Kinda funny how both Powerpuff Girls and Courage the Cowardly Dog had showbiz-themed revenants as villains.
Imagine a team-up. Best story I can think of is that Benton decides to make a biopic film about Abracadaver when he was Al Lusion with Abracadaver playing himself (when asked why Abracadaver doesn’t wear makeup and still looks like a zombie when playing his living self, Benton only replies, ‘Symbolism.’) The two capture Courage and then tell the Powerpuff Girls they will kill this innocent dog unless Blossom agrees to play the Girl with the Teddy Bear in the film.
(Maybe we even see the real girl with the teddy bear all grown up. Imagine her talking to Professor Utonium about how she accidentally created a villain and the Professor looking forlornly at the volcano observatory in response.)

The hell is everyone always acting like King Ramses was the scariest thing to ever happen in Courage? You know how many nightmares I had as a child of the silly cgi man? How many nights I was up thinking about whatever slab he wants me to return?
None, zilch.
Donut.
That’s not me gloating about being a tough kid or whatever, this show scared the SHIT out of my 7 year old ass many times. But that absolute meme????? He’s not even top ten material. His episode is literally more comedy that keeps taking the piss out of itself than actual horror. He’s not properly even a monster or a villain, just a very patient ghost that only wants to punish stubborn grave robbers, and he admittedly has catchy taste in music. If I were to make an iceberg meme about this show, Ramses wouldn’t even show up below the water line. But does he really deserve that reputation?
I’m trying so hard to understand why y’all have lower case ‘t’ trauma surrounding this character but somehow don’t even remember to mention…… this
Tumblr media
That shit made me turn the channel immediately whenever the cockroach episode came up for years.
Or like, the windmill vandals. Good lord why does no one talk about the windmill vandals? They had NO business bringing that level of suspenseful storytelling or that art style to a prime time CN broadcast slot. The ost played on their arrival is still downright dread inducing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Harvest moon guy??? Anyone else remember him or is it really just me bearing that mental burden???? Like actually wtf was with them approving the harvest moon episode’s direction? This is honest to god not photoshop, just actual screen caps burned forever into my elder zoomer brain.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’re Gonna overshadow that t h i n g for the Man in Gauze?
Or do the same with Benton Tarantella and his associate?
Tumblr media
And honest to god if ANYTHING, any single moment in this entire series actually rightfully earned the childhood nightmares it starred in, it was not King Ramses when this sequence was also aired to compete with him
Tumblr media
Yep… still gives me the shivers…

Alias/Name: Tarren
Birthday: January 1
Zodiac: Capricorn
Height: 5'1"
Hobbies: writing, reading, playing video games, watching movies/tv shows
Favourite color: red, blood red, Louboutin red, candy apple red, fire engine red, etc.
Favourite book: Plague of the Dead by Z.A Recht. I've read the first book sooo many times.
Last Song: Cheerleader by Ashnikko
Last Movie/Show: Face-Off
Recent Read: Last thing I read was some fics and they were mostly Miguel O'Hara things hehe
Inspiration: Music is always my inspiration and since it's fall/winter I'm listening to a lot of oldies/vintage music.
Story behind URL: Alright so the episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog (fave cartoon) "Everyone Wants to Direct" is one of the darker episodes and also one of my favorites because movie directors and as a kid I wanted to be one and also zombies. So naturally I latched onto the antagonist Benton Tarantella (Quentin Tarantino parody) but as a kid I thought he said his name was TaranTERROR so one day in school I made a user name and it was Tarren Terror and it's stuck ever since. My quote from my blog is also from the show, the inspirational bathtub barracuda.
Fun Fact: In the spirit of preserving a bit of history and my childhood, I purchased both (very large and very heavy) box office signs to a local movie theater of mine that was bought out by a larger company and then bought out by a furniture store who further gutted the building. The theater opened in 1996 and as far as I know they are the original signs because I've been going to that theater since I was very young. They still work and the owner of the building threw in one of those large light up poster holders they put on the side of the wall. I couldn't take the 12+ft neon snack sign, but he also let me have some of the foam popcorn pieces that were attached to it.

I’m often asked to share my commissions I got from Dilly, so here they are!!! I have an official Benton Tarantella wall that they all hang from, but I took them out of their frames to scan them in high def. I’m immensely grateful for being given the opportunity to commission Dilworth, and he is open for commissions of Courage characters from pretty much everyone, I think. Check out his website: stretchfilms.com and perhaps you can commission him, too. (: His rates are very reasonable as well, since he is someone in the industry.

