just joking lol). enough with this "hufflepuffs are fluffy puppies/Cinnamon Rolls <3" thing: mikasa values loyalty and duty more than anything else. she's also hardworking... and fierce, strong, lethal. yes, hufflepuff and lethal are not mutually exclusive concepts.

daemon: (finally the better option) a she-wolf, fiercely protective of her pack.

best quality: loyal, brave, incredibly strong (alongside her more fragile qualities). practical and level-headed on the battlefield, at least when eren is not included in the picture.

worst quality: struggles to let go of the past (understandable, considering her trauma). tunnel-vision when it comes to eren, obv. extreme levels of delusions ("if only i spoke openly about my romantic feelings for him - as if i didn't made them abundantly clear in ⁓6 years - he wouldn't kill 80% of humanity :(((" lmao okay. just. okay), but that's more on the writing. she's sadly more static than any other main character throughtout the whole series.

ship them with: see above :) but recently i've also started to be intrigued by mikasa/annie and mikasa/sasha. also, i'm sympathetic to jeankasa fans, though i don't actually care for the ship.

brotp them with: EMA trio, especially armin+mikasa. their friendship is so beautiful and special. also sasha.

needs to stay away from: ...... eren, at least romantically. again, that's more on the writing than anything else, but e.remika unfortunately encompasses many tropes i loathe with all the strength of my old shriveled heart: childhood friends-to lovers where the (male) childhood friend doesn't acknolewdge/is completely indifferent to the other (female) friend's romantic feelings, she hopelessly pines for him for years without anything more than a cold shoulder... until in the last chapter it's revealed that he loved her all along and doesn't "want other men to have her!!! :((" (then why did you have no reaction whatsoever to jean's years-long crush on her while she was jealous of any vaguely female-shaped human being you were friendly to, including hange? are you that dumb, man?); the female character's development and entire arc 100% revolves around the male protagonist - she has no goals, no dreams of her own except staying with him forever and ever; the romance is based on an idealized childhood dream, therefore reaffirming those childish illusions would make the character regress, not actually grow up (and nope, epilogue!jk doesn’t count; that also lacks build-up - i would’ve said the same about rm as well, so it’s not about shipping, guys, it really isn’t - and mikasa needed an inner change; getting married to another man but still praying to eren’s shrine is not substitute to actual development lol). post-time skip she's never really frustrated/angry with him, they never get a confrontation about him becoming a, y'know, mass-murderer of gigantic (pun intended) proportions; she puts him on a pedestal, and never stops idealizing him/never sees him for what he actually is (the narrative framing him as some kind of tragic martyr/saint eren from paradis with zero agency and basically... no clear motivation for the abovementioned mass murder, and not the actual complex tragic anti-hero/villain motivated by revenge and righteous fury he deserved to be, does not help). it lacks a good or even decent build-up - it's basically all tell and not show. now, if they'd actually been childhood friends to enemies to lovers/mutually co-dependent... it could have been interesting. sadly, it's not my cup of tea. of course this is just my personal preference, no hard feelings to the shippers.

misc. thoughts: enormous potential. she's been my fav female character since s1 - and ah, i miss s1!mikasa, when she had actually other stuff to do besides mothering eren. i love that she's the strongest warrior (second only to levi, obv), that her skills are never called into questions despite her gender, i love how she stands up for herself and the people she loves, that she may seem cold and stoic and yet has a such a huge heart, that she's not perfect but also sometimes awe-inspiring. sadly, she never really gets out of eren's shadow; what she lacks is an arc focused on herself. that's why imo getting deeper into the ackerman lore would've helped (also, you cannot make the main female character and the most popular male character descend from the same Unique Bloodline or whatever, and never really make them acknowledge it out loud; as a writer, you just can't lol). my spite is so strong that i'm currently writing a ridiculously pretentious fic that's 70% development for her character, to give her a voice, and 30% ackerthirsting. (yes, that's the fic i'm always vagueblogging about lmao, rip @ my brain). if any other rivamika fan is interested… mind you, it’s in italian tho, and idt i have the skills to translate into english.

