I'm currently rewatching The Hobbit movie trilogy and honestly I do love the movies despite how they deviate from the book. Thorin is one of my fav characters ever and Richard did amazing. Curious about your favs and thoughts n feelings on the movies
Hiya! Okay. Well, I just finished the Battle of Five Armies just a few hours ago, so let's see.
The first movie, I liked well enough. They changed some things but overall kept the feel of the story, and though The Hobbit is a short book, doing a page for page adaptation just...would not work, it would be a mess. So I understand. All in all I found it enjoyable, with that warm fantasy sweetness well mixed in.
I really don't like the addition of Azog was necessary, at all. And I do wish they'd given Radagast a little bit more respect, at the least not put that bird mess in his hair and down his clothes. And while the troll scene was pretty good, hearing the dwarves scream about how very many parasites they had was a little jarring, and poor Bilbo, used as a tissue!
(Also, Fili and Kili are the Bill and Ted of the dwarves).
I would watch the first movie again, and I'll probably end up buying it.
The second movie...I did not enjoy.
My biggest issues were with Legolas and Tariual and Kili and Thranduial. Legolas shouldn't even be there, and his personality was very different. He didn't really seem like Legolas. Tariual I did not like having in there, but I just felt bad for her mostly, because her only purpose as a character is to be somebody's girlfriend. If you cut out the romance, there's nothing to her, theres nothing that makes her special or unique or interesting. And that's a shame. Also Kili's trousers line? Shame.
Also Legoas was rude as hell about Gloin's wife and child (its Gimli haha, Legolas said he was a little goblin thing and later on they become literally inseparable haha) and I just did not like that.
The third movie....was...
Well, spoilers at this point for anyone who hasn't seen it, but
Fili and Kili should have died together. They should not have separated them like that.
Also I really hated Kili saying that Taurial made him feel young. It's so cliche on it's own and him? HIM? KILI felt OLD beforehand? Since WHEN? If they'd wanted that line, they should've given it to Taurial, that at least would've made slightly more sense. But my sibling and I discussed it, and since in human years Kili would've been around thirty, we decided that he was just having a crisis. And Crisis Kili I can at least understand saying that a bit more.
Ah! Ah! I nearly forgot, why was Kili's head being cradled by a basket walnuts? That choice boggles me, I can't understand it.
Bard was a good father, and it was refreshing to see that for once.
The were-worms....shouldn't have been. We already have five armies going on, we don't need this HUGE EXISTENCE just randomly introduced like that.
Thorin and Bilbo's last scene was done very well, though when he (Bilbo) said his goodbyes to the party, it brought up an issue that has bugged me throughout-
THERE IS NOT ENOUGH AFFECTION IN THESE MOVIES
Hug, kiss, hold, clasp. These are Thorin's friends, his family, they all care so much about each other, but they rarely physically express it, and they should have, because that is a constant thread in Tolkien's works.
Thorin pressing his forehead to Fili's? That was amazing, there should have been more of that, spread out all amongst them. (Also, criminal underuse of Fili, across the board, btw).
And all the moments with Galadrial and Elrond ect and the ring I thought was both unnecessary and bogging down to the story. I know they want to make that connect to the LOTR movies clear, but theres already a lot going in Hobbit storyline in it's own right.
Bilbo and Thorin were my favorites, well cast and well acted. (Though I wish, I wish that they had given Thorin a proper full dwarven beard, Fili and Kili are the babies of the group so I can understand why for them, but this is the king! His beard should've been majestic).
So, to sum up- The first movie wasn't a great book adaptation but it was a pretty solid movie, and I enjoyed it.
And while the second and third ones had their moments that I liked, on the whole I didn't enjoy them very much, and I probably wouldn't watch them again, at least not anytime soon.
These are just my options though, you like them and that's good, because it truly is a wonderful story.

10 films I love (and am incapable of being normal about)
i was tagged! thank you @aerogadyne
The LOTR set of films - where do i even start. formative. incredible. comfort movies that make me cry so hard i feel like my skull's been split in two. i read the books as a young child and once the movies came out i was lost in them.
Rogue One oh my god i rarely have the brainspace or capacity to sit through an entire movie but i saw this in theatres three fuckin' times. Jyn is my phone background still. if you talk to me abt rogue one i start snapping and biting like an overexcited dog -
Treasure Planet. deeply personal, incredibly touching and the animation is delicious and shoved into my mouth thanks
Bill and Ted's excellent adventure listen i had a friend in high school who would watch all these cool old films and many times he was like 'yo munk you need to see this' which is 75% of the movies i consumed at the time. Bill and Ted is fucking excellent. 10/10. due a rewatch.
Dogma another of the movies my highschool friend introduced me to (along with most of Jay and Silent Bob universe, tbh) and every once in a while i think about 'not born..... shit into existence' and giggle
13 going on 30 listen. LISTEN. when i want a sappy, comfort-y romcom that makes my heart feel full, then i want this one. fairly certain i had a crush on the lead actress
21 (+22) Jumpstreet alright im just outing myself as watching fairly silly movies but channing tatum in these movies is genuinely a gem and the humor vibes with me
Anastasia as much as the noise the train made when it fell of the tracks freaked me out, the glitter in her tiara and dress more than made up for it. another movie that easily makes me cry
Ronja Robbers Daughter the grief. the generational strife. the music. the rebirth from winter into spring. the weight of growing up. the theme music. a complicated father-daughter relationship. augh
Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train technically cheating since i watched the anime episodes but im squeezing it in here. kyojirou, my love, my light.
i thiiiiiiiink most people have done this already? consider this an open invitation/tag to fill it out 👀

‘Toku’ Tuesday 30 - you know what? let’s do the Matrix!
it’It’s Tuesday! And I hear there’s a new Matrix film out dir. Lana ‘please be less racist I’m begging you’ Wachowski - which seems a rather unnecessary affair all round and is apparently not especially novel or interesting. But whatever - it seems to be something of a 2000score week so let’s go down this particular memory lane to the land of green-tinted, half-cg wire fu.