So, like, can we talk about the Courage the Cowardly Dog episode “Ball of Revenge” for a moment? Because holy FUCK it has problems.
I liked the episode when I first saw it, mostly because I’m a sucker for “all the villains team up to take on the hero” plots. Even today, I don’t absolutely despise the episode because I feel like there were some elements that were done quite well. That said, the more I thought about it, the more I realized how fucked the episode’s actual plot is in execution.
For those who haven’t seen the episode and just hear me speaking gibberish right now, I’ll sum up: Eustace throws a temper tantrum because he wanted a blanket that Muriel knitted for Courage, so he calls up six of the monsters and villains the dog had confronted throughout the series (Katz, Le Quack, the Black Puddle Queen, the Clutching Foot, the Weremole, and the Cajun Fox) to get together and kill him.
You might’ve noticed the first problem with this plot: Eustace being the one to bring the villains together. Why Eustace? He’s not a villain! Sure he’s an asshole, and there were some villains on the show that were direct counterparts to him (like Mr. Nasty in “Angry Nasty People” and The Whip in “Cowboy Courage”) but the man himself has only ever been a comical, bumbling oaf who caused problems with his clear anger issues, shortsighted greed, and general idiocy. He is the last person anyone would expect to pull off a scheme like this!
How about the fact that his descent into villainy was because of a fucking blanket? And I thought Killian’s motive for becoming a villain in Iron Man 3 was stupid!
Now, let’s take a look at the bad guys the episode brought back. Some of them kinda make sense, but on the whole, their presence becomes baffling just because Eustace was the one to call them together. Eustace didn’t know most of these people, those he did know hated him and tried to kill him, and there’s no way he should’ve been able to contact half of them. Yeah, he had an operator “make some calls” (remember when people did that?) but sorry. I don’t buy it.
Katz: He’s the most obvious villain to bring back, being the most reoccurring enemy faced on the show, and I have no problem with him being part of this team. My problem is: why are he and Eustace working together? Katz has tried to kill him and his wife on four separate occasions, and he committed the unforgivable mortal sin of sitting in Eustace’s chair. Not to mention Eustace has played a direct role in defeating Katz twice, so there should be no reason these characters would be willing to work together. I’m sure some take issue with Katz being alive at all due to his apparent demise being eaten by a shark in “Katz under the Sea,” but I’m willing to give it a pass because it was ambiguous enough that you could bullshit a reason to say he survived.
Le Quack: Again, not only has this character repeatedly menaced the Bagge household and not just Courage, but Eustace and Le Quack have never actually met one another. In all of Le Quack’s previous appearances, Eustace only interacted with the devious duck when he was masquerading as a trusted professional, and by the time the fiendish fowl doffed his dastardly disguise and went full speed ahead with his evil plan du jour, the old farmer was either locked in a closet, hypnotized, or without glasses. Le Quack had also met his apparent end in a previous episode when his hot air balloon got shot down by police cannons, but like Katz, it was ambiguous enough that they could’ve easily brought him back.
The Black Puddle Queen: You’d think Eustace would harbor at least a tiny grudge against the woman who tried to cannibalize him, but nope! He can forgive that, but not stealing a blanket that didn’t belong to him in the first place? The old man needs to get his priorities in order! Also, it’s a little weird that she could even join these villains at all, since Courage left her trapped by closing the portal to her underwater lair, but whatever. We have no idea how her magic works, so you could always say she found a way back. I mean, either she or someone of her species was back to her old tricks by the very end of her debut episode after her defeat, so who knows?
The Cajun Fox: Again, how does Eustace even know who this guy is? The old man was completely absent from “Cajun Granny Stew,” the Fox’s only prior appearance. Also, Eustace doesn’t seem the slightest bit bothered that the guy tried to eat Muriel. What is it about Eustace not caring if people get eaten? The Fox was also defeated when he fell into his own pot of boiling stew, but like with prior villains, you could very easily say he survived, so no complaints there.
The Clutching Foot: This is the character who makes the least amount of sense to be here. Leaving aside that I’d personally prefer it if he never showed up at all because of how stomach-churningly repulsive he is just to look at, he was only alive after having possessed Eustace’s body, so the two cannot exist in the same place at the same time. Also, unlike the other villains whose deaths were ambiguous, this guy explicitly got destroyed in his debut episode with no possible way of returning — and he even mentions how he died in this episode!
The Weremole: He has the second-least reason to be here, because he wasn’t really the same kind of villain that the others were. He was just a dumb animal acting on predatory instincts. And despite the villains in this episode being united by a desire for revenge, the Weremole has nothing to get revenge for since Courage didn’t actually “defeat” him. He just plucked a hair off of him (which he didn’t even notice) and cured Muriel of her curse before she could harm anyone else. Speaking of, he turned Eustace’s wife into a monster and almost got the old man killed, but I think it’s clear by this point that Eustace places absolutely no value on human life, his own or anyone else’s.
Again, this episode’s concept is fantastic, and there are many ways it could’ve been fixed. Here’s what I would’ve done differently. In my version of the episode, the ringleader of this band of monsters and freaks would not have been Eustace, but a different reoccurring foe: Benton Tarantella. His career’s been in a bit of a slump since his reality show got canned, so he decided to make a comeback by returning to his roots and making a snuff film with Courage as the “star.” He puts out a “casting call” to recruit anyone who’d have a bone to pick with the Cowardly canine, and Katz, Le Quack, the Black Puddle Queen, the Cajun Fox, Fusilli*, and Mad Dog enthusiastically sign on. From there, the episode plays out like normal: Eustace and Muriel get kidnapped, Courage has to save them, he falls into the villains’ trap, and they challenge him to a deadly game of dodgeball, which Tarantella will justify with “What? Sports movies are all the rage these days!” This version might have its problems, sure, but at least it’s more sensible than what we got.
* (And yes, I know Fusilli got turned into a puppet by the end of his debut episode, but hear me out: Eustace and Muriel also got turned into puppets in that episode, and we never saw them return to normal, but they fact that they’ve become human again by the next episode could be interpreted to mean that the puppet curse wears off if the puppets stay away from Fusilli’s stage for long enough. It’s not perfect, but any attempt at an explanation is good enough for me.)

