The Mason Jar in Benton Harbor, Michigan

So I actually had these a while ago, in May of 2018. I visited Benton Harbor with friends and we had brunch here. It was a super comfortable place, and I believe it also doubled as an art expo! It features fresh, local ingredients. I ordered the gluten-free banana oat pancake and the buttermilk pancakes with chocolate chips (I love choc chips! I will mostly only eat pancakes with them). They were described in the menu as:

Banana Oat Pancake - “Two pancakes made with bananas and oat flour, served with fresh fruit, butter and Flagel’s pure maple syrup”

Buttermilk Pancakes “Two pancakes served with fresh fruit, butter and Flagel’s pure maple syrup”

These pancakes were amazing. As a disclaimer, I’m allergic to strawberries, so I won’t be able to review their contribution to pancakes, but the rest of it was divine. The pancakes were just the right amount of fluffy, not too large but not too flat. They were perfectly browned. The butter and the maple syrup were high-quality, which always increases a pancake’s taste considerably. The light amount of powdered sugar was a great addition, it added a sweetness that was needed in the oat pancake. The banana oat pancake had a unique texture because of the oat flour. It would have been mealy had it not been evened out by the texture of the banana. With banana, there is always the worry of the other flavors being overpowered, but in this pancake the balance was great. I’m not a person who likes banana-flavored candy, but this was the right amount. It was similar to banana bread levels of flavor. This and the oats made a great combo. I liked it, but it seemed almost less dessert-like, also it didn’t have the option to come with chocolate chips, which is always a huge setback. It had actually risen quite well considering the oat flour. Very impressive. The buttermilk pancake also rose well, but with its ingredients that’s easier to do. This is a classic recipe that they did right. The chocolate chips were evenly placed and not burned, very good. Overall, very very good pancakes.

The banana oat pancake did not have the option to add chocolate chips (only -.5 points because the other pancake came with choc chips)

Almost a weird texture in the banana oat pancakes, but not quite

I don’t know what else to say, they were great

Overall: 9.5/10

There you have it. We’re off to a great start, review-wise! The pancakes can only get worse from here, and I look forward to it. Hopefully this helps if you’re interested in eating some pancakes. It makes me want some just writing about it. I am going to eat lunch. Eat what makes you happy!

Early Monday morning, officers with the Benton Township Police Department were dispatched to 308 1/2 S. Crystal in Benton Harbor for a welfare check of the resident, 38-year-old Willie Lark Jr. A family member told police that they had found the front door open and suspected blood in the doorway. Officers found live ammunition and spent shell casings in the home. Lark Jr. was not on scene and has not been located.