Tumblr media
The Matrix probably doesn’t need a lot of introductions in these circles - alongside LotR and Shrek, it was one of the first movies to ride the wave of the nascent internet meme ecosystem - but I think it would be interesting to approach it with 30-year-old eyes rather than primary school ones and dig up a few production anecdotes. (Here is a Bryn anecdote: I once printed out various stills from the movie on printer paper and taped them to the inside of my locker at school.)
The Matrix is essentially a big tribute to the tradition of Hong Kong martial arts movies, by way of a scifi spin on Baudrillard. Such martial arts movies are something I definitely treat in depth at some point, but definitely too big a subject to tackle tonight; suffice to say that the movie industry in Hong Kong built a highly refined cinematographic language to tell stories about people beating each other up, performed by many charismatic martial artist stars like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao and Donnie Yen. . And indeed, The Matrix features the work of Yuen Woo-Ping as a choreographer - but more on that in a little bit.
At the outset of their careers, the Wachowskis - already doing basically everything together - were comics writers who decided to try their hand at selling a script to the movies. Their first script featured cannibals eating rich people, but this was, while good, apparently a little too on the nose for studio executives; instead, they managed to sell the script to a movie called Assassins (1994) to Warner Bros, only to see it almost completely rewritten, an experience that led them to decide to become directors (apparently you can just do that) working on the scripts they sold in the Assassins deal.
Tumblr media
Their first project as directors was an explicit, noir-y heist movie called Bound (1996) about a lesbian couple conspiring to steal money from the mafia. This was fairly successful, so The Matrix was greenlit, although the high budget (for the time) and ‘philosophical themes’ gave the studio pause. This changed after the Wachowskis pulled in some comicfriends for a detailed storyboard:
The Wachowskis therefore hired underground comic book artists Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce to draw a 600-page, shot-by-shot storyboard for the entire film.[35] The storyboard eventually earned the studio's approval, and it was decided to film in Australia to make the most of the budget.[33]
And at the same time, they approached Will Smith to play the main character Neo; he elected to instead go for Wild Wild West. Instead, they recruited the now familiar group of...
Tumblr media
Keanu Reeves took Smith’s place as hacker turned anti-robot revolutionary [and also trans allegory] Neo. Very well known guy now; at the time he was best known at the time for being one of the time-travelling stoners Bill and Ted, but also had recently started appearing in sci-fi action movies like Johnny Mnemonic (1995) and Chain Reaction (1996)
Laurence Fishburne became the mentor-figure and spaceship pilot Morpheus. At this point he’d recently come off of sci-fi horror film Event Horizon (1997), and was in the 90s starring in a pretty wide range of films - dramas like Boyz n the Hood (1991) and Higher Learning (1995), noir movies like King of New York (1990), biopics like What’s Love Got to Do With It (1993) and indeed doing a shakespeare with Othello (1995)
Carrie-Anne Moss got to be Trinity, one of Morpheus’s main operatives and Neo’s love interest; at the time she was pretty much only appearing in B-movies, of which The Secret Life of Algernon (1997) is one of the only to merit a wiki article.
Hugo Weaving had not yet been Elrond, and at the time would have been perhaps known for playing one of the two main characters in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) about two drag queens, one of them a trans woman, going on a road trip across Australia. His most recent role was then The Interview (1998) in which he played a suspected serial killer in police custody. He got to take his very severe persona to be ‘Agent Smith’, an AI program tasked with maintaining the Matrix who manifests as a suited human.
The Wachowskis at this point were still reasonably crazy in an interesting way rather than a rich person way, so they put these actors through an intense training regime to try and both school them on the philosophical themes allegedly underlying the films, and also train them for Hong Kong style wire-fu stunts at Yuen’s standard...
The cast were required to be able to understand and explain The Matrix.[33] French philosopher Jean Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation was required reading for most of the principal cast and crew.[38] In early 1997, the Wachowskis had Reeves read Simulacra and Simulation, Kevin Kelly's Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems, and the Economic World, and [former Lacanian psychoanalyst] Dylan Evans's ideas on evolutionary psychology even before they opened up the script,[16] and eventually he was able to explain all the philosophical nuances involved.[33] Moss commented that she had difficulty with this process.[16]
The directors had long been admirers of Hong Kong action cinema, so they decided to hire the Chinese martial arts choreographer and film director Yuen Woo-ping to work on fight scenes. To prepare for the wire fu, the actors had to train hard for several months.[33] The Wachowskis first scheduled four months for training, beginning in October 1997.[39] Yuen was optimistic but then began to worry when he realized how unfit the actors were.[25]
Baudrillard, for his part, was not impressed by the film’s interpretation of his body of theory.
Tumblr media
Which other figure to mention? Of course it would be John Gaeta, who did the visual effects (c.f. when we watched Speed Racer). He’s the one who figured out how to achieve the vague description of a slow motion scene with a moving camera:
When John Gaeta read the script, he pleaded with an effects producer at Mass.Illusion to let him work on the project, and created a prototype that led to him becoming the film's visual effects supervisor.[73]
This became known as ‘bullet time’, created at the time by firing precisely timed still cameras to create the appearance of fast camera motion in slow motion. (Nowadays, high speed cameras are more common, so such elaborate rigs are less likely to be necessary).
