Gerhard Richter BIRKENAU opened last month in the Polish village of Oświęcim. The permanent exhibition pavilion includes full-scale facsimile editions of Richter's 2014 Birkenau series of abstract paintings; reproductions of the photos of the Birkenau extermination camp taken by Jewish Sonderkommandos in 1944, which served as Richter's basis for his paintings; and facsimile editions of a 1991 series of Grey Mirror paintings. Which in press coverage so far just get dismissed as grey mirrors, though they are actually photo reproductions of glass mirror paintings, in face-mounted acrylic on aluminum.
By compelling visitors to see themselves in a mirror while surrounded by evidence and repetitions of a genocide, I think these are the most significant works in this show.

The day it is done and the twilight is nigh The sun is replaced with a watchtower eye And the clouds have been stained with an ominous dye Like the butcher has wiped off his knife on the sky The cold iron letters read “Arbeit macht frei” And it may seem a lie but it’s hard to deny If your work is to try to forget how to cry And your freiheit is found in a pit full of lye

Just finished editing the photographs from my second visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau last month, got to say I'm pretty proud of these two. The low light we got in Auschwitz-1 made shooting tricky but so atmospheric ally effective, while seeing Birkenau at night was a very different experience from my first visit last year

All of my photographic art of Auschwitz-Birkenau, as with all of my artistic interpretations of dark tourism sites, was done with the utmost respect and for posterity.

Lest we forget to value our lives.
The things that had happened to these people in Auschwitz and Birkenau were just unfathomable. When you walk inside the rooms, into their execution areas, and into the gas chamber, it was eerie and cold and it has that power to empty your soul and just leave your mind blank. Tears just rolled unto my face as I saw the remnants and the faces of some. 💔

I’ll never forget to atone and also never forget to mourn. This is where our Angst is coming from. It comes from the knowledge that people, when they have too much power, will behave like the most utter scum towards their friends, family, colleagues, partners and fellow citizens just because some idiot thought it was a great idea.
(I know that this is not popular reblog material for all you “happy-go-lucky” type of people but I need to see the darkness to be able to appreciate the lightness that still exists in our world today and also to help me stay vigilent amidst all the wolves out there, yes I know they are there, cause they’ve all been following me like mad)

Se revelará el testimonio inédito del “gemelo de Mengele” sobre las atrocidades de Birkenau
