What is Queerbaiting?

I had a good conversation about this with @ejassy the other day and figured I'd just make a post about it in case anyone else wanted to either share their own thoughts too or were just confused over what people mean when they say queerbaiting. Which CAN get confusing, especially when it gets used incorrectly ALOT.

So in short simple terms, for queerbaiting and its similar phrases?

Queer subtext: I normally think of this in 2 ways. The first being unintentionally gay. This was clearly not the intention of the writer ever, but the gay ships were just accidentally too full of chemistry and the ship shipped itself by accident even though the characters aren't "canon" gay (think batman and joker. Or Lord of the rings or Elsa from Frozen. Or like a good portion of misogynistic anime writers who can't write a female character that isn't flat AF lol)

The second being where it can also be defined as INTENTIONALLY gay. Where instead of it being something that just happened, it was written like this pn purpose and with full intention of being queer and is in its own way, good queer representation, even if the queer relationship isn't ever technically confirmed, or only confirmed "off screen" by the writers. This is subtext and its sometimes left only as subtext because the romance is only a subplot or because of censorship. (Think Legend of Korra or Think Merthur from Merlin bbc.)

Queercoding: acting queer or leaning into queer themes/subtext but not explicity queer for any number of reasons, including censorship for fictional universes or just being closeted. Basically there is enough subtext available for the audience to read them as queer regardless of if their sexuality is never confirmed either way. (Again, think Elsa. Or Jo March from Little Women, or think Nick Carraway from the Great Gatsby. Think of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji from The Untamed, the show not the web novel verison lol. Think Xena: Warrior Princess)

Queerbaiting: obviously leaning into and promoting queer subtext and queer themes to keep gay fans on the hook and invested in your media with zero intentions of follow through. Almost at times even turning it into like a joke or just making it very obvious that the character was never actually queer. This was a term coined by queer theorist academics in the 1990s and didn't actually exist before then. This is not a term that can apply to real people. Real people can't queerbait. With very few exceptions to that "rule." Which I will discuss some of those possible exceptions in a bit. (Think Destial from supernatural, or Johnlock from Sherlock, or think Supercorp, Lena and Kara, from Supergirl. Or think Sam and Bucky from MCU, Bechloe from Pitch Perfect or Sterek from Teen Wolf. If anyone doesnt know why these would fall under a more queerbaiting label and dont already know, please feel free to ask for sure)

There are some good sources out there that go into much more detail about what queerbaiting is, how it's been misused and more too as well if you have the time to watch them. This video was recommended from @guacamoli-avocadorado here. It is a great intro to the term and how it is used/should be used broken down in an easy to understand way. And it gives a bunch more examples like I shared above, etc.

And this one is longer but a really good and interesting dialogue about the topic. They take the definition of queerbaiting and expands upon it greatly as well as gives a very through dive down the history of queerness and queer subtext through film and media. This one was recommended by @chikooritajjk

Now, real people cannot queer bait. It's impossible UNLESS they have CONFIRMED their sexuality as "straight" and will sometimes "play gay," for an audience. And not just a straight actor playing a gay one, but doing something that is intentionally queer but backtracking and being like "well I mean, I'm straight so I didn't mean it." And doing so repeatedly and/or even making light of it or joking about it. Or even just being plain homophobic about it. Unless you are talking about the actions they take to promote their "brand" in an effort to profit off queer fans on purpose, while continuing to make it clear its not "that serious," then you could make an argument that that person is queerbaiting. Which, for clarification, two people of the same sex simply interacting together, even with lots of general affection, cannot be classified as queerbaiting ever. Especially because a person doesn't have to be "out" to act on their queerness. Our queerness is our own. No one gets to demand someone to give answers about their sexuality to confirm queerness or not before the public "decides" to keep trying to bully an answer out of them or not. You don't get to take self expression and someone else's comfort away from them for your own comfort in labels that don't belong to you anyway. The thing is, no one owes anyone any explanations about how they present themselves or what their sexuality is. You can't forcibly out people. "I think you are gay, therefore I'm owed an explanation and if you don't give me one, it means you are just queerbaiting" is WRONG. It's an umbrella media term, not a bullying tactic. This applys to everyone, random people off the street, actors, musicians, authors who write/engage in queer literature, public speakers, influencers, etc...

