This is the most ambitious fic I've written in a long time; my own take on The Fairy Isle, where Hilda finds herself lost in Fairy Country, and doesn't come home alone <3

Unpopular opinion but I actually wouldn’t be opposed to the bellkeeper being Hilda’s dad. He clearly has connections both physically and personality wise, and while an uncle or similar relative would also be likely, I wouldn’t be surprised if a father was what they were going for.

That said, I don’t particularly like the idea of him and Johanna getting back together if that’s the case. If they are meant to be a former couple, the way the Bellkeeper smiles at Hilda and Johanna before putting his hood up and walking away suggests that he has some reason for wanting to keep his distance despite still being fond of both.

On the child end, very little fiction shows divorce dynamics in which a child is involved, and even fewer slow divorce situations in which a child is actually able to maintain a relationship with both parents. Also, not a lot of fiction gets into the head of the child in question—most of the focus is on the parents’ conflict.

On the adult end, divorce is often depicted in a very non-nuanced manner. While it is very hard on all parties involved and it’s unfortunate when things don’t go well, we live in a society that hates the idea that someone’s First and One True Love could actually not be true love at all (fiction ESPECIALLY reflects this idea). What I would like to see (if they even go the dad route) is Johanna and the Bellkeeper reconnecting as friends, or at the very least exploring both of their perspectives as people rather than another “good person vs bad person” dynamic.

Hilda has dealt with complex feelings since early in the series, and it’s one of the few shows that I would fully trust to tackle something like divorce in a way that explores just how messy it is without outright denouncing it.

i'm mostly satisfied with hilda s3, even tho at times (early on in particular) it felt like they were writing PLOTS, not characters (ex. why does hilda want a "normal vacation". why are frida and david so reluctant to adventure with her, and frida in particular such an arbitrary contrarian instead of a voice of reason to hilda's reckless extremes. why are the sparrow scouts--friends to ALL SPIRITS--dunking on hilda for being...too friendly with spirits?? whatever.)

BUT. we got a bell keeper cameo and that means it was all worth it <3

Is the Bellkeeper part-fairy then? He also has blue streaks of hair. It makes sense that Phinium and Lydia aren't the only ones, and that there's actually a lot of fairy/human relationships that lead to half-fairy offspring.

If this is the case, then I wonder if he is slated to return to Fairy Country like Johanna was. Johanna's sickness could be a unique complication for half-fairies, maybe the two species aren't compatible after all and that's why she became sick. Maybe this was the inevitable fate for most half-fairies, which means that their parents would also trade their own lives for their children. It's a pretty freaky way to bring more people to Fairy Country and make them stay there. Maybe the Bellkeeper also experienced a similar case?

OK, that's a lot of "maybe's" and speculation, but it's an interesting thought, right?

003 Bellkeeper since I’m a bit curious to hear your thoughts on him as a character.

003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:

How I feel about this character: I want this man to be my dad. He's fun, he's cozy, and I like just the vibe of him; "gruff but kind paternal figure" is one of my favourite tropes. Also, I really like getting to meet someone boots-on-the-ground from the Safety Patrol.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: I do kind-of like the idea of him getting with Johanna, but not in the past; if it happens, I'd want it to be them bonding after The Old Bells over both caring about Hilda.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: I like him as found family with Hilda; the cabin scene in Old Bells is just really sweet, and it's nice that she gets another adult who understands her.

My unpopular opinion about this character: him being Hilda's father would have ruined him as a character. Also, big one: Kaisa's role in Mountain King should have been cut to make way for him. He had a planned appearance that got cut for time, and I would've much rather seen that (especially since the bells and the Patrol are very important in the movie) than a scene that made Kaisa out to be really unlikeable and kinda ruined the magic system :((

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: see above. Also I want to know his name XD

Favorite friendship for this character: I am 100% convinced him and Gerda are work buddies and I love the idea of them bonding :))

My crossover ship: I could see him with Erin's mum from The Secret of Black Rock, weirdly. Also, for platonic relationships, I have an AU where he adopts Misfortune Hernandez from Little Misfortune.

Time for the monthly drawing recap!

In this month:

- the bellkeeper and Hilda locate a lost herd of Centrosaurus just as the weather begins to worsen

- out of its territory, the spider frog must now fight for its life as a Giganotosaurus emerges from the forest. It's better for Johanna, Hilda, and Twig to get out of the way

- Hilda and Twig watch from the safety of a tree as a male Yutyrannus tries to court a female

- just before this Ophiacodon could strike, Frida grabs its tail to distract it, allowing David, who's been turned into a frog, to leap for safety

- Hilda and David watch as Frida tries to use the mind connection spell on a tame Liopleurodon, the latter cheering her on
