Bisexual erasure. “When bisexuality is ignored, discriminated against, demonized, or rendered invisible by both the heterosexual world and the lesbian and gay communities. Often, the entire sexual orientation is branded as invalid, immoral, or irrelevant.”
what does it Look like?
- Assuming that two women together are lesbians, two men together are gay, or a man and a woman together are straight
- In most scientific studies, bisexuality is lumped in under “gay” or “lesbian” identities
- Many LGBTQ+ organizations don’t offer programming for bisexuals
- Questioning someone’s bisexuality if they haven’t had sex with both men and women.
what does it sound like?
- “I’m not interested in dating you because you’ve only dated men.” (Implying that I’m actually straight)
- “Bi women are more likely to leave you for a straight relationship.”
- “He’s only ever dated men, so he’s obviously gay.”
- “There’s no point in coming out as Bi if you never plan to leave your current relationship. You just want attention.”
what are the consequences?
- Bi erasure leads to bi phobia (discrimination, anger, blame, and hypersexualization).
- Bi people have *significantly* higher health risks than any other sexual identity group, including alarmingly high rates of depression and suicide.
- Bi women experience much higher rates of domestic violence.
- In the ‘80s and ‘90s bi people were blamed for spreading HIV. and we are still blamed for the spread of other STI’s.
what can I do?
- If you want to help, here’s what you can do:
- Check your own biases When someone says something shitty about bisexuality, correct them—even if a bisexual person isn’t present
- Ask your local LGBTQ+ orgs to offer bi/Pan programs
- Donate time or money to bi-specific organizations.
- Resources: Bisexual Resource Center (BiResource.org) Bi Plus Organizing US (@BiPlusOrgUS) Bi Pride UK (BiPrideUK.org) BiPhoria! (biphoria.org.uk) American Institute of Bisexuality (bisexuality.org) “Greedy: Notes from a Bisexual Who Wants Too Much” by Jen Winston “Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics” by Jennifer Baumgardner “Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body” by Roxane Gay

“What do you mean there’s still so much biphobia in fan spaces? Bisexuals are like some of the most popular characters!”
Yeah, and they either get treated like this:

Or like this:

“Biphobia isn’t real” neither are your braincells

Another thing i’ve noticed is that whenever a character is bisexual (specifically multimedia characters) people are always like “they’re only bisexual in this (insert media here)! In this other media we can call them whatever we want!”
Meanwhile when it comes to gay/lesbian characters it’s always “they’re gay/lesbian in ALL media!”
Bisexual characters never get the same treatment because they’re bisexual and people hate that about them. Yet we’re not supposed to get mad at the constant double standards and blatant biphobia? It’s bullshit.

Ah yes, because 'women are not bisexual unless they are dating women' like babes you are thinking of lesbian.
Same story biphobic straights don't like that bisexuals will be in non m/f pairings and biphobic queers don't like that bisexuals will be in m/f pairings.
ITS BOTH THATS THE DEFINITION ITS M/F PAIRING *AND* NON M/F PAIRING BISEXUALS ARE INTO BOTH!!!!!
Curious what they think about bi men or bi anything else. Why just bi women?? Don't even want to ask what they think about being pan.
It's the lgt to them I guess, if they even include the t.

REAL LIFE HUMAN BEINGS CAN’T QUEERBAIT. NO ONE OWES THE PUBLIC AN EXPLANATION ABOUT THEIR SEXUALITY.
And most of the time these comments completely erase bisexual/pansexuality from the narrative. What we’re not queer if we’re not in a same sex relationship?!?!
STRAIGHT IS NOT THE DEFAULT. YOU ARE NOT STRAIGHT UNTIL PROVEN QUEER.
Kindly fuck right off.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

I personally have not talked about how I ended up in a wheelchair. I was hit by a mini van That was speeding 80 miles per hour. I was pronounced dead so I don't take shit like this lately. Death threats Are not Ever a proper response and anyway Especially Stupid internet Discord I have read all of the Contacts to the post. And I still think it's stupid and biphobic For so many different reasons. One, the lesbian and bisexual community have Stan Together for years. It's basic queer history. I get being frustrated, but you're 21. You should know better than to post death threats Especially Because it's still up right now. What's wrong with you? What kind of adult does that you're supposed to be A rolemode for young queer people. Instead your pushing biphobic bullcrap.