misa:

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

daemon: mmh, maybe some kind of butterfly? beautiful, colorful, and short-lived.

best quality: glorious fashion sense, more inventive and ingenious than fans actually give her credit for.

worst quality: shallow, impulsive, and obv her dependence on/obsession with light (which stems from trauma btw, but still… the very opposite of a relationship between equals).

ship them with: rem, kinda (monster/human ftw!). also weirdly enough mogi, a little bit? she deserves someone who actually respects her… though she’s far from being a perfect angel. she may actually be crazier than light on some aspects. but in this house we stan evil ladies anyway, so i have no problem with that <3

brotp them with: uh, idk, maybe matsuda?

needs to stay away from: obv light. also takada.

misc. thoughts: a tragic victim of sexist writing. she may be… unhinged to say the least, but she didn’t deserve the abuse she got from light (and from the fans). the female characters’ writing in dn is so bad that idk if it’s on purpose, to kinda mirror the reality of women in a patriarchal society (dependent on men, housewives whose life entirely revolves around their husband/boyfriend etc.), or just casual misogyny lol. it’s even more baffling since we don’t know the author’s gender (they may be a man, a woman, nb, anything really). i tend for the latter option tho.

aegon greyjoy (now, i wasn’t expecting him lol):

Mind, it’s not used as a positive thing to describe someone haha. It’s kind of like criticizing someone for not appreciating or understanding the beauty of something

Yakov (CV. Yasumoto Hiroki)

Brief Event Fluff

This event is in their relatively-new “Royal Garden” format. It’s just a revamp of collection events, but it’s cute bc you can take their pets out to war to bring back some extra points every three hours. This is probably the most official “rendition” of the BMP1 character’s “pets”. They’re not like the BMP2 charas (where most everyone has an actual pet) so lol with some of them:

wil’s is a terrifying prince rabbit doll bc… carrots or something. somebody retcon in a bootleg lassie for him please i hate looking at this thing

keith is his dumb lion fursona like kevin’s. it even stands upright and everything

roberto has a legit rabbit, which i think has been his motif for a long time and was then further solidified with the rabbit doll in his time travel bday story.

joshua’s is Kyuu. idr if kyuu made any named appearances in his English content, but kyuu is that same grey cat ↓

(there’s more but u get the message) sieg’s cat is “Kyuu the Third” where Sieg’s cat is related to this Kyuu lol

glenn has a hamster(?). kuon has a squirrel (and i think shion the chipmunk?) so it might be a bootleg mascot of that

ed has a pegasus-type-looking horse. I think Arionne exists only in the non-social continuity, and the one BMP fansite master I look to claims that the horse is named Raphael. idk I never really bothered to play much ed content so hmmm

yakov obv has Daifuku which still cracks me up bc it is among the smallest and least threatening of the animals. charas like ivan and ryuo have wolves and tigers which are still cool but cute but the guy with hunting and shooting as his listed hobbies has a very small owl that doesn’t do anything cool except be a klepto and bother him at work

zain has a panther-like cat, identical to jin. but if I really want to go wehhh zain master race zain had the black cat motif in his avatar items before they even bothered to make jin a major character iirc. the fansite master seems to think it’s supposed to be a call to Suzu (the cat in Zain’s time travel bday route) but hmmm idk

2018 The End! (Or What Happened At The Movies That Year!)

That’s it film folks! With the Oscars we can now officially turn the page on “last year” movies and although, it was neither a bad year nor the most mind-blowing year BUT it was at a year offering an abundance of decent/above=average-to-great films, which, in the end might be a good thing for everybody and explains why the box office exploded!

