The Shadows Awaken
https://archiveofourown.org/works/38432971/chapters/96049897
The second half of Deadly Relations told you part of the story. The Shadow Within told you part of the story. The Passing of the Technomages told you part of the story. Phoenix Rising told you part of the story. And part of the story was missing entirely.
Here  is the ENTIRE story about what Bester, Byron, Donne and even Morden  were doing in 2256, about a year before the show began - everything in  one place and explained, with nothing omitted.
* What Bester did in the Earth-Minbari War * Donne's backstory * What Morden was up to before the Shadows got him * Captain Hidalgo's backstory * What really happened  between Bester and Byron
JMS definitely does not want you to read this book.
This  work is rated M for mature/dark themes, grittiness, language, and  because lots of characters die (but given the subject matter you  probably knew that). No canon characters die in this work unless they also die here in canon (e.g. on the Icarus).
This  work contains no smut or sexual interactions between characters, and  the depictions of violence are no more graphic than in canon. There is  mild nudity.

Who are you? Who do you serve? What do you want?
I prefer to keep my identity a little bit of a secret, though I’m not exactly in a witness protection program. :) To people who do not know me in real life, however (and perhaps to some who do), this project, and my passion for it, can be both a little mysterious and more than a little unnerving.
I don’t personally like the term “fanfic” as much as I like AO3′s term “transformative works.” Some works are, of course, more “transformative” than others.
Mine is radically so.
Behind the Gloves pushes readers out of their comfort zones by telling a radically different story from the one told and implied in canon - and with the same facts, and thousands of citations to support every possible piece. It’s not about memorizing thousands of canon facts and regurgitating them - it’s about telling you the “story behind the the story” that those who produced canon, for one reason or another, didn’t tell you.
And the project pushes readers out of their comfort zones in other ways, too. I know it does - what that means, though, will be different for each person. That’s OK - just know that whatever you’re wondering, I’ve been expecting you.
(I had to take myself way out of my “comfort zone” to embark on this project, too, more than most of you will ever know. I tried for many years not to write this book, but there are some things from which you can’t run forever.)
But what is it? Where does it end, and you begin?
Like the frustrated editor in the Prologue, you might think this book is “apologia.” That, I can confidently tell you, it’s not. But I knew you would say that, too.
Indeed, I rewrote the beginning of the book and included the Prologue precisely because I knew readers would wonder this, as they tried to make sense of the book - not just to introduce Emily right away (she becomes more of an important character later in the project).
Behind the Gloves is not denying that there were some horrendous things that happened in the Corps. (The project addresses these events later, though I have already begun to discuss some of them, as in Natasha Alexander’s first story.) But the reasons for them might not be what you think, and the larger context might also not be what you think.
And some of those same folks you have been taught to regard as “good guys” in canon also did some horrendous things... I’ve got the canon cites to prove it, but the show and the greater canon swept all that under the rug and finally literally deified them, didn’t it?
(Oh yeah, we get there. It takes a while, but we do.)
Behind the Gloves aims to put everything into what I believe to be its proper larger cultural and historical context, both internally in the Corps and in the larger Earth Alliance. Readers will come to their own conclusions, of course, but they at least deserve to hear the other side of the story. (The people of that world got to hear “the other side of the story” after the Telepath War - if they wanted to hear it - with the publication of Bester’s memoirs and other documents. Historians wrangled for generations over what happened and why.)
I’m just one person, and I can’t give you everything. But I can damn well try - and I can give you this.

I’m a writer, too.
I’ve got another blog over at behind-the-gloves where I post updates on my book and talk about B5 fashion aesthetics (and where I’ll post art once I find an artist to work with!).
The book can be found here: http://archiveofourown.org/series/677654
tl;dr: Bester was right. Here’s why.

Courage Under Fire
https://archiveofourown.org/works/40626372/chapters/101788431
Canon says, of Bester's Psi Cop internship (the year after he graduated from the Academy/high school):
"Interned with Olivia Vong, where you showed outstanding courage under fire."
But then we don't see anything else about that year, because canon jumps from the Liz story to the Stephen Walters|Black Fox story, fourteen years later.
This is the missing story of that year.
Rated M for violence, language and trauma.
Updated almost every day.

