Poet and Painter
Until 24th September 2023, Tate Britain is hosting an exhibition about the radical Rossetti family, focusing on their attitudes to art, love and lifestyles. Arguably, Dante Gabriel Rosetti is the most famous of the siblings, and his paintings make The Rossettis a remarkable exhibition. It has been over twenty years since Rossetti’s artwork has been on display in retrospective fashion, and it is a…

Incipit Vita Nova
Tumblr media
“So that all ended with her eyes, Hell, Purgatory, Paradise.”
-Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Dante at Verona-
In 1294, Dante Alighieri published his autobiographical prosimetrum, La Vita Nuova. Detailing his adoration for his muse, Beatrice Portinari, and adhering to the prevailing contemporary preference for courtly love—how via lyric one may arrive at transcendent intellectual truths and their consequential blessings—he frames it fondly as his little book, a volume of “la loro sentenzia”. Art as it pertains to self, to existence; or thus, in translation, words imbued with essential meaning.
At the outset, he writes:
“Nine times, the heaven of the light had returned to where it was at my birth, almost to the very same point of its orbit, when the glorious lady of my mind first appeared before my eyes—she whom many called Beatrice without even knowing that was her name. She had already been in this life long enough for the heaven of the fixed stars to have moved toward the east a twelfth of a degree since she was born, so that she was at the beginning of her ninth year when she appeared to me, and I saw her when I was almost at the end of my ninth. She appeared, dressed in a very stately colour, a subdued and dignified crimson, girdled and adorned in a manner that was fitting for her young age.
At that time, truly, I say, the vital spirit, which dwells in the innermost chamber of the heart, started to tremble so powerfully that its disturbance reached all the way to the slightest of my pulses. And trembling it spoke these words: “Ecce deus fortior me, qui veniens dominabitur michi.” Here is a god stronger than I, who comes to rule me.
[...]
From then on, I swear that Love dominated my soul, which was wedded to him so early, and began to rule me with such confidence and power, by means of the force my imagination lent him, there was no choice but for me to do whatever he wanted. Time after time he ordered me to search for where I might glimpse this youthful angel; so that in my boyhood I went searching for her often, and observed that her bearing was so dignified and praiseworthy that it can truly be said of her as Homer wrote: “She did not seem the daughter of a mortal man, but rather of a god.” And even though her image, which was constantly with me, was the means by which Love ruled me, it was so dignified in its power that it never allowed Love to govern me without the faithful counsel of reason, in those matters where such guidance was helpful. Since dwelling on the passions and actions of one so young is like telling a tall tale, I will leave that behind; and passing over many things that could be copied from the same source, I come to words written in my memory under larger paragraphs.”
As sources of revelations go, both passage and preface continue to intrigue those minds predisposed to such concepts as romantic symmetry, its Platonic roots, and the symbiotic interplay between the metaphysical and the aesthetic—power pitched as mortal yet no less potent in its core sublimity than that wielded by a cosmic hand, divine. But my sense of who I am is somewhat less of a fated dominion and more of a chosen whole. My “far reaches of beatitude” have pooled here, in me. A juxtapositional miracle, perhaps—to be transported back and somehow on. And fuck, how the weight has lifted. And no, I can’t know the degree of permanence. No one can. Because Beatrice may be conjured forth—the “lo mi senti’ svegliar dentro a lo core” or “I felt my heart awaken”—but there are no Cassandras to proffer more. Nor do I need them.
Instead a fine tranquility settles where the grief once lived in stages too numerous to list. “Vide cor tuum,” Dante writes. Behold your heart. Behold. Hence for the love of your life. Hence for hope. As for vision, it is here—deep where I’ve stolen from the crowd and made myself a space to dwell in devotionals and freedoms. Ones that only I know, we know, as close to perfect as we float and sentient of scars.
Darling dream, September—amongst the mythic forecast, I am me. Within or out; it’s all the same, this magic and this constance. And when they ask, “Per cui t’ha così distrutto questo Amore?”—Over whom are you so wrecked by Love?—I will look at them, as Dante does, smile “and tell them nothing”.

She sounded so like Sansa, so happy and innocent with her dreams
Tumblr media
So there is magic beyond the Wall after all. He found himself thinking of his sisters, perhaps because he'd dreamed of them last night. Sansa would call this an enchantment, and tears would fill her eyes at the wonder of it
Tumblr media
So the singer played for her, so soft and sad that Arya only heard snatches of the words, though the tune was half-familiar. Sansa would know it, I bet. Her sister had known all the songs, and she could even play a little, and sing so sweetly
Tumblr media
Lady Catelyn had said that Sansa was a gentle soul who loved lemon cakes, silken gowns, and songs of chivalry, yet the girl had seen her father's head lopped off and been forced to marry one of his killers afterward. If half the tales were true, the dwarf was the cruelest Lannister of all. If she did poison King Joffrey, the Imp surely forced her hand. She was alone and friendless at that court
Tumblr media
“I like the fighting stories. My sister Sansa likes the kissing stories”