Great year for average movie but average year for great movie which doesn't equal the same but we take what we can get! Which means nothing too mindblowing to root hard for award season/Oscars, making up for more movie possibly appealing and less dramatic disappointment…

There are great years (2013 anybody) years of extreme highs, bringing abhorrent films and at the same time “the best movies ever” but then not much in between (guess like 2016!)…

Then there’s mostly the “not-good-not-bad” but mostly unmemorable years (ho yeah remember that time movies like SPOTLIGHT won Best Picture - over THE REVENANT!! - okay movie but won;t be remembered in 10 years maybe, well that summed up that year for example ;) )

There are also awful years for specific genres, themes, some people, but let’s not start digging into that!

But this year - a bit like last year - is what we can call a very good years for films, and although not all the best films are being recognized for major awards (like last year overlooked THE RIDER or 120 BPM and quite a few this year but above else the omission of ONE CUT OF THE DEAD from the conversation is the most painful for the lucky few who got lucky enough to see it whenever it screened somewhere … Seriously someone need to fix the distribution system to make it more “friendly” for cinephile!) we can say overall there are no award-buzzy films that DO NOT deserve some kind of love ...Expect GREEN BOOK and BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY for obvs reason….BUT hey we have to thank the film gods that at least we got 2 incredible performances by Mahershala Ali and Rami Malek (and even thought this have nothing to do with that or take anything away from their one-of-a-kind talent but their wins everywhere helps diversified usually very white list of winners…)

ROMA is loveeeeeddd by many and many of us truly believe it is a great great film but at this point possible over-the-top, but we cannot complaint because there is nothing like this out there (and if it wasn't for ROMA we would have to deal with COLD WAR people !! No offense indeed this one is a great one but defo over-hyped! If only more peeps got behind the power of CAPERNAUM and its breathtaking lead Zain…) and seems to be the film of the year but let’s not forget about THE FAVOURITE or EIGHTH GRADE or SORRY TO BOTHER YOU which might have lost much attention but still were highlight not only of the year but of Cinema in its entirety. Also BLACK PANTHER might have “infuriated” a few but there is no doubt that this is the superhero movie that deserved the recognition it got! (well LOGAN might have been more of a Spirit Awards type if well… Its budget was independent! lol )

Now, before we dig into typical categories that get rightfully acknowledge, let’s talk about what happened in Cinema last year and more “unconventional” stuff

Trends or Notable Occurrence

2018 a good year for heist movie: Among other AMERICAN ANIMAL, MUSEO, OCEAN 8, EL ANGEL, WIDOWS, DEN OF THIEVES, KING OF THIEVES, ROBIN HOOD (well had to put it in there!) and of course HURRICANE HEIST and its bonkers skull-clouds!

Movie offering strangely very peculiar similarity: VOX LUX and A STAR IS BORN pop star in the making, poignant films about the fucked-up idea that is conversion therapy MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST and BOY ERASED, DEATH WISH and PEPPERMINT (aka white woman death wish) and EQUALIZER take on addiction and young upper-middle/middle-class white boy in BEAUTIFUL BOY & BEN IS BACK and last but not least, people having to shut the F up in order to not die in A QUIET PLACE and BIRD BOX ;)

“Western revival” keeps on delivering, starting with one of the most sadly overlooked movie of the year - and that, believe it or not, is coming from someone who usually not quick to praise the Cohen brothers! - THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SGRUGGS (in an alternative world it would have won Best Picture hands downs!) WOMAN WALKS AHEAD, DAMSEL, THE SISTERS BROTHERS

Black and white is still a thing for the right or wrong reason (Not to make the “purist” screams...but why tho?!) ROMA, COLD WAR, LETO,

A trend we would prefer not to be one but it speak tons about the reality of our life, domestic terrorism/mass shooting/extremism in VOX LUX, AND THEN I GO, AMANDA, 22 JULY, HOTEL MUMBAI (out in 2019 really but we all know why it took so ong for this one to get out…), THE FIRST PURGE, ASSASSINATION NATION, SOLDADO, THE 15:17 TO PARIS (remember this other Eastwood movie that came out last year!) and - sorry in advance but this is true! - AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR...

