Many people say they don't like how the fandom treats Inej, but honestly, when I look at other fandoms, I feel like the SOC-fandom SPOILED me in regards of how female characters are treated. I love how we encourage her for setting boundaries instead of tearing her down for being "mean" to Kaz (I know people do that, but the majority still supports her). She isn't seen as "bitchy" or "difficult", she's seen as a great, nuanced character who has flaws and strengths and who sets boundaries.
I got into netflix' "Good Girls" recently. I got into the series because I loved the friendship between the three women, because I thought it was great that there's a gangster TV-show that focuses on women and not on men, because they gave the three of them such different personalities, because it was such a beautiful display of female friendship and girls supporting girls, because these women were criminals and still had a very strong moral code and principles, etc. I loved Rio too and I looked forward to his scenes, but I mainly watched the show for Beth, Annie and Ruby.
As with any hyper fixation, I looked up youtube clips of the show to hopefully find like minded people, and what comments do I find?
"This show would be NOTHING without Rio"
"People ONLY watch this show for Rio, the three women were annoying"
"Beth looks too old for Rio"
Rio this, Rio that, etc etc etc. And I can guarantee you that this wouldn't be the case if Annie, Beth and Ruby were men. People would get into their characters, they would appreciate and embrace all of their flaws, but with the women, these flaws are "annoying".
I've been in the SOC fandom for so long that I kind of assumed every fandom was like it. Like we all love Kaz Brekker and I do think he's a fan favorite, but that doesn't mean people love and respect the other characters ANY less. There's so much beautiful analysis of each character. Nina and Inej aren't just seen as accessoires to their partners. People don't say sht like "This book would suck without Kaz". Every character is acknlwledged as important and silly and funny etc etc etc.
I'm just so tired of how awfully female characters are treated and it's why I'm so hesitant to join other fandoms.

cross my heart, hope to die.

"The words come out quietly and quickly, like she didn’t really want to say the words. And maybe it’s because she feels weird sharing what’s on her mind. Maybe her lungs weren’t prepared for the force of conviction that comes when you believe what you’re saying. Maybe she was so out of practice that her mouth wasn’t used to how the truth felt on her lips."

Or, 3 times Beth lies and the 1 time she can't lie to Rio. Set post-S3.

Can you explain to me the scene in 2x10 when Annie and Ruby are talking about the “emotional affair” between Rio and Beth? Because I’m still confused on it
From my understanding of that scene, it’s not actually beth and rio’s relationship they’re talking about, it’s their own with Beth.
Both girls are meeting up with Rio discussing doing a job without Beth, without even telling her, which is a lot when you look back and see Beth kinda controls their relationship with the crime world. (beth asks rio for another job, beth steals rios business and forms a partnership etc.)
They both also know that it isn’t just business between beth and rio, it’s also personal because they’ve slept together and well, they have eyes (brio are loud).
So what Ruby means by claiming it’s an affair when they’re meeting with Rio without informing Beth, is that it feels wrong and she should be included but they can’t tell her because she’s ‘quit’.
Plus Ruby is still feeling the heat/guilt from nearly betraying Beth, so she feels the need to tell her about the meeting even more.