hi wes! chronic pain is a bitch, and i hope you feel better asap
the artwork that moved me the most upon seeing in person is rossetti's beata beatrix. it's both haunting/ cursed and sublime
i've got a question for you - what artwork would you recommend seeing to everyone wanting to know you better, like an "about the blogger", but in the form of art? maybe not a single one, just anything of any medium
Thanks! I agree - I've had some food, taken some medicine and just hanging out with a heating pad so hopefully it stops soon! That's a beautiful piece, the glow of her hair backlit is incredible. That's a good question. I love so many different art movements & artists. I love surrealism, and I really love super intricate frames - Like more often than not I'm photographing pieces in museums because the frames are just so beautiful. But the one that really is like a get to know me better- I think I would be the Malene Landgreen exhibition at the GL strand in Copenhagen. I saw it in person, and it was incredible. Not only her work which was so evocative but also the space, the architectural details of all the galleries, - actually I'll share some photos from the exhibition We spent so long in that gallery. and I honestly could have stayed longer.

The amazing digital circus: employee lineup ( in theme song order)
Part 1: Beatrix Mayrel
Tumblr media
Beatrix didn't have the best start. From losing her parents when she was 13, to being bullied in highschool for her anime love and body pillow.
In college, she became more secret about her interest that no one was involved with, she ended up with a couple of friends of her own. She got a job as a songwriter and later conductor for the Caine & Able entertainment company.
She made a family bond with Reggie and Ruth kingpin (the creators of the amazing digital circus ip.) They even let her voice a character in an unreleased special. She was heartbroken when they went "missing" in 2000, in this desperation she tried to solve their disappearance and made friends who were later taken to the game.
She didn't figure out what happened to beata testers until the last work day of the year 2004 when she found jason (the ceos son) killed off after playing.
On January 8th 2005, they shipped her last words and data packages of her research to the police getting the ceo removed from the company and replaced by a more moral CEO. She joined the circus and stabbed herself with her baton two days later.

Who Paints the Portrait
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stowe gives an "intimate" portrait of the interior of Uncle Tom's Cabin, in chapter IV "An Evening in Uncle Tom's Cabin."
Tumblr media
Uncle Tom's cabin is decorated with "brilliant scriptural prints" and "a portrait of General Washington, drawn and colored in a manner which would certainly have astonished that hero, if he ever happened to meet with its like." Drawn by who? Adorned with what intention?
Tumblr media
The bedroom is an especially vulnerable place. The portraits that christen the walls of one's inner sanctuary come with a story. For me, the decadent angel with hands clasped, in my own room, pays reverence to the mirror. Even higher hangs a print of Dante Rossetti's "Beata Beatrix" and a postcard of "Love's Greeting." I could explain their personal significance but I think, like Stowe, I'll leave you with the mention and nothing more. (Well actually, a little more, I give you the name of the artist at least.) I'm struggling to understand what we're supposed to understand from these descriptions. Something about it feels uncomfortably performative yet voyeuristic. Stowe chooses to focus on the details of these characters' interactions with their space yet it feels entirely constructed and without semblance of the character's own authority.
Stowe goes on to narrate portraits of her own construction:
Tumblr media
"woolly headed boys, with glistening black eyes, and fat shining cheeks"
Tumblr media
"we must daguerreotype for our readers" "a large, broad-chested, powerfully-made man" "full glossy black" "truly African features" "kindliness" "benevolence" "self-respecting" "dignified" "humble simplicity"
What is Stowe doing here? She's so specific in her descriptions. She repeats these themes of glistening and shining, glossy. Only now she bestows (haha be-Stowes) moral features? I think the idyllic scene she depicts is meant to romanticize the life of Uncle Tom and perhaps create some sense of sympathy or reverence in the audience. But as a modern reader, it leaves an odd impression, reminiscent of the uncanny valley, where everything's a little too perfect, and something terrible is about to happen.

Victorian Era
Aesthetic Movement
In the mid-victorian era 1870-1880 a group of talented artists, poets, writers and some actors were known as the Aesthetes.
The Aesthetics views on the dress was influenced by artists such as Dante Gabrielle Rossetti and William Morris and their circle. Artists like these had began to take interest in fashion as an improvement area of study and design. They preferred flowing form and fabric over the traditional Victorian corseted silhouette, they took inspiration from classical, medieval and Renaissance periods. They then began to design dresses which were initially intended to be worn as costumes for sitters whilst paintings, this gradually filtered through to more women.

The Aesthetic fashion was a looser cut and was unstructured with movement, the garments had larger sleeves coming from the style of medieval or Renaissance garments. Many elements also came from Greek, Roman Gothic, Georgian, Far East, Middle East and Japanese styles.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Rossetti was the original founds of Pre-Raphaelites Brotherhood who lead a colourful life and created beautiful art. His paintings were intensely spiritual pictures one of his wife who died in 1862, the bird in the painting is a messenger of death carrying a poppy, twin figures are Dante and love in the background, Beatrix has her eyes closed and her face looking upwards as if she is in a trance, a sundial marking 9 o’clock the hour of her death, the poppy is also a symbol of death.
