if the agrestes weren't rich i think that gabriel would be the normal one. like gabe's problem is that he stopped running into natural limits due to absurd wealth and his obsessive nature led him to develop some kind of god complex where he won't accept that anything is out of his control. I think that if gabe was broke again and just simply couldn't afford to go on an international goose chase for ancient magic artifacts of untold power, if he had to work a 9-5 to live and couldn't just disappear into his basement lair to commit domestic terrorism and say evil monologues to himself, then he would be way more normal. he'd just be some guy. he might even let himself have a mowhawk again. but I think that emilie would be way LESS normal if they weren't rich. like emilie needs so many people to be obsessed with her so much all the time in order for her to function. and gabe would still have his toxic codependent obsession with her, sure, but that wouldn't be nearly enough. emilie has to be at the center of the world's spotlight at all times because she doesn't know how to exist if she's not performing. anyway all this to say I am so certain that if the agrestes were not disgustingly wealthy, emilie agreste would one million percent be running a massive family vlogger youtube channel

the arryn line has died out so many times they always have a backup line ready to be the next arryn, these bitches are just sooooo bad at living. everyoneā€™s always picking on the starks for getting nearly wiped out but damn ned & cat really hunkered down and repopulated the hell out of the family tree, like the starklings arenā€™t doing that bad, meanwhile you just like, sneeze too hard in the direction of the eyrie and the whole arryn line is on the brink of extinction, but itā€™s okay, they follow strict osha guidelines in the vale and they have a protocol for this very common scenario

iā€™ve always kind of assumed that lo and li are azulonā€™s younger twin sisters and thatā€™s why they were foisted off on azula, because sheā€™s also a younger sister to the crown prince. but the fact that we never actually see them firebend is strange, because it implies either that nonbenders are instructing one of the greatest firebenders in the world, or that they are firebenders who simply do not firebend. and i think that the latter is more interesting, because it reflects how their position as elderly women devalues any firepower they might provide to the empire, passive and subdued even as they train ozaiā€™s favorite weapon.
they are the ones to most overtly illustrate azulaā€™s precarious relationship to femininity, after all. for example, noting the position of her hair after she successfully lightningbends in ā€œthe avatar state,ā€ or emphasizing azulaā€™s beauty when they introduce her in ā€œthe awakening.ā€ and itā€™s clear that azula doesnā€™t really like them, dismisses and avoids them whenever she gets the chance. she canā€™t even tell them apart. their very existence is almost a humiliation. a reminder to azula that this is who she is destined to become once she lives past her usefulness. not the imperious azulon, her namesake, raised above on a fiery dais, but his sisters, insignificant and functionally powerless.
so of course ā€œalmost isnā€™t good enough,ā€ of course ā€œone hair out of placeā€ is a failure. the only way azula can prove her worth to the empire she has devoted her entire self to in a way that matters is, perhaps, by being perfect, by being better and stronger than the discarded women who came before her. but that, too, is a delusion, that any amount of excellence will reward her in a way that compensates for the erosion of her very humanity. and yet, itā€™s all she has to cling to. so she gives it her all to excel within a system that will never really care about her because she has deliberately been made incapable of imagining an alternative. of simply recognizing the system for the failure that it is, conceptualizing a world beyond the bars of her gilded cage, and leaving.

Ghost has a massive soft spot when it comes to kids and really only kids. He feels for them, and it bothers him to no end if he sees a kid being treated unfairly in any way.
Soap assumes that Ghost wouldn't really like kids, or at the very least by uncomfortable or uncertain with them being around, but he's FLOORED by the smack in the face of how wrong he was.
He brings Ghost around to meet his family for one reason or another (fake-dating, """just as friends""", officially dating, whatever floats your boat for the meeting The family trope LMAO), and his whole family is there. He's partially expecting Ghost to bail at the first opportunity that shows itself, and he doesn't blame him seeing all the chaos. Instead, he sees ghost begin interacting with his neices and nephews as soon as all the greetings have been gotten over with, and from what he can tell they all love ghost already.
Soap's sister walks right up beside her dumbfounded brother and gives him a nudge, saying something along the lines of "you just lost your status as the favorite uncle." Soap of course curses her out and shoo's her away, but he isn't really bothered at all by the idea of that. Not when Simon looks so happy telling stories and giving life advice to the kiddos, their faces sparkling with wonder.
When the gathering has quieted down, and people have begun returning to their own homes or wherever they were staying Soap pulls Ghost aside to have a moment with him.
"I never thought you'd be so good with kids L.T., I thought it would be the opposite really." Soap would say, and Ghost would give him a whisful expression before turning away.
"I know I don't seem it, but I was-... I am a family man at heart" Simon would admit, quiet and spoken out into the night, almost as if Soap wasn't supposed to hear the admission.
"It looks good on you Simon." Soap would state simply. "I think I ought to bring you round with my family more often, you're the kid's favorite uncle now after all."

