Outpost - Movie Review
TL;DR – There is an interesting story here, but the strong-handed visuals overwhelm the narrative and don’t give it any space to land. ⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 2.5 out of 5. Outpost Review – There are many ways that you can intrigue me to watch your film. It could be the premise, the director, the actor, or a scenario that just asks you to watch it. Today’s film had the latter when I was asked if I wanted…

In December, 2020, in the depths of pandemic winter, the actress Kimiko Glenn got a foreign-royalty statement in the mail from the screen actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA. Glenn is best known for playing the motormouthed, idealistic inmate Brook Soso on the women’s-prison series “Orange Is the New Black,” which ran from 2013 to 2019, on Netflix. The orchid-pink paper listed episodes of the show that she’d appeared on (“A Whole Other Hole,” “Trust No Bitch”) alongside tiny amounts of income (four cents, two cents) culled from overseas levies—a thin slice of pie from the show that had thrust her to prominence. “I was, like, Oh, my God, it’s just so sad,” Glenn recalled. With many television and movie sets shuttered, she was supporting herself with voice-over jobs, and she’d been messing around with TikTok. She posted a video in which she scans the statement—“I’m about to be so riiich!”—then reaches the grand total of $27.30 and shrieks, “WHAT?”
The post got more than four hundred thousand likes and nearly two thousand comments, many from disbelieving fans: “Wait how is that even legal??” “how is this even real you were on one of the biggest netflix shows.” This past May, with screenwriters on strike and labor unrest sweeping Hollywood, Glenn reposted the video on Instagram, where she has almost a million followers. This time, not only fans but castmates weighed in. Matt McGorry, who played a corrections officer: “Exaccctttlllyyy. I kept my day job the entire time I was on the show because it paid better than the mega-hit TV show we were on.” Beth Dover, who played a manager at the company taking over the prison: “It actually COST me money to be in season 3 and 4 since I was cast local hire and had to fly myself out, etc. But I was so excited for the opportunity to be on a show I loved so I took the hit. Its maddening.”
Television actors have traditionally had a base of income from residuals, which come from reruns and other forms of reuse of the shows in which they’ve appeared. At the highest end, residuals can yield a fortune; reportedly, the cast of “Friends” has each made tens of millions of dollars from syndication. But streaming has scrambled that model, endangering the ability of working actors to make a living. “So many of my friends who have nearly a million followers, who are doing billion-dollar franchises, don’t know how to make rent.”
Despite the Beatlemania-like fame, many cast members had to keep their day jobs for multiple seasons. They were waiting tables, bartending. DeLaria continued doing live gigs to keep up with her rent. Diane Guerrero, who played the fashionable inmate Maritza Ramos, worked at a bar, where patrons would recognize her.
These are just some highlights, but the entire article is worth a read, especially if someone you know is (or you are) so deep into watching celebrity culture that you’re having a hard time understanding why actors could possibly want more than they’re getting now.

Jane Lynch Returns to ‘The Bystanders’ Podcast for Season 2 Alongside Darren Criss, Margaret Cho (Exclusive)
Jane Lynch is set to return as the narrator for Season 2 of the dark comedy podcast “The Bystanders,” TheWrap can reveal exclusively. This new installment will be available exclusively on Apple Podcasts beginning June 22.
TheWrap also has the first audio clip for this upcoming second season, which can be viewed above.
Created by Ash Lendzion and Jaclyn Hales, “The Bystanders” is a fiction podcast that explores the dynamics of the bystander effect, a phenomena where the presence of others may discourage someone from involving themselves in an emergency situation. Similar to the Kitty Genovese story, Season 1 followed a group of neighbors who witness a brutal murder in the courtyard of their apartment complex and who seemingly do nothing to prevent it. In Season 2, the stakes have been raised. According to a press release, it revolves around “a group of flawed characters who, having witnessed a tragic incident as bystanders, find themselves kidnapped and held captive by a deranged individual. Amidst their harrowing ordeal, they are forced to rediscover the essence of true friendship, all while playing by their captor’s twisted rules.” This new season will be six episodes long. In addition to Lynch, this new season’s voice cast includes Darren Criss, Margaret Cho and Kathleen Turner. Also in the ensemble are Beth Dover (“Orange Is the New Black”), Joe Lo Truglio (“Paul”), Jon Gries (“Napoleon Dynamite”), Luke Cook (“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”), Monte Markham (“We Are Still Here”) and Wayne Knight (“Jurassic Park”). “The Bystanders” was written by Hales, Lendzion, Morris and Nick Blair Wilfong, who also serve as executive producers alongside Marilee Stafford. Black Label Media produces.

“Outpost” (2023): A Mountain of Mayhem
Tumblr media
Outpost: In the wake of a violent attack, a woman searches for strength in the solitude of a forest fire lookout tower job. Soon she is systematically and diabolically overwhelmed by something darker. https://youtu.be/CzgKAy8G2vs “Outpost” (2023): A Mountain of Mayhem New Release Film Review by John Smistad Close to Home for this Guy My dad and mom bought a cabin on Priest Lake in northern Idaho when I was a child. It has been a refuge of solace, relaxation, and contentment for decades now. A treasured touchstone to which extended family and dear friends return every summer to be together once again in this place we all so appreciate and adore. Now enter the new dramatic horror flick “Outpost”. I can hear the chorus: “What the hell, dude?!” Stay with me, friends. This intense introspection of an emotionally broken woman’s delirious descension into hallucination-generating PTSD is filmed almost entirely at Priest Lake. I know. I couldn't believe it either! Now, granted, I was predisposed to like “Outpost”, right? I mean considering its sentimental locale and the fact that several of the scenes here are shot in spots I’ve personally been to on too many occasions to even quantify, really how could I not? But, the fact is, this is a helluva ride based solely upon its own damn deservingness. Husband & Wife Duo Deliver First-time feature film director Joe Lo Truglio (Charles Boyle of TV’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) delivers a surefooted and scary-as-shit story here of Kate, a severely damaged woman both mentally and physically. This is a stunning performance-incendiary and primal from Truglio's wife, veteran actress Beth Dover (Linda Ferguson from Netflix’s mega-popular series “Orange Is the New Black”). An Explosive Ending Kate has endured a lifetime of shocking and sickening abuse since she was a girl. She determines that a job working alone in a mountaintop tower as a forest fire spotter is just what she needs to set herself straight. Kate is wrong. Dead wrong. Soon, an eruptive psychotic detonation screams a vicious and gruesome message of unleashed rage and retribution to all she comes in contact with on that secluded summit. Enough.