There are some of kpop idol groups (or other celebrities in general) that could be classified as queerbaiting. Because they use queerness to build and promote their "brand" while otherwise never doing anything about it (even as an ally) and/or even being lowkey homophobic about it all or just continuing to make sure the audience knows they "arent actually gay." Or they use queerness in a way that fetishizies it, again without actually meaning it in any way. That's a whole seperate issue, and it could in ways be considered queerbaiting. Or it could more likely dig further into the issue of inauthenic queer fetishization used as a shock value for an audience to be used as sexual fantasies for their STRAIGHT audience, rather than to draw in a queer audience who are more looking for the possible authenticity of queerness or allyship in the celebrities/idols they are building these parasocial relationships with. Because again, unless you know what this person's sexuality is, how are you sure they aren't just exploring/or expressing their own queerness and aren't labeling it or are closeted for whatever their reasons may be, including just not being ready to come out yet.

It is a fine line to walk, and there will probably be times in the "real life" instances above where you will have to use your own critical thinking skills to decide how you feel about things, etc. But for the most part, real people can't really queerbait. But hopefully this helps anyone who was/is confused. There are also a lot more resources out there if you wanted to continue looking into it. This is just what I know about it all myself too, if anyone has anything to add, they are free to do so. 💜

This time when Chloe wakes up (she woke up a short while ago but it was still dark and even a hard core morning person like she is she was not going to be getting up at the butt crack of dawn on her day off) she wakes up to the sight of Beca smiling at her.

They are still tangled in the bedsheets they messed around in last night, and the smell of sex lingers in the air even as a crack in their bedroom window attempts to lure it out. Chloe wrinkles her nose, putting her arm under her chin so that her face isn't planted in the mattress with the position that she is laying on.

"Hey."

Beca's smile stretches a little wider. "Hey yourself. Are you always this beautiful when I'm the person who's awake the first time around? 'Cause if so I think I'll be setting up an alarm to be awake before you now."

Chloe closes her eyes and laughs with a sleepy exhaustion into the crook of her elbow. "I went back to sleep after looking at the clock earlier at five, Bec. But sure. If you think you're up for it."

Many people don’t know this but sometimes Chloe is the person who is the more “unromantic” of the pair. Ever since she started dating Beca (finally, dear god) a couple of years ago, she has dropped the notion that was ingrained into her at a young age that if she wanted to fall in love with and be with her “forever person” she would have to be who that person wanted her to be: which was typically happy, sunshine-y, everything was fine and no matter how many times people try to kick me down I will always try to get back up and smile about it, kinda deal.

But Beca doesn’t want her to be like that. She wanted Chloe to be who she herself wanted to be and if she isn’t happy all the time... well, that’s perfectly fine, because everybody has feelings and Beca loves her all the more for them because it shows that she trusts Beca enough to show her how dark or cynical they can be. 

So Chloe shows them, and drops that notion, and her heart beats and leaps for the tiny person who she adores most in the entire world.

Even when that person likes to be cheesy from time to time.

For someone who grouches whenever she has to watch movies, Beca sure knows how to talk like a movie character right out of a rom-com: soft and sweet and corny, with romance sprinkled delicately in the simplest of one-liners.

At Chloe’s response to her earlier remark, Beca pouts. Her bottom lip protrudes out about an inch from her upper one and Chloe finds herself rolling her eyes at the gesture, even when her finger walks up from Beca’s jaw to touch it. “I can wake up in the mornings before you do if I want to. I have the determination to do so, just to watch you sleep next to me.”

The hum that Chloe emits right then is to disguise the choking sensation that she feels clogging up her throat. It’s times like these, when Beca makes her feel wanted and loved and genuinely liked (not to mention understood, there are fewer and fewer of those people now in her life, even her own parents have no idea why she does the things that she does ninety-nine percent of the time) that Chloe wants to cry, because she has finally found her forever person and she didn’t have to give up or suppress any part of her personality to do it. She has done so much giving in relationships like the one she now shares with Beca in the past, some even lasting longer than, and not once has she felt like she received as much back. Not like with Beca.

No, with Beca it’s an equal amount. It makes Chloe feel secured, real, down to the Earth that she stands on.

“Weirdo.” She takes Beca’s endearments for her, adopts to them, and then reciprocates, because they are in a committed relationship and because she just...can. “You’re a stalker weirdo.” Chloe leans over, kisses her girlfriend right on the lips. “And I love you.”

Beca kisses her back. Her hand slides across the bare skin of Chloe’s shoulders to tangle into her hair, bunching lightly. Chloe huffs out a sigh, falling forward, shifting herself so that she fits comfortably between Beca’s legs.

Beca immediately bucks her hips. Chloe can tell what she wants, can feel it in the needy whimper spilling from Beca’s mouth, but she stalls. 