Okay, my brain refuses to think about anything other than Murderbot, so I looked at every use of the word "friend[s]" in TMBD and... created some pie charts. Normal human activities.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some Thoughtsā„¢ I had while putting this together (under the cut):
In All Systems Red, Murderbot notes that the PresAux crew are all close friends (twice! and goes on to explain their internal relationships which I think is very cute). This is pretty much the only use of 'friends' in ASR, except for when Murderbot says that SecUnits can't be friends with each other.
It seems that this may be one of the first times Murderbot has ever really been around a group of friends before? Murderbot notes that this is not the norm for its contracts and admits that the fact that they are all friends and the way they interact with each other make it actually enjoy that contract (before!!!! the hostile attack, so it already enjoys this contract before they start seeing it as a person etc ghghhhh). [Inference: Friendship seems enjoyable.]
The first character that calls Murderbot its friend is ART in Artificial Condition. Murderbot immediately refutes this (and then goes on to call ART its friend to its clients for the rest of the book). [Inference: Maybe ART is Murderbot's friend. And maybe that is... agreeable]
Rogue Protocol has more than twice as many instances of the word 'friend' as any of the other novellas. Why? Miki. Friendship and its implications for non-humans are a central theme because Miki is friends with everyone. Murderbot initially scoffs at the notion that Miki and Miki's humans are friends. At the end of the book, after witnessing how desperately Don Abene tried to stop Miki from trying to save them, and her grief after its death, Murderbot has to admit that she had in fact been Miki's friend. [Inference: Humans can be friends with bots and can sincerely care about them]
In Exit Strategy, Murderbot tentatively uses the word "friends" for its humans for the first time (several times actually). It questions whether it can actually call them its friends or not and later realizes that it had been afraid what admitting that the humans are its friends would do to it. At the end of the book, Mensah tells Murderbot the PresAux crew are its friends, which is the first time a human has directly said that to it (at least on-page). [Inference: Humans can and want to be Murderbot's friends]
In Network Effect, Murderbot seems to be more habituated to the word 'friend', confidently calling ART and Ratthi its friends, like it is no longer just trying the concept on unsure if it fits. There are many instances in which other characters refer to MB as ART's friend or the other way around and Murderbot's humans refer to Murderbot as their friend several times. Generally, there seems to be less hesitancy, because yes, all of them are Murderbot's friends, why wouldn't they be. [Inference: SecUnits can have friends. This SecUnit has friends. They care about it a lot.]
Conclusion: The Murderbot Diaries tell the story of a construct that does not seem to consider the possibility of friendship for itself and is fine with that - until it accidentally starts caring a little too much and suddenly more and more people annex it as a friend (ew) to the point where it can no longer deny that this is happening and has to begrudgingly admit that yes, it has friends now and maybe that is actually not a bad thing.

had a conversation last week with a 10 year old girl about the s5 finale and i canā€™t stop thinking about it. she said nathalie is the best because she loves adrien enough to lie to him about his father so that he stays happy. completely convinced that emilie was resurrected at the end and shocked when i suggested otherwise. iā€™ve been dying to know what the children think happened and itā€™s so interesting

Iā€™ve been thinking and wondering šŸ¤” if they do increase Liliaā€™s life span, itā€™s probably not going to be hundreds of years. It will probably be longer but not as long as that (though I wish it were, because I know he wanted to see Malleus become king, etc)
So then if they do increase it, or maybe the years he has left is less than a hundred years, but as Malleus said; Lilia doesnā€™t want any one of them wasting their time on him when they could be living their life to the fullest.
In either case, wouldnā€™t it be heart breaking and yet poetic, for Lilia and Silver to have lived their life and then died at the same time? šŸ¤”
Though if thatā€™s the case, I wouldnā€™t be able to be as strong as Malleus, because loosing my father and brother at the same time?? That would break me if I was in his shoes šŸ’”šŸ˜
You can also imagine the heartbreak Sebek would go through if his aging slowed down too you know? The pain he would feel.
But then, it also makes me wonder šŸ¤”, it could also be half a century or the ā€œremainderā€ of human years.
Because the whole point of his actions is that Lilia wants his sons to move on, to enjoy life, make bonds, and be happy. See life to the fullest as he has, enjoy life with the same joy his boys has brought him. He wants the same for them šŸ„¹
In the end, it might just be that. Lilia living like a ā€œhumanā€ seeing his boys grow and become the fine men they are and being proud of them all the while.
As any parent would.
Because isnā€™t that a parentā€™s wish? To see their children grow up, see them come into their own, know they will be fine, and once the time comes, they can happily pass with a smile. šŸ„¹šŸ˜šŸ’ž
