মনের মানুষ - Soulmate
[Steve Rogers x Indian!bengali!GN!reader
Summary: your heart is aching for a home that no longer exists. Steve finds you in the middle of emotional turmoil.
Warning: homesickness, childhood trauma if you squint, mention of political disturbance, fluff, cursing, Steve being an absolute sweetheart, Steve also getting the feels]
Tumblr media
youtube
After the third round of knocking incessantly at your bedroom door, Steve huffed. He didn't want to intrude, in case you weren't decent or something.
"Sorry y/n," he muttered before twisting the handle, fully expecting to find it closed, unyielding.
His eyes widened, first in mild surprise at the ease with which he'd made it in: no locked doors. Then in shock, since his favourite person - you - was currently curled up on the floor, facing the sunset. Knees pulled up to your chest and tears streaming down your face as you whimpered softly now and then.
The next emotion was confusion at the music playing in the room - something that sounded like a folk song sung by a gravelly male voice in a language he didn't understand. However, he'd heard you speak or sing in it to yourself enough to know it was Bengali.
He joined you on the floor, quietly tapping your arm.
You turned your head to look at him, making no effort to wipe away the salty moisture on your cheeks. "I miss home."
Three words. Just three words from you tugged violently on his heart-strings, making him scoot closer and wrap his arms around you, pulling you closer. You let him engulf you, finding comfort in him.
He didn't bother asking any questions. He knew the answers. Unfair elections and totalitarian practices had completely destroyed the political opposition in India five years ago. You'd watched democracy fall apart slowly but surely within fifteen years. Your beloved state of West Bengal, safe from the ruling party till then, had been overpowered too.
You'd run. You'd wished you could stay and do something, be a patriot, but you'd run. Forced yourself to throw yourself and your best efforts into medical school, even if your heart had ached for a different subject instead. You'd clenched your jaw and survived five years of suffocating dictatorship (nobody ever called it that but that's what it was) and communal riots. Then, the moment you'd graduated, you'd packed your things and left your homeland for a stable future.
You hadn't taken anyone with you. Your family wasn't the best and you'd made the decision to go no contact with them while still in high school. You'd lied to them about where you would be living, promised them you'd call. At the airport, just before boarding, you'd sent your mother the final text you'd silently prepared beforehand, listing everything she'd done wrong and refused to make up for and why you felt wronged. You'd apologised for being so harsh, and for abandoning them, but explained that you needed to protect yourself and you couldn't do it while staying with them. Then you'd thrown away your phone.
It was for the best, for your best, but you still missed the carefree life of your early years. Carefree, not in the sense that you weren't being hurt over and over, but carefree in the sense that you were naïve enough not to realise you were being hurt. You were alone in this new environment. Yes, you'd found friends, you'd found Steve. But a part of you still felt lonely.
Steve knew all of this. He'd held you close the day you poured all of it out. And he held you close now as the homesickness returned.
"I'm a fucking coward," you sniffle. "I should've stayed and tried to fight. Spoken up. Done something. Said something. Anything. I didn't even try. Like a selfish bitch."
He pressed a kiss to your head, stroking your hair and shushing you. He'd save that conversation for later. Right now you didn't need a response from him, you needed to let your feelings out. He'd always be here to wipe your tears away and get you back on your feet.
You hugged him tighter, and he pulled you into his lap, leaning against the bed as he closed his eyes, focusing on the song playing on loop.
Weirdly, it felt like home. Nevermind that he understood nothing. There was something earthen and rustic about the song and its ambience, something that called to him. He thought of his mother. A little voice in him said she'd love this music too. He felt his own eyes water as well, and blinked to prevent them from spilling.
You turned in his arms a little so now your back was to his chest, and you both watched the sun go down in silence.
When you'd calmed down, he brought one of your hands up to his lips. "Do you feel like going out and getting some ice cream? Or brownies?"
You giggled - despite the surge of emotions earlier. "I'd love that. Thank you," you met his calm and loving eyes, genuine gratitude in your own.
"Of course, honey."
Minutes later, as you held on to him from behind while his motorcycle wove in and out of traffic, you felt some of the weight lifting off your chest. Life had been rough, but it was better now. You were better now. Safe and loved. You'd be okay, right?
You rubbed his arm softly. He found your hand and squeezed it three times at a red light.
Yeah, you'd be okay.