Not so much a trend but a fact; horror movie solidifies its status as “not niche” anymore especially after GET OUT success last year. This year HEREDITARY and A QUIET PLACE took leads alongs with SUSPIRIA, HALLOWEEN, ANNIHILATION, MANDY, UNSANE or even BIRDBOX and APOSTLE (these 2 probs have more of a 90s horror scifi drama but still messed-up!)

D.I.V.E.R.S.I.T.Y. at the movies: that long overdue time for the industry to “jump on that bandwagon” or die trying and go broke! Because the reality is that, people were tired of the same old stories and yearning to see themselves and others portrayed on screen and so Box office got smashed and also...Wakanda forever!

Woke Cinema. In a way going hand in hand with the previous, this year we saw the renaissance or a boom in social, engaged, meaningful films but also a fresh and timely genre that we like to call “woke movies”! They differ from the previous social-realism current in the sense that they address very very contemporary issues. Of course SORRY TO BOTHER YOU illustrate this better than most but this trend affected film of all genre and style from BLINDSPOTTING to THE HATE YOU GIVE to SPIDERVERSE but also extend in a way to foreign film such as TIMESHARE, EL CONCURSANTE, WOMAN AT WAR, ANGEL WEAR WHITE…

The year was under the fantastic spell of documentaries with the likes of RBG, WONT YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR, 3 IDENTICAL STRANGERS, MIA/MAYA/MATANGI, FREE SOLO, HALE COUNTY, MINDING THE GAP, FAHRENHEIT 11/9, SEING ALLRED, ON HER SHOULDER, THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD also going hand in hand with the rise “woke Cinema” after a great summer getting schooled at the movies about the reality of living life while black or minority or a woman or suffering from recent social changes or a combo of all of the above! We also got a fair amount of great art doc from THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING or BOOM FOR REAL, KUSAMA INFINITY, to fashion docs MCQUEEN, YELLOW IS A FORBIDDEN COLOR and WESTWOOD or film-related THEY’LL LOVE ME WHEN I’M DEAD or NOTHING LIKE A DAME. What a year and a great way to learn new things!

In a year where an Eastwood movie is becoming the "exotic flavor of the month" we had a few “white men swan song” with inexcusably overlooked performances by Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds in OLD MAN AND THE GUN and LAST MOVIE STAR respectively.

In a relatively shitty year for the planet when one thing happened after another of course we got a boatload of desperate time/apocalyptic movies! Most of them strangely courtesy of Netflix! I THINK WE’RE ALONE NOW, A QUIET PLACE, BIRDBOX, MUTE, EXTINCTION, HOW IT ENDS and...FUTURE WORLD!

Minor but welcomed trends seen on screen included also skate movie/doc (UNITED SKATE, MINDING THE GAP, SKATE KITCHEN, MID 90’S)

Things we forgot are still a thing: MAMA MIA, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, BUMBLEBEE, 50 SHADES, PACIFIC RIM, JURRASSIC WORLD, MAZE RUNNER, MILLENIUM

Potentially great things that turned wasteful to some extend; among other SOLDADO, SOLO, THE NUTCRAKER AND THE 4TH REALMS, WRINKLE IN TIME, ON THE BASIS OF SEXES, FRONTRUNNER, LIFE ITSELF, GOTTI and also that Jlaw movie...

Also since we are already in 2019, a trend that seems surfing a wave quite hard is “music movie”! This year was all about A STAR IS BORN and BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY but lest we forget other films helped such as SPIDERVERSE, MARY POPPINS or BEEN SO LONG and yep we also had a MAMAMIA 2… Oh and BAD TIME AT EL ROYAL was kinda musical! ) and of course there were the like of VOX LUX which probably announce and reflects what audiences at large will get to witness in 2019 (*we say that because the followings were screened at fest last year … #distributionnonsense letting cinephile down as usual! No wonder Netflix could get away with murder and we’ll still pay for it cuz at least they don’t make people wait FOREVER to see stuff - .even if sadly not in theaters! -It was said before but let’s say it again: many are ready to pay way way way above average prices to see movie at the same time they hit festival even as a one time only event (think of it as if Cannes or TIFF decided to have film that premiered there in cinemas in major film-market all over the world! So we will all (living in those market) get a chance to see each films in competition without being ruined by the buzz… That will certainly not deter people to still want to go there for the vibes, red carpet, celebs, lining in lines rain or shine and such… Anyway #foodforthought!) We will soon have Elle Fanning “idoling the s&*# out” of TEEN SPIRIT, Elisabeth Moss in HER SMELL, an Elton John biopic and something that could be an excellent massive hit or a sadly failed epic story the new Danny Boyle/The Beatles movie YESTERDAY (let’s hope this one is one for the book!)

