florian's always struggled to make friends so he didn't really have any back in galar... uh, actually — it might be more accurate is that he USED to have one...

headcanon explanation + bonus under the cut!

like mentioned above, florian has always struggled a lot with making friends. while he's a kindhearted and friendly kid, he can come across as kinda intense to others, ( especially when discussing his interests, ) and that's led to him often being alienated amongst his peers. though he's grown used to being by himself and has learned to not care if others dislike him, he still hopes that he can find at least a few people to connect with outside of his family. it's a hope that's always been present, ever since he was growing up in wyndon.

of course, he wasn't the only loner amongst his childhood peers. around 7 years old, he found a friend in bede fee, who attended the same primary school as him. bede themself wasn't exactly the friendliest kid out there and often had spats with people who made fun of them for their family's low-income status, but florian managed to get them to warm up to him. the two got along pretty well and found comfort in having a friend that seemed to understand them, both being lonely kids who were often picked on by others. after a while, they became pretty much inseparable as they frequently played, read, and laughed together. to florian, it didn't matter that people picked on him just as long as he had bede there to be his friend. bede shared a similar sentiment... at least, at first he did.

admittedly, florian has a habit of resting on his laurels when it comes to things he doesn't have an interest in improving. ( it doesn't matter if he isn't as good of a battler as his sister, all he needs is to be strong enough to keep himself safe during field research. it doesn't matter if he's ostracized amongst his peers and looked down upon, he's alright as long as he has someone to call a friend. etc, etc. ) bede, however, couldn't keep themself from caring about their place in the pecking order. they were sick of others looking down on them, sick of others thinking they were better than them. they just couldn't understand how florian could stand people treating him poorly without getting angry. over time, frustration and resentment towards his attitude festered inside them. these feelings were only exacerbated by their struggles at home and being sent to the orphanage. while they would still call each other friends, their bond had definitely become strained.

everything came to a head when they were both 11 years old, when rose visited bede's orphanage and his acknowledgement caused a major shift in their personality. after all, someone that important seeing their potential surely meant that they better than their peers, right? they soon became much more pompous and rude in nature. florian still stayed close by despite bede's worsening attitude towards him, but it wasn't before long until all of their pent-up feelings came flooding out. their friendship ended with massive fight, with bede telling florian that they were sick of being weighed down by an " annoying pest " like him. while they expected for him to take their cruel remarks in stride like he always did with everyone else, bede couldn't help but feel a little guilty when florian ran off in tears. the two stopped talking after that fight and ever since then, there's always a worry in the back of florian's mind that his friends will eventually get sick of him like bede did. ( thankfully, the friends he's made since then have helped make him feel a lot more secure in their relationships. )

Regarding the Pokémon SWSH Ballet Academy AU, what are the favourite ballets of Raihan and Bede where they like the most playing the role of the main villain? What kind of villain do they play best?

Ooh, that's a good one, anon!

Raihan:

He is best at playing the creepy villains, the menacing ones, the scary and powerful. Think of a very dark Von Rothbart in Swan Lake, or a male version of Carabosse (Maleficient) in Sleeping Beauty. His movements become slower but as powerful as usual in those roles, like a tiger that knows its prey cannot flee.

He mostly likes playing the unabashed, confident villains who fall due to hubris, but hey, if a ballet is done by the kiddos, and they need some dragon, you can bet your money on Raihan begging to play the dragon.

Bede:

They (Opal's idea) made him play Don Quixote once (with Allister as Sancho). He felt a bit ridiculous in the role at first, but he was the title character, so... the Don grew on him after, like, 3 rehearsals. Though he won't admit it ever. But of course, Opal just knows.

Later down the line, when they did Romeo & Juliet, he danced as Pâris. And that's when Bede became the Fabulous Bad Prince.

He did an absurdly good Rat King in the Nutcracker, too. He knows it and is particularly proud of himself for that role.

gay people?? in MY pokemon?? its more likely than you think

This post is about nightmare headcanons I have for Gladion and Bede, as well as how they help each other with their nightmares (Note, I ship Bede and Gladion together, hence the theming of my blog). I'll first talk about Gladion, then Bede, then the two of them together. The rest is under the cut!

Gladion has nightmares pretty much every night. I feel like that's a pretty believable assumption.