Gaeta’s success here would propel him to even more elaborate production techniques like we discussed on Speed Racer, ambitiously reinventing the whole visual language of film to draw on ‘animetism’... which mostly just led the path to the Marvel movie. Road to hell etc. etc. [The Matrix, also, took heavy inspiration from anime, especially Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell (Animation Night 39).]
Tumblr media
The enormous success of the Matrix - a pretty tight action film, for all that some of its fundamental premise (humans as batteries) is kind of ridiculous - led to two the immediate filming of more sequels in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Resurrections, and no doubt inspired a whole generation’s obsession with leather trenchcoats. These movies were a lot more convulted narratively and more CGI driven, and generally regarded much less well, but they have some striking images. Juno Reactor were brought on to provide the music, and there’s a whole extended rave scene, which is probably suggestive of what the Wachowskis might have been getting up to.
Meanwhile, they were flush with money to send over to Japan, recruiting a large group of anime directors and studios to create a group of side stories for The Matrix in the form of The Animatrix. This features some of my absolute favourite short animated films, such as Shinya Ohira’s astonishing work in Kid’s Story. It also includes the second and last outing of Square Pictures, whose Final Fantasy: Spirits Within we watched last week (Animation Night 85), who created a striptease sword fight in Final Flight of the Osiris; the legendary Takeshi Koike, later to create Redline, rose to a high profile with the short film World Record; Mahiro Maeda fleshed out the backstory with the beautifully ridiculous Second Renaissance pair; Koji Morimoto deployed his usual stylistic flair on a story about kids encountering an anomaly in a ruined house; they even managed to track down Peter Chung to basically do a Matrixed-up episode of Aeon Flux (see Animation Night 52). To me, the Animatrix is definitely the highlight of the whole franchise and I’m looking forward to seeing that again!
Tumblr media
Alongside this came a variety of other side projects, including an MMO which is apparently still considered part of the main story because the Wachowskis are the Wachowskis. Morpheus dies in it? Fucked up, I don’t know much about it.
Anyway, OK, that’s the rundown of anecdotes, and we’re running of time. What to say about the Wachowskis? They’re... tricky figures; subculturally a lot closer to Us Lot than most people in the movies (they’re trans, they go to bdsm clubs, they read scifi comics and they’re huge weebs) but also heavily insulated by their wealth and severely afflicted by rich-personitis. They like a lot of the things that I like, but they tend to fumble it when they follow that inspiration. So... I guess we tend to be obliged to pay attention to what they do, and yet it’s hard not to be a little ‘oh, not again’ when they put their foot in it once more, usually with racism (it’s just vital, and not utterly deranged, to film Cloud Atlas with yellowface. No other way they could adapt that book.) I tend to receive a lot of what they do as fascinatingly misguided, sometimes endearingly chuunibyou, but I would understand if your feeling is instead mostly frustration that such people get to be the trans girls who make it, or with the lack of inspiration in some of their later works.
And now, years later, after a variety of distinctive - usually terribly flawed, often still interesting - projects, we have The Matrix Resurrections, which brings Neo and Trinity back, now much older. I’ve avoided learning too much about this film, though from my friends I’ve heard it’s dropped the ball on being novel and interesting and weird, which seems the worst betrayal of what made The Matrix worthwhile - far better to make a janky bad film that does something fucked up and new than make it just another franchise, but I guess the nostalgia window has stepped into the 2000s. Instead, the biggest tech flex seems to be the real-time photorealistic VR tech demo The Matrix Awakens, which - for all that it really does look pretty convincingly photoreal - could be called a desperate attempt to justify the ongoing production of new games consoles and graphics cards. (Like pay attention to the actual gameplay. It’s QTEs and shooting.)
youtube
Well, whatever, the demon fascination of movie-making lives yet in my head - and it has been a very, very long time since I saw any of The Matrix. So tonight we’re staying up late to watch all five filmic parts of the series back to back (I will try to mix in the Animatrix between movies as appropriate). Will it hold up? Will I appreciate whatever the hell the sequels were doing a bit more this time around? Will it just feel painfully orientalist? Will the action sequences still feel impressive after so many more years of CGI dev? Let’s find out; They-Wish-It-Was-Toku Tuesday 30 will be starting shortly at https://twitch.tv/canmom

My name is Jessica, I'm 19, 20 on the 29th, bisexual, a cancer, and an ISFP.
I'm a massive geek, in love with musicals and horror films, the youngest in my family, and I'm really short. 5"1 I think?
I'm depressed with anxiety but I try getting out. I love listening to music, musicals specifically, country, pop, electronic, rap sometimes, and olden day music like the 60's-90s. I love supernatural, teen wolf, buffy the vampire slayer, black mirror, all american, brooklyn 99, glee, parks and rec. I love musical movies, knives out, the bill and Ted films, marvel, lotr, Harry Potter, horror (as well as slashers) of course, and comedies.
I love wearing hats, vests, jackets, and fandom related clothes. I have a cat called kacy and my mum and I have a kitten called dash. I also love karaoke, collecting flowers, dancing, singing, my fave actor is bill hader and my fave actress is lily rabe. I collect stuff too, like pop vinyls, pins, etc, and I love playing video- games and doing quizzes.
I eat lemons (I'm weird) and I have a dancing cactus called Bob, and a plush pumbaa I got when I was 6.