They have things to do today- errands, appointments, adult things. Beca knows this, has cleared her schedule at work for it, and it is the reason why they are making out in the middle of their queen-sized bed in the first place instead of rushing off to their respective demanding jobs. Being a highly successful music producer calling out the shots on her own clients does not mix well with Chloe’s veterinary surgeon title at the medical facility in the center of town, and whenever they are not busy working, they are either making out, hanging out, or having sex. It leaves little time for anything else and coupled with the desire to do more things with Beca than just getting in her pants as well as not wanting to feel alone when she has to deal with “not so happy things” (she has to have dinner with her brother that evening who is visiting), Chloe has convinced Beca to carve out one day every other week just for them to hack through all of their adult responsibilities. 

It works, but only if Chloe has to step on the brakes whenever Beca becomes really handsy. 

Like now.

Chloe pulls her mouth away from Beca’s when she feels Beca’s foot sneak up her thigh. “Bec. We need to stop.”

“But I don’t want to.”

And only if Chloe is adamant about it. However difficult it may be (it feels extremely good whenever Beca needs her and she needs her back- when there is a give and a take). “We have to.” She pecks the erratic jump of Beca’s pulse, but doesn’t bite it like her brain begs her to because if she does, they are done for. “We can continue after we return from the dinner. I’ll be all yours, and we can do whatever we want. Sound good?”

Beca swallows. Her eyelids cover the majority of her gaze, shadowing it dark, contemplative. Chloe knows that she is in, then. “Yeah.”

“Cool.” Chloe gives one last kiss, before allowing the sheets to slip down her waist. She swings her legs over the edge of their bed. “Now, I need to take a shower.”

“Love it. Let’s go.”

Chloe looks back her in surprise. “But-”

It is like Beca is in physical pain with the exaggerated way she groans at the ceiling. “Relax, I just wanna wash your hair, okay? No funny business.”

And Chloe laughs and pulls Beca off towards their bathroom, even though she is sure that is not what they are actually going to be ending up doing. Because she knows that if it does escalate it will be on Chloe’s terms, and only hers. 

She decides that it will. Just a little bit. For old times sake. 

And because Beca accepts her for she is. Not when she is happy and romantic, but when she is not. Beca causes Chloe to be all those things, not the other way around, like others would think.

Nobody can be sunshine and rainbows all the time. There is rain, and also the ground, and sometimes people like Chloe would just like to find an anchor to help lower her head from the clouds.

And Chloe found it.

Beca.

The Consigliere - Chapter Preview (Read the rest on ao3) The two of them took their turns getting into something more comfortable, freshening up and having a shower before each pulling up a chair by the small dining table. Beca was sipping on her third glass of wine and Chloe was on her fourth bottle of light beer, chatting away about Dr. Mitchell's condition and the fight the tenants won, reading over Aubrey's updates on everything, as well as Lilly's and Emily's. At the back of Chloe's mind though, a battle waged.

She didn't want to leave the comforts of Beca's home. But she supposed she had to.

Because if she gets even more comfortable… if she lets those feelings grow even more… let them take root in her heart…

One day, she knew, she would have to let Beca go. Set her free. She was here for a reason after all.

But the other side of her already knew it was too late and fought hard, wanting to stay in her company. Enjoy it while it lasts.

"Are you really okay?" Beca asked, concern written all over her face.

Chloe sighed. "Yeah, it's just… Chicago let slip that DSM and Babel might be suspecting you're connected to the mafia," she said. She didn't want to admit the truth of what she was thinking, not to Beca.

Beca shrugged. "It was only a matter of time."

Chloe chuckled in response. Beca was too cool and too calm after hearing that her enemies may have found her out "You're not even worried, are you?"

"If they're smart, they should be the ones to worry," Beca replied with a smirk.

And what can Chloe do but be amused and gaze fondly at her consigliere.

It's been like a dream living with Beca. Full of adventure with all their underhanded tactics and shenanigans. They had a goal to achieve, and with Beca by their side, Chloe wasn't even the least bit worried. She made her feel safe, and brave. Not just her, but the tenants too.

It wasn't hard. In fact, it was the easiest thing to do. The most natural even.

Beca Bella was very attractive to begin with, add smart and confident and brave and capable, and she's practically irresistible.

But more than that, underneath the cool and tough demeanor, Chloe could see, she had a soft and kind heart. She hated to see the injustice being done to the innocent.

Everything really was like a dream. But if Chloe kept indulging the dream, she might never want to wake up.

So how could she ever let go then?

"I've made up my mind," Chloe then said. "Listen, Beca, the work done at my place is done."

"I know."

"You know?"

"I hired them, remember?" Beca said with a chuckle. "They also let me know you can move back."

"And you're not sending me packing out of here because?"

