Am I (33, f) the asshole for bringing up a childhood story that made my cousin (36, f) uncomfortable in front of others?

Obviously based on the title alone, I'm an asshole, but I think I might be justified and would like a second opinion.... thanks!

So a little back story for context....I love my cousin. I truly do. We all grew up together so all of us are more like sisters than cousins. my cousin is beautiful, loud, and boisterous. She's loves to get attention and will try to get it anywhere she can. She posts on FB multiple times a day about her job, kids, or relationship. She's the golden child and she tries her hardest to live up to that reputation. She's the type of person who will get out of her car after a good song dancing and singing at the top of her lungs, especially if there are other people around to watch her, much to her kids dismay lol. She just knows how to have a good time and I honestly love that about her. I tend to be more reserved and relaxed, so I get a kick out of our differences.

But with that, she tends to be.... disingenuous... when someone steals the spot light from her, even when it's unintentional (which is the majority of the time, like they will just be sharing a story from work or something). She will act unbothered by it, but then her attitude will totally change. she will be fake nice and then bring up something that will make the person either embarrassed or want to retreat... then go right back to being content when the attention is back on her again. She does it so often, I kind of expect it to happen every time we hang out.

So here's the part where I may be the asshole... we're at a playzone for one of our other cousins kids' birthday and we're in a good handful sized group of adults chit chatting. A few people I've never met before but she knows them and we were all getting along just fine.

People tend to naturally be drawn to me because I try to be open and get along with most people, so I've been on the receiving end of my cousin's attitude a handful of times and this was one of those times lol. I'm typically not bothered by it because I'm a pretty confident person for the most part and I know my cousin well enough not to take it personally, but this time annoyed me because this is now the 5th time she's bringing this story up. It was like she didn't get the reaction out of me that she wanted the first 4 times, so now she really needed to land it this time. So I gave her a reaction....

A few minutes before I was sharing a story that the others were impressed by, I guess, but we moved on from it and I didn't think any more of it. Then while we were all talking, I believe I excused myself because I let out a small burp. So she goes, loudly so the group can hear, "do you remember when you were 6 and you were crying to your dad because your butt was itchy and you wanted him to scratch it? I don't know why, but your burp reminded me of that". So I'm like "ok? So?" Kids cry for stupid shit all the time and I was a stupid kid lmao. So I brushed it off but she decided to keep pushing it! And was like "yeah you were crying because you didn't want to scratch your ass and you sat there crying until it went away"

I was and still am unbothered by the story she brought up but I was more than a bit annoyed that she wouldnt let it go, so without much thinking I said "no I don't remember that as clearly as you do.... But I do remember my sister slapping the fuck out of you for saying something racist (we're half Asian) and out of pocket. Then you cried to your mama then she told your mom that you were lucky that all you got was a slap to the face... do you remember that?" She went ghost white, looked around the group and said "family is funny like that, huh?"

So am I the asshole for bringing up a story that made my cousin uncomfortable?

Sebardagni Headcanon/AU Idea #001 - Post-Apocalyptic Sickfic AU

It’s no secret the last 7 months or so have not been great for me, and I haven’t been able to write for various reasons, since my health has been bad.

I’m hoping that the second half of 2024 will show some improvement but in the time being I’ve been trying to imagine my fave trio: Sebardagni in various sickfic scenarios

Like I had one in mind that’s not well formulated bc my brain is not working well enough for more than vague shapes of ideas, but it’s post-apocalyptic.

I don’t like that genre generally because as a chronically ill disabled person, I know how absolutely fucked I would be if society collapsed.

However, one of my fave independent novels I ever read featured this concept, and one of the characters had a chronic lung disease so not having regular access to medicine made his life much harder, and put enormous strain on his husband and family.

So I imagined a scenario in which Sebastian, Agni, and Bard have settled in a remote mountain cabin because it’s removed from some of the dangers of the cities, the air is cleaner for Sebastian to breathe a little easier, and there is plenty of food and resources.

But the problem is that they really should move on, but they can’t travel, not with Sebastian sick, and they’re running out of places to scavenge for medicine. One of them always has to stay behind with Sebastian, so only one can go out at a time.

Bard had been increasingly having to go away for days or even weeks at a stretch, going farther and farther from their home base in an attempt to find medicine for Sebastian and other supplies they can’t make or grow themselves.

It makes Sebastian guilty and anxious that one day Bard won’t come back and it’ll be his fault, and it frustrates him that he can’t help more, or that his partners have to sacrifice so much for him. More than once he’s told them to leave him behind, but they both insist they’d rather die with him than abandon him.

I imagined a particular scene where Sebastian’s health has taken a sharp downturn while Agni has been waiting for Bard to return, and it’s getting to be long enough he’s worried maybe this will be the day Bard never comes home.

But he does, all smiles. He didn’t find medicine, at least not what they’d hoped to find, but he did find a treasure trove of things that were under a collapsed shelf in an asian market a few towns over.

Matcha powder, and a lot of it.

Matcha is highly caffeinated, and it’s related to another molecule that’s often used to treat asthma and other lung conditions, because it helps open the airways. Drinking a lot of caffeine can thus help your breathing a little bit. It’s not medicine, but it definitely helps in a pinch.

I imagine Agni grows what he can for Sebastian, various herbs and plants like marijuana that can help him, and despite the world ending and the challenges of their new lives, ultimately they’re happy.

I think it could be a really lovely story, but I doubt I’ll ever be able to write it.

I don’t ship things. But I’m getting pissed as hell when I see people saying that Huntlow was forced.

Like. No? Sure it had less build up than Amity and Luz but that’s just because Luz is the main character. Not to mention the show was being cancelled and they literally had less time to do it all. Rant under the cut.