Plus I like cosplaying, am really nostalgic
Sorry if this is a lot :(
I feel terrible for writing this much.
don't feel bad about writing so much!! more info helps me out a lot, really. but,,

Misty (obviously) loves music, especially 70s music and would love to have karaoke nights with you. There probably isn't a time where you DON'T have music playing. She also loves dancing with you too it, bodies swaying to the beat together, sharing a few stolen kisses.
Misty is also a big lover of nature and animals, when she first sees your cats she instantly starts cooing over them.
She loves walking around outside with you too, admiring nature and getting out of the house. she'll 100% make flower crowns out of any flowers you pick along the way, adores it if you lay your head in her lap while she works on it for you.

Ahem. I'm gonna be an annoying bitch. I've got a few questions for you. Favorite color, food and member of One Direction and BTS. (I suppose you would say Larry in 1d) Favorite fan fiction of all time. (Mine's OMCBA and LE) Favorite subject at school. (I'd go with history. I've liked it since I was a young student.) And now. My favorite question The movie that you'll never forget. Thank you for reading this. P. S I haven't even finished Chapter Two
TUMBLR GOERS, SCROLL HECKA FAST FOR JUST ONE SECOND. ITS LONGISH. Oh okay. Welp, my favourite colours are the combo of purple and green. Favourite food is.....pass. Member of 1d is either harry or niall, i dont really know. Musically, harry. And personality, niall. But i dont really have one. Im not really following them in general, but out of everyone i still do, its harry and niall i go to. Bts is impossible to choose omg, but my bias is still undeniably yoongi/suga. No man has hit my heart quite like him in my life, but kwon jiyong and lee taeyong are right behind him, theyre just not bts. but i cant...downplay the other members of bts. theyre essential as well. I dont have a fav fanfiction cuz i cant remember the ones i read back in the day. But i had an author i liked reading and became friends with but i forgot her penname...something 98. Ss? ss98 looks and sounds right. She and i are into that dark shit. I cant remember the works tho 😬favourite subject is definitely a language, and that includes my own. So literature or a foreign language + history ofc. Anything anthro and culturey, i pale at mathematics. The movie that ill never forget oh wow. Theres a few. lets put the big massive shit out of the way, so aside from the lotr, star wars, and hp series, all series aside, and the labyrinth / dark crystal and neverending story aside..what first comes to mind is probably amelie. I really have the fattest crush on that film. I also really love the descent, which is odd cuz its just a horror film, but i also think it's a beautiful horror film? Lol. Idk i saw it when i was young and ive been watching it at least once a year since, i love it a lot. The soundtrack makes me smile, i know like all the lines, and i pull lines from it all the time in every day life, and disregarding the sequel which was trash (sequels generally are) i loved the fact that...well i wont spoil it. i just loved how hopeless the characters were. There were no easy ways out, and it was realistic. It was just really well made and underrated. Okay. Uh..also goodfellas. FANTASTIC movie, fuck. My friends and i used to play ....the equivalent of a drinking game but with a much different substance invoved to that movie based on a detail that came up a certain amount of times for films, and the night it was goodfellas, ill never forget. I also love heathers. Cuz slater was my god as a child. One of them. Boondock saints, one and two. Me and my sisters thing. Mom has a tattoo that relates to that. The grudge because that was my first horror film that i secretly watched and it stayed in my peabrain for so long. Im 22 btw, but that movie was 2004. Then Veer-Zaara for sure. Omg i fucking love veer zaara. It makes me feel all kinds of things, i sing those songs in my sleep. Beautiful fucking story. Kal ho naa ho, too. basically anything spun up by yash and aditya chopra is a-okay with me, ESPECIALLY if ill be seeing shah rukh khan in it, which is almost a given. Theres movies i cant forget for horrible reasons, the wall (pink floyd film) and requiem for a dream included, perhaps trainspotting too, but those are for personal reasons. Most unforgettable movies are good things. Im forgetting a lot. The muppet movie, young frankenstein, terminator, haunting in connecticut, the babadook (when you know what it IS from the book), rocky horror picture show, a clockwork orange, the crow, beetlejuice, edward scissorhands, crybaby, whats eating gilbert grape, grease, but im a cheerleader, v for vendetta, crouching tiger hidden dragon, silent hill, sound of music, titanic, footloose (the 80s one ofc), what dreams may come, big fish, a walk on the moon, the breakfast club, chocolat, the return of the pink panther, jay and silent bob strike back, school of rock, better off dead, shanghai noon, bill and teds excellent adventure, wizard of oz, fear and loathing in las vegas, underworld, interview with a vampire, i guess les miserables but broadway is better, elizabeth, a very long engagement, batteries not included, and final fantasy advent children are all moves that mean a LOT TO ME LOL. So much.

Let Me Count the Ways
A love song to the house that Rod built
Tumblr media
Since the Tauranga project came up, I have, if anything, been even more in love with our house in Karepa Street. And now that the time to leave is so rapidly approaching, I find myself consciously enjoying aspects of the house every day. When the words “how do I love thee? Let me count the ways” came to mind, rather than simply quote them, I checked out the sonnet.
How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)
Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806 - 1861
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of being and ideal grace. I love thee to the level of every day’s Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for right. I love thee purely, as they turn from praise. I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.
Out of the jumbled mess of thoughts about the house that had me stymied at first, came a wee bit of order as I found myself responding to words and phrases:
Tumblr media
depth and breadth and height
I love the physical dimensions and space of the house. Its nooks and crannies - the attic, the storeroom, the secret passage under the stairs. The way you can swing round the column at the bottom of the lower staircase. The “passing bay”, from which I love to look down on the living areas below.