what is your opinion on race-bending characters?

… this is gonna be something I’ll regret replying to but okay X°D anyway, this has an answer on multiple levels

if the character’s ethnicity has no relevance to the plot or we’re talking about 99% of theater stuff, who gives a fuck. I mean, unless you have stuff like othello (where you’d need a black lead) or exceptions like that theater auditions are usually blinded so whoever gets cast idc as long as they’re good. likewise, if character X’s ethnicity has no relevance on the plot (ie: nick fury in the mcu), racebend whatever the hell you like. more good rep is always good, if you do it well. I mean, I was down with racebent shatterstar, I was LESS down with how they treated the character in the five minutes he was in DP2 but like ‘star’s ethnicity has no bearing on the plot, so who cares.

if the character’s ethnicity has relevance to the plot and it’s important that they’re THAT ethnicity, don’t. I’m talking about stuff like the dark tower movie (where they had black roland just so they could cut the ACTUAL BLACK CHARACTER and make everyone conveniently forget and where they didn’t even bother to keep the eyes and guess what the fact that she was black and roland white was one of the main plot points of book two and it wouldn’t have worked in any other way) ofc, but I mean, if you racebend luke c/age to chinese it’d make zero sense because luke works if he’s black, and you can’t racebend black panther to south american it makes no sense either. obviously if you’re adapting material where a character is stereotypically portrayed you can change that for the better.

if the ethnicity doesn’t technically have relevance but racebending would make the entire thing more racist or look like you’re doing it for token rep… don’t. what I mean is OBV the danny rand drama - guys ppl are bitching that he should have been asian but if he had the entire thing would have looked kinda offensive in a lot of places and people would have lost their shit at luke calling him out on his *privilege* like guys let’s be real asian danny rand would have looked…. pretty bad also because anyway when the accident happens he’s ten and still american so he’d be an asian-american ending up in k’un lun and it’s the exact same thing culturally so *shrug* I mean if they dealt with it well it’d have been cool but it’d have been potentially not really great so it wasn’t necessary at all regardless of what people think. or, the black johnny storm thing where they only racebent him and not susan - why? like, why the hell if they’re brothers you can’t racebend both? and mind that MBJ looked like the only good thing about the F4 reboot (which i’m not going to watch I mean it looks terrible) but like…. do it all or don’t? i’d have been down with both black storms but come on XD

I mean I’m cool with it if it doesn’t fuck with the plot/if the character wasn’t meant to be THAT CERTAIN ETHNICITY/if it’s not done for woke points and the rest sucks. tho that said I was kinda meh that for elektra in the mcu they didn’t pick a greek person since greeks never get rep, and don’t get me started on that disaster of the bbc ilyad show where they could have casted mediterranean actors but NAAAAH LET’S DO BRITISH PEOPLE EITHER BLACK OR WHITE BUT NEVER MEDITERRANEAN like why no turkish actors for the trojans? WHY? XD like idk I’m down with it but if it makes sense even better.

ETA: that said, you can’t crucify people for not doing it. I mean, if character X is white and they cast a white person playing them... IT’S OKAY. and tbqh I wish people would call for more original diverse characters then for racebending anyone because that’s kinda lazy imo but NEVER MIND THAT

Captain America #1 by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Leinil Francis Yu, Gerry Alanguilan, and Sunny Gho

Acclaimed author, Fantom friend, Baltimore native, Howard (dropout) alum, The Atlantic reporter, Black Panther writer Ta-Nehisi Coates! He’s writing Cap! Steve Rogers and T’Challa have always had an interconnected history. And Coates is adamant that for black writers to truly have an influence in comics, they need to have the opportunity to write ALL the comics, not just the “black” ones. If you haven’t read it, you owe it to yourself to read Coates’ piece for The Atlantic on why he decided to write Captain America.