Growing up, one of my favorite shows was Courage the Cowardly Dog, you know a show about a mutt who lived with an elderly couple in the Middle of Nowhere and strange things often happen to the family. Admittedly, I was never terrified of the show (well except for that one episode where that blue trumpet thing appeared; even then, it was more disturbing than scary). One episode I remembered watching was known as "Ball of Revenge." Going into it, it seemed like a promising premise: having the previous villains return to for vengeance on the little dog one last time is an awesome idea in itself. But then you get into what actually kickstarts the later plot: Eustace becomes enraged when he discovers Courage sleeping on his blanket. And so what does he do? He calls some of Courage's previous foes together to kill the dog. What the hell? Yes, Eustace literally called several villains from past episodes together to kill Courage all because Courage happened to be sleeping on a blanket he owned. Petty doesn't even begin to describe this. Worse, this episode confirms that Eustace was at the very least aware of the threat that some of the villains had displayed, which makes him such an ungrateful bastard in hindsight.
Well, despite this, did he at the very least invite villains that were great? There's Katz and Le Quack for starters. That makes sense because they were recurring enemies of Courage. I have issue with the other villains, however. For one, the Cajun Fox. He has no reason to be in this episode because Eustace wasn't even in that episode, so he should have no idea on who Cajun Fox even was. The Queen from the Black Puddle? She nearly tried to eat him. Of course he was under her spell, so maybe he didn't remember. The Weremole was simply a predator with no moral agency, and Courage didn't even combat him. The Clutching Foot especially makes no sense because Eustace WAS the Clutching Foot and he was licked out of existence by Courage. So no explanation as to how the Clutching Foot returned in spite of this? No? Okay. So, how can you make Eustace even more of a jackass than he already is? He suggests that they take Muriel hostage which would force Courage to come to her rescue. Just, what the hell, Eustace? What happened to the guy who was hesitant about using his wife as bait in order to lure a sea serpent, or that touching scene between them in "The Mask?" Was his hatred for Courage so strong that he'd let that destroy any special moments with his wife? Anyway, Courage is captured and is made to play dodgeball with the rogues gallery. As expected, he gets pulverized, but he thwarts his enemies by screaming loudly, causing the floor beneath them to give way and they fall to their presumed deaths. And Eustace doesn't receive a heavy punishment for his actions.
As I have said, this could've been a great episode, but there are several flaws behind it. As for how I would fix the episode, for starters, I would've actually liked it for Eustace to have been hypnotized or corrupted into someone into teaming up with the previous villains. For instance, I like the idea of having Ma Bagge be the one pulling the strings. Because if you really think about it, she had some moments where she was committing nefarious misdeeds, so it would make a great deal of sense that she would be the one to want to pick a bone with Courage. With the villains, keep Katz and Le Quack, but as for the remaining teammates, I would've personally inserted Schwick, Benton Tarantella, and the Chicken from Outer Space into the ring. With the last one in particular, the Chicken was the main villain of the original pilot, and returned to get Courage's head as a replacement in his return episode. His sons were sent by their mother to eliminate Courage in their only episode, etc. If anything, the Chicken had every reason to want to end Courage like Katz would. But the villains should also play off of each other like playing off of each others' strengths or maybe have more scenes of dialogue with each other.
With Eustace, I would've liked it that when Courage was being brutalized, his conscience would force him to reflect on all of the times Courage saved his sorry ass which would make him feel a twinge of remorse. Maybe he'd realize how horrible he'd be and try to call the dodgeball game off only to then be tied up alongside his wife. But most of all, I would've liked it immensely if all of the allies Courage made throughout the show's run teamed up to save Courage. Characters ranging from the Hunchback of Nowhere, Kitty and Bunny, Bigfoot, or the Shadow; they all could've had at least a few minutes to pitch in the effort to rescue Courage, and afterward, this would be their send off.
Overall, while it's not the worst episode of the show's run, I wish that it would've been better. Maybe 22 hours rather than 11 minutes. There, they could've pitched in more character interactions between the villains or made alterations with Eustace to keep him from completely crossing the line as well as having Courage's old allies aid him. Other than that, it was an okay episode.