I personally could not give a shit if Hunter and Willow became an item or just stayed friends. That show already has strong friendships like Luz, Gus, Willow friendship and Gus and Hunter and etc. and I never need more romance. But as far as writing romance into the plot the Owl House did a perfectly fine job with Willow and Hunter.

When they first meet, Willow, who has been working hard on her own self confidence, basically corners Hunter and forces him to do something fun with kids his own age.

This is where we see the parallels to them, because they’ve both struggled with performance and rejection. They’ve both been called “half a witch” and Hunter is way further back on the road to acceptance.

Hunter let’s them all go, and he addresses Willow specifically.

Then we have just small stuff. Hunter going out of his way to save Willow during a fight, when Hunter gets filled with bad memories while saving Gus one of them is when he made Willow upset. Hunters memory of that one meeting with Willow is so attuned to her he knows fake willow is an illusion immediately. When Willow thinks Hunter’s been captured she’s the first one to race to the airship and angrily starts snapping about how do you turn it on. Once they realize it’s Luz who is actually captured, Amity is the one snapping about going faster, meanwhile Willow is sitting in the back with King. There’s a clear parallel there.

And then season three happens. Hunter wears a stupid outfit and Willow fucking loves it. She legit tells him to save it for later and then winks at him, in which he blushes hard. I didn’t bring up any blushing before this, bc as far as I’m concerned this is the only one that matters. Then episode two is the first time we see Willow being the one who’s about to lose it. Bc she’s had such an excellent character arc so far that she’s become this capable and calm headed leader. And Hunter hears her refer to herself as half a witch. And it literally drives him to tears.

Look. I am literally the last person who would say “they can’t be platonic look how much they mean to each other” bc I literally want to kill people who say that. But as far as storytelling goes they did their due diligence with Hunter and Willow. They put in the work just fine. Especially with the half a witch parallel. With limited episodes where neither of them are a main character they gave us plenty of hints about what’s coming while also letting us see Hunter’s friendship with Gus as being just as important of a relationship!

I don’t know if people are confused at the m/f ship that doesn’t bow to any gender roles or common straight couple troupes or… they’re upset that it’s a m/f ship in general? I mean we have no proof they’re both straight and even if they are who cares it’s still a gay show. With huntlow that makes two straight couples, one of whom is getting a nasty divorce. So.

Or maybe people are upset that the cute little elf boy with depression fell for the plus sized Asian girl before she even really noticed him? Although I shouldn’t just assume the worst.

Like. To put it another way. If I saw it coming, the aroace who legit is surprised by almost every bit of romance in media, then it was not out of nowhere. It’s a legit relationship they spent time on, and if you were blindsided by it maybe there’s some underlying reason why you didn’t expect them to be in a relationship?

he knows how you feel; he knows that you’d fill papyruses and etch the most elaborate stories and pictures of his perfection on the largest hieroglyphs. he insists he’d do the same, but when you step back to really consider how you measure up to him, you feel lackluster, brittle, and stinky like sulfur.

you’d never tell him that, of course. you avoid his talking-to’s like the plague—mostly because they never really changed your mind. but you also just really hated disappointing him; he’d frown, and his eyebrows would furrow and make the cutest little wrinkles that wouldn’t let you take him seriously.

however, you didn’t always enjoy his perfection. every time you accomplished something, you felt it was dull compared to the trophies and framed degrees lining the walls of his “office” (he watches game film and crazy rich asians on loop—nothing too fancy.)

when you had decided to go to college and pursue higher education, you had been proud of your perseverance through every crappy professor and 8am class. throughout sleepless nights, coffee jitters, depression, anxiety, hours of studying, you were able to graduate with an ample gpa and earn your degree.

despite everything, you weren’t nearly as excited when you walked the stage. you moved your tassel half-heartedly, suddenly feeling like the past four years weren’t as hard as you’d made them out to be.

following the ceremony, sakusa took you out to a fancy restaurant, raving about how proud he was of you and how he knew you could do it.

his words made you smile, but pain seared through your heart. you couldn’t understand why you couldn’t appreciate your work, your accomplishments—every minute and second spent working towards something huge.

you looked down at your drink, studying the ice as a startling thought ran through your mind.

maybe you didn’t deserve it.

you didn’t really do anything. you just turned in assignments on time and studied here and there. anyone can do that.

your chest tightened, a dull realization encapsulating you. you’re not special. sakusa has accomplished so much more and doesn’t dwell in it, so why should you?

“hey,” sakusa reached his hand across the table for yours, “i’m extremely proud of you.”

your eyes softened, but only momentarily, “it’s not that big a deal, kiyo. just uh, just a stepping stone.” you squeezed his hand, wanting nothing more than to rid of this feeling in your heart.

“not a big deal? just making it to graduation is a big deal. i’ve seen the years of stress you’ve had to endure.” his eyes turned stern, giving you that talking-to look, “no one deserves this more than you.”

you bit down on your bottom lip to keep it from quivering, “that’s not true.”

“what’s wrong? talk to me.”

you sighed, looking down at the silky red table cloth, “nothing. i just.. i don’t,” you stammered, searching for the words while simultaneously trying to keep your eyes dry, “i’m just not as.. proud as i thought i would be.”

both of his hands now covered yours, eyes laser focused on you. the only thing that mattered to him in the entire world to him was you.

“why?”

you suck in a breath, using your free hand to wipe at your waterline, “i don’t know.” you whisper, “i just don’t.. feel like i deserve it. i don’t see the hard work that led me here. not like you.”