[AN: This is the direct product of me being homesick, while sitting in my hometown, and being terrified for the future. Steve is my comfort character so I wrote this solely to calm myself; this is the most self-indulgent piece I've ever written. I know most of you won't relate to this much, but I hope that for once, you can put yourself in my place and at least try to understand the emotions in this fic rather than agonise over the details which don't apply to you.
AN 2: India is quasi-federal in structural, meaning while there is a Prime Minister to govern the entire country, every state also has their individual Chief Minister and Cabinet of Ministers for the affairs of said state. The party in power at the Centre isn't always the ruling party in every state. West Bengal is one of such states where the part in power is different from the one at the Centre...so far.
Current affairs in the country are really bad. Abuse of legislation, silencing the national press, completely altering the Constitution, bribing the judiciary, rigging the polls - it's all happening. It's bad enough that the UN and even other countries have criticised the central administration here. This fic is me being super scared that what I mentioned here will actually happen. Elections are this month, and like many other civilians, I'm desperately praying it doesn't take a turn for the worse.
AN 3: The song linked above is the inspiration for the title. মনের মানুষ (moner manush) translates to "soulmate". It is one of the most popular Baul songs. Baul are a category of Bengali folk songs which have double meanings. Most songs, at first listen, appear to be aimed at a lover, however, they can also be meant for God. It depends on how you wish to interpret them. They're a highly respected part of Bengali heritage and can be easily identified by the sound of the ektara in the instrumental, a one stringed musical instrument.]

Assorted thoughts on culture, generational trauma, racism, queerness and where they intersect for me
My family is from Bangladesh. Or they used to be. All of my great-grandparents were born there. At least 3 of my grandparents were born there as well. My mother travelled there on the back of trucks transporting hay. The town, practically the village, my father grew up in, is in Bangladesh.
There's this story my mother tells me. When I was around three years old, we were in a Bengali restaurant in New York and I was so happy to meet fellow Bengalis that I immediately started to speak Sylheti. They gave us a discount for that. called me Khuki and told my parents how nice it was to speak in the language of their home with someone once again.
Another time, another restaurant. This one is in London. I'm not three anymore. I don't speak Sylheti anymore either. They say I forgot because I had no one to speak it with. I don't even speak proper Bangla. It's now Bengali with a dash of Hindi. This time when we enter the restaurant, I don't approach the servers. They approach us and say how nice it is to find a fellow Bengali in the wild. We complain about how we're tired of white people food. My mother wishes she had macher jhol. The servers tell her to wait and bring out a plate of their own dinner. She cries as she eats it. Tears of joy and solidarity.
I'm twelve years old and for the first time, I decide to relearn my culture. I join a summer class, pencil in hand, ready to learn how to read and write all over again. I want to read my mother's magazines, the Feluda comics that she read out loud to me as a child. It paid off, but not in the way I expected, my mother fighting with my father, grabbing hold of my hand two days later as we boarded the aeroplane back to her father's house.
I'm 13 years old, on anti-depressants that I forgot to take some days, neurodivergence diagnosed, and learning more about myself each and every day. I come out as bisexual to my mom but do not tell her about my genderfluidity. Afraid of what she'll think when the daughter she always desired turns out to not be her daughter at all. We call my brother in Canada. He tells us about the people who shout slurs at him in the metro. We do not tell him that we are afraid that someday the slurs will turn into bullet wounds.
I'm fourteen years old, and my father's come to visit. It's his birthday so we travel to his parents' house. more than 4 hours away from ours. They greet us with barbed wire words on my grades, my brother's weight, my mother's inability to be a good wife. We smile through it all. I wonder how they can be so cruel. The people who cared for me when I was a child. The woman who named me now my worst enemy.
I'm fifteen years old now. My Bangla is clearer. Sharp vowels and clear consonants. It will never be rounded syllables of my childhood ever again. I learn of the Bengal partition in school. Learn how people killed each other in the name of freedom. I want to scream, "Amra shobai ek." We are all the same. We share the same culture, the same language but in different dialects, the same history. Stop killing, please. I'm tired of the violence and hatred, I say. This war started before I was born, will it continue after I'm dead as well?