When we first moved in, I felt like the house flowed around us. It felt incredible.
Walking down the hallway to the sanctuary of my room with its garden view. Seeing our beloved cats, Bill and Ted, peering out at us through their windows in the laundry door.  Hearing tuis by day and moreporks by night. Skidding along the bamboo floor in our socks. Napping on the window seat in the sun.
Coming home to the drama of the views. Oh those views! How much they make us feel connected to the harbour and the hills, the city and the skies.
Tumblr media
height my soul can reach
I love the height of the house and the way it’s perched up here on the hill. The way we look up, look down, look out at nature. The way nature can look up, look down and look in at us.  It feeds our souls.
The way autumn compensates for chasing away summer by bringing us more varied skies to watch. The luxury of enjoying bad weather when we’re snug inside. The drama of seeing a southerly coming in.
The ever changing aspect of water and hills stretching away from us.
The relatively short-lived, and therefore much appreciated, colour of our summer garden.
The pohutakawa tree above us. The wild fruit tree below us. The sight and sound of the birds who visit the garden in such numbers.
Tumblr media
everyday’s most quiet need
I love the serenity. How the different winds can carry the sounds of sirens in the city or big planes at the airport up to us, but the house always feels tranquil.
How quiet my bedroom is at night. You’d never guess you were within walking distance of the central city.
How often my body knows to look up at dusk and drink in my favourite “Blue Time of View”. It makes my heart sing. Every single time.
How often my baby and I have found each other in the living room on sleepless nights, just sitting and gazing. The nightime view might just be the most peaceful and mesmerising of all.
Tumblr media
feeling out of sight
I love the complete privacy from the outside world that we can retreat to in the bedrooms.
The surprise of what’s hiding below the double garage on the drive.
The perfect possie in the very open living room where I chill in my easy chair, unseen by neighbours.
Our secluded courtyard.
The tiny pond where tiny fish hide from prying eyes.
Tumblr media
the ends of being
I love the way boundaries dissolve here. How understandings and perceptions of physical spaces are stretched. How you’re encouraged to look up and out.
The drama of the double height dining room. The many piñatas we’ve hung from the possie struts. The seemingly endless ways Rod found to use the height in our midwinter party decorations.
First time guests getting lost trying to find their way out again.
Having answers to the questions: how do you wash the windows and change the lights?
Tumblr media
by sun
I love the way the house pulls sunshine in.
The tall west-facing window bringing in dappled autumn light. Light reflected by the white house next door, bouncing in through the bathroom windows and lighting up our tunnel of a hallway .
Sunrises over the harbour, pink sunsets gleaming on snow-peaked Tararuas.
Coming out of the bedroom on a winter morning and seeing the glow of our dawn-filled living area lighting up the end of the hallway.
The never ending temptation to take yet another photo.
Tumblr media
and candlelight
I love the “fairyland” the house becomes after dark.
The lights we can play with. Creating a warm glow bringing our focus in, albeit with the ever-present glamour of the city lights below.
All the space to store extra crockery and glasses, chairs and decorations, that we can pull out to make a party out of just about any occasion.
How much our whanau and friends have also enjoyed the way the house lends itself to celebration.
Tumblr media
with a passion
I love the way we all found room here in which to nurture our passions. We even managed to play cricket in our tiny courtyard!
How our boys and “my” boys used (and dinged) every inch of the space over nearly 2 decades.
Talisman, Bionicles, Risk, LOTR, DS Pokémon, computer games, model Ferraris, bikes, bats and balls, books, books and more books, Rubik’s cubes, teacosies and fingerless gloves, wooden spoons, ping pong and beer pong, foosball, waterbombs, remote control Sumo wrestlers, the expanded universe. 15 Karepa St managed to make space for it all.
The new kitchen, full of new toys, that excited us so much when when we first moved in. Where the Cupcake Queen blossomed. Where feasts were planned and created with love and laughter. And where two dishwashers were worn out.
The kitchen splashback tiles that still give me and Rod joy every time we look at them.
Tumblr media
breath, smile, tears
I love knowing the whole history of the the house, the sweat that went into its every fibre.
How it has nurtured us in return.
The care with which Rod designed the laundry around the cats’ needs.  How I could hear Bill padding along the carpet, following us to our rooms. How Ted found his way home when he was desperately ill and barely able to move.
2 small windows, at the bottom of the laundry door, witness to the smiles Bill and Ted brought us. Our tears when they left us. Deciding to bury their ashes here when we go.
The special light outside the boys’ bunk room. My baby growing out of a cot to a bunk bed to a double bed. My big boy sleeping his way round all 6 bedrooms in his time here. Having each of the 3 boys on a different floor for a few short years.
The cosy nest we call Grandma’s room which housed my French son for 2 months.
The flexibility of the house. How many different visitors we’ve been able to accomodate in different permutations.
The different permutations possible for the dining table. The way the pendant lights can swing round so that they sit perfectly above the table, whether it’s side-on or pointing to the kitchen. How there’s room enough that, by adding Rod’s trestle table, we can expand the table into a very long rectangle or, sometimes, a square.
The joy of filling the house with people.
Tumblr media
I shall but love thee better after
Here’s to the house that Rod built.
And here’s to its next family. May their love affair last just as long.