“like me?” he quirked a brow, “baby, look at me.”

you finally met his eyes, tears threatening to spill over.

“you worked so, so hard for this. and maybe it felt anti-climatic, but you earned it. you have every reason to be proud and excited right now.” his voice never wavered, and he spoke as if he’d never been more sure of anything in his life, “don’t compare yourself to anyone. you’re just as worthy of success as myself and anyone else here. my trophies? those are all thanks to a team effort. but you? your degree? you did that, all on your own. and that should mean something to you. because it definitely means something to me; it means that i have the smartest, most hardworking partner i could’ve asked for.”

your eyes were wide, unblinking. you didn’t even notice the tears falling down your cheeks until sakusa was wiping them away. you turned your face to kiss his palm, resting your hand on his forearm.

“i guess we both got pretty lucky, huh?”

Galios making splinter seem like the abusive parent was an odd favorite line because like yeah you don’t like it when someone calls your parent abusive but it also opens the can of worms that no matter how much I hate draxum he’s still a better parent than splinter in a way

I know that physical abuse being frequent in Asian parenting cultures is somewhat of a stereotype, and Japan at least recently outlawed corporal punishment altogether, so I do try to be mindful about not playing into stereotypes. But at the same time, Splinter is shown to physically discipline them. It's played for laughs in the show, but still-he never does it to April, so he's well aware that he shouldn't be hitting other people's kids.

And I also have to factor in, Splinter's older than the average parent of teenagers. I've been ballparking his DOB somewhere around 1960-65, which would make him around sixty now, so he was raised in the 60s and 70s. And raised by his grandfather, no less, who would have been born around 1920 at the latest. Grandpa Sho would have grown up in pre-WWII Japan, in a relatively rural area in a very traditional family, and was probably more than a little resistant to modernization. He definitely used physical discipline while raising his daughter and then his grandson, because That Is The Way To Rear Children. That doesn't mean he was a bad father or anything-especially when you factor in the generational trauma and Hamato Family Fear-Mongering stuff, like, he'd been told his entire life that if he and his descendants didn't unquestionably carry out their 'duties' then the world would literally end. This man watched his daughter die to somehow protect the world from the Shredder, and he never questioned that. He wouldn't have shied away from physical discipline.

I talked about this a little bit with some people in the last chapter, but the thing with Splinter using the same methods on his sons-even if he objected to the way his grandfather disciplined him, even if he never wanted to hurt his own sons, he probably didn't know what else to do. Yoshi was an only child, as was Atsuko, and it doesn't sound like he had a relationship with his bio father or any half-siblings or cousins he might have had through him. Lou was partying and fucking and doing drugs in Hollywood from early adulthood to his mid-thirties, when Big Mama abducted him for the Nexus. He never wanted kids, never planned on them or thought about how he'd parent. He has no experience with children. No other parents or pediatricians to answer his questions, no resources, can't even drop them off with a babysitter to get an hour to himself.

Not to even mention that his kids are genetically enhanced super soldiers and he has to worry about shit that no other parent would. Like, ideally yes you would sit down with your toddler and explain to him that he needs to be careful when playing with his little brothers. Splinter has no idea how to phrase that in a way a toddler could understand. He's gotten three hours of sleep in the last week, is wondering where he's going to get more food because he has enough for exactly two more meals if he doesn't eat himself, one of his other kids is already crying for him and he still has to patch where Raph put Leo through the drywall, and if the next time Raph does that he's just a little more forceful, or if he does it with Donnie-if he doesn't stop this now, one of his kids could end up getting killed.

So he hits him. He hates it, he cries afterwards, but Raph gets the message.

I wrote this up a little while ago but never actually posted it, and with everything going on right now, I think I probably should anyway.

It's pretty absurd to me how so many people view RWBY as a queer and feminist story and anyone who dislikes the way it writes it's male characters is a misogynist, but when you actually bother to look at it, you see that the male characters it tends to demonize are only the male characters that our real-world society has already othered.

James Ironwood has extensive prosthetics and an atypical body and is often described as literally being "half robot" and Adam Taurus is an in-universe minority who was permanently blinded and disfigured by one of his oppressors and is literally an animal person. Jaune Arc, is a white, blue eyed, blonde haired, heavily coded as straight and cis young man. He is the textbook idea of a young male hero in a coming of age story, and he is essentially the show's real main character.

The male characters in RWBY who tend to be demonized and painted as villains and monsters, are people who are already not accepted by the status quo. Adam and Ironwood are the Other. Jaune is the young Hollywood hero.

In fact, let's do a little bit of lightning round in how much RWBY holds up ideals about how the Other should be treated.

Jacques Schnee is a white capitalist abuser who subjugates faunus and treats his family like shit. Not only is he considered basically not an actual threat in the Atlas Arc, (that would be Arthur Watts, the brown man, and James Ironwood, the disabled PSTD having Asian man) but he's actually a gold digger who married into the family fortune. He is literally the Other to the Schnee family and "doesn't belong there" among the legitimately lebensborn looking German coded Nicholas "colonizer" Schnee and his neglectful drunk daughter. They even gave this man black hair that he dyed white to really rub in how not pure blooded he is.

Arthur Watts and Hazel Reinhart are clearly darker skinned characters and are a part of Salem's cabal. Hazel Reinhart, whether the writers intended this or not, is an idiot who couldn't accept his sister making her own decisions in life and chose to work with her murderer to kill that murderer's abuse victim. Arthur Watts is a remorseless terrorist who has no qualms with rigging elections or taking away the bodily autonomy of young white girls.