"I promised you could stay for as long as you need to," Beca replied matter-of-factly before looking away. "You-you don't have to leave yet, you know? If you don't want to."

"But I really should," Chloe replied thoughtfully. "But I'll stay for one more night, only if you can grant me a wish."

Beca looked at Chloe with a quirked brow. "What wish?"

"Stand up," Chloe replied, standing up herself and offering both her hands to Beca to help her get out of her seat. Beca obliged, still looking at Chloe curiously.

"Close your eyes," Chloe then said, taking a step closer to Beca.

Beca visibly gulped as Chloe kept inching closer. She looked all too adorable in that moment that she couldn't help but chuckle. "W-what?"

"Just do as I say," Chloe then said, placing both her hands on Beca's shoulder to keep her still. "I just want to test something."

Beca gave her a suspicious look. With a deep breath, she obliged.

Chloe's eyes landed on Beca's lips for a moment but fought hard against the temptation to steal from Beca Bella. That would be too dangerous of a thing to do for both of them.

In this game against Babel, there could never be room for romance, even if true feelings bloom from their circumstance. That would only ever be to their detriment.

That would only make it that much harder to let go.

So, Chloe settled for something else. She pulled Beca incredibly close and hugged her tightly. Beca jumped at the surprised contact, but nevertheless settled into Chloe's arms, instinctively placing her arms around Chloe's waist as well.

"What exactly are you testing?" Beca answered.

The extent of my feelings for you, you dummy, Chloe thought to herself.

"That's on a need-to-know basis, and you don't need to know," was the actual response she gave to Beca.

"For how long are we going to be like this?" Beca asked. "Not that I'm complaining, just curious."

"For as long as I want," Chloe replied. "Don't ever scare me like earlier, Beca, promise?"

"Okay, I promise," Beca replied.

And the two of them stood there in silence, simply holding on to each other for as long as they could that night.

Neither ever wanting to let go and end it.

Just Critical Role as of now! I may or may not delve into other fandoms, but for now the Imodna brainrot is too real.

What’s your favorite fic on your Ao3?

It’s gotta be “If I Go, I’m Goin’ Shameless”. It’s the first long fic I started, and it’s been such a fun ride! The fact that people seem to really enjoy it doesn’t hurt either ;) My Western fic “Till the Moon Don’t Shine” is a strong second. I’m so excited to get into the meat of it because man I have so many ideas.

I just finished Lycoris Recoil and I’m on season five of Rizzoli and Isles and I’m just… look, I love female friendships and I think a lot more media should embrace same and mixed gender platonic relationships and these two shows are not the same so I can understand if you miss my meaning. But there’s a dynamic in girls with guns series and movies that feels like the rainbow blanket on the bed that Bechloe share (ya know, platonically).

Queer folk do exist in these worlds (chisato’s father figure Mika was a 5 on the Kinsey scale and Kusunoki was so very butch, the representation was a lot more incidental on rizzles, but still present) but the main characters are still super straight.

Honestly, I’m not sure what I’m asking for. Most people don’t even tell, much less have sex with every single person they are attracted to. Mainstream television is getting better about exploring the sexual spectrum. I’m not asking for every show to be First Kill or Warrior Nun and I’m not expecting Emily Andras, Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes to be the show runners for every show.

Maybe it’s the same reason the ending of Supergirl left some people unsatisfied despite the inclusion of DreamDox and Dansen in the canon and the wink leaving Kara, Lena and Cat single. A combination of friendships being ignored for romance in most mainstream stories and the desire to see ourselves as the main characters.

Hi dude :) if you're still taking prompts, I have one! All of Chloe's relationships with all the guys she's dating go south bc of her and beca's "platonic" relationship

Sorry, I haven’t written this story until now. I had it in my inbox for a few months. But I’m trying to get back into the swing of things and start writing again frequently. 

I hope you like it because I had a fun time with it. Thanks for the request.

This may have been the third or the fourth time this has happened. The first two times was in a coffee shop, the third was in a movie theater (which was more awkward then when her father showed up to Christmas with her new girlfriend unannounced last year) and now in a restaurant. 

Chloe is possibly buzzing in front of her with excitement and Beca can’t possibly understand why. 

It became a routine of some sort. Chloe would date a guy for a month or two before inviting Beca along to “get to know” him. They would sit there silently while Chloe chatted along, trading stories back and forth about them to the other. Beca would dutifully observe the guy and at the end of the day would give her opinion. 

Usually a bad one.

 And for some bizarre reason, the guy wouldn’t last for another week. 

Chloe’s smile can’t be bigger when the guy finally shows up and Beca grimaces when she kisses him deeply. He’s tall, blonde with blue eyes, masculine with broad shoulders. Basically a walking Ken doll. And Beca can’t even deny the fact that they look good together.