‘Michelangelo? You know a lot about him. Life's work, political aspirations. Him and the pope. Sexual orientation. The whole works, right? I bet you can't tell me what it smells like in the Sistine Chapel. You never actually stood there and looked up at that beautiful ceiling. Seeing that. If I ask you about women, you'll probably give me a syllabus of your personal favorites. You may have even been laid a few times. But you can't tell me what it feels like to wake up next to a woman and feel truly happy. You're a tough kid. I ask you about war, you'd probably throw Shakespeare at me, right? "Once more into the breach, dear friends." But you've never been near one. You've never held your best friend's head in your lap and watch him gasp his last breath lookin' to you for help. If I asked you about love, you'd probably quote me a sonnet, but you've never looked at a woman and been totally vulnerable. Known someone that could level you with her eyes. Feelin' like God put an angel on Earth just for you, who could rescue you from the depths of hell.’
37. Movie quote that will always make you laugh?
I: “Where the white women at?”
S: ‘I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast!’ ‘You eat pieces of shit for breakfast?’ -long pause- ‘No!’

‘A shootout is a fucking shootout!!....Like a Western’
‘You think that’s a Schwiiiiiin’
‘I eat the Canadian? I don’t know what you’re talking about’
‘I don’t read the script, the script reads me’ ‘What the hell does that even mean??’
‘oh nothing Tommy, it’s….tip-top, it’s just i’m not sure about the colour’
All the other quotes I find funny are completely random movie quotes that my family has just turned into a joke and that we can easily incorporate into conversation e.g. ‘whadaya gonna do ranger rick, shoot me?’ ‘I could do that’, ‘you sir, too sir’, ‘I don’t want Nenat’, ‘I drive’, ‘you want uhhh money or something’, ‘yeah i like dags’, ‘there is no spoon’ ETC you get the point

5k Survey XXIII
1101. Continued…Let’s see if I’m psychic.
You wrote three yes or no questions. Now I will answer them. 1 yes 2 no 3 no
Did I get any right? >> Wow, you can shove 18 jumbo marshmallows into your mouth at once? That’s impressive. You’re right, I cannot do that. But why were you eating marshmallows at all if you don’t like them? (Maybe you spit them back out afterwards.)
1102. You wrote one question that can be answered with a color (example: what color is my car). I say…. White. Is it true? >> False, Coldplay’s first hit was not called “White”.
1103. You thought of a number between 1 and 100 and typed it down. Was it 14? >> Not even close.
1104. You wrote one more question, anything you wanted. The answer is yes, 42, orange, Matt, Josh, Kim, Nicole, whatever or your mom. Does that answer your question? >> “Yes” is the right answer to “are you fuckin with me?”, I think, yeah.
1105. Do you think that Britney Spears would make a good Bond Girl? >> I’ve never thought about it.
1106. Have you read anything by C.S. Lewis? >> No. 1107. What is your favorite movie with Bill Murray? >> Hmm. I can’t remember many Bill Murray movies. He did appear briefly in Zombieland, and that was pretty funny... 1108. What is your favorite movie with Jack Nicholson? >> I don’t have a favourite movie with Jack Nicholson. I guess The Shining was pretty all right. 1109. What is your favorite movie with Christopher Walken? >> The Sentinel and The Prophecy, hands down. 1110. What is your favorite movie with Johnny Depp? >> Edward Scissorhands. 1111. What is your favorite movie with Orlando Bloom? >> I got nothin. I mean, LOTR was pretty good. 1112. What rhymes with ‘orange’? >> Nothing, I assume. 1113. Why do guys have nipples if they will never need to feed a baby? >> I’m not Google. 1114. Some people think that couples should be screened before they are allowed to reproduce (so that people who cannot afford to support a child don’t have one, or so that a child won’t be born into a dysfunction family or to unfit parents). What do you think about this? >> I’ve heard that idea a lot, and I still have no opinion on it aside from “that sounds like eugenics” and I am pretty damn leery of anything that sounds like eugenics. 1115. Have you ever swallowed an object by accident? >> Not an object, no. Just stuff like hard candy. 1116. Did you get it back? >> Well, I didn’t, but the toilet did eventually, right? 1117. Do you prefer He-Man or She-Ra? >> I’ve no knowledge of either. 1118. Are you proud of yourself? >> Not particularly. But Can Calah is proud of me, so that’s okay. 1119. Who should go to hell? >> No one should go to fucking hell, fuck off. 1120. Is your eyesight 20/20? >> More or less, I guess. I have zero problems with my eyesight (aside from sensory defensiveness, which does impact my ability to see in bright conditions, but not in the same way). 1121. Have you ever had insomnia? >> No. 1122. Does it bother you when people touch you? >> Yes. 1123. Is it better to get too much or too little sleep? >> I guess if I really had to choose, I’d choose too much. It doesn’t feel great, exactly, but I can usually function better than I do on not enough sleep. 1124. Have you ever given away something you made? What? >> Probably. 1125. Is it better to have kids when you are in your teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, or older? >> --- 1126. What gets your adrenaline pumping? >> Oh, the usual. Anxiety, fear, that sort of thing. 1127. Is hell all fire and brimstone or is it personal for everyone like in Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey? Or does it not exist? >> Ah, I loved that movie. I have to keep that in mind next time I’m asked about sequels I enjoyed, because I was so worried I wouldn’t like Bogus Journey as much as I liked Excellent Adventure and let me tell you, I needn’t have worried at all, lmao. Anyway, I highly fuckin doubt hell exists. 1128. Do you ever talk about yourself in the third person? >> Sometimes. 1129. What’s your favorite radio station? What kind of music do they play? >> --- 1130. What did you think of these movies: Election? Gone With the Wind?  Fight Club? Meh. Spider Man? Which one? The Virgin Suicides? I tried to watch this recently and I just got bored. Resident Evil? I haven’t seen this in so long I don’t remember the plot or anything. Signs? Liked this one a lot more than I expected to. Also, my man Joaquin Phoenix is in it, so. Muppets from Space?  Pearl Harbor?  Halloween Resurrection?  The Dark Crystal? I thought this was lovely. I should watch the show at some point.