Tyrion Callows is clearly some form of mentally ill and is an in-universe minority with a racial trait (that seems like it would be pretty heavily stigmatized if I'm being honest) that gets forcibly amputated by someone who is relatively more privileged than him in his society and later replaced with a prosthetic, making him physically disabled as well.

Mercury Black is an abuse survivor who suffered physical abuse so horrible he had to get his legs amputated.

Anyone else sensing kind of a theme here?

Terrible Fic Ideas #60: The Old Guard, but make it Percy Jackson

I was not intending on falling headfirst into another fandom. Nor was I intending to come up with another crazy PJO crossover that somehow manages not to be crack, but I discovered The Old Guard last weekend and this is the end result.

Or: What if, post-movie, the Guard decided to lay low at the one place Merrick's people could never find them: Camp Half-Blood?

Bear with me:

For most of history, "the cradle of western civilization" has been in Europe, as befitting a throughly European idea. But Europe is a big place - and even bigger when you don't have modern transportation to fall back on. A common rule of thumb for medieval travel goes something like 1 day sailing = 7 days on horseback = 21 days walking.

Plus sending satyrs to scope out likely schools is a lovely idea in an era with compulsory public education, but less likely to work in an era where even universities are few on the ground.

All that being said, I imagine it would have been ridiculously easy for demigods to slip through the cracks and never make their way to CHB or CJ, not once suspecting they were anything other than fully human. This is especially true of demigods without spectacular active powers like creating hurricanes or summoning the dead.

As there's no canonical reason why the members of the Old Guard are immortal, there's no reason they can't be demigods who slipped through the cracks, died, and became immortal because of their divine ancestry. It's a rare quirk of genetics that shows up only in 1 in a 10,000 demigods, most often in those who lack any active powers and show only the passive traits of their divine parent - and, therefore, have no idea that they're demigods at all until much, much later in the game.

For the purposes of this fic: Quỳnh and Lykon are descended from southeast asian and subsaharan pantheons of which modern historians have only limited knowledge. Andy is the daughter of Dyḗus, the PIE sky god considered to be equivalent to Zeus, and thus is something like Zeus' stepdaughter. Nicky is the only child of Neptune born in the last two millennia, Joe the son of Apollo in his Greek incarnation, and Nile the daughter of Mars. I went back and forth for possible divine parents for Booker, but ultimately decided to make him a son of Dionysus in this AU. None of them exhibit anything that might be called a power, but have certain talents and personality traits that mark them distinctly as of divine descent.

Just imagine it:

Following Merrick, the Guard needs to lay low. They have many safe houses but no way of knowing how many are compromised. In the end, they decide to go to the one place Merrick can be assured not to find them: Camp Half-Blood.

They get halfway to Ramsgate before realizing the UK probably no longer counts as "the cradle of Western civilization". With a little bit of divine intervention, they find their way to Long Island.

CHB is not unused to people showing up bloody on their doorstep, but most campers have never seen one adult demigod, let alone five. The fact that two of them are Roman and one predates Zeus himself is startling, as I picture this happening in the summer immediately after TLO, before Hera kidnaps Percy.

There's some tension, partly because of the Greek/Roman thing, partly because some campers are bitter these well-trained adults didn't show up to help during the Battle of the Labyrinth/Battle of Manhattan. (The answer - that they just didn't know Kronos was rising - doesn't help much, but the masterclasses they give on various fighting techniques do.)

Percy spends more time at CHB during the next few months than he ever has - after all, who knows when he'll next get to see a non-monstrous half-brother? Nicky may be the son of his father's Roman incarnation - the only one born since Sextus Pompeius to hear him tell it - but he's still family. An ideal big brother really. This does not keep Percy from being kidnapped or the events of HOO from happening, but it does mean there are more people keeping an eye out for him, and when the Argo II runs into trouble in Europe a few people they can call for backup.

But otherwise I have very little plot for this and a lot of scenes of a long few months where CHB and the Guard interact, but then largely go their separate ways until the kids need to phone a friend. This includes: 1) Booker spending a lot of time with his father and remaining half-brother, which gives him both family and the therapist he needs. It's not a magical fix-all, but it starts the path of healing; 2) Nile freaking out over the demigod thing as well as the immortality, but finds comfort in her Ares half-siblings, and generally realizing that while she may have lost her mortal family she never has to be alone, even if she decides being a member of an immortal army isn't for her; 3) Andy teaching all the children all the weapons, because as much as he hates baby demigods having to fight she'd rather teach them how to survive than turn a blind eye to it; and 4) Percy worrying Nicky and Joe are camping out in a cave on the edge of camp because they've been made to feel unwelcome because of the Roman/gay/immortal thing, only to turn permanently red after they kindly explain to him why two adults in a loving relationship might want space for themselves after a traumatic event.

Bonuses include: 1) At least one long digression on how one goes from killing each other multiple times outside the gates of Jerusalem to immortal husbands who are still in the honeymoon stage after 97 decades. This should include a lot of digression on what it takes to have a healthy relationship of any sort, among other related subjects, and hopefully highlight the line between healthy desire to spend one's lives together and unhealthy codependence enough so that MoA's judo throw is avoided; 2) The drama of at least one divine parent beyond Dionysus appearing on scene at some point. Extra bonus points if it's Neptune, who honestly hasn't realized he fathered a demigod child in the last two thousand years. Extra extra bonus points if it's curmudgeonly victorian fisherman Neptune; and 3) Percy upon finding out about Quỳnh immediately offering to go out to Dogger Bank and ask the marine life about a woman in an iron coffin.

And that's it really - not a lot of plot, just a lot of disconnected scenes. As always, feel free to adopt this bun, just link back if you do anything with it.

The costumes!!!!!!