Plus it’s July 4th! Steve Rogers’ birthday! We’ll have cake!

Batman #50 by Tom King, Mikel Janín, and June Chung

Local DC-based writer and Fantom friend Tom King with maybe the most hype single issue so far of his beloved Batman run! The wedding of Batman and Catwoman? Or is it Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle? Or is it both? HMMMM? Even if you haven’t been keeping up with the series, this issue is worth checking out. We’ll have wedding cake!

One of our absolute favorite cartoonists, Lady Killer and occasional Batman artist Joëlle Jones is finally getting her own Catwoman solo series where she’s writing and drawing the whole thing, with colors by industry legend Laura Allred! Obv as the cover tells us, this spins out of the events of Batman #50.

Marvel Rising: Squirrel Girl & Ms. Marvel one-shot by Ryan North, G. Willow Wilson, Devin Grayson, Irene Strychalski, and Ramon Bachs

The badass Marvel lady content we’re looking for! WIG REVIEW: AVENGERS - INFINITY WAR

OH GURL, I finally saw Infinity War! Yes, I’m a full week late to this party but y’all know I had to wait that long to see this with MoviePass. Was it worth the wait? Decidedly: no. I mean, it’s the Marvel Universe and and the wigs are always terrible! But the twist here is: SO WAS THE ENTIRE MOVIE. LET’S DISCUSS.

SO MANY SPOILERS AHEAD.

Straight up: this movie is about jewelry. The only other movie I have wasted so much time at that devoted so much time to jewelry was Titanic and it’s hard to say which movie I hated more? I guess still Titanic but I honestly don’t know. They are both really long, cost way too much money, and involved deaths that didn’t need to happen. So that’s the whole thing with Infinity War, right? We were promised that beloved (?) characters would die and they do but also NOT REALLY. BUCKLE UP FOR THE MOST EXHAUSTING RECAP OF NONSENSE EVER.

So blah blah blah Thanos is this intergalactic psychopath “played by” Josh Brolin but mainly played by a computer, as with most characters in the Marvel Universe. Anyway, he needs to get all 6 infinity stones to complete his blinged out Dr Claw from Inspector Gadget hand.

That is basically the entire plot of the movie. Thanos is basically Liberace but slightly less gay and with no apparent piano playing abilities who I guess hates overpopulation and is a complete psychopath? You do the math on this one.

The movie starts exactly where my beloved Thor: Wignarock left off with Loki’s increasingly terrible Disaster Artist locks billowing in the space wind as Thanos demands some effing bling. Tessa Thompson is somehow not there because she has much more important things to do. Loki delivers some infinity stone he just had laying around someplace because sure and promptly dies (?) All deaths in this movie are highly questionable but this one seems possibly legit and I’m fine with it because this wig is terrible and Tom Hiddleston can do better. Same goes for Idris Elba who also dies (?). I’m very happy that these two handsome men have been freed from the shackles of the Marvel Universe and the bad wigs that go with them. Thor and The Hulk are also there but are somehow spared by Thanos because his deal seems to be only killing HALF the good guys but only sometimes and don’t ask why because you certainly will get no answers.

Moving on, the Hulk crashlands into Dr. Strange’s olde curiousity shoppe and gurl I can’t even with this lewk. I’m all for capes ALWAYS but this HAIR. There are many jokes about Dr. Strange being a wizard and he does look like a very bad magician always. Anyway he gets the 411 on this bling situation from the Hulk which is troubling since possesses some of that bling. It should be noted that the bling he possesses can alter time and space so you’d think the bling could just protect itself and everyone around it but I guess that is too logical for this movie? So instead he decides to go ask another mad genius with a goatee for help!