1131. Is everyone special? >> I mean, if everyone’s special, no one is, right? Or something. I don’t care, tbh. 1132. Are your toes: Painted (what color)? The answer to all these except “soft” is “no”. Manicured? Sparkly? Soft?  Wearing a toe ring?  Do you have hobbit-feet?  1133. Do you believe there is any place still undiscovered in all the world? >> Of course. Ideally, it should probably stay that way, at least for now. 1134. Whose picture would you like to paint a target on and throw darts at? >> No one’s. 1135. Is love all you need? >> No, but I’ve had little enough of it that it’s probably at the top of the list somewhere. 1136. Ever caught a fish? >> No. 1137. Are you adventurous? >> Not especially. 1138. Are you afraid of mediocrity? >> No, but sometimes I wish I was less unremarkable. Not that I’d be any more satisfied if I was, lol. 1139. Would you rather die tomorrow or have all your friends die? >> --- 1140. What are 3 things you don’t understand? >> Meh. 1141. I would do anything for love but I won’t do 'that’. What is 'that’? >> “That” encompasses a lot of things. 1142. Has your diary ever been rated? >> --- 1143. Do you do more than kiss on the first date? >> --- 1144. Are you very liberal or conservative? >> From what I can tell, I’m pretty squarely liberal. 1145. What do you like about your neighbors? >> Nothing. I think about homicide almost daily when it comes to them. 1146. I read that by 2010 they expect to market a gene therapy procedure that will increase the life spans of adult human beings by double or triple. If this happened would you have it done? >> That sounds ridiculous and improbable. Besides, being purely hypothetical and imagining a thing like this did happen to exist, do you think poor ass non-contributors to society like me are going to have access to it? Get real. 1147. If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands. Did you clap? >> No. 1148. Was this year a good year for you? >> It was... a year. 1149. What are you looking forward to next year? >> It’s still the middle of this year, why am I thinking about the next one? 1150. Are you a Jim Henson fan? >> No.

warning:  this was a casual review of the movie Outcast, until it wasn’t (and then it kept going)
i just watched Outcast, because it was free on Tubitv and because it had Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen on top billing. the fact that it was supposed to be set in 12th century China was even more baffling, and probably racist. it has a 5% on Rotten Tomatoes. but...
but i had to know. i had to see this for myself. so i did.
and now that i have, i’m puzzled as to what exactly they were going for.
amongst other things, they literally forget about one character. there’s a random peasant girl, and i say that because that’s how she was first introduced, and given that she has virtually no other scenes and does literally nothing of significance, she’s still just a random peasant girl by the end of the movie.
the only thing she contributes is that, by rescuing her, Hayden Christensen’s PTSD Crusade veteran can be reminded he’s redeemable. she interacts maybe once with each main character afterwards in short, terse scenes. tomorrow i’ll wake up, remember watching Outcast, and struggle with my own memory on if there was a fourth character in that movie and call bullshit on myself. that might even be the main point of writing this, to prove it wasn’t a completely mundane embellishment on my part.
and i start off mentioning that, because it’s the only way to explain how Nicolas Cage is in a movie where he’s missing an eye, sports the most improbable and jarring hairstyle yet, and at one point wears live snakes on his arms while yelling in incomprehensible angrish at Hayden Christensen who is in a fever dream, and yet i have to remind myself of those details because his character is somehow forgettable.
and i may be biased, but i imagine it has to do with how little he is in the movie. I’d be surprised if he were in more than 30 minutes of the entire movie. he’s there in the prologue, appears in a handful of flashbacks, then shows up at the end to have a dramatic Boromir-esque final stand shortly after telling his whole “here’s what i was up to between the beginning of the movie and now, it’s very tragic, let me tell you, in words, in expository dialogue, in this incredibly visual medium, what happened to me and why you should care”
another thing i’m going to remember tomorrow is Nic Cage’s shockingly mediocre rousing speech to his troops ala King Theoden at Helm’s Deep (the LotR references are apt in the worst way, trust me), because no such thing happened, and yet it needed to, for the climactic battle of traitorous Blackguard vs. Nic Cage’s wacky mountain bandits. because otherwise, the mountain bandits have no incentive to risk their lives for the falsely-framed prince--it’s been established multiple times that no other group, not the palace guards, nor town inhabitants, nor merchant caravans from the Middle East, were willing to fight on behalf of the true heir to the throne against the patricidal tyrant prince.
but no such speech happened. there’s an incredibly bitter reunion between the two white Crusade veterans where they clear up a minor misunderstanding, become friends, and then suddenly not only Nic Cage but his entire mountain bandit gang are down to fight against impossible odds against the best soldiers of the empire. at the very least they needed a scene where they somehow agreed they were going to do this thing, but they didn’t even go through the motions.
i was actually confused when i saw them starting to collectively mess with jars and powder and stuff. i thought they might be deciding to flee or something, and then i was wondering if i must have misheard or misinterpreted the past several minutes of dialogue. What was their plan, exactly? I understand why it had to be a last, desperate stand with no possible escape routes (hence the Helm’s Deep reference)--because the prologue of the movie had to have a call-back at the end, with the turntables bieng turned. very poetic, yes.