When Sokka said "Before you kill someone", I expected at least a "Sokka!".

So. There's a lot of stuff that they removed and added that I didn't like- less 'added', and more 'rushed'. Things that should've built up gradually, that could've been revealed in little bits were just immediately shown to us- my example here is Azula. When I first saw Azula, she was terrifying, her and her group were both my dream group and incited fear and awe in younger me, I didn't think she was insecure, I didn't think she was scared, she was practically the damn terminator with that epic episode of tracking the gaang slowly but steadily and driving them to exhaustion.

Is she actually insecure and batshit insane and scared? Yes. Was that what you were supposed to be able to tell with a single glance? No.

At first I thought maybe I was just biased with Katara, but I also feel like a lot of stuff they did with Azula was just.....

They did Sokka good, which was actually who I was concerned about the most. Zuko- I really love his portrayal. My moments of doubt with Aang are actually closely tied with Katara, which makes sense because hello, their friendship and bond was very important to the whole thing. Would've been a wonderful contrast to his Past bond with Gyatso and his Future bond with Katara.

I do think it's good.

Though you would probably get along super well with all the brothers, I think you would find your time around Belphie to be more grounding than the others' chaotic shenanigans. I think Belphie would be there to help you break out of the mindset that you have to be the perfect, daughter, friend or student reminding you it's more than okay to just be yourself, take a break and let yourself mentally and emotionally recharge. Hey!! I loved your Rinsagi metas and posts. FINALLY someone in the fandom who doesn't infantilize Isagi and sees canon him. Yes Isagi is nice but not like.. nanase level friendly and nice. He's polite but a lil withdrawn and appreciates people's talents but absolutely will not let anyone walk over him. Also,exactly what u said, sadist Dom. Yes please.

And Rin, so many people reduce him to this one-dimensional character who's issues people treat like a joke. When that's not the case? Bachira at least knows his prblms, Rin has no idea at all. Like how horrible does your repression and mental state have to be that the guy that is literally suicidal tells you that you're in a worse place than him. Rin gives off high key depressed vibes.

It's a lot like Post WC kunigami which draws...interesting parallels esp when you look at pre WC kunigami and at how Rin seems a lot happier before the fight. I saw someone make that comparison.

What do you think? How do you think Rin would've been like if Sae had actually bothered explaining instead of what we got?

Also, any opinions on the Itoshi parents? We've only seen half their faces and nothing from them abt their kids's relationship. I mean, it kinda bothers me how we've seen the views of Isagi, Bachira, Chigiri, even Hiori's parents when he's not a main character, Yet we got no input from the Itoshis. Do they just not notice? Are they a bit neglectful esp since they let a 13 yr old Sae go to another country alone? Do they let their kids do whatever they want including fighting for a year? Who knows? I'll love to know your thoughts tho.

Isagi stans, please rise up and help characterise him properly lmao

Stupid long response under the cut, as always.

Rant about my issues with the general fandom characterisation about Isagi. Sorry anon if this isn't what you wanted, I have a lot of Thoughts and Salt where Isagi is concerned, and I am Fandom Old who is growing incredibly sad with how divisive current fandom is over a whole host of things. Skip to Itoshi if you don't wanna read about Isagi + fandom musings. Skip to parents if you wanna read about my thoughts on the family dynamics.

Isagi is, for better or worse, the stock shonen MC. He's enough of a regular guy for the target readers, which are teenage boys, to identify with. As he's the MC, the story overall serves to validate and support him, so long as he fits the themes the author is working on, which for Blue Lock, is the concept of being the best at what you're doing, while also bringing out the best in others, and then working together successfully to achieve goals (i.e. the World Cup).

But, Kaneshiro-sensei's also a strategic writer. Isagi, because he's such a bland self-insert for the most part, combined with how he has a very weird form of Power of Heart, has wound up being an especially attractive character for those who like harem, or reverse-harem series. Which then, for better or worse, brings all the fujoshi fangirls around (the curse of so many attractive characters). But most especially the fujoshi fangirls who are a fan of all x MC ships. I am emphasizing all x MC here, because east Asian/gen Asian fandom, have grown incredibly restrictive and rigid about top x bottom dynamics, which is a whole host of other things and issues to talk about.

Look up any popular shonen jump title, you'll find that these shippers generally have the same tastes, and move around the same fandom circles. You'll usually find them shipping all x MC ships, from Izuku to Tanjirou to Yuuji to Naruto etc. Overall, how they characterise them never deviates all that much. It's the nice, 'innocent', naive, guy who is a bit of a pushover, and who has all the other hot characters wanting to get in their pants. That's where Isagi falls into as well, for these shippers. The more thorny and less 'nice guy' parts of his characterisation gets sanded down, though YMMV whether this is a skill issue by fandom or simply a cultural readership interpretation difference altogether.

On the Itoshi bros:

Yep, Rin has a lot of repression issues. I wouldn't go so far as to say that Rin has no idea at all about his issues (how else would he pick out Bachira's loneliness so quickly lol, also there's some hints from official guidebook), but he definitely lacks self-awareness. I also agree that he and Nagi seem to be on different areas at the spectrum of depression (Nagi being apathetic, Rin being hostile).

If there's anything to parallel Rin and Kunigami, I'd say that it's the 'loss of a dream' and 'loss of companions'. In the manga proper, Rin does seem happier before the fight with Sae, like how Kunigami looked happier pre-WC. However, the light novel shows that Rin was already repressing both himself and his style of football to imitate Sae long before then due to external pressures by his teammates and coach, and even more severely than Isagi, who also didn't have much of a relationship with his own teammates from Ichinan.