what do you think are gg's biggest flaws?
Ooh, Anon! It’s like you’re in my head.
I’m busy making a video (that will probably never see the light of day) about this --  my distance from the show has really helped with some super objective clarity -- so I’ll use my notes from that to help me answer.
I’ll preface this by saying what I was most shocked by after putting down all the points was that Rio isn’t even mentioned until really far down??
Anyway, let's get into it.
These are Good Girls' greatest flaws in my opinion (and relative to season 1 -- while I think it had its flaws too, the list is far smaller and I think that's a separate post)
1. It didn't stick to its guns
What set this show apart from others in the 'Everyday person does crime (poorly)' genre was its comedic lightness, strong friendship element, relatability and emphasis on girl power.
a) By season 2, the lightness was already slowly disappearing to make way for season 3's darkness. (Quite literally; this show said sunlight scenes for WHO.) It also stopped being as fun. Remember how it genuinely used to be fun? I mean let's not forget The Best Scene Ever where Ruby shoots Big Mike by accident and we all laughed our asses off. (Compare and contrast to a similar-in-tone-and-context scene -- or even the whole episode -- like Boomer popping up behind them as Rio's package in season 3.) I think season 3 had some great lines and laughs, but in general, the fun element was completely missing for me.
b) As was the friendship. We already know Annie and Ruby basically became Beth's backup dancers in season 2, but at least then they still seemed to have some type of agency. In season 3, they rarely question Beth's (truly questionable) decisions, don't talk to her about shit like why she's still with her horrible husband and have very few true friendship moments as they did in season 1.
c) Which made it less relatable, but what also contributed was the major plot holes (it's less easy to relate when you're constantly having to remind yourself to suspend your disbelief). And, to be honest, their stupid actions. Just the most common-sense things weren't followed, like not taking your children to a crack den or not putting a hit out on a gang leader. It's frustrating watching a TV show -- where characters are supposed to learn things, have arcs and improve over time -- and feeling like you have more logical sense than all the main characters in every scene. (WHO would think a hitman was going to use a sniper rifle on people in broad daylight on the side of the road???)
d) You don't have to look any further than the title or the stans who shout "THE SHOW IS ABOUT THE GIRLS" -- or, hell, the first 10 seconds of the show where Sara is literally talking about the glass ceiling -- to know that the main characters being women is very important to the show. If not formally feminist, it was at least supposed to be empowering or feel like "girl power" (a term I hate, but we won't get into that now).
And I think it did it pretty well in season 1 -- it actually played on my favourite theme of the show, which is the world's perception of these women being what ultimately allows them to get away with so much. (Rife with opportunities for commentary about white privilege, but also a genius way to upend patriarchal beliefs.) But more and more it seemed like the show was asking you to accept empowerment as simply "these things are being done by women, yay".
And, well.
Tumblr media
2. Its marketing
I'll keep this one short because I think we all know how messed up this situation is. Basically they're selling a show (every week!) that they're not making while ignoring all feedback on every social media platform. Which brings us to...
3. The marriage of Death
If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times -- Beth's character development starts with getting rid of Dean. Her growth is stunted by him on multiple fronts and it's frustrating to viewers since she's constantly put forth as the main character. Not to mention how the audience, separately from Beth, was originally conditioned to see Dean as the scum of the earth (think of scenes like him crashing his car because he was perving on a woman jogging) so keeping them together is really... a choice. To actively root for this marriage (which seems like what the show wants, at least for the protracted moment) means either thinking Dean is a great person (which, as I said, we've only seen the opposite of) or believing he's all Beth deserves. Which leads me to...
4. Beth's (socio)path(y)
Is sociopath a 'good' word? Probably not. Have I seen dozens upon dozens of posts talking about whether Beth is one? Yes. And I see it from a huge variety of people -- from viewers who just binged the show last weekend to those who've been watching for years, the question keeps coming up. And I entirely blame the writing of the show that, by the way, I don't believe is deliberately creating Beth to get this reaction. I think she's written (and, to an extent, acted) in a way that is much too aloof and I'm not convinced it's meant to come off as cold and unfeeling as it does. Everything else leads me to believe that the audience is supposed to root for Beth, but it's just so difficult.
Beth does a lot of messed up shit that requires dialogue to sympathise with her and the inner workings of her mind, but in the later seasons Beth rarely gets to express herself verbally. And every time she does get to speak about her emotions, the dialogue is a pick-your-own-adventure between "She's in so much denial", "This person feels no emotions" and "I'll go find an analysis/fic later to explain this" (scenes like "Nothing" or "I was just bored"). Compare and contrast with some of the great scenes in season 1 where she emotes, like her paralysing shock after they first rob the store or admitting she enjoys crime, or (one of my favourites!) the one in the park where she's mimicking the other mothers beside her.
5. Brio
I said in the beginning that I was shocked Rio doesn't get mentioned until this point and that's because I've always felt like he was an integral part of the show. When people say the show is about the girls, they're truncating -- the show is about the girls getting into crime. That crime is represented by Rio over and over again -- they never bring in another criminal at his level (which is another one of its flaws, but that's also a different post); Rio is it.
And though I stand by Rio's importance, the truth is that Brio isn't as essential to the show, by which I mean that if all of the above were done well, it wouldn't be as sorely missed. In lieu of riveting plot, a fun friendship, character development and empowerment, most viewers have glommed onto Brio like a lifeboat (or ship, heh).
Unfortunately it's also what the show has most stubbornly refused to develop significantly.
It's honestly a toss-up for why I feel Brio is a flaw: is the flaw that they got together? That they never got together well enough? That the writing keeps bringing in these 'chemistry-filled' scenes that are ultimately filled with air?
I don't know. Maybe all of them; maybe just one, depending on the day.
6. Its criticism falls flat without intersectionality
This is a big one because Good Girls is *trying* to do something very clever. As mentioned previously, my favourite theme of the show is how the women's apparent innocence/vulnerability in the eyes of society is their biggest strength. The show plays with this and other interesting themes with varying levels of success, but ultimately they all fall a little flat when they don't feel intersectional.
When Ruby gets sidelined. When Turner, who sees and all but calls out by name Beth's privilege, is portrayed as the villain. When Rio is told he's gonna "pop a cap" in his young child's "ass". When the racist grandma becomes a sympathetic character whom we must later grieve. (And she really didn't have to be racist, now that I think about it? It was just that one line for laughs and that was it.) When, despite the real-world implications, Dean can loudly announce in a store that he's buying a gun to kill someone with and the show just glides past it. When Ruby has to grovel for forgiveness from Beth for trying to protect her husband and family from the system, with no acknowledgement from Beth about how their realities are different. When Rhea gets booted off the show as soon as she's done serving Beth's plot. When Rio gets treated like a prostitute for absolutely no reason. (Oh, and is accused of raping Beth and is literally spoken of as an animal and starts only existing in zero dim lighting as a one-dimensional stereotype... the list goes on.)
7. PR/The actors
I'll risk my life here to sprinkle this in because I do think it's a massive problem. The Manny/Christina of it all is just the tip of the iceberg (although wtf Good Girls? There's nothing you could do to get these two into an interview together??). The main actors do the bare minimum to promote the show and it's weird. I also think it's the height of unprofessionalism to keep characters on the show against the wishes of the majority of the audience just because you enjoy their actors (Boomer confirmed; Dean highly suspected). While, on the flip side of the coin, limiting a character's screentime because you aren't best buddies with them. Having less and less Rio when he's such a fan favourite is dumb; as is not including him in any series marketing material. It feels personal and that isn't how a TV show should be run.
8. The entire hair and wardrobe department needs a stern talking-to