but there’s no indication that this battle has to happen. They’re deep in the mountains. They’re being harried by a force of fully armed and heavily armored infantry. They had to cross a large river and were only seen getting across in a series of thin, canoe-like boats. there’s every indication that the main characters, aside from Anakin, had time to come up with a plan beside “last stand against hopeless odds” because while i can buy some of the Blackguard catching up to their general area, it couldn’t be the entire overwhelming force presented in the climactic battle.
on the other hand, if in fact several days or even weeks had passed and Anakin was unconscious for the whole time, as opposed to at most a day as all clues indicate, then Nic Cage would have asked the royal siblings and maybe even Random Peasant Girl what the hell was going on, and could have made preparations for escape well before the Blackguard could have arrived in force.
come to think of it, they basically started off a set of character arcs and only like one or two got resolved, namely between Anakin and Chinese Padme. i mean, the character is literally a princess so this analogy actually works. also, the actress clearly was doing the best she could with the script, much like Natalie Portman. it was the most okay thing about the movie. she even gets a feminist speech in on Anakin, though unfortunately his reaction scene is very rushed.
so i’ll always be in favor of gratuitous feminist speeches, as opposed to gratuitous sexist speeches, when it comes to both fiction and real life, and even though it seems rather bold for a 12th century Chinese princess to tell off a white Christian crusader about how the horrors of war also affect women, interrupting his guilt-ridden man-pain pity party at a perfect moment. and he pauses and then says ‘u rite’ which would be fine if the camera didn’t end  the scene with a very short shot of his face turned away from the camera. should have been right on him shoving his foot knee-deep into his own mouth. for symbolism.
and when i say it’s gratuitous, i do believe that’s mostly a function of that scene ending so quickly. if that scene continued, it could have gone somewhere interesting, even flowed into their obvious romantic arc.
finally, the whole concept of a movie about white European crusaders finding themselves caught up in a royal coup in Song Dynasty-era China (unless i’m doing history wrong, which is very possible) after being disillusioned and traumatized by their war experiences in Jerusalem--that’s not a bad concept.
the prospect of following a character who started off galvanized by genuine religious fervor, to struggling with the reality that the Crusades, like the majority of other wars, is about greed and power, then ended up complicit in war crimes and massacres just by doing their job as soldiers and holy duty as Christians--as they go from that to becoming embroiled in the bloodshed of royal succession, that’s a jarring-ass thing. they’re completely difference worlds in every meaningful sense.
but the fact is, the writing isn’t very good, at least not in the state it was clearly cut into, and furthermore, the above concept would only be sufficiently meaningful if the film was done with a Chinese language, where Hayden Christensen and Nicolas Cage do their dialogue in the language of the setting the film is set in. there’s absolutely no way that subtext could be earned when it’s the presence of the two top-billed white males as part of the rationale for a film that was filmed in, set in, and made most of its money in China to have English be the spoken language.
and that’s super annoying because i hate the fact that I have to read the synopsis of a movie like Outcast and be correct in assuming there’s something racist about--because there didn’t have to be. this could have been--no, there COULD BE films featuring multicultural casts of characters set in the distant past that aren’t racist, or pandering, or whatever. i wish i didn’t need the skepticism that i have to that idea.
the whole prospect of different people from different places in the world suddenly cross paths, at a time when the world was so comparatively disconnected it was effectively much larger, and living in different empires were essentially living in different worlds, is always interesting to me, precisely because i’m so bad at history. Just looking at the wikipedia page for my birth year to see what events occurred at the same time i debuted my life, it’s overwhelming.
in 1989 the Showa era gave way to the Heisei era in Japan, a distinction i really only understand in the context of Kamen Rider; Ted Bundy was executed in Florida; the nation of Iran placed a $3 million bounty on Salman Rushdie for authoring The Satanic Verses;  Exxon spilled 240,000 barrels of oil into the waters around Alaska; there were the Tiananmen Square protests; the Game Boy was released; The Berlin Wall is torn down; The Velvet Revolution begins in Prague; Salvadore Dali and Lucille Ball both died that year.
one thing that struck me is how simultaneously few and many names there are in the births and deaths lists. the pattern that emerges from these lists is on the one hand, unsurprising, but on the other, infuriating in a way. performers and politicians populate these lists. everyone else becomes relegated to memory. just like Random Peasant Girl. i could imagine a writer gave her a couple more scenes that would have made her a meaningful character in the movie. and those scenes got deleted, and her story doesn’t make it into the film that people saw.
i just realized how far this has gone from what was originally a review or rant of Outcast. I’ve been watching a lot of video essays recently, most of which are about video game franchises. they’re really well done, at least the one’s I’ve seen. Off of the top of my head I remember the name Noah Caldwell-Gervais, or something like that. Cadwell, maybe. I’d check, but then I’d probably keep writing, at least until the weed wears off completely.
it’s weird how listening and watching essays makes me miss writing/composing essays, giving speeches, and all that. or maybe it’s just weird how i like doing that sort of thing. or how i’m really impressionable. or maybe Outcast was weird.
Outcast *is* weird. I also hope that we’re reaching the tail end of the ongoing film industry convention of giving movies really bland, generic names. Outcast. Jumper. Shooter. mmm, no, i should take back that last point. i’d have to look at more lists of movies to see whether this is just confirmation bias or actually a thing. Jumper and SHooter are way older movies too i think. anyways, i hope that we’re reaching the tail end of a lot of things that are currently ongoing. like white supremacy and continuing to permit systems of governance that permit and entrench white supremacy and other bullshit.