I gathered the courage to google LGBTQ+ laws in Bangladesh today. And I realised something. I love my culture. I love my roots. I love this language, my ancestors, and every family member, even though sometimes I feel like there are too many to count. But I do not love what they have made of it. I saw the words splashed across the newspaper headlines, Anti - Queer laws still in place, Being gay is punishable with a life sentence in prison, a gay man is stoned to death in public and no one does anything to stop it. I do not cry. I've been doing nothing but crying for too long now.
Instead, I'm writing this. I'm writing this to tell everyone that it isn't over. I'm writing this to tell everyone that if I'd been born 413 km to the west exactly, I wouldn't be alive to write this post right now. I'm writing this because I am tired of our stories going untold, buried under layers of propaganda and zealotry. I'm writing this because people think my being Hindu, my being Indian, my being Bengali means that I cannot be queer.
Well sorry to prove you wrong. Because I'm still here. And I'm still kicking. And as long as I'm alive, I'm not going to stop. Neither will the thousands of others like me, telling their stories in a thousand different ways, fighting for their people in a thousand different ways.
So this one is for those still kicking.
We're Here
We're Queer
And we're ready to fucking fight.

Same idiot here for information on what are like the culturally appropriate things to do for pujo in Bengal
(non Bengalis here's your guide to act native to pujo madness)
So, what IS pujo?
Following mahalaya, (if you don't know what that is, here's the infodump i did;)
Devispaksha begins. The goddess is returning home. There's a different side to this story however.
THE MYTHOLOGICAL SIDE AND WHAT THAT GREEN THING YOU SEE AT DURGA'S FEET IN EVERY PANDAL IS.
So, mahishasur was believed to be a monster. He one day decided to go into the depths of a jungle and sit for an intense tapasya. So he did. He prayed to lord brahma for months and months. He was covered in ivy and moss, Insects grew on him but he stayed firm. For months he prayed, without food or water. Brahma, impressed by his tenacity appeared before him. Mahishasur asked for the boon of immortality. Brahma granted him his wish. "You shall not be killed by any man in heaven, hell, or earth." Strengthened by his boon, Mahishasur attacked Indrapuri, The court of God Indra. He captured his throne. The gods turned to brahma for help. Brahma, on realising his mistake, went to consult with Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. the gods decided that as mahishasur couldn't be destroyed by any MAN, they needed to create a female source of power to end him. The gods gathered. They collected their powers and from the blinding lights, emerged the goddess of feminine power-Durga. She was bestowed with weapons; she was given strikingly beautiful features, And then, armed with a hundred hands and skilled in hundred different weapons, she went on the fight. Mahishasur, initially enthralled by her beauty, proposed to marry her; but she declared war. The battle went on for days. At the end, Durga's vahan, the lion pounced on the asur, Durga stepped on him and piercing her trishul through his heart, emerged victorious. The evil was dead. The power that laid within the flashing eyes of the goddess had won.

GOT IT. SO WHAT DO I DO DURING PUJAS?
Puja celebrations usually don't start in it's full-fledged glory till atleast the fifth day (panchami). it continues till the tenth day (Dashami).
If you live in kolkata during pujas, GO OUT. The whole city is bedazzled in lights, there are fairs through the city. Nobody sits at home; everybody is out on the roads sparkling and dressed to nines. Wear your best dresses and walk through the streets at night till the sun comes up. The most major part of pujas is pandal hopping. Thousands of pandals with budgets of crores are made at various spots in the city. These are pandals as huge as marketplaces; each with different themes. There are competitions every year between them, based on which pandal had the best durga idol, which had the best theme, which had the best structure, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pujas are the time when Kaash ful(the white flowers I clicked last year in the fourth picture) are in full bloom, there are lotuses in bloom in ponds; nature is bedecked in her best jewels.
Keeping in spirit with the goddess returning home, bengalis usually return home during pujas. it's a time to visit families, revsit old friends and have complete unabashed fun. It's time to gobble down on junk foods as much as you can. Oh and girls, on Ashtami(or the eighth day), make sure you put on your best sarees for arti and bedazzle the guys on the road;)
Despite the intense commercialization of the pujas that has happened in the last few years, it still remains an extremely core emotion for us bengalis. It's the time of homecoming, of taking a break and reconnecting to our roots every year. it's the time of visiting family, of recreating old memories, of re-living new and old romances. It's the whole world celebrating you coming home. It's the world celebrating the power that lays inside every woman- a mother, a sister, a wife.