Pool Scene Analysis
Ah, yes. The already famous pool scene! I’ve rewatched it too, and I can only say that I still love it as much as I did on first watch – but I understand how people can have mixed feelings about it. Overall this episode is a lot about parallels, as we could see with flashbacks and the now of Beth and Dean. And the pool scene is part of a sets of parallels when I look at it: Two parallels: - Pool Scene vs past Beth/Rio scenes. [Most notably the bathroom Break in 2x04 – yes with pictures included, I’m not a monster] - Beth/Rio vs Beth/Fitzpatrick vs Beth/Dean (I was going to break it into those two parallels, but I decided to go chronologically, it makes more sense) Dean + Beth So, what happens just before? Dean just figuratively threw the door in Beth’s face, because he learned that he isn’t just in jail because of Beth. He now knows that Rio was a part of this scheme since the very beginning. From the past seasons we know that Dean doesn’t have that much of a problem with the whole crime aspect, he bribes the doctor himself when he fakes the cancer, hires the baby hitmen to off Rio, and handles the books at Boland Motors (Beth asks Dean where the books are, when Turner is about to raid them). Dean’s problem is not with crime, it’s with Rio. Beth + Rio / Pool Scene Beth drops by Rio at his (empty) bar, and tells him she needs a loan. Now, she’s never been shy to ask for money or time or jobs with Rio, but in a way most of those times were directly of indirectly beneficial to Rio in the end. There’s obviously times he refused, like when she wanted him to participate in the Botox scheme in 1x08 – because that was an instance where it once benefited her. And, like now, law enforcement is on them. And we know Rio ain’t doing any time because some bitches need their pocket money.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s the episode Ruby and Annie called Beth out for not NOT wanting to do crime – hell, how she’s crawling out of her skin living ‘the normal life’. In the same episode Rio tells her she’s not going to be any kind of boss until she gets her house in order, while both her business and her actual house in 4x03 are in shambles again. In 1x08 Ruby also learns that Eddie is talking to the feds, putting the girls up for an important decision: Who’s going to be the fall guy, Eddie or them? It’s not going to be them. Back to pool. Beth tells him it’s for bail, but Rio immediately nah’s her. She needs a fall guy if she ever wants to make money again. Which is what Rio did to Beth before 4x04, he left all the fake money in her name. Presumably so he could go and make a fresh start for himself. But when she prove her worth again he took it all away. Beth tells Rio that at ‘it’s not his fault’. But Rio reminds her that he told her to be smart:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which is what he told her when he send her to watch Lucy, someone else who got spiraled into crime due to Beth’s scheme. Another innocent who took a fall for her, albeit it not directly her doing. Dean’s arrest, by also not letting him in on the crime, but who she set up form the beginning by putting both the store and accounts on his name – is her doing. As much as she might not want to see that.
“Look they’ll cut a deal. Three years, club Fed.” Beth jumps on how it’ll affect her kids and her, but ignores the thing I’m latching on to: That Rio assumes Dean will cut a deal with the Secret Service. But that would mean Dean can offer them something in exchange for him to cut years of his sentence. And we already know that Dean knows nothing about how the business works – Phoebe knows by now that Dean knows nothing about how the business works, because she found Beth’s handwritten instructions herself – so the only substantial thing Dean has to offer is Beth. I’m not entirely sure Beth’s talking crime implications, or personal when she asks ‘What about me?’ but Rio is very keen to focus entirely on the marriage part. Telling her that ‘her boy’ will come out in better shape than when he went in. ‘Maybe she’ll even wanna hit that again’. Beth’s briefly looking at him with a look of ‘I can’t believe you brought that up’, but barrels forward with a ‘There’s gotta be a way to get him out’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This moment parallels with the first non-flashback scene we see, of Beth and Dean, that I talked about before. Dean’s issues with Beth’s crime life are with Rio. And Rio’s throwing it out there that can’t grasp why she has such an issue with Dean talking the fall. He might not know everything about their marriage, but he knows it’s broken enough for her to have sex with him, for her to get into crime and choosing to stay, and to even set him up and keep him in the dark for Boland Bubbles. Hell, the first time they fucked her husband was sitting three feet away waiting for the bill, and the second time was in her marital bed. But I’ll get back to that.
Rio throws back that if you ‘Do the crime, you do the time.’ To which this piece of convo follows:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 2x13 (and please lets not get into discourse how poorly this was built up) Rio made sure everything was on Beth, even oopsing the dead body buried under her lawn to Turner as a cherry on top of all the funny money and the dealership. Rio knows he needs a fall guy – and in 2x13 it was Beth – she could make it all go away if she murdered Turner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rio talks about how he got luck on his side. Surviving the shooting could be considered lucky, and the opportunity it gave him to wipe the streets from his competition gave him more space and opportunity to built something up after he organized the drive by on Turner. But he also say ‘Maybe you do to.’ Which could indicate their immediate game, but I’m thinking it might be more. I think this might be a reference to Rio’s mystery boss we have yet to meet. When you think about it, Turner took a lot of people down probably in the span of like two months, and Rio was AWOL for all that time – he’d be the first one people look at to be a snitch. Yet he remains unscathed for the whole of season three up ‘til now, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he had some wort of protection. And perhaps he’s offering Beth to be in on that too. Speaking of 2x04’s bathroom break, hello bail deal! We all know there some more ambiguity surrounding this scene, but all choreography of this scene seems so deliberately close to 2x04 I cannot unsee. Look:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beth seals the deal back in the bar, and Rio allows her to take it from his cut she still owes him. That is, obviously, not what she was looking for. But who’s surprised, really? In 1x08 he was shut down, not taking on new business and not continuing the running ones. He even stole all Beth’s money – she could have known that everybody still feels the pain.
Tumblr media
Once again Beth will have to solve things herself, but Rio can’t help but look at her as she storms out. Beth + Fitzpatrick I already touched on the 2x13 parallel from when Beth says that nothing ever sticks on Rio, but there’s more callback in this scene as well. Beth now has been turned down by Dean from even talking to her, and by Rio from help with money for bail. She’s kind of fed up at this point, and at the end of her rope. And now this infatuated dick who refuses to do the job she hired him fore is lounging in her kitchen like her owes the place – owes her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beth has a tendency to copy Rio when she really needs something, but also doesn’t really know how to get it – like when she and the girls went into the crack house to retrieve the Dubby. I can’t say I’m surprised she explodes her, changing her tactic to ‘giving him what he wants’. Like the crack house this could have ended horribly, but fortunately it works (well, for now, we don’t know yet how this is going to play out). But Beth’s visibly weighted by the choice she just made to handle this – even if it worked. So that’s folks! What do you guys think? Did you notice a parallel I missed?