If Sae had tried to explain more than that one line about 'the world being vast', they wouldn't have such a strained relationship right now, honestly. While I don't think that Rin would have fully understood what Sae was trying to say because he lacked the experience and perspective, I do think he would have been more supportive, which would have been better overall, for the both of them. They were both idiots that night, lmao, though I do view Sae as having been punished by the narrative when he pushed his dream onto Rin.

About the Itoshi parents:

We know that Rin and Sae presumably used to share a room and a double bed as kids (albeit a fairly spacious one, from the looks of it), which makes me think that they're more likely to be middle class than upper class. Young Rin also accompanied Sae to his soccer practice games, rather than going off for other classes like say, art, which implies that his parents might not have been able to afford it. Sae also walked home with Rin, which further implies that they're parents are busy, though its more of a norm in JP. Possibly a double income household, to fund Sae, and later, Rin's coaching fees and time with the youth football squad. Also a household that seems to have no qualms about Sae, and later, Rin's rudeness and hostility, although they may tone it down around their parents. Sae must have picked his attitude up from somewhere.

I'm reluctant to call the Itoshi parents sending Sae to Madrid at 13 as intentionally neglectful, because there are cultural nuances there. I think the best parallel I can draw is parents from less-developed nations sending their children overseas from an early age to secure eventual permanent residency and establish a life in a more developed nation. Sometimes, home just isn’t good enough. And this is one of Blue Lock’s main story themes: that Japan’s football, as it is, isn’t good enough. They have neither the organizational structure, infrastructure, nor support to get the World Cup that Sae, Anri and possibly Ego, covets.

Sae's dream, and talent, is in football. He's been scouted by perhaps the most successful team in the Blue Lock world, with a world-class program for youths, and has been given the best chance possible, for any kid in his shoes, to fulfill his dream to be the best striker in the world. He's being sponsored, and he also left with a manager who would presumably, help take care of him whilst he was there. Sae isn't going there like say, Ashito from Aoi Ashi, who needed to go through a trial to even be considered for acceptance into the youth squad. He's going there as the equivalent of a golden scholarship student scouted for a potential future work placement, with the likely backing of the JFA.

What alternatives could his parents offer him if he stayed in Japan? His own speech to Sendou pre-blue lock vs U20 match encapsulates what could have been for him (Sendou is very much a foil to Sae, especially now that we know they're both redheads lmao). Being the best in Japan, a middle-of-the-road striker in the world, retiring with an average, albeit decent life. Sae's too egoistic, too talented, too greedy to be content with a life like that. I wouldn't be surprised if Sae had also begged his parents hard to let him go, since it's pretty much all he wanted as a kid.

That's without even taking into account the other problems his parents would face if they immigrated with Sae. How to take care of Rin and his education there, for starters. Rent and housing, finding jobs in Madrid where they likely can't speak the language, and face discrimination.

I think we don't get their parents faces because Rin and Sae's story, and their relationship with their parents, are simply emotionally distant. I don't think they have much parental control over Rin or Sae either.  Sae's been more or less looking after himself/being taken care of by Real Madrid + his manager in Spain since 13, and Rin has been strongly implied to be in much the same shoes since Sae left, to a lesser extent. I doubt they know the more minute details about Rin and Sae’s school life and team experience, both within and out of Japan. I even doubt that they know that Rin and Sae had a fight, honestly, though I can also see them being the kind of parents who will let their kids sort things out between themselves.

Overall: Itoshi parents takes care of them physically (buys them material things, makes sure they have a home to stay in, have a physical caretaker in their place), but emotionally? Rin and Sae seem to be pretty much left on their own. No wonder their relationship with each other broke down, and what little relationships they have with others seem like such a convoluted mess.

Aeon identical twin girls

The older one (by 15 mins) has Ada's personality & the younger one has Leon's.

Ada loves dressing them up in matching outfits. Sometimes red dresses, other times, mini leather jackets.

Leon loves taking afternoon naps with both his baby girls on his chest.

leon loves sleeping in the middle of the day with the twins, but also taking care of them and letting ada nap. they take shifts during the night, with leon taking the brunt of it since ada needs more sleep than him anyways. he also is more likely to get up in the middle of the night to help with the girls.

i think about them wanting to maybe homeschool the girls but also maybe wanting them to have the school experience. like ada would be afraid but would want them to be socialized and have the school experience that she (probably never had), and leon would also want them to go to school and have the most normal life they could have

i still feel like he would refuse dangerous jobs when ada get pregnants with the girls. both of them would never work a dangerous job again after they have the girls.

leon would have the girls with him whenever he can, and also because he knows how hard pregnancy can be and especially since i headcanon that ada would already be in her 40s by the time that they have the girls, that it would stress them out a bit.

i also headcanon that leon would be in his 40s by the time the girls are toddlers so at that point the people at the DSO would just be like HE HAD KIDS??? WITH WHO??? (also because maybe they never saw him with a wedding ring)

or maybe he'd hide his wedding ring or not even wear them. (i don't really know how i feel about them getting married tbh. i feel like leon would want to, and ada wouldn't care much. leon can't ask ada's father for her hand in marriage or anything.. but i feel like the principle of it would matter to leon. i also see them doing a double proposal or ada proposing to leon very casually since she knows that he would maybe not ask her)

I could just say "his vibes" and that's still pretty true because there's something about him that rubs me the wrong way. I've listed a few things out here, under the cut, because it got longer than I thought it would be.

It's a combination of a few things.