Going off of my own version of him, the guy was forced to run away from home with no money, no home, and half a team of Pokemon, one of which is sylvally in its type: null variant.

He had to grow up under the "care" of Faba because his mother was so busy with work, causing Faba to abuse both him and Lillie (paralleling Lusamine in the games, basically).

And then he found out that Faba, his abuser, hypnotized Lillie and Lusamine into forgetting anything bad happened. And right after this horrifying revelation, he sees his mother taken away by an Ultra Beast at the fault of Faba opening an Ultra Wormhole.

because of this, he has a ton of nightmares ranging from memories of Faba being way to harsh when training Gladion's eevee/umbreon, sylvally getting hurt/dying/taken away, his mother getting possessed by the Ultra Beast and screaming "I hate you!" at the top of her lungs, Lillie getting hurt and feeling betrayed that Gladion left, and every terrible thing he must've witnessed in his (at least) year-long stay out on the streets of an unfamiliar region... Gladion clearly has WAY too much trauma and guilt for a teenager to handle at once.

Every night, without fail, he wakes up in a cold sweat. He's had so many nightmares that he doesn't usually jump up anymore. He just opens his eyes, realizes that it was just a dream, and tries his best to go to sleep despite his fear of another nightmare. It takes a long time for him to finally fall asleep because of that fear, causing him to develop insomnia

Occasionally, however, the nightmare is so terrifying that Gladion shoots up and goes into a panic attack. He doesn't do this as much anymore, but it still absolutely happens. He usually switches to being nonverbal during panic attacks, so others must remember to be calm and patient with him.

Bede's nightmares aren't too different. He also has frequent nightmares, though he has gotten less of them lately due to Opal actually caring for him like a parental figure should (unlike SOME rich flowers i know COUGH COUGH rose COUGH COUGH). He still gets them more frequently than any person should, let alone a teenager, but he's slowly healing.

Bede usually gets nightmares about abandonment or losing the people he loves. Rose usually has some role in these nightmares, whether he's the person abandoning him or some other force.

He'll also often get nightmares that Opal will abandon him and leave him to die in the Glimwood Tangle, along with his friends and other loved ones. Despite Rose being out of his life, Rose's damage to Bede's psyche is still very apparent, and it's something he has to consciously fight against every day.

He at least has Opal, as occasionally she'll sense him having a nightmare and go to comfort him. At first he finds it extremely embarrassing and is all pissy about her helping him, but she tut tut's and makes sure he's ok anyways. He slowly shifts from resenting it to actively being very thankful for it, as deep down, he's glad that she can be there.

Bede and Gladion both understand what its like to have nightmares a lot, so they make sure to comfort each other the best they can. All the walls that they've built up towards people fall down in order to make sure they're ok, as they know how terrifying and lonely it feels to not have someone there for you.

Once they grow a lot closer, they'll offer to hug the other if they need it. This is especially good for Gladion since he still gets extremely bad nightmares at times and needs someone to hold him for a bit in order to calm down.

They don't only start doing this once they fall for each other, they do this as friends without any romantic reasoning because they know how crucial support is when waking up from a nightmare. Of course, once they do fall for each other, they'll make sure to occasionally kiss the other on the cheek if they're ok with it and give plenty of snuggles. The important take-away is that they know how to help each other when the nightmares get bad.

As for my headcanons/theories... most of them are generally character-based, but i have a few I'd be happy to share! (readmore because this gets long ^^")

General headcanons:

All of the Pokémon Leagues in the world vary on strength and community investment. Near the bottom are leagues like Alola's (brand new, little support), Paldea's (made for multiple Champions, one of their leaders double-dips as Elite 4), Kanto's (prolonged, unresolved absence of one Gym Leader, lack of a Champion until your rival), and Unova's (consistent turnover in leaders, champions, and gym locations; only league to canonically be defeated by a Team). From there, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Kalos are all relatively similar in "solid league" territory, with Galar's being the most heavily invested-in and supported league in the series.

Humans with psychic powers, medium abilities, special type affinities (think Iris's "understanding the hearts of Dragons", rather than typical gym leaders), or otherwise inexplicable abilities (whatever the Shadow Triad is doing?) tend to have slightly Pokémon-influenced genetics, as ties back to the infamous Japanese Canalave City library entry. This tends to go many generations back, rather than direct. (No, N is not a Zoroark. Could he be distantly related to one? Maybe.)