More people should watch indian cheesy movies from 80s and 90s and 00s and 10s coz that's literally fanfic material every single movie. 'oh I wish there was a movie where they're lost loves reincarnated and falling in love-' JATISWAR. BOOM! 'Oh she loves him but he chooses someone else but his daughter reunites them later-' KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI. BOOM! 'They're strangers who meet on train and hate each other but get stranded then on good terms and fall in love but she's arranged to get married to someone else so he tries to win her family-' DDLJ. BOOM! 'Theyre academic rivals and enemies in the 60s medical school and fall in love but she finds out the truth about her birth and spirals and have a sad heartbreaking ending with religious overtones' SAPTAPADI. BOOM!
And don't get me started on wattpad and romance novel peeps like she's the eldest from a poor family but a lot of people to feed so someone tries to take advantage of her and tries to buy sex from her with money but she gets hit by the car of a millionaire and gets amnesia but he nurses her back to health and marries her but hides what happened to her to spare her but she remembers her family and pushes him away and runs away but comes back and forgives him because they truly love each other now- ALO AMAR ALO. BOOM! And this wasn't even 90s this was in fucking 1979. Y'all need to give Indian cinema the credit it deserves.
Om Shanti Om - reincarnation, true love, murder mystery, the greatest song ever summing up the entire story in 7 mins
Happy new year - found family, heist, revenge, 'dance ek aat hai ek aat. Tab Maine kab bola nau hai.'
Race 2 - zero plot. Car flies from airplane with baby parachutes. Best entertainment of my life.
Entertainment - Golden retriever gets a human brother and 200 million dollar.
Basanto Bilap - a girls' hostel and boys' hostel have been enemies. Or their leaders have been while the rest of them are dating on the down low.
Hasee toh phasee - Autistic girl and her sister's fiance fall in love. She's also a thief.
Sholay - THE bromance movie. 'Arre o samba, kitne aadmi the?' Kaz Brekker studied under Jai and Bhiru. 'Aadha aadmi udhar jao, aadha aadmi idhar jao. Baaki mere pi6e aao.'
Literally feel free to add as many as you want from your regions coz I could only add Bengali and Hindi ones.

ଓ ৴ Kash has always been convinced that the future lies within the sciences. To her, technological advancements weren't just about improving the lives of the wealthy, but rather benefiting all living beings. Yet, her fascination with science wasn't solely pragmatic; she was entranced by the magic it held. The ability to transform something as minuscule as code or nanotechnology into a living, breathing entity fascinated her deeply. The idea that with a few lines of code and some expensive computer components, one could create life was nothing short of miraculous. For Kash, the future resided in the realm of technology. ଓ ৴ The loss of her mother at a young age, shortly after Kash's birth, left a lingering guilt within her, despite no one blaming her. She harbored a desire to shape a world where death was more a concept than a harsh reality. ଓ ৴ Growing up in a family of modest means, their sacrifices made Kash's education possible. Excelling particularly in the sciences during her high school years, she yearned to push the boundaries of her ideas. ଓ ৴ When she was awarded a Delos scholarship for a full ride to her Ivy League school, she was overjoyed. Kash poured her heart and soul into her studies because Delos represented the future to her. If there was any company she desired to be a part of, it was Delos Enterprises. Her passion for computer biogenetics and her groundbreaking work in her major eventually caught the attention of her professors. For her internship, she was granted the opportunity to work in Delos' prestigious development labs, specializing in biogenetics and cutting-edge technologies. For four years, she played a pivotal role in shaping the latest advancements Delos offered to the world. ଓ ৴ However, as time passed, her admiration for the company soured. Her contributions were often overlooked, overshadowed by those with the Delos surname. Kashvi's growing resentment eventually evolved into a vengeful ambition. An ambitious woman, she had been burned by the company one too many times. While everyone believed the future belonged to Delos, Kashvi had different plans. When she envisioned her future with Delos, she saw herself leading them into the next era of technology. All she needed was to eliminate the competition standing in her way. ଓ ৴ She is well aware of the politics at play, the cutthroat nature of the world she didn't grow up in but moves about easily enough. Her kind smile and easy demeanor a helpful mask as appearing unassuming - she is the cinderella girl in most of their eyes. Delos her fairy godmother- giving her the life she always wanted. Kash plays her part well, waiting like a serpent in tall grass.

