Review: "Gitanjali" by Rabindranath Tagore
Though the English translation is marred by earlier publisher tampering, this translation by the author remains a beautiful work of layered prayer and thought on peace and salvation.

তবু মনে রেখো।
If I am near
But you see me not, for I have disguised myself as a shadow -
Forget me not.

Literary analysis of famous Bengali detective fiction : A queer interpretation
When you put off the spectacles of heteronormitivity and try to emulate the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and his assistant John Watson, you will always end up questioning their relationship. Thankfully , there ARE some (actual) works where people tried to set up a few questions with canonical evidences that hardly have any straight explanation.
As a voracious reader of crime fiction, I have always felt the pain of not having quality literary criticism of these Bengali detective stories ( leave LGBT themes...). So one day I felt the tug to write something about this...and this was the prouduct that came out.
There is a popular Bengali detective fiction named Jayanta Manik written by Hemendra Kumar Roy and the premise is based on the Raj-era of British India. Jayanta and Manik are the protagonists- sharp minded, courageous, nationalist lads who solve crime together. Most of the time the detective inspector Sunderbabu fetches cases to them.
Bosom friends or life partners : A relationship in question
Jayanter Kirti
Even in the first story, the writer gives us a lot of things to ponder about the relationship between our protagonists. In the first scene Jayanta is seen reading an English detective book lying on the easy chair when an anxious Maniklal ( in first few stories Manik is addressed as Maniklal by the narrator but Jayanta always addresses him as 'Manik') comes running to him screaming his name ( 'Jai'). When Jayanta asks him the matter, Manik conveys an interesting news to Jai and readers know it's the time to buckle up.
Now the writer gives us information about our protagonists. He says
" Tara dujonei mata-pitrihin, kajei swadhin. Dujoneri kichu kichu paitrik sompotti ache ,kajei tader swadhinota khunno howar bhoi nei" ( Both of them are orphans...so are independent. They have some inherited property so there is nothing that will be the hindrance to their independent lives).
In this story Manik and Jayanta live in separate houses ( probably their parents' houses) but later inspector Sunderbabu is seen knocking the door of their house. In Amar Goyendagiri Jayanta kind of scolds Manik for his lack of brain and they go to the same house. In another story named Bonsai Rahasya Manik is reading a newspaper for Jai and he says that their breakfast is done and it seems like it's kind of his duty to read the news out loud for his friend everyday in the morning. Isn't it a bit weird to think that Manik and Jayanta live in separate houses and Manik visits him everyday in the morning, have breakfast with him and he is always available whenever Jayanta needs him? In conclusion we can say that later they started living together under the same roof. We will discuss this part in other stories.
Jayanta and Manik are college friends and they only have each other as their family. These youths are overenthusiastic about detective fiction and have consumed a lot of fiction written by Edger Allan Poe, Maurice Leblanc and especially Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes is their idol.
The relationship between these two often reminds a reader of the world famous Holmes Watson duo. Though Conan Doyle has described their first meeting in The Study in Scarlet , Jayanta and Manik's first meeting was never mentioned in any story. Probably they knew each other since they were teens. Manik is not as intelligent as Jayanta, still Jayata says " Manik Amar daan haat" ( Manik is my right hand). The meeting of Sherlock and Watson or Byomkesh and Ajit was accidental but these two knew each other years before they became known detectives in Calcutta.
With the help of his practical knowledge in science and his ability to make deduction and minute observation Jayanta is a gifted shokher detective. On the other hand Manik is not as intelligent as his partner but he is definitely as brave as Jai. An assassin sent by the villain of the story, Vobotosh Majumder tries to shoot Jayanta but luckily the bullet leaves a mere scratch on his face. When Sunderbabu was busy elsewhere Manik panics and screams, " Jai, Jai! Ki holo!" ( Jai, Jai! What happened?). In another portion Jayanta says to Sunderbabu,
" " Boddo porishrom hoyeche Sunderbabu! Aj ar kono kotha noi. Ekhon ami opore giye ektu bisram korbo- orthat banshi bajabo!"
Sunderbabu bhru kuchke bollen, " Bisram korbe orthat banshi bajabe?"
_ " agge hya. Banshi bajiyei ami bisram kori, ar Manik bisram kore amar banshi bajano shunte shunte. Eta amader onekdiner ovvyas. Na Manik?"
Manik haste haste Ghar nere shaye deye"
( Enough work for today, Sunderbabu! Now I will go upstairs to take a rest- to play flute!"
Sunderbabu wrinkled his eyebrows , " You will play flute to take rest?"
" Yes, Sir! I take rest by playing the flute and Manik takes rest listening to my playing. It's our old habit...isn't it, Manik?"
Manik smiled and nodded")
Readers will pause here for a moment to reconstruct the interpretation of their relationship. Clearly their relationship is just more intimate that it seems.
Jayanta isn't someone who sweet-talks. When he is activated to solve a case his words may sound pretty harsh and rude. But it's Manik before whom he doesn't conceal his softer side ( we will discuss it further in Moron Khelar Khelowar). These two make plans to watch the bioscope and spend their leisure time together. Manik is extremely loyal to Jai and never leaves him alone in his dangerous adventures. Even knowing that it is dangerous and idiotic to go to the Bajra of their vicious enemy, Manik accompanies a stubborn impulsive Jayanta and they get into trouble as expected. Fortunately, they manage to run away by diving into the cold water of Ganga in winter.
( This thing was left in my Google doc for ages so I thought to post it here. (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.) )