oh litle baba i'm so sorry these people have convinced you youre a boy. you shouldn't feel ashamed of being a masc dyke. please don't cut off your breasts or take mutating chemicals, you dont have to pretend to be a boy to like girls or be masc. you would probably feel better if you got a chance to have s*x with another lesbian. wouldn't you like to have a fem girl touching you, and touching your breasts and loving you like a woman. i would love you and pet you and not incoruge you to be something your not
please dont mutalite yourself. there's are girls out there who will love you as a girl
Ah yes, the queer feminist tradition of (checks notes) corrective rape.
Outside of the genders this sounds no different to what a bigoted cishet man would say after a queer person he lusted. You're repeating the exact same talking points that the people who want to rape YOU. The people who you promote will not spare you.

I've got to say something rn.
im so disappointed in some of the WLW community. I see so many posts talking about how bi women shouldn't use "lesbian terminology" like "butch" or "pillow princess". about how m-spec lesbians are appropriating lesbian culture. BI EXCLUSIONISTS: Y'ALL NEED TO LEARN UR HISTORY BEFORE YOU TRY TO EDUCATE OTHERS. bi women were historically included in the label lesbian until they were pushed out by exclusionists. Sappho? the one everybody calls a lesbian? by today's definition, she was bisexual (I have the source at the bottom if you want). hating on m-spec lesbians makes me feel so lonely. instead, why don't we use that energy to address biphobia in the sapphic community? (NOTE: ik most lesbians are not biphobic. i love and care about my les sibs but I can't shy away from this subject.)

Women who are attracted to only women in the 70s: we should have are own community
Women who are attracted to both men and women in the 70: cool so you are going to make your own separate community.
Women who are attracted to only women in the 70s: 😂😂😂 (kick bi and pan women out of the lesbian community)
Women who are attracted to both men and women in the 70: cool I am going to go by bi lesbians to describe my live experiences.
"lesbians" in 2024: OMG the concept of bi-lesbian is lesbophobic because I am incapable of doing a Google search on the history of the term.

When bisexual girls are in relationships with men, we’re assumed to be heterosexual. That being interested in women never mattered, that if we’re in a straight-passing relationship, we’re straight now.
The thing that a lot of ppl don’t realize, is that when we’re with a girl, it doesn’t magically undo the bi-erasure. Now, bisexual girls are assumed to be lesbians. Now, being interested in men never mattered, a bisexual girl in a lesbian-passing relationship is lesbian now.
We get erased from all sides. Poison Ivy gets the same treatment irl bisexuals do, and it’s aggravating to see even a beloved fictional character get her identity erased.

Oh not this imbecilic biphobic Wiki about Conrad doubting of his bisexuality, even if he comfirmed it himself, because they "never knew of an affair while he was married". This is the purest biphobia bullshit. I can't understand how someone that writes about fucking Conrad Veidt can be such a biphobic idiot that DOUBTS someone's bisexuality because they shamelessly believe bisexuals can't be faithful to their partners. Bisexuals aren't traitors, asshole people are. Does the author of this Wiki feels bothered when straight men cheat on their wives with prostitutes, work friends or even their own friends/relatives? I don't think so.
And worse, to think a person isn't bisexual because they date someone of the opposite gender, another horribly dumb misconception. Bisexuality is literally being attracted by BOTH MEN AND WOMEN (and non-binary folks as well), not cheating on their partners. If someone knows who this biphobic author is, please let me know.

The moment you realize that bisexuality is the direct antithesis of radical feminism and terfs, everything starts to make sense
There's a direct correlation between biphobia and transphobia to a point where you can draw a venn diagram between the two, and it will just be a circle, a very sad circle, but a circle nonetheless
Biphobia and transphobia go hand in hand. You can't have one without the other