The average age for gym challenges varies by region. (Our protags do not necessarily hit that average.) Kanto through Sinnoh skew younger, from 10-12 (since they're all geographically in similar areas). Alola is solidly at 11. Unova and Kalos tend to be somewhere from 13-15. Paldea is literally any age, hence the adults in uniforms. Galar trends older, more towards an average of 16. Yes, this makes Leon's refusal to involve you in any situation ever look sillier. (Leon is considered exceptionally young for the challenge at 10, and all of your potential challengers in the Champion Cup look generally in their older teens. Also, I refuse to believe Marnie's wearing a crop top for her League uniform before she's 16.)

"Official" starter Pokémon are endangered species. Professors generally hope that by giving them to young trainers, they'll encourage species awareness and growth.

Battles follow anime rules more than game rules. Terrain advantages, move combinations to create effects, etc. are all a part of battles. The only exception, for the sake of my sanity when creating content, is that fish Pokémon float. And even I'm aware that's not realistic, even if it's funny.

Character headcanons:

The "main" protags in my mind are Red, Ethan, May, Lucas, Hilda, Rosa, Calem, Selene, Gloria, "Akari", and Florian.

In order of public perception from "weird kid" to "popular kid" for protags: Red, Gloria, Lucas, Selene, May, Hilda, Ethan, "Akari", Calem, Rosa, Florian.

None of the members of either the Galar Gang or the Paldea Gang are normal.

Hop is trans. While his being trans is in no way related to Leon, his attempts at proving himself and trying to live up to his brother's example of masculinity are at least a little related.

Bede's time in the orphanage is a result of parental neglect rather than money or being orphaned by definition.

Nemona is not a stalker, JFC. She's just excited to have a friend equally interested in battling as her for once in her goddamn life. She is very touchy, huggy, clingy without realizing it, though.

Penny is very heavily involved in whatever the Pokémon equivalent of Tumblr and AO3 are. She convinces Arven, Nemona, and Florian to watch anime with her on the regular.

Ok Hop HCs !!! :) he's my favorite!! leon ones will come next probably because. they are on my mind all the time <3

- hop picked his jacket because the fluff around the collar and sleeves reminds him of leon's cape. now the fluff is just a comfort thing

- hop got his wooloo when he was five as a gift from leon. wooloo supremacy 💪💪 they were inseparable his whole childhood

- hop is a lefty but taught himself how to throw with his right hand because he wanted to throw like leon, who's right-handed

- sonia does extra schooling and lessons for him! he's actually really booksmart despite how he acts sometimes, and he loves learning about pokemon. he just never considered it a job option cuz he was so obsessed with being the next champion

- sonia is like an honorary big sister to him. they've got nicknames and everything

- every year for his birthday leon takes hop to stay a weekend in wyndon!! hop isn't a huge fan of the city tbh, much more of a country kid, but he loves spending time with his brother

- he loves to draw but it's like the most carefree doodles. like he specializes in stick figures and the margins of all his notes are filled with little drawings of pokemon (especially his own team)

- the WORST handwriting, he can't even read it

- he's a horrible swimmer. nearly drowns every beach trip

- he's tall!!! not much taller than the player character at the time of the game's events, but shortly after he hits a major growth spurt. he's about as tall as leon soon enough

- lots of hurt/comfort after he loses in the championship battle. he acts like he's fine to to get player character, but when he's alone he breaks down. that's his whole childhood's ambition crushed, you know? leon tries to comfort him, but it's hard when the experience is so different. if anything, sonia is the one who's able to comfort him best. that's part of why he takes the job with her so quickly. writing a fic about this haha

- he ends up working all over the region when he takes on an apprenticeship with sonia!! works pretty closely with a lot of gym leaders while he's conducting field research and learning more abt pokemon in the wild, especially fairy types with bede. good ol enemies to friends development 😌

- him and marnie get along suuper well after the game's events!! he loves the energy in spikemuth, even if it's a bit of a trek to get there. often will hang out to watch the gym challenge

- when leon is defeated, he ends up coming back to stay in postwick for a while. it's a suuper weird adjustment for the both of them since they haven't lived together in so long. there's these years of space between them, leon not having been super active in hop's life since he left to be a champion aside from time off, but both of them want to reconnect. im also writing a fic abt this actually lol