I know been a lot blog about how Rio feel about Beth but how can you Describe how Beth feel about Rio ?
First of all: thank you for the ask because I rarely get any. Which I completely understand because I’m not around enough and I don’t really do much of analysis posts. PLUS I take forever to think about questions. Same with this one because it’s a loaded one.
I think we can all agree we’re not talking about the big love story here (fanfiction is a different matter though) but mutual attraction which neither Rio or Beth can explain.
If you would’ve asked me about what Rio feels for Beth right now it’s a combination of confused anger and sexual attraction he wish he could turn off so he can get rid off her. It’s been a year since season 3 was cut short but technically we’re still in season 3 and it’s post-Beth shot Rio, so Rio is still dealing with all of that AND Beth keeps piling up more and more rotten eggs in his front yard. So, I kind of understand he still pissed with her, getting shot 3 times and bleeding almost to death can do that. Especially when Beth comes around trying to flirt with him (with ulterior motifs) like she never shot him. They still need that talk you know. A lot of people (myself included) want them to have hate sex but I also want them to just like talk it out.
With Beth, she is much more complicated - at least to me because she rarely vocalizes her own emotional state, not to Annie or Ruby or to herself. It’s a lot of guessing with her. While Rio isn’t vocalizing his feelings either, he is easier to read because he doesn’t even pretend he isn’t pissed at her. Even when he is violating the personal space in 4x1 or in season 3, the underlying anger is THERE.
I think though in season 1, Rio was unexpected, just as unexpected it was for Beth to rob a grocery store with her sister and best friend. Then he is complimenting her and looking at her like he wants to snack on her right there in the car or bedroom or kitchen (the fact she doesn’t read Fitzpatrick’s weird flirting as serious is because it’s not coming close to how Rio made her feel). We can argue whether Rio did that to manipulate her or not but I think we can agree that he was and is into her either way.
Meanwhile Beth is in this marriage where her husband is sleeping with a woman who could be his niece. So to have someone like Rio show interest in her must make her feel powerful, as seen in season 2 when she lifts her dress for Rio in that dingy bathroom.
She said in 4x1 when Fitzpatrick asked her how someone like her ended up with someone like him that she was bored. And that’s the first time really she vocalizes anything in regards of Rio and I think she is truthful about it. That doesn’t mean she was never or isn’t anymore attracted to Rio. But I think the crimelife, the things someone like her wouldn’t usually do and she is doing them and then having someone like Rio make her feel excited and powerful, sexually and professionally (even though we can say she makes so many mistakes as well). And who wouldn’t love that?
Then we had 2x9, the bedroom scene which was filmed like we’re in a romance novel and I loved every second of it. And it was all initiated by Beth which reads to me she was in this with more than just “oh, I was bored and Rio made my life a little more exciting”. I never believe that Beth and Rio are made to be together together and they’re not endgame as in playing house but if the writers aren’t stupid they’re endgame as in keeping up the cat and mouse game with the occasional sex involved.
But of course then the whole kidnapping nonsense plot happened and Beth shot Rio 3 times and she thought he was gone. And it still doesn’t sit well with me to think about Beth smiling “he is gone now” and free to do whatever she likes. But I kind of understand Beth being terrified to learn Rio is very much alive, knowing what he usually does with someone who turns into a rotten egg.
So in season 3, I think what Beth feels is mostly being scared which lasts only a short while since she quickly comes to the conclusion she might still be able to work her charm on Rio AND then get him assassinated.
You see I haven’t rewatched season 3 once because it was so bad. But I’m mostly confused right now what Beth feels in regards of Rio. She keeps flirting with him, as seen in 4x1. She keeps playing him, as seen in 4x1. Which I love! But she also keeps that assassin thingy going which is just so unnecessary and makes me think she doesn’t care a great deal about Rio.... or for his son.
But I just hope that this “plot” gets resolved quickly and we move on from that.
So my answer would be: Beth is feeling powerful with and because of Rio, in any way, and she can’t really lose that. Or she finds a way to feel that way without him. I don’t mind the “love/hate dynamic” but let’s not add the assassination plot to it because it seriously dampens the fun of those moments. And makes me doubt that the moment in 2x9 meant anything to the writers or Beth or Rio.

