Claude Garamond was a famous French type designer, type founder, punch cutter and publisher. He was born in the year 1480 in Paris, France. Garamond's career as a French type designer, was known as one of the busiest periods for the typeface evolution having various selections of fonts. Some fonts were created exclusively for specific printers and others were being sold or traded. He was considered one of the best type cutters during his century.
He was authorized by King Francis I of France to create a new type for his own exclusive use, which was discovered today known as “Grecs du Roi” a greek typeface. In the year 1545, Garamond joined the publishing trade partnering with Jean Barbé, who was a Parisian bookseller. Garamond also worked as a publisher, with Pierre Gaultier, and the books were used Garamond’s typefaces. His first book, "Pia et Religiosa Meditatio" by David Chambellan, was published. Garamond’s Grec du Roi typeface was also used by Robert Estienne in three sizes exclusively for the printing of his Greek books. He was one of the early printers to establish the modern tradition that the italic capitals.
In the year 1530, Garamond’s first type was used in an edition of the book “Paraphrasis in Elegantiarum Libros Laurentii Vallae” by Erasmus. It was based on Aldus Manutius’ type De Aetna, cut in 1455. He was influenced by his handwriting as a model to his work, for typography to progress a language embed the process of making steel punches, casting metal type and printing, coping forms of creating hand gestures with inked quills on paper.
During 20th century, most leading foundries around the world have redrawn their own versions of Garamond's typeface, and Garamond's roman typeface is still being used today, considered as one of the classic typefaces.
In 1561 Garamond died in Paris, France, as he died during the poverty age, his wife/widow sold his punches and matrices. His fonts remained native in Paris, Garamond was an engraver and letter founder of high reputation. His roman typefaces were designed with perfection, the French printers during the 16th century had an opportunity of printing out extraordinary books. It was credited by sheer quality of his fonts, having a major role in abolishing gothic styles. Garamond was the first to create the earliest typefaces of Aldus Manutius, developing a typeface based on his last name “Garamond”. This roman type became a standard European type and existed until the 18th century.