OMG GOOP IS BACK. HAHHAHAHAHHA. LOOK AT THIS EFFING WIG.

YOU CAN SEE THE LINE OF THE WIG WITH HER REAL HAIR UNDERNEATH. Ok, I understand that building entire characters and planets out of computers is $$$ but for the characters that are played by people, could we maybe get a wig assist? MARVEL UNIVERSE FOR SHAME.

But this wig is not long for this Marvel Universe since Iron Man decides to form a goatee alliance with Dr. Strange because of course. Look at these weirdos! Side note: these are absolutely the kind of dudes who always go to see movies at Film Forum. Anyway, Robert Downey, Jr’s dye job alone is very upsetting but THOSE GLASSES. NO.

Anyway, the goatee alliance proves terrible at protecting NYC streets despite the fact that DR STRANGE’S NECKLACE CAN CHANGE TIME OMG JUST USE THE NECKLACE. Instead, Dr. Strange is beamed aboard a spaceship where he is given the worst acupuncture treatment this side of Hellraiser.

Iron Man and Spider-Man somehow save the day by literally stealing a plotpoint from Aliens and then all three make a lot more stupid movie references while also completely failing at doing anything productive involving highly important timeshifting bling.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Scotland, a Transilvanian Witch and a robot twice her age with a flashlight in his forehead have found love outside a kebab shop.

BUT NOT FOR LONG because WWII wet rag Chris Evans who inexplicably has given himself a butch makeover and ScarJo in the best hair she’s ever had in the Marvel Universe show up to tell them that they need to destroy said forehead flashlight because it’s one of the bling Thanos needs for his bling claw. This is where all logic really goes out the window. The Avengers refuse to sacrifice the “life” of Robot Paul Bettany for the good of, well, THE UNIVERSE so instead to go find help in extracting the bling AND saving a robot’s life in Wakanda because apparently the only capable person in this entire movie is our gurl Shuri.

Anyway, back in space, The Guardians of the Galaxy save Thor who has just been floating around half dead since Thanos left. This means that Chris Pratt and Chris Hemsworth meet face to face and they’re definitely the best looking and funniest in the Marvel Universe so fine. Still, Gamora’s upsetting Halloween Adventure wig continues to exist. Look at these guys looking at it. NO. Anyway, the Chris party is shortlived as Thor needs to go get a new hammer.

But who could make a new hammer? PETER DINKLAGE OF COURSE. The episodic nature of this movie already feels like a sci-fi version of Game of Thrones so why not? He’s the best part of that show and this movie, obvs. He plays a giant dwarf (?) created through highly questionable photoshop not unlike my #2 favorite character in Thor: Wignarock - that GIANT EFFING WOLF. Anyway, this is the best picture I can find of his insane mountain man wig which is very awful. Regardless, he makes Thor an axe with an assist from Groot and also an assist from Thor getting a really terrible sunburn to make it all happen. Whatever? OH: also that raccoon gives Thor a new eye which somehow matches his other eye. Bye, eyepatch!

Anyway, The Guardians go to see Benicio del Toro in his batshit crazy space wig which is so terrible as to maybe be amazing. He definitely has given Thanos some bling that alters reality and they fight and blah blah, Thanos ends up stealing away Gamora, aka his adoptive daughter but not before she tells Chris Pratt she loves him! Yay?

Oh but then in order to get the soul bling (which is not what I imagined), he DEFINITELY throws her off a cliff. But is she dead? DEATH IS NEVER CERTAIN ANYMORE BECAUSE OF THAT REALITY BLING SO EVERYTHING CAN BE CHANGED AND WHY ARE WE EVEN STILL WATCHING THIS NOW SINCE THERE ARE NO ACTUAL STAKES.