The Trap is Set
https://archiveofourown.org/works/39285978/chapters/98308062
In Deadly Relations (the canon book), adolescent Bester runs away from school (on a whim) and almost winds up dead - twice. This is the story of how Bey rescues him, except I'm telling it from Bey's point of view. Unlike (clueless) adolescent Bester in the book, Bey actually knows what is going on and why.
This is the missing story and context.

Backstory wrangling.
https://archiveofourown.org/chapters/76021604
A short essay in which I try to iron out canon’s inconsistencies and writing problems and figure out the most plausible backstory for Bester’s grandfather, so I can fix his story and create some compelling narrative out of the mess that was Dark Genesis.

New work
https://archiveofourown.org/works/30774635/chapters/75960032
2156: The year the Earth Alliance almost fell apart. The year the Centauri landed and made first contact. The year the Corps was founded. The year Kevin's past catches up with him.
Dark Genesis covers this entire time period in pages 115-123: in a single chapter! (Part 2, chapter 6) It's also one of the most action-packed and eventful periods in canon, so you deserve the full version. Here's what the book didn't show.

Hi, I was just wandering, you haven’t written anything for behind the gloves for a while... Did something happen? Will you get back to it at some point? Could you maybe write about different cases bester might have had?
Hi!
Thanks for the message. I absolutely do intend to go back to Behind the Gloves! I was sick for a while (about ten months) and so any energy I had went to (paying) work, and I had nothing left over for writing. But now at last I’m doing better!
It really makes me feel so much better to know that people care about my work and noticed my absence. Again, thank you so much for the note here. It means a tremendous amount to me to know that people care. I think the nature of things on the internet is that often, people read something and like it but never let the author know. There’s little human interaction. And for me, with something like this project - the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, in more ways than one - silence can feel deeply isolating.
It will take me a while to have new material written (now that I have the strength to write again). I was able to post so much so quickly to this project because I spent five years - continuously - writing it, editing, etc. before I posted a word. This is a Long Term Project in every sense.
I expect to be back writing again after Thanksgiving. ^_^

I’m trying.
OMG, it’s been so many years and I’ve worked so hard and yet even thinking about this stuff still makes me panic and feel sick. Fifteen years. I’ve written. I’ve denied. I’ve talked and I’ve been silent. I’ve been to therapy. Everything everything, 350,000 words posted, I’ve tried so damn hard and then I try to interact with fandom and they’re all “this show gave me hope and light when all my world is darkness” and where I’m coming from is so not that place, so the very, very opposite of that place, and then I think, “I’m gonna carry this with me my whole life, aren’t I, and probably into my next life, too,” and then I just want to cry.
Bear with me, people. I want to write. But I feel so, so alone in all of this.

New fan art!
Artwork I commissioned from Ramon Puasa Jr. and Kira L. Nguyen showing a scene from my earlier fic, Crystal's Story. Full-size image on AO3 here!
-----
There was no escape. She was on a spaceship. She had nowhere to run.
“This is it,” the cop said forcefully, disdainfully. “What’s wrong with you? Do you support the underground?”
“No! Of course not!”
“Then you gonna help us or not?”
It wasn’t a real choice.
Against her better judgment, Crystal knelt down and took off one of her gloves and touched the dying man’s face. All she had to do was look into his mind, and she was sucked downward.

What really happened to the Narn telepaths?
But something different happened to the Narn, because the gene itself was wiped out of the entire population - among billions of Narn, there hasn't been a single telepath in a thousand years.
According to the Book of G'Quan, the Shadows killed Narn telepaths (including children), G'Quan and the last remaining Narn telepaths defeated the Shadows, and every single Narn telepath died in this war. And Narn who weren’t telepathic, but who carried this gene, also mysteriously perished.
Narn telepaths all banded together, fought the Shadows, and sacrificed themselves for their race.
Or maybe that's not what happened at all.