Do you think Beth ever had any dabbles in crime as a youngster or saw her parents commit crimes.. hence her head for it? Love your analysis.
Thank you! And ooo, what an interesting question, anon!
This is entirely speculation of course, but I’ve always thought Beth and Annie’s parents projected a sort of picture-perfect image externally, while having deeper-rooted problems internally. The show’s touched on this quite a few times now, particularly in season 2 – “you get what you get and you don’t get upset”, the flashback of Beth and Annie stealing their mother’s car to go grocery shopping in 2.08, Ruby and Annie’s fight in 2.10 where Ruby said Beth had no choice but to marry Dean – and briefly in season 3 too – namely through Annie telling Ben that Beth raised her.
In that sense, I’m not sure if I can see Beth and Annie’s parents being involved in crime – particularly given how loaded the you get what you get quote is; it seems like she might’ve been a woman resigned to whatever hand she got dealt. That said, I could definitely see some of Beth’s natural skills as being observed from her parents? I kind of love the thought that Beth maybe inherited lying and bullshitting from her mother, and learning how to project one image while secretly possessing another.
Similarly, I’m not sure if I can see a young Beth leaping into crime, haha, but I think she was willing to bend the rules when she had to. We saw that really in the flashback in 2.08 with taking her mum’s car even though she couldn’t drive, and I could see her similarly maybe using the five-finger discount when she had to and being able to explain away any thrill she got from it as relief in the moment.
I don’t know though, haha. What do you guys think?