Anyway, Chris Pratt and co meet up with the goatee/Spider-Man party and everything devolves into “witty” repartee and terrible decision-making. Thanos shows up and that insect chick puts a spell on him but for some reason they don’t use this magic slumber to kill him, just to try to get his bling claw off and they fail because Chris Pratt can’t control his DAMN TEMPER BECAUSE GAMORA IS MAYBE DEAD BUT PROBABLY NOT SO JUST EFFING CHILL DUDE. Anyway, to save Iron Man, Dr. Strange ends up giving up his bling so Thanos only has one bling left to get...dun dun dun.

Back in Wakanda, Paul Bettany’s bling is being extracted by Shuri but meanwhile, they are totally under attack by some horrible space dogs because obvs. Fighting alongside Wakanda’s already awesome fighters are Chris Evans, ScarJo and the Winter Soldier hisself. GODDAMN THAT IS A TERRIBLE WIG. I mean, truly truly truly outrageously bad.

Also outrageously bad? The fact that all of Wakanda is under attack JUST TO SAVE ROBOT PAUL BETTANY. SO MANY INNOCENT WAKANDANS HAVE TO FIGHT AND ARE KILLED BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT TO KILL A ROBOT AND WHY DID ANYONE IN WAKANDA AGREE TO THIS INSANE PLAN EVEN MICHONNE FROM THE WALKING DEAD. WHAT IN THE VERY HELL. It should also be noted that Black Panther is the only movie in the Marvel Universe that wurqs wig-wise so truly, this is all really plummeting their stock.

So Thor shows up and almost saves the day but then Thanos shows up and then everyone realizes that they have to just destroy this robot anyway to destroy the bling and this was all a huge and terrible waste of time because OBVIOUSLY.

This makes that Transilvanian witch in a horrible horrible horrible red wig that Robot Paul Bettany loves very very sad because somehow a witch is the only person who can destroy bling in this movie which is a plotpoint I appreciate but then she has to also destroy her robot lover but like: IT’S THE ONLY WAY WHY DIDN’T YOU JUST DO THAT BACK AT THE KEBAB SHOP. WHAT IN THE VERY HELL, AVENGERS?!

So then everyone just keeps fighting Thanos even though he is completely unstoppable but like...maybe just fighting him hand to hand will work? (It doesn’t work). Nothing works! Nothing wurqs! The Avengers are completely useless and Thanos just peaces out and then things get completely mindbogglingly stupid:

HALF THE POPULATION OF THE WORLD INCLUDING HALF OF THE AVENGERS JUST DISAPPEARS INTO SMOKE LIKE AN OFFBRAND EPISODE OF THE LEFTOVERS WHICH I’VE NEVER SEEN AND DEFINITELY WON’T NOW.

Huh? Yes, this was Thanos’s plan all along! But obviously, these deaths are not real! I can’t even tell you who got whisked away and who didn’t because one of the people blown away was Black Panther and THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THEY ARE ACTUALLY KILLING OFF BLACK PANTHER. Also before he’s blown away, Dr. Strange says something about how this was the only way (after earlier doing like 14 million calculations) so clearly: they win in the end.

But not the end of THIS movie. No! No! The Marvel Universe refuses to be self contained to one movie. So the whole thing just...ends! For now! Like one big hanging chad of death until the next Avengers movie (A YEAR AWAY) when definitely everyone will live again. THE MARVEL UNIVERSE JUST MADE DEATH NOT A REALITY AND WASTED ALL OUR TIME IN THE PROCESS. There has not been a more ridiculous cliffhanger ending to a movie since The Empire Strikes Back and absolutely both endings are true garbage filmmaking THERE I SAID IT.

At this point, I ask myself: HOW MANY DAYS HAVE I LOST TO THE MARVEL UNIVERSE? How many overlong movies have I watched to prepare for other overlong movies THAT DON’T HAVE AN ENDING? HOW DOES THIS CYCLE CONTINUE? WHEN WILL WE BE DONE? NEVER! BECAUSE WE’LL KEEP SEEING THEM BECAUSE WE DON’T VALUE OUR TIME AND BECAUSE WE’RE GARBAGE PEOPLE. THE END.

VERDICT: DOESN’T WURQ
