Songs of Accidental Evils: River.
Last year, I did a series on this blog where I talked about the playlist behind my first book, CIVIL BLOOD. I got a lot of good feedback from that and people overwhelmingly wanted me to do it again for the sequel, ACCIDENTAL EVILS. This book has a much darker tone, and its playlist was easily split into three parts: the general vibe of the book, songs related to River (the male MC), and songs related to Fina (the female MC).
In no particular order, these are the songs related to River’s arc. If you don’t care for an explanation and just wanna hear the songs, here’s a link to the part 2 playlist!
1. I And Love And You – The Avett Brothers.
Tough song about moving on. And the reason there’s a place called Brooklin. “We are headed north. One foot in and one foot back, but it don’t pay to live like that. So I cut the ties and I jump the tracks.” “What you were then I am today, look at the things I do.”
2. Close To Me – Ballyhoo!
This song is all about River and Sparrow to me - how dependent they are on each other, how they have to let each other go to get what they want, and how they need each other too much to do what’s best for both of them. “All these things I do to keep you close to me. And everyday’s another day from what we used to be.”
3. Prodigal – OneRepublic.
River is the prodigal son. “Run away, run away so predictable.” “I’ll take everything from you, but you’ll take anything, won’t you?”
4. Nude – Radiohead.
This song is how it would sound in my head if I were River and I was being warped and brainwashed by the Elders. “Don’t get any big ideas, they’re not gonna happen. You’ll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking.”
5. This is Gospel (piano version) – Panic at the Disco.
This song basically spells out everything that goes on with River, Sparrow, Barton Heights as a whole. Every lyric applies. Apostates, imposters, false gospels and prophets, letting go of the one you love, hypocrisy, gnashing teeth, the end of the world, belonging to no one...yeah. All of it.
6. Barton Hollow – The Civil Wars.
Many people asked me where Barton got its name from...this song. This song influenced this series this much. Keep that in mind. “Ain’t goin back to Barton Hollow, Devil gonna follow me e’er I go. Won’t do me no good, washing in the river. Can’t no preacher man save my soul.”
7. The Pretender – Foo Fighters.
“Keep you in the dark, you know they all pretend.” This song is for the moment in which the tide turns for River. It’s what I hear when he’s running...at a certain spoiler-y point.
8. Starving Your Friends – Envy on the Coast.
This is a song about realizing that you’re nothing like you thought you were, and you’ll never be who you wanted to be. “I could swear that I don’t care but you know I’m too full of shit to think this through. So look at me, I pray to god but curse too much to be considered true.”
9. The Sweetness - Jimmy Eat World.
I don’t know why this song makes me cry. But it does. “I’m still running away, won’t play your hide and seek games. I was spinning free, with a little sweet and simple numbing me.”
10. Drive - Incubus.
There’s a whole lotta driving to do in River’s story. But my favorite part of this is “Whatever tomorrow brings I’ll be there, with open arms and open eyes.” Because River and Sparrow will be there for each other always. Even if it’s better for them not to be.
11. Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters - Elton John.
This song just reminds me of two people we meet in this story. “You stand at the edge while people run you through. And I thank the lord there’s people out there like you.”
12. Capsize - Frenship & Emily Warren.
Whoo boy another song which can make me cry for no reason. The entire song is a back and forth between River and Sparrow in my mind. Realizing what they put each other through, and how they’re growing apart. And all the parts I attribute to River also follow how he’s feeling re: not knowing who he is.
13. Irresistible - Fall Out Boy.
There’s a sick sadistic satisfaction in the way River acts in this book. He loves to hurt and be hurt. “Secondhand smoke, I breathe you in but honey I don’t know what you’re doing to me, mon cherie, but the truth catches up with us eventually.”
14. Hold Me Down – Halsey.
Wrestling. With. His. Demons. Is. What. River. Matthews. Does. Best. He’ll wrestle your demons too if you want, he’s really good. “I sold my soul to a three-piece, and he told me I was holy. He’s got me down on both knees.”
15. Famous Last Words - My Chemical Romance.
A lot of changing tides and shifting blame in this song. “I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this world alone. Honey if you stay, I’ll be forgiven. Nothing you can say could stop me goin’ home.”
16. Wires - The Neighbourhood.
Perfect encapsulation of the relationship between Papa and River and how it does - or doesn’t? - decay.
17. The Beach - The Neighbourhood.
This song could be between River and Sparrow or River and Fina, depending on your interpretation. “Swim with me, I think I could see the beach. Just don’t look underneath us. I need you here with me, but we’re out in the open.”
18. Head First In the River - Envy On the Coast.
This is the realization song I think. “And it's my job, to smile while pigs feast, swallows slop out of the hand of a crooked priest. The mantra they sell, it stings like hell and they know not to ask or think or tell. Play in the mud like good girls and boys and we'll feed you the shit that we're sure we can sell.”
19. Passing the Hat - Cold War Kids.
More hypocrisy! I just love this song.
20. The High Road - Joss Stone.
This was the song I considered River’s theme song for ACCIDENTAL EVILS until I heard #25. The whole thing is so perfect for his journey into realizing that his aspirations were all lies and his life may not even be real. “This army has so many heads, are you one of us?”
21. Alligator Skin Boots - McCafferty.
“And the pastor says I’m good, but Jesus Christ I’m never good. I’ll nail my hands up to the wall.” Self-doubt, sin, transgression, shame, fear. So so so River in Act 1.
22. Leaving Tonight - The Neighbourhood.
“I figured it all to be love, but this isn’t lovely. All alone, all we know is haunting me, making it harder to breathe.”
23. In the Sun - Joseph Arthur.
This is after the after pretty much. “I was caught in between all you wish for and all you need. I picture you fast asleep, a nightmare comes, you can’t keep away. May god’s love be with you, always.”
24. Ill With Want - The Avett Brothers.
Totally sums up River in the beginning of the book, trying to figure out what he can’t remember, what’s missing in his life. Why he’s not acting right. “Something has me acting like someone I don’t wanna be. Ill with want and poisoned by this ugly grief.”
25. And Saints - Sleigh Bells.
Oh god this song. This. Song. Every single lyric applies to River. This inspired the whole last chapter of Act 2. It breaks my heart.
26. City Traffic Puzzle - The Hush Sound.
Beginning of Act 2 major feels with River and Sparrow. “Rain’s on in a city traffic puzzle, shifting pieces just like my stomach. We’re both so upset. I don’t wanna love you if love leaves me this cold.”
27. Paint’s Peeling - Rilo Kiley. Sparrow’s song.
“And I feel nothing, not sane. It’s a hard day for dreaming, again. And oh, I’m not goin back to the assholes that made me in a perfect display of random acts of hopelessness.”
28. Sugarcane - Sleigh Bells.
Sleigh Bells pretty much wrote this book, if you couldn’t tell. This song reminds me of those first days after the end of CIVIL BLOOD for River.
29. Reapers - Muse.
I mean this is self-explanatory. “Home, it’s becoming a killing field. There’s a crosshair locked on my heart.”
30. Little Talks -Of Monsters and Men.
How River and Sparrow used to be. And how they want to be again.
31. Cold Cold Cold - Cage the Elephant.
Mad spoilers. Just trust me. “Cold inside, darker in the day than the dead of night.”
