it'd be really fucking nice to just feel and like things a normal amount. but nooooo my neurodivergent ass really gotta just fall madly and obsessively in love with fictional characters and then have unhealthy levels of emotions over them and how fucked up and sad their lives are

the thing that always breaks my heart about benji ovich is just... how good he is. how selfless. how kind. how he helps people without expecting anything in return, without even asking for acknowledgement. he just has such a strong, solid moral streak, far superior to that of his peers and even those of the adults around him.
he stops bobo from attacking amat in his fury after their first training session together, saving amat (whom he just met) from potentially serious injury. he splits with kevin, his best friend and the boy he’s loved for years, for the unforgivable act of hurting an innocent girl. he’s one of the first few people to believe maya and take her side. he wrecks an entire bathroom in school just so she doesn’t get in trouble for smashing the mirror, taking on all the blame for himself. he steps aside in the bathroom as she’s storming out so that she doesn’t physically touch him and relive her trauma. time and time again he throws himself in the line of fire to protect the people around him, even those he barely knows.
and in spite of all that he still truly believes himself to be a monster. he’s convinced that he’s beyond redemption, that something inside him is irreparably damaged. he doesn’t want to be saved because he doesn’t think he deserves it. he gets high and starts fights and shuts people out because he’s afraid of those he loves seeing how gentle and vulnerable he truly is. despite being one of the most self-sacrificing and considerate individuals in beartown, he still makes himself out to be the villain.
it just gets me every time, man.

I can’t express to you how grateful I am that Amat and Maya never got together in Beartown. And how Maya didn’t get with anyone in the series.
Amat went through some serious growth, but we can’t forget that he witnessed Maya’s rape and allowed her to get cruicified by the residents of Beartown for it. Despite him knowing the truth- that Maya wasn’t lying- he didn’t say anything in favor of fitting in with the team. He did come out in defence of Maya later on, but the damage was already done. He chose to be silent.
Maya forgave Amat and they became friends, but after what he did, having a romantic relationship would be off the table. Not only that, but because of Maya’s trauma from the assault, she probably wouldn’t be in the mental head space to date anybody. Even in the last installment of the series, she is getting there, but she isn’t ready to be with anyone romantically.
Not all female characters need romance subplots. Maya was a character that didn’t need a love interest, so she didn’t have one. She existed as her own character, and her plot focused on her, her familial relationships, and her friends. Some authors- mostly male- can’t comprehend that women can exist without a boyfriend, but Maya remained single the whole series. Another reminder that Fredrick Backman is a genius and one of- if not the only- man I trust to write female protagonists with grace and respect.

What is life, other than moments? What is laughter, other than a small victory over sorrow? A single moment, just one, when everything inside us isn't broken.

Jeanette stands and stares at the wreckage. Meets Benji's gaze and watches as he is led away. The boy smashed up an entire bathroom and accepted both suspension and the cost of repairs without blinking. All because he didn't want anyone to know that Maya had smashed a mirror. He had decided that she had already bled enough.

KIND OF SPOILER FOR THE WINNERS - A theory about Benji's and the first page of Vinnarna
I think they should really go for the original title instead of Vinnarna / The Winners, which was something like Those Who Runs Towards The Fire like Backman mentioned in a Facebook post. Because that's pure Benji. On the first page of the book, when it says "boys like Benjamin", I think it's reflecting THAT. That kind of person, those who really really really runs towards the fire to make the impossibly savings he does the whole trilogy.
(Don't remember the exactly words because I read it in Swedish with the help of Google translator, but that's the meaning)

Haven't posted in awhile, but I am finally ready to share some of my thoughts on "The winners" by F. Backman,so SPOILERS!!! I knew where this was going, we all did, with Benji, but man, did I cry my eyes out🥺 The way he went was noble, protecting little Alicia(do you spell it like this, lol), but it still pissed me. The whole"the other side of the story"like I call it with Ruth and Mateo wasn't exactly something I liked, but it served well. Happy for Bobo,Tess is exactly the girl I pictured him with. On the new characters, apart from what I said, I liked the most of them. Was jumping from joy when Richard Teo got destroyed even though it is only mentioned, pissed me off big time. Over all, I liked it, it is like life, hardly a happy ending in the first place, what is left for all. Would like to read something else from Backman soon. P.S. The fact Teemu would have a son that likes football instead of hockey made me laugh, I have a soft spot for him, as usual, lol, he is a bad boy🙈.

I finished Us Against You and here's what I have to say.
I love Benjamin Ovich so much. He is one of the most respectable people to have walked the fictional Earth. So highly respected by everyone - in town and out. Maybe it's out of fear, or maybe it's pity, or maybe it's out of just respect for his character. He smells like pine and bonfires. He climbs trees and solves problems with his fists. He sacrifices himself for others and takes the fall unconditionally. He's a child of the forest. His role models are all women who raised him perfectly. His moral compass is unbreakable. He conformed to other's labels and lost himself. He hears others out before forming an opinion. He is the most caring motherfucker and many people skip over that part of him. He is hurting, but no one can read that about him. He can not be controlled but can be tamed. He thinks before he speaks, and he doesn't talk much unless he means it. He can't handle responsibility. Deep down he is still just a boy. A wildfire. A diamond in the rough. But he's our Benji. And despite his flaws, I love Benji so much.
God if I was in the Beartownverse, I would be so painfully in love with him but so much that I would follow him anywhere. I would love him so much that as long as I was in his life, I would be happy. He would never love me back in the same way, no. And that'd be okay. I would still look for him in everyone I met. And I'd sacrifice everything for his happy ending.
The Winners is going to destroy me. Fredrik Backman I am SOBBING and SIMPING over a fictional man

at the end of the day, i guess i'm no different from the girls of Beartown: helplessly, haplessly, and hopelessly in love with Benji Ovich.

"You're the one who's wrong."
"Screw you," Maya hisses and moves toward the door and the boy slips nimbly out of the way so she won't have to come into contact with him. And only much later will she realize what a considerate gesture that was.
Benji utters the words so quietly that at first she thinks she's misheard. "You're the one who's wrong Maya, because you think he's still my best friend."
