Another illustration for Penny and the Pocket Dragon by Rebekah Reese is finished! This one was just a delight to draw.
I’d love to have a library of my own. Who wouldn’t, honestly.

"...some stories start in the middle because no one wants to hear the beginning. They can be told quickly because no one wants to know the details. Sometimes all that matters is the conclusion." Thanks to @bibliolifestyle for the gifted copy. Scatterlings by Rešoketšwe Manenzhe was a nice surprise. Manenzhe's writing style is poetic and magical. Her ability to weave a beautiful story filled with folklore and ancestral wisdom kept me captivated until the end. Manenzhe introduced characters with unique voices and perspectives. Although the novel was short, the story was full of deep themes of identity, nationalism, depression, suicidal ideations, trans-racial adoption, colonization and slavery, anti-Blackness, apartheid and miscegenation. The history of Capetown, South Africa is a prominent part of the story and really made me think about the ways that Black African peoples were stripped of their identities and met with racism and anti-Blackness even when they return home to reconnect. Manenzhe shows the ways that trans-racial adoptions don't automatically bring acceptance to Black adoptees. She shows how these same adoptees are left to navigate their identity and microagressions with no support from their adoptive parents because they are ambivalent of their own privilege and participation in colonization. I appreciated how she highlighted the depression and suicidal ideations that Alisa felt having to navigate white spaces and feeling disconnected from her African roots, despite having ancestral giftings. Manenzhe's story is a reminder of the power of storytelling in keeping cultures alive and staying connected to original homelands. The storytelling reminded me of When We Were Birds which I loved. If you enjoy literary and historical fiction interspersed with ancestral wisdom and folklore then consider giving this one a try. I will definitely be looking out for more from this author because this was a stunning debut. #Scatterlings #bibliolifestyle #tbr #RešoketšweManenzhe #bookish #bookrecommendations #books #bookphotography #bookstagram #SouthAfrica #Capetown #reading #amreading #bookcommunity #Africa #20booksbyblackwomen #bookstagrammer #bookreview (at Bushwick) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmSmfhdLElu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

After months of being out of stock, we have hard cover editions of The Memory Librarian by Janelle Monáe!! The short story anthology incl months of being out of stock, we have hard cover editions of The Memory Librarian by Janelle Monáe!! The short story anthology includes stories by @shereereneethomas, Danny Lore, and Yohanca Delgado @yodelnyc. Purchase link in bio:@sistahscifi | www.sistahscifi.com| https://sistahscifi.com/products/the-memory-librarian-and-other-stories-of-dirty-computer-by-janelle-monae Reposted @readinginjenue 🫧 The Memory Librarian by @JanelleMonáe SYNOPSIS: In The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer, singer-songwriter, actor, fashion icon, activist, and worldwide superstar Janelle Monáe brings to the written page the Afrofuturistic world of one of her critically acclaimed albums, exploring how different threads of liberation—queerness, race, gender plurality, and love—become tangled with future possibilities of memory and time in such a totalitarian landscape…and what the costs might be when trying to unravel and weave them into freedoms. Expanding from that mythos, these stories fully explore what it’s like to live in such a totalitarian existence…and what it takes to get out of it. Building off the traditions of speculative writers such as Octavia Butler, Ted Chiang, Becky Chambers, and Nnedi Okorafor—and filled with the artistic genius and powerful themes that have made Monáe a worldwide icon in the first place—The Memory Librarian serves readers tales grounded in the human trials of identity expression, technology, and love, but also reaching through to the worlds of memory and time within, and the stakes and power that exists there. Thank you to partners @bibliolifestyle and @harpervoyagerus for this gifted copy. 🔖 #thememorylibrarian #janellemonae #janellemonáe #bibliolifestyle #igreads #bibliophile #bookphotography #booksofinstagram #bookishpost #bookishfeatures #booknerd #bookishflatlay #booklover #bookstagrammer #ilovebooks #bookblogger #booklove #bookgram #booksofig #becauseofreading #fortheloveofbooks #whattoread #readingismagic #booksbooksbooks #teacherswhoread #iteachhighschoolenglish #sistahscifi (at Sistah Scifi) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpfkhhML36W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤWuthering Heights
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤE M I L Y B R O N T E

💬 Mental health check-in today. How are you feeling? 🤎 I’m struggling a bit today. With everything going on in the world, plus my own personal stuff, I feel very heavy and weighed down. Suffocated. Overwhelmed and just outright sad. Today I will be sure to take some time to decompress and relax and not expect too much from myself. When you’re struggling, remember to always give yourself the same grace you give to others. 🤎 Thank you to @sourcebooksfire for gifting me this arc copy of Wild is the Witch by @timesnewrachel!

However, since I’m burried under a mountain of writing at the moment, they may end up being a Nightmare Before Christmas kind of reads. 🫣🤭 What are you reading over Halloween? #malicehouse #meganshepherd #bibliolifestyle #spookyreadsforhalloween #andrewjbrandt #pictureunavailable #horrorreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CkQ_1FfrL6d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It's a snowy night in NYC and it's the perfect weather for a gothic story. The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Choksi published 2/14 and would make a great choice for lovers of adult fairy tales, dark romance and gothic writing. Thanks to @williammorrowbooks and @bibliolifestyle for the gifted copy. QOTD: What booknis keeping you company tonight? 🌼 Synopsis 🌼 A sumptuous, gothic-infused story about a marriage that is unraveled by dark secrets, a friendship cursed to end in tragedy, and the danger of believing in fairy tales—the breathtaking adult debut from New York Times bestselling author Roshani Chokshi. Once upon a time, a man who believed in fairy tales married a beautiful, mysterious woman named Indigo Maxwell-Casteñada. He was a scholar of myths. She was heiress to a fortune. They exchanged gifts and stories and believed they would live happily ever after—and in exchange for her love, Indigo extracted a promise: that her bridegroom would never pry into her past. But when Indigo learns that her estranged aunt is dying and the couple is forced to return to her childhood home, the House of Dreams, the bridegroom will soon find himself unable to resist. For within the crumbling manor’s extravagant rooms and musty halls, there lurks the shadow of another girl: Azure, Indigo’s dearest childhood friend who suddenly disappeared. As the house slowly reveals his wife’s secrets, the bridegroom will be forced to choose between reality and fantasy, even if doing so threatens to destroy their marriage . . . or their lives. Combining the lush, haunting atmosphere of Mexican Gothic with the dreamy enchantment of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, The Last Tale of the Flower Bride is a spellbinding and darkly romantic page-turner about love and lies, secrets and betrayal, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive. #TheLastTaleoftheFlowerBride #tbr #RoshaniChokshi #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #igreads #reading #bookphotos #bookrecommendation #20booksbyasianwomen #bookish #books #bookworm #bibliolifestyle #AsianAuthors #darkromance #read #gothic #literature #fiction #fairytale https://www.instagram.com/p/CpMaOAOAu9D/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