His treatment of women. He's the "flirty player guy", okay, I get that. But there are ways to do that other than making him be creepy to almost every woman he meets. Mistreatment of Jack. Jack entered the show at around the time I started paying more attention to what was going on in the fandom so I know that Dean treated Jack (a child, and Castiel's son) like SHIT even when he showed no signs of being even a tiny bit bad and he was not called out on this and as far as I know never apologized for it. I do NOT approve.

This one isn't him specifically but more the fandom woobifying Dean. no matter what he does, no matter how shitty he acts, I still see hordes of posts where fans will be "Dean my baby!" and not even in a "poor little meow meow" way where it's like "yeah i know he's a terrible person lol i still like him though". Despite the two points above, "Feminist Dean Winchester" and "Dean Winchester is Jack Kline's Dad" are still very popular headcanons/tags used by the fandom. (the dad one I could understand, maybe. the feminist one? no.)

the whole "Dean tricks Sam into accepting an angel into his body to save his life and then lies about it until Sam finds out and then never apologizes for it and doesn't realize why Sam might have issues with being possessed without his knowledge and has every reason to be mad about it" plotline.

this one also isn't on him specifically but it's hella annoying to be even fandom adjacent to the SPN fandom (as I am) and care about anyone other than Dean or any ship other than Destiel. the tags are flooded with both of them. Combined with point number 3, if you're already not liking the vibes of a character and they keep being shoved in your face, it's going to turn you off of them eventually. That's half the reason I filtered both tags, besides my general indifference/dislike.

Still has Yanfei on the team, expect you're now DPS.

Literally took him only 5 minutes to level you to 90, hell he was glad he won't spend hours grinding for your ascension materials, he already had them STOCKED.

He's not that good at dodging please help him.

Always has a healer or a shielder in his team with you, kinda hates it hearing your fallen line and death.

Sometimes it be like that, but he actually built you well. Tries to get your constellations on your rerun, and ended up with a C1 (Y/N) ♡

At least he got one, i'll give him that. Does like, 10K damage with you. Trey helped him choose the right artifacts.

Knows decent about it but honestly once tried to give Kaeya Diluc's artifacts. Please don't let him play alone.

Always struggled with regisvines as a noob player, but now that he got you with him he'll never die.

Like omg you do more damage than any asian mother's slipper hitting your face. Went to spiral abyss on floor 10, obliterated every enemy almost in seconds with you.

Please i headcannon him to always feed you even if your health bar is more than half full. I love it.

Maybe sometimes stops moving just to hear your idle/chat voice lines. He'd be like "Aw ♡ you're nice". Then proceed to keep admiring your design like Mihoyo given a 5 star rating.

Once went Co-op with Cater just as he finished doing commissions and just went feral when he saw you–

Deuce Spade:

The one who goes to your lines in the menu and listens to everyone single one including your battle voice lines. Only a legend like him wouldn't get lazy listening to it all...

Doesn't have your own weapon, but he gave you a pretty good 4 star weapon anyway. More decent than Ace.

Is very troubled with certain bosses but since you're now his main life made everything for him so much easier.

Came back immediately and maxed you out to 90.

Doesn't have any of your constellations but pretty fine for him to have a C6 Qiqi.

I can feel his pain of gacha luck but wowie...you love him.

And so you came home. Pairs you up in a team with the two best Genshin characters he ships you with + a healer LMAO.

You may be doing 900 dmg but he has never been more proud of himself to actually be doing damage. Until he found out he forgot to level your talents and artifacts...Ace laughed at him so much.

Maxed out right artifacts and triple crowned. Don't ask. The only C6 he doesn't have is Kaeya, Lisa and Amber. Look even he has his own hardships. C2 Kaeya though.

Insanely good at patterns and dodging.

One-faces La Signora regularly with no problems. Even more so he loves using you for looking hot while fighting.

His room is half-filled with (Y/N) posters, plushies, figurines, etc. you name it. Never forgets daily commissions and uses only you because he's a gamer God lol.

Has Diluc, Fischl, Barbara & Jean's other skins. And if you also have one he'll be the 3rd to have it (Azul & Vil yknow)...

Never underestimate an otaku and pro gamer.

Probably plays challenges with Lilia on a live stream like who can kill Raiden the fastest, who can kill a cryo resgisvine without breaking the corrolla, stuff like that...

It always ends so intense that fans are going crazy smh.

Usually watches instead of plays, but Idia encouraged him to play so both could have fun.

Amused when he pulled a 5 star which was you– like man didn't even try for the standard banner.

Wants to see if he'll get a limited character and he did. Probably has like three or four 5 star characters overall.

Does 5K damage, but that's good enough for him he says.

Probably the only TWST character that is most invested and interested in the Genshin lore. Maybe even your backstory, who knows.

Pulled you on your rerun instead because he used all his primos for Zhongli. Used to main him too, always gets reminded of Malleus for some reason. Anyone else?

Doesn't even try. Can build you with his eyes closed, like do not even bLiNk and you're probably clashing dmg with Idia–

Which is why the streams are always so fun.

Co-op weekend nights with Diasomnia, in his world. He's at AR 60 and the others are probably around 50.

Will take a simple selfie with you admiring your character during the archon quest. If some epic cutscene happens he'll be very amused.

Because clips from The Owl House season 3 came out, I wanna talk about how important Luz as a character is for me because holy SHIT.

I’m half Dominican and half Thai. Growing up, I never really saw rep for either specific ethnicities— all Latino and/or Hispanic rep I saw was usually Mexican or unspecified, and all Asian rep was usually Chinese, Japanese, or unspecified. The only rep I would be able to find for one of my specific ethnicities was watching Thai dramas with my dad’s old family friends (which, when you’re a kid, how exactly is that appealing?)