💚💙❤️♥️💛3/3❤️♥️💙💛💚 Happy Late 3/3 Day!! I’m two days late here but have all the 3s in my au! SELECT YOUR CHARACTER🎮👾 Here we have:
Tumblr media
A plant loving tree hugger 🌲🌿🍃🌱🪴
Tumblr media
A literal bluebird tweety man🦅 🐦
Tumblr media
A snappish yet wise rich prick 💰💸💵
Tumblr media
A whimsical musical alp grandparent🎵 🎼🎵
Tumblr media
A mortal turned god of fortune 🔮 🍀🪔✨
References/Trivia/Notes: (cause this post is long enough already lmao 😂 🤣)
Henry’s pose I used this basis from https://animebases.info/
Tumblr media
Wilfred’s pose I mainly based it off of Brook mainly this official one:
Tumblr media
RANDOM STUFF:
Wilfred is said to love music (he canonically whistles) so that’s kinda the reasons why I’ve picked Brook like if Ernest is the wise elder figure, Wilfred is totally the eccentric bouncy grandparent
I Gave him a more whimsical look like Brook like fancy (two feathers just for aesthetic) yet still willing to get dirty. Fun fact the music notes on his coat are from the Swiss national anthem, he has a conductor staff just for fun of it (his name and number are on the back of his coat)
Human/humanoid au he totally knows how to play many instruments and sings, totally uses the radio 📻 to listen to music, I know he looks like a henry but I saw a slighter different color on him on Deviantart made by LeatherBootlace with yellow so I added that to him
Off topic but Wilfred totally adopts my cfr diesels ocs (Corran Aldyn Shiloh Poll-ny-Chrink) since they also are musically in-tuned, he’a also a grandfatherly figure towards the others as well despite his moments of cynicism and age gap
Kyle very much has so many outfits throughout the years like the ones I’ve drawn during his time as Proteus so this would be of one his first appearances, he chooses the more storytelling fairytale like aesthetics like his feet are made entirely of gold dust so are his clothes he wears a cape simply to cover others in need and I tried to lean a bit more into his heritage
he looks up to Lady (still does but branches out later on and different views over humanity and morals and rights and wrongs that stuff honestly it’s complicated…) so sparkles at first he’s happy and excited over learning despite breaking down in tears to lady cause he wanted to fit the role despite being very modest and humble trying to look at the bright sides of things✨
kyles necklace is made up of many good luck charms like (four leaf clovers 🍀 horseshoes eye of Fatima etc)same with his belt he gets once he decides to wear a outfit he feels comfortable in, still quite elegant but he feels like himself since he still has control over his life somehow plus he brings good fortune instead of granting wishes (he kinda can but there’s a price)
Everyone in human au except Kyle (who’s mixed Bengali-Punjabi) and Adam (Filipino, maybe Jewish?) are Latino cause I couldn’t help myself haha , still working out the details on specific ethics
Henry has heterochima, still haven’t figured out the shades out though and Kyle can turn his sclera pupils and retinas into complete shades of different yellow to fit his new status (that was fun since he can use it to fit his cryptic nomad style later on after his first official fight) only his eyes remain sparkling gold in every other form✨

B-2 : Why Indians Need to Watch Frank Capra’s Movies?
Tumblr media
If you're a fan of Old Hollywood, you can realize the significance of Frank Capra (1897-1991) in the American Film Industry. An Italian by origin, he spent 89 years in the United States. His life story was that of a "rags to riches" one - an ideal example of achieving the American Dream. He also served in the United States Army during the Second World War - and made several war documentaries. One can learn about it in the Netflix series Five Came Back - with Guillermo del Toro narrating his story. Capra has influenced many directors of the post-World War II era (from Indian directors like Satyajit Ray & Raj Kapoor to foreign directors like Akira Kurosawa, Steven Spielberg, & Francois Truffaut). But what is it that makes Capra's work evergreen?
Before I start, I wish to talk about my rendezvous with Capra. I first heard about him when he attended the 1972 Oscars to co-present the Best Director Award with Natalie Wood (to William Friedkin for The French Connection). I watched six of Capra's movies between December 2021 and July 2022. They are:
It Happened One Night (1934)
Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936)
You Can't Take It with You (1938)
Mr. Smith s Goes to Washington (1939)
Meet John Doe (1941)
It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)
Tumblr media
(1) Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night
Tumblr media
(2) Raj Kapoor and Nargis in Chori Chori
I loved every single picture. While watching It Happened One Night, I found it similar to the 1956 Raj Kapoor-Nargis starrer Chori Chori (not to mention their final collaboration). The screwball comedy got remade in several Indian languages - even the 1991 movie Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (with Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt). The key themes the movie exhibits are the class and socio-economic differences between the two lead characters - along with love, freedom, poverty, unemployment, etcetera.