He introduces himself as Colton before they sit down and Beca tries to smile. 

“So, umm…” She speaks up, trying to think of one of the questions she usually asks. “What do you do?” 

He answers with a nod. “I’m a professional surfer.” 

Of course he is. Beca snickers internally but keeps a straight face. 

Chloe grins and pats his arm, before turning her attention to Beca. The waiter walks up to the table and the three of them grab the menus. Beca orders some pasta, keeping it simple but before Chloe can open her mouth Colton interrupts her with a smile. Beca notices his hand disappear under the table and probably settling on Chloe’s thigh. 

“I’ll get it, babe.” He says with a charming smile, way too confident.

Beca would crawl out his eyes. She hates when people try to order for her. Jesse tried to do it one time, in some kind of lame attempt to be romantic but when Beca “joked” that she would stab him with a fork, he stopped. 

His eyes skips along the menu before he turns to the waiter. “She’ll have a shrimp salad - “

“She’s allergic to shrimp.” Beca says unexpectedly and Colton frowns slightly at her. 

“Tomato soup.”

“Hates it.”

“BTL?” Now the question mark at the end of the sentence amuses Beca. It just means he lost his confidence. 

Beca frowns judgingly. “Dude, she’s a vegetarian.” She suddenly questions if he actually knew Chloe or if it’s their first time meeting. 

The guys looks ashamed for a second before nodding. “Right, right, I always forgot.” He grins clumsily at Chloe like he’s trying to play it off as goofiness and Beca’s jaw clenches when Chloe smiles back uncomfortable, forgiving him in an instance. 

Beca may not be the best at expression her feelings for people, especially to her friends but she won’t let anybody take advantage of them either. Chloe’s an amazing person, who’s compassionate and loving - sometimes too much for her own good - and it attracts douchebags like that jellyfish eater in front of her. She just opens her mouth to unleash some perfectly crafted sarcastic comments on his ass when Chloe’s hand sneak across the table and settles on her hand. 

Beca’s eyes shifts to her and scrunches up her nose when Chloe’s eyes practically beg her to stay quiet. Beca doesn’t miss Colton’s eyes zeroing on the action. She raises her eyebrows in amusement and throws gasoline on the fire by turning Chloe’s hand over and swiftly intertwining their fingers. Chloe’s brows draws together but she smiles pleasantly at the surprise.

The waiter’s subtle cough makes them realize where they are and Chloe lets go of her hand before smiles apologetically at him. “Sorry, I’ll just have the house salad. Without tomato, please.” 

The boyfriend - Beca wants to gag - orders bass with potato chips. Can he actually live without the ocean or is he a mermaid? Either way, Beca longs to throw him back. 

“Aright, Beca. What do you do?” He asks with a light tone, pretending that he can still manage to turn this thing around. Beca’s ready to prove him wrong.

She purses her lips together. “I’m a music producer.” She keeps the answer short. 

“Cool.” He nods, his bottom lip in a pout like he’s impressed. “What studio? Maybe I’ve heard of them.”

Chloe chimes in. “She’s freelancing at the moment.” Colton looks at her before turning back to Beca.

Beca’s jaw clenches at the reminder. “Yeah, my last job didn’t really work out like I’d hope it would.” 

Colton nods and Beca notices his arm moving up and down Chloe’s thighs and she wants him to stop. 

“It must be hard not having a job right now. Especially in this century where being financial stable is the most important thing.” He explains and Beca fights  the urge to wait until he’s finished. “Plus, I wouldn’t imagine that spinning records would quite pay the bills.”

“Yeah because surfing on water is a stable job. God forbid there’s a shark and - “

“Yay, the food is here!” Chloe jumps in before Beca could continue but the brunette’s eyes flashes with fire as she swallows her words. Chloe gently kicks her in the shin and warns her through her eyes to play nice. Beca takes a deep breath and keeps her mouth shut, only speaking when spoken to for the rest of the dinner.

“Shut up.” 

These are Chloe’s first words when the pair walks through the door at the end of the day. Beca grins teasingly at her and she can see that Chloe’s trying to hold back a smile as well. 

“I didn’t say anything.” Beca protests as she takes off her shoes and falls back on the couch, watching Chloe from the living room. 

Chloe points an accusing finger at her as she rounds the couch and settles beside Beca. “But I know you want to. I know you too well.” But she’s smiling and Beca takes that as a good sight. 

Silence wraps around them for a second before Beca makes her last comment.

“Did you fish him out or somethi - “ 

She let’s out a belly laugh when a pillow hits her square in the face.