(Previously, on GG rewatch...)
So I was going to say that this end of season is really getting boring to rewatch, but then I remembered that this is the episode where we meet my baby Fitzie so I’m good actually!
Oh right, I forgot about this I feel pretty montage!! They are totally going to hook up in season 4 #Phoebeth2021 #makeithappen
LITERAL. PEACOCKS. Look at this point I -- I don't even know what to say. Oh bang it out already, you two!
I’m not sure I really understand how and when the girls finally managed to gather the 60 grands now the “price of ink” went back down, but you know, t this point I don’t even know why I still care about realistic details in this show...
Season 4 wishlist: can we get one scene (ONE!!!!) where Phoebe isn't gross?? I don't know if the show is trying to make a very caricatural "I'm a lesbian, I don't care about looking cute and feminine" point or if it's something else, but it really bugs me.
Also, how did Phoebe figure out the exact shade of nail-polish to call back? The chemical analysis identified the main nail-polish ingredients, but on such small quantities I doubt they could formally identiy the exact manufacturer/line/ colour...
"And he's not 'ma boi'" Sure, Bethie, sure...
"Go pee before school"????? Isn't that the lamest excuse ever to have a private talk with your wife???
Unpopular opinion: I hate Annie's hair clipper. I find it ugly and infantilizing and my babe doesn't need that.
You guys have wine nights where your roast your tutor on her sex life or it's just Annie?
Beth wearing sunglasses inside always cracks me up. Also the armless man's entrance is just such a GOLDEN moment!!!
"Mrs Bolaaaaaaaand"
So Max hoooked his cousin up with the hit plan but somehow the information about the guy having lost his both arms got lost in the mail??? Look, I understand the comedic purpose but people on this show have a fucking weird sense of communication. All. Of. Them.
"He's who you want" "Who is he?" "I have no idea. He's that good" This dialogue sounds like it's been written under acid and I'm loving it
I don't understand why is Gayle so surprised that nobody reacts, the Crystal Whale of South-Eastern Michigan sounds like a pretty lame prize.
Yes, Dean, this is actually how corporate awards work. Now whether it's fair or not is a whole other discussion, but I don't see the point of lecturing Gayle about it. Also I love that he doesn't care anymore about how his coworkers "bust their ass off and never see their kids" the second Gayle tells him that the award is for him... What an asshole, seriously
"We're compatible" Peak romance, honestly. Annie, you don't want a guy like that. Ugh.
Is it me or these therapy session are now entirely revolving around Annie and Josh's personal relationship(s)? Also "how has that gone for you?" is just mean and unprofessional.
Dean's tiny pillow!!!!!
Ugh, for fuck's sake, Dean, STOP OBSESSING OVER THIS UGLY DRESS!!!!
Sushi slaughter!!
THIS. RELATIONSHIP. OF. OURS.
LOOK AT THIS LUNATIC ASKING HER TO SHOOT HIM A SECOND TIME!!!!!!!! MURDER IS THEIR LOVE LANGUAGE!
Also I'm dying at Mick and Rio's giggles of connivance. They're 12-year-olds. The three of them.
Honestly I don't get why Beth doesn't save 60 grand and does the job herself since she supposedly wants his dead anyway...
I really do believe that the only reason Rio ordered sushis was so he could dramatically pick the gun with his chopstick. The fancy Japanese restaurant story is probably a myth that him and Fitzpatrick invented as a private joke, this is totally a clue that Rio knows about the hit!!! #conspiracy
I know that it's not at all the purpose of this barefoot scene, but all I can see is that Christina has bunions and it must hurt.
Ruby looks so good in purple!!
Sara's line about the protractor is objectively hilarious
Ugh, the Ruby and Sara scene in the car is a masterpiece of acting. And I just love the complexity of Sara's character that's literally unfolding and growing this season!!
Wait, Ruby pinned the salon theft on the undeserved?? There are actual people who'll get in trouble for that?
"Boobs" is an extremely valid list for a 16 y/o boy though...
I love that Eric is just wandering around in an empty house and doesn't ask any question
I don't know what's funnier, Eric's beaver-inspired pick-up line, or Dean's reaction to a gay man hitting on his wife, but this moment just cracks me up every time.
I'm totally losing it at how seriousy Dean goes "it's the crystal whale" as if it were an actual thing
FITZPATRICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So this man is drinking ~tea~ while making dubious allusions to getting in bed with people and is a food neat freak... Is that a Beth x Fitz potential hookup foreshadow???
Love the little callback to the eggs B!
Also, Fitz must think that Beth's a total lunatic who dressed up for signing a murder contract!
EVERYTHING about Andrew McCarthy's acting just kills me. This scene is so good!!! And I love that he starts saying that he needs time for prep work before scheduling a date literally on the next week!!
This whale tail that glows in the dark is objectively ridiculous...
The fact that Gayle will kiss the first man who tells her that she's not a monster says a lot about her self-esteem tbh...
WHY DOES DEAN GET TO KISS EVERYONE THIS SEASON???
Annie adding Cirque du Soleil details about her imaginary hook-up with Greg is just so fun, elaborated lying skills!!!
Phoebe's coworker is objectively rude but I kinda like their constant bickering
You ever come home from groceries shopping babbling around to your partner about truffle oil?? Gosh, Beth is really a weirdo sometimes.
"She kissed me." "I kissed her back" good thing they didn't have pancakes, huh?
As much as I love Sara's internal turmoil and guilt-induced decision to track down her donor's family, I can't help but cringe at the thought of this awkward dinner next episode...
BANG IT OUT ALREADY!!!! He called her champ!!!!!!! I love this darkness setting around them!!! But also. She smiles at him because she knows he'll be dead by Friday. WHY IS SHE DOING THIS TO ME??????
Bonus: Never not laughing at Dean’s ridiculously small pillow vs. Beth’s ginormous one...

the lovely @inyoursheets tagged me for this GG game!!
When did you start watching Good Girls?
Exactly a year ago! I think my first google search was “rio good girls” and “good girls season 3″
Why did you start watching Good Girls?
I saw the trailer many times before and it looked...pretty bad every time. And then I was so bored one night and I was like ‘fuck it maybe it’ll be trash but I need to watch something’ and then I realized how FAR that was from the truth and have been hyperfixating ever since :)
Who is your favorite character?
Tumblr media
this guy. no not rio. the other guy.
What's your favorite ship?
brio! sorry to stuby but their relationship is too realistic and pure for me
Who is your favorite secondary character?
Rio (lmao yes im still salty about rio getting less than 5 minutes per episode)
If you could give Beth one background detail what would it be?
she used to shoplift tiny things as a child, just like the chapstick in s2, and thought was just a childish habit she would grow out of lol
If you could give Annie one background detail what would it be?
She always had more guy friends than friends who were girls
If you could give Ruby one background detail what would it be?
Ruby always claims that Stan had to chase after her and that she was out of his league, but deep down she knows she was as smitten with him as he was with her
What's your favorite crime related moment or storyline?
OKOK taking a page out of jo’s book, my favorite was a hugely under appreciated, crime-adjacent moment: 2.06 at 23:50 when rio confronts beth about stealing the pills
“I trusted you.” / “it’s your fault” the dialogue that gave us a small but of communication and unguarded emotion between these two.
“you think you’re special huh”/ “you need me”  omg ok a y
the way beth is so unafraid of rio with his gun. the way the gun wasn’t there to actually be used but because rio had to play the part.
and the best part--when dean walks in on them. how do I describe what beth slipping back into the mother/wife role that rio knows is fake in front of rio, did to me? or when rio visibly switches back into a civil version of himself and puts the gun away? or most of all, when he says “Yeah” and walks away like he’s knows exactly who she is and they’re more similar than she thinks? basically I have a lot of Thoughts and this entire scene has my heart
What's your favorite personal moment or storyline?
CORVETTE SCENE!
I've rewatched this scene over and over again at so many random hours in the night and every time, that scene just hits. I remember biting my hand and screaming into my pillow when the credits rolled the first time, and the immediately jumping to Tumblr to read meta analysis on the scene with a stupid grin on my face. and then I rewatched the scene again. and again.
FMK: amber diane rhea
fuck diane
marry rhea
kill amber
Bonus: Add 3 characters in the hashtags for your tagged friends to play fuck, marry, kill! (or snog, marry, avoid!)
im tagging @medievalraven @foxmagpie @bourbon-ontherocks @sdktrs12 @entwinedloop  @nickmillerscaulk @sothischickshe @bethsuglywigs @wiatchh @mamey2422