It would also be interesting to know that It Happened One Night was the first of the three movies to win the "Big Five" awards at the Oscars: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. The other two movies are One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and Silence of The Lambs (1991).
Below are the heroes of Capra:
Tumblr media
(1) Gary Cooper in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town
Tumblr media
(2) James Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Mr. Deeds and Mr. Smith grabbed my attention because of the themes discussed in the two (like corruption, misuse of power, beliefs in democracy, patriotism, etcetera). The most significant element is the depiction of the ideal 'American Hero' - which one can see in Gary Cooper and James Stewart, respectively. However, the hero is something that every nation wishes to have - including ours. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town got remade in Bengali (Raja-Saja of 1960 with Uttam Kumar) and Tamil (Nallathambi of 1949 with S. Krishnan). Whereas Mr. Smith Goes to Washington did not have an Indian adaptation.
However, Mr. Smith reminded me of how the English tried to suppress such movements during the freedom struggle. Scenes like 'young boys printing newspapers and citizens launching movements to prove a man's innocence & bureaucrats and politicians trying to stop it' remind us of such events. One must remember that it got released less than three years before Gandhiji launched the Quit India movement of 1942. Even after independence, now and then, we come across news headlines featuring similar happenings.
Tumblr media
(3) Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck in Meet John Doe
Tumblr media
(4) Amitabh Bachchan and Shabana Azmi in Main Azaad Hoon
Meet John Doe is about a "grassroots" political campaign created unwittingly by a newspaper columnist with the involvement of a hired homeless man and pursued by the paper's wealthy owner. The renowned Indian adaptation of the film is the Amitabh Bachchan-Shabana Azmi starrer Main Azaad Hoon (1989). It's one of the rarest movies where Bachchan has not fought the corrupt violently.
Although John Doe survives in the end, Azaad kills himself to stay true to the words of the reporter's fictional character. Azaad could have avoided it - but he did not do it so that the people's anger and urge to fight the corrupt system never cool down. Azaad also leaves a message for his supporters and appeals that Azaad should evolve in them. Capra claimed that he never found a satisfying ending for Meet John Doe. However, Main Azaad Hoon provides a finale that suits the main character's commonality and mythic stature.
Tumblr media
(5) Lionel Barrymore, James Stewart, Jean Arthur, and Edward Arnold in You Can’t Take It with You
And finally, You Can't Take It with You (for which he won his third Directing and second Best Picture Oscar) has a similar theme to It Happened One Night. It's a love story of a successful banker's son and his stenographer. In several Bollywood movies, we see romances between a rich boy and a poor girl (and vice versa) - but they are not like the romances between Capra's characters.
Tumblr media
(6) Donna Reed, Stewart, and Karolyn Grimes in It’s A Wonderful Life
This article would be incomplete without talking about It's a Wonderful Life (his first movie after leaving the Army) - which gives an important lesson about the significance and beauty of human life. It teaches us that our work can impact the people we come across - and those with friends are never lonely.
But that's not all!
We live in his world. It is the "Capra Universe" - where demons of society have surrounded us - and all we need is a "hero" to fight against them. Indeed, there are various Indian movies with similar themes (and distinct from Capra's plots). However, one can the difference only after watching them. Capra has taught us that you can be a rebel or an "angry young man" - without having a gun or a weapon to fight the system and beating up the bad guys. All you must do is to believe in yourself and the moral principles of society. He gave complex social and economic problems a human face - showing unemployment and vast concentrations of economic power.
Elaborating on the themes expressed in Capra's most famous works, two of the most reoccurring subjects are selflessness and a familial sense of community. That's why there is always strong support for the lead characters.
The only difference between Capra's movies and the Indian versions is the inclusion of songs - a standard Indian Cinema formula.
With themes depicted in them and the problems we see around us, Indians must watch some of Capra's movies. There have been directors who have remade them in the Indian context (and there will be in the future, no doubt). However, they won't have the exact authenticity as those of Capra's movies.
