The first (hopefully) annual Sailor Moon Villains Week will take place the week of October 1-7, 2023 (the first week of October) !

You may post your works on Tumblr, AO3, Deviantart, or anywhere you choose so as long as you link them in your Tumblr posts if they are off-site. All ratings are allowed, so long as NSFW work is properly tagged and follows the rules of the platform it’s posted on. Be sure to use the "read more" option if necessary (if you post a full fanfiction on Tumblr, to hide NSFW content, or potentially triggering content).

You can add your AO3 works to our designated collection for the event smvillainsweek2023, or our DA gallery for artwork here. Feel free to also use the hashtag #smvillainsweek23 on Twitter or Instagram too.

Submissions should focus on at least one villain from any Sailor Moon media (manga, 90s anime, musicals, live actions, Crystal) at their core along with the daily theme. Ships are allowed as long as they contained at least one villain within the pairing. It doesn't have to focus on or even include a ship, given this week celebrates the Sailor Moon villains. Basically, as long as you're writing/ drawing/creating something featuring a Sailor Moon villain, it's all good.

Omfg HAHAHAHA

Matpat equated "power" too closely with "thickness" or muscle. Powerful feminine form doesn't rely on that. Powerful feminine form can be elegant and slender and soft and voluptuous. Feminine power doesn't rely on traditional ideals of "strength". The first design is very cool and cute...but he was definitely way closer with the second design. lol

But I want to take this opportunity to talk about good “feminine power” portrayals, for a moment. Particularly in Sailor Moon. Because Sailor Moon is one of my biggest hyperfixations and I want to talk about it so, warning..Long post.

Sailor Moon has some of the best powerful female character designs ever imo. So here’s some of my favorite “feminine power” portrayals in Sailor Moon, specifically focusing on the villains:

Queen Beryl.

The OG. The first female villain in the show. Her stature is tall and elegant. Her colors are bold. She’s beautiful yet threatening. She has little screen time compared to the other characters but her presence in those scenes feels formidable. THEN in the final battle with Sailor Moon, she turns into this:

Just this absolute TITAN of a woman, towering over Sailor Moon. She’s terrifying and majestic. I just love this design so much. I also love the Xenian Flower design from the Sailor Moon R movie bc it resembles Beryl’s final design so much. <3

I do appreciate her manga story in which she becomes jealous of the Prince and Princess’ love and becomes possessed by the evil entity Queen Metalia, however. I just love her 90s anime design.

Wicked Lady/Black Lady

The physical manifestation of the desecration of innocence. I could go on and on about how much I love Wicked lady.. She really solidifies the importance of Chbiusa’s character and makes you sympathize with her a lot more. Her existence also solidifies Wiseman, the one who changed Chibiusa into Wicked Lady, as an incredibly evil character. She is powerful and beautiful but incredibly heartbreaking to watch. Wicked Lady (albeit in differing ways from the 90s anime to the manga and Crystal) leads to Chibiusa discovering her TRUE power as her normal, young self. She shows that you don’t have to be cruel and make yourself into something you’re not to be powerful.

Small Lady/Chibiusa/Sailor Chibi Moon was the TRUE powerful female character all along. :)

Mistress 9

I prefer the 90s anime version of her story but it’s all a very similar story to Wicked Lady in that an innocent young girl with innate power, Hotaru Tomoe, is used by the entity Pharaoh 90 for it’s evil purposes. However, until Hotaru is transformed into Mistress 9, the heroes were under the assumption that Hotaru’s true form Sailor Saturn was the true villain and were surprised by her appearance instead.

Mistress 9 is tall, busty, and beautiful. She is manipulative and has EXTREMELY long hair which she is able to control and uses it to restrain Sailor Uranus and Neptune.

Again, just like with Chibi Moon, it is revealed that Hotaru’s true form, Sailor Saturn was the REAL female power character all along.

Queen Nehelenia

A representation of vanity, vengeance, and desperate loneliness. She is beautiful and terrible and heartbreaking. I just love how Sailor Moon frequently depicts its villains as tragic. Her desperation makes her a fearsome and ruthless foe. I love that the 90s anime gave her a redemption arc. I love her character so much.

and last but not least..

Sailor Galaxia and Chaos

I’m just going to partially quote a wiki here bc I would not be able to do her justice:

The Legendary strongest Sailor Senshi, Sailor Galaxia, fought in the Sailor Wars against the source of all malice, Chaos. To finally put an end to the bloody conflict that had been spanning for centuries, she sealed Chaos inside herself.

However, Chaos began tearing at her soul and as she was succumbing to the evil entity. Instead of releasing Chaos, she released her soul, her star seed, into space where it would be untainted by Chaos. (in hopes it would find hope, and it did..in Eternal Sailor Moon)

Sailor Galaxia is a literal soulless, terrifyingly powerful enemy. She is able to kill other sailor senshi easily, often in a single blow. She has destroyed countless planets and enslaved several senshi to do her bidding.

But under her brutal character lies the theme of selfless sacrifice and hope. I love that.

Sailor Moon is eventually able to reach within Sailor Galaxia, to her true self, and rid her of Chaos..dispersing it back into the universe.

Chaos will remain a threat, but the light of hope is revived.

The sheer power and beauty of Sailor Galaxia is just...*chefs kiss*