Good Morning Dudes and Dudettes!
I was going to make a long post about my reaction and review of 3x05. It was also going to include how Dean having no accountability for his actions is a dangerous message for the writers to send. It was going to be a whole rant that I called an “analysis” because (as most of you know) he pisses me off.
However, I’ve been transitioning to work from home and it has been an absolute nightmare! Like just the worst experience of my life.
So what I will say is that I didn’t like this episode becuase normally when the stakes are high there’s still that underlying element of comedy that makes it fun. (Think the episode were they tried to get the pen cap from the van) This episode they were just straight up terrified. It was no longer fun to watch. Ben has been really mean to Annie (but I guess he’s a teenager so that’s not too far fetched). Ruby is justifiably afraid her marriage is going to crumble. And Beth knew what was going to happen to Lucy because Dean decided to be an idiot.
I love this show but this episode was really heavy and (to me) there wasn’t enough light to balance it out. I know that may be the point of a “darker” season but idk if I’m here for it.

beth or rio?👀
Ok I love this from your...url? Name? Whatever the proper nomenclature is
But um no strongly disagree
They both suck, and I hate them. The show would be a lot more enjoyable if they were both written off.
The correct answer is Ruby, stan, Ben, Amber, Annie individually or together, with a side of jt, mick and hipster hatted barman
(sidenote: this prompted me to do some statistical analysis, and I have written more beth pov than rio pov! But I still feel comfortable saying I hate them both equally)
Although also... If you give me a FOR WHAT scenario I can maybe say which of them would be more useful in it (though the answer is likely neither)

Ok overall thoughts for the episode. I loved it overall! I think this is the first time in the entire season where so much of the comedy hit the right note for me. I cackled out loud so many times more times in this episode than I have in the entire season! It had a bit of a season 1 feel to it.
I also feel so genuinely excited about the Stan and Krystal arc we have coming and Stan's reckoning of the crimes Ruby has been committing this entire time. I love that he'll be exploring this separate from Ruby.
I'm now genuinely excited for Annie too and am excited to see what happens with her pursuit of a career as an EMT!
And JT. Listen, he's my favourite side character EVER and I would like him to be included in the poster for season 4, as the fourth good girl.
I actually enjoyed Dean's scenes and Matthew Lillard's performance. I have to admit that I still have 0 interest in the situation with Gayle. I just don't. Something isn't landing for me and I might talk about it more in the episode analysis.
I dislike that Beth ended up hiring a hitman to kill Rio but I really, really loved her scenes with Max and think it was a hilarious ride. I loved the scene in the car where she spoke about feeling "nothing" after killing Rio and how it wasn't a nice feeling. I don't think we can ignore the significance of all this, given that she obviously feels like she can't kill Rio herself again, even though she would have to deal with the guilt, and now that he's back she's probably feeling a lot more than "nothing". (I understand that this probably hurt a lot of people but gosh, Beth and Rio have been through a rough ride and it's probably gonna be this way for a while. Beth making stupid decisions? Yeah. Scared and desperate? Yeah.)
ALSO THAT PROMO I'M DEAD AHDBJABDKEBFBEJ