Luz Noceda came into my life in May of 2020, and I remember that because my mom and I were visiting my abuela in New Jersey. She had a heart thing going on, so we had to stay up in Jersey for a few days to make sure she was okay— while we were there, I decided to get into The Owl House.

I had already heard a few things that piqued my interest, and for the most part? The reason I got into it was Luz, a bisexual, Dominican-American, canonically neurodivergent teenager just like I was (I have moderate to severe ADHD and a few friends have speculated that I might be autistic, I prefer not to think about it because I don’t feel like having another identity crisis).

And then I watched the show, and she was more like me than I ever could’ve thought. We both have that foot stompy stim where you just sort of run in place a little bit, we both have a tendency to isolate ourselves when we’re upset, try to solve everyone else’s problems first, find comfort in fantasy and magic. All that on top of her being canonically Dominican and bi?

Luz Noceda made me feel more seen than any other character. Her relationship with Camila reminds me of my relationship with both of my parents, with the dynamic reminding me of me and my mom and the relationship reminding me of the reason I don’t get along with my dad.

It’s 11 pm and I have a lot of thoughts but I’m tired and can’t articulate all of them, but guys, Luz means so fucking much to me. I can’t even begin to tell how close I hold her to my heart because goddammit, she’s like me. And it’s so fucking rare I see a character like me ever, much less to this degree.

Seeing Luz’s story come to an end is so bittersweet to me, especially since it was cut short. I wish we had more content with her.

Back when I binged glee in covid I used to bother my then friend, now ex about all my glee opinions and stuff and we somehow made this running joke that sebastian was a brown boy because why else would someone have so little chill about a school extracurricular right?

It started as a joke, and it's little more than crack even now but the thought of a biracial seb (sebu as we called him) is still funny and it endeared him to me. Through him we'd go on to make fantastical stories about the universe in which he was half brown. I don't know if I need to mention I'm brown too but yeah

The lore went as follows Sebastian's father Arshad Smythe was a second generation south asian immigrant who studied law in France where he met Mrs. Smythe.

we made him the most run of the mill brown dad imaginable and we loved him so much because of it , he was obviously just based on our fathers and uncles and brothers. The people we loved, who loved us in return, the people whose dad jokes and overbearing old timer antics we rolled our eyes at.

Mr and Mrs Smythe alternated living between France and Ohio, where Mr. Smythes childhood home was. It was a dilapidated suburban duplex complete with ugly beige carpeting. But Mr. Smythe just couldn't bear to part with it so he never sold the house or moved out. He would buy his son the best cars and enroll him in the best schools. He'd spend on everything else but he just couldn't change anything about the house his mother had lived in.

Sebastian and his mother understood. She had been important to them too. Samantha Smythe remembered all the times she sat on the floor of this house so the older woman could rub coconut oil into her hair. Sebastian remembered the spicy pickles she cooked in her kitchen, how good they tasted. So they understood.

Burt Hummel was an old friend of Mr. Smythes. He'd babysit Sebastian every once in a while, Santana too. So Kurt, Sebastian and Santana were all friends that got upto fun shenanigans in this world.

Sebastian had a cat called Maribelle, who scratched and bit everyone except for their trio and Mr. Smythe, she was also a mafia boss and an interdimensional/ divine immortal being who had a life of crime on the weekends. He had found her as a stray and begged his dad to let him keep keep her. He did albeit begrudgingly as all dads do, and then quickly became best friends with her as all dads do. I drew cartoons of Kurt and Sebastian as preteens chilling on beach chairs with sunglasses on, in the front yard of Sebastian's grandma's house. Mr Smythe , a portly gentleman with a half bald head with borders of dark hair lining the sides, wearing thick framed glasses would yell at them about their homework to which they'd reply "It's Sunbathe Saturday, Dad!"

Mr Smythe would then grumble and pick up Maribelle who had been in the process of burying a man, unbeknownst to him.

We had so many really specific just brown people things jokes about Sebastian, like him putting 'manja', a type of liquid glass used in competitive kite racing in South Asia in the rock salt slushie. Just him in general being really excited about sharp drinks after his brown cousin back in his home country show him the ropes.

Him being the kind of typical annoying uncultured highschool boy, ' kamla', who hung around coffee shops all day.

Him challenging his father to a game of cards at age eleven by making Mr. Smythe promise if he won he would have to love him unconditionally. Just as he pulled out the last ace he yelled out 'I'm gay but you love unconditionally no take backs!" And ran up the stairs yelling "no take backs!" As santana and kurt blocked mr smythes entrance to the stairway by popping ill timed party poppers.

If Seb ever got into any scuffles with them during play time he'd fire off a flurry of mixed French and Bengali curse causing Kurtana to exchange confused glances like, did you get any of that ?

His early s3 backstory was literally Mr Smythe being a little bit of a tiger parent. But then when he breaks down because of the Dave thing his dad makes amends saying "I want you to be the best at everything seb, and that includes being a person."

The scandals fix it in this universe was Maribelle scratching Blaines eyes out when she overhears about it from kurt and seb discussing it.

I figured later that Mr Smythe must have taken his wife's name because it's hardly a brown name even in Christian circles, to which my ex had replied you only realised now?

There's really no words in English to properly translate the jokes and their cultural significance to us. Parts of brown seb universe bled into my shitposts and fics but I could never part with him fully. Because the world wasn't ready for or interested in him. Since then I've graduated college, I've lost access to the Instagram account we used to text about this world in, and I've lost my ex and I've lost that time in my life, Brown Seb only exists in my memory now. So now maybe it's time to give him to the world so he exists outside of it too. Idk if there are Desi gleeks out there who get the jokes, but til then this post is just for me to remember