Random Thoughts on Beth, Rio, and Dean
I agree with a lot of people’s analysis that this episode was about Beth. In fact, I think the whole series is mainly about Beth (sure it’s about Ruby and Annie too), but Beth is the one with the most growing and changing to do.
We got to see her have many realizations in this episode about her husband and what she wants from her life.
First, she realizes Dean is hella incompetent. I mean, she already knew, but I don’t think she knew to this level. Dude bro can’t even sell a car.
Secondly, she realizes Dean thinks she’s dumb. He was dismissive and didn’t truly consider any of her ideas. And unlike the botched Botox situation Dean couldn’t offer her any reasons why her ideas for the dealership were bad other than y’know for her to stay in her lane. Yeah, Rio was laughing on the inside at her lame-o attempt to hustle some Botox but at least he took the time to spell out why it was a bad idea. #ConstructiveCriticism
Thirdly, I think she realized that Rio can give her what she wants/needs. Although I don’t think she entirely knows what that is. Does she want sex? money? understanding? Right now, Rio is kind of providing all three. She went from “relying” on her husband to relying for real on Rio.
I don’t think Beth ever intended to leave Dean. At least not with her kids so young. That’s why she paid the dumb assistant to leave town. Divorce talk or no, she has yet to see a lawyer. And do you tell a guy you’re going to divorce all about your criminal deeds? I don’t think so.
Even though I’ve really come to dislike Dean (and honestly would like to see him join his brother from another mother in the landfill), I can respect Beth’s choice to stay with him.
Because you see, Beth puts her kids first. She’s willing to sacrifice her own happiness to see that her kids have a stable/somewhat normal life.
Even though she’s discovering all these things about herself, she’s still a mom, first and foremost. Her kids’ wellbeing is always on her mind. And she’ll stay with lame-o Dean if that’s what she thinks is best for her kids.
That last scene at the dealership wasn’t Beth worrying about wrecking her marriage (that’s already dead). It was about her worrying about her family being ruined. I don’t think she’d give a flying fig about Dean knowing about her and Rio other than the fact that he’d probably leave her and try to take the kids with him or she’s worried that her husband being out of the picture would be the tipping point for her already troubled eldest son.
I do think we’re going to see guilty Beth because she’s worried she’s going to mess up her kids’ lives. She wants to be “a good person” and in that bathroom? She wasn’t being so good was she? LOL.
I said that Beth goes to Rio for all her needs. I’m gonna make a correction. She doesn’t go to him for emotional support...yet. I think that’s a transition we’re going to see this season. There wasn’t kissing in the hook up for a reason. That was about sex. That wasn’t about emotion.
I think Beth was trying to connect/reconnect emotionally with Dean this episode, but quickly realized that beyond their children there really was no emotional tie between them. They don’t truly know each other and they’re not even friends.
Not gonna lie, I felt a little bad for Rio this episode. I know Beth earned some much needed selfishness, but I think it left Rio feeling a bit used. I don’t think he likes being someone’s secret.
Correction: He HATES being someone’s dirty little secret. For evidence: check the crazy gleam in his eyes during that car smashing scene.
Are Rio and Beth gonna keep smooshing booties? Most definitely. Is Deansie going to still be in the picture? Yeppers. Is that going to be the cause of all the Beth x Rio tension for the rest of the season? Yes sir.
I’m here for all that angsty mess. Bring it, Good Girls.

I think Rio comes from a family of crime- it’s not just his game but something he inherited (or killed someone for?) from the people who raised him. It means he was raised with money and therefore certain tastes (backsplash and all our fav domestic!rio moments) and raised with power and he knows the game and plays it well, but when it comes to this thing with Beth… He’s never really known what’s outside of his life. (1/2)
To him, it kinda just seems like common sense. Maybe hey, don’t go into the sketchy house with the bloody mattress. Or hey, maybe don’t bring a million moms into a sketchy fake cover for laundering. He said he would teach her but he didn’t realize that meant all of this shit he was just raised to know. He so obviously cares about her, and he’s so obviously not sure what to do about her and I think that it’s much the same for her. (2/2)”
Loved this in-depth analysis, anon. (WHO IS YOU!? YES!) I feel like right now the fandom is really going through some genuine discourse in concern to Beth, her choices, how she executes those choices, and what she honestly wants. Like I said on my thoughts about last night, and as you have alluded to, Beth has ZERO experience in this whole world, but Rio does. He is streetwise, and we don’t know his full background, but he has enough sense not to fuck around in this world, “You got to jail or you die!”
But like @pynkhues and @asillydreamer-on-a-crazyworld have said , these characters are flawed, its a show, and just like we cater to and understand Rio’s background in the crime world, we, as the active audience, must be always be aware of the Ot3′s naivety, ignorance, and privilege as well. I think this goes hand in hand with Beth’s arrogance in handling this world, and luckily, she has Rio who is like “MAYBE NOT GO IN THE SKETCHY ASS DRUG HOUSE FOR A BLANKIE”
Here is the thing: and I cannot stress this ENOUGH, is that these characters have thrusted themselves into the crime world, and their suburban backgrounds have come in handy in certain situations but it also disadvantages them because they are still in unknown territory where there is different rules, behaviors, attitudes and etiquette. Rio knows this. Beth, Annie, and Ruby do not and this show has and is about showing these clashes of their relationships (mother-daughter, husband-wife, sister-sister, society-individual, etc). This latest episode was showcasing that. Beth was struggling with work, and her relationship with her children, especially Jane (and in past episodes with Kenny!)
This show is very multifaceted and really calls attention to various nuances that, despite all this drama, is something that is rooted in core values raised in this society and forced upon women. (I hope I am making sense lol). Beth isn’t perfect. No one is. She is smart, but not the smartest on the block. She is still learning how to be street smart. She has had amazing moments in being BOSS BITCH, but her ass still has a long way to go. For me, as someone who has to navigate these very spaces of the ‘ghetto’ and the ‘burbs’, I have a certain patience with the OT3, specifically Beth and I think thats why I feel Rio in tolerating her ass lmao
But yeah anon. You made great, and key, points to the behavior of Beth and Rio’s background, I just hope everyone doesn’t lose out hope for Boss Bitch Beth because my lil suburban crime ma still growin’
