Summary - What John is witnessing is based on Eze 47, where a river flows from the sanctuary and brings life to all nature, and the trees never fail. This scene in Revelation returns us to paradise; a restoring of the garden of Eden and the tree of life that we have been cut off from for so long. Isa 65 also describes the world made new with peace and delight. Lady wisdom is called a tree of life in Pro 3:18.  In Eze 31, Egypt and Assyria are compared to a mighty tree that became so proud it had to be broken down and sent to the underworld “with the trees of Eden”.

Animal Sentai Zyuohger - Final Episode

Let’s finish the fight.

-PREVIOUSLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, the crew rejected the idea of isolation, choosing to fight for a brighter tomorrow! And now, that fight has come to them…

-As PRESENTLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, Genis is more amused than anything else, ready to play this game out to the end…His bloodlust, his desire for destruction, is near overwhelming…

-And with his usage of Cube Whale’s data, he can draw from the Earth. This planet, is under his ownership, Zyuohgers…

-They make a charge, a furious war cry burning forth, as the final battle begins!

-Final Episode: Earth is our Home

-And the fight is on, but Genis is too damn fast and strong, able to outplay and overpower them…Gorilla’s strength, Tiger’s speed, none of it is enough, and then they’re swept up into darkness!

-Into a pocket dimension, as created by Genis. A space where he controls the rules. As Eagle tries to figure out a plan…And he realizes something, as he looks in deep…This pocket space is made up of mook coins! And Genis, seeing what they’ve figured out, bombards them…

-The pocket space collapses, their armors fail…And Naria, barely alive, staggers her way up to the battlefield.

-While Genis, Genis is furious…Because Yamato figured it out. Genis is nothing but a collective mass of mooks! A bundling of fury and hate! And Naria sees his shape collapse momentarily, when the hatred becomes too much…

-As Misao puts it all together. Genis hates himself. The bravado, the attempting to be above it all, the Blood Game…Fuck, why he picked Misao to turn into The World, over any other human on the board! It was because Misao hated himself in turn, and Genis knew how to use that!

-The others rally around Misao…You are nothing like him. You care so deeply for others. You seek nothing but others’ happiness. You are a good man, Misao, and there’s nothing of Genis in you, no matter what that piece of shit claims to have seen.

-Naria leaps in, choosing to stand with him to the end, her loyalty overwhelming…And Genis…

-Genis shoots right through her as the others transform, shattering their transformation and destroying their Symbols in their moment of vulnerability. He had a chance to be different, to turn away from his path…And he cast it aside. He killed the one person in the entire fucking universe who could actually care for him…He fires upon the wounded crew, trying to kill them utterly, to take them off the board…

-But they endure! This fight’s not over! Their lives aren’t over! You had a chance to back down, Genis…You had a chance to become more than you were. But now? Now, they’re going to take you down. For their planet. For their friends. For the people they love! For everything awaiting them!

-They charge forth, without even their armors…But they begin to glow, as the Earth itself responds, pouring its raw energy into their Symbols, into Misao’s Light…! The Earth has chosen. The planet itself has decided, that you are its champions!

-And thus, Instincts Awakened! Champion of the soaring sky…ZYUOH EAGLE! Champion of the surging waves…ZYUOH SHARK! Champion of the savannah…ZYUOH LION! Champion of the forest… ZYUOH ELEPHANT! Champion of the snowy drifts…ZYUOH TIGER! Champion of the world, ZYUOH THE WORLD! Animal Sentai, ZYUOHGER!

-Their planet, is under protection! Beast UNLEASHED! By the strength of their will, these six enter the fray, and it’s a totally different game now…Genis is powerful, sure, but the Earth itself has rejected his presence, and they have too much will to be stopped! Even when he manages to push them back, they rally, unique, as the Earth’s power comes aglow…

-And Eagle manages to do as The World does. All, Beasts, UNLEASHED! His muscles swell, wings spread from his back, and the Whale Cannon straps itself on! The power is overwhelming, terrifying, as he takes to the sky, forcing Genis to face him in the air!

-This planet is his home! These people are his precious friends! And this power, is the gift given to him to protect them! He’s able to blast Genis into the ground, shred his wings, and rally the whole team for a hyper-charged, prismatic ZYUOH FINAL shot! No coursing up and down, no splitting, just a single straight beam right into Genis’s fucking chest…

-Shattering his memory unit full of Cube Whale’s data, and blowing him through! His connection to the Earth is destroyed, and the whole crew just about collapses…

-But then he gets big. And they’ve got to call in backup. Complete Animal Combination! ALL TOGETHER! WILD TOUSAI DODEKA KING! The fight is on, against a reduced but embiggened Genis…Without his connection, he’s back in his life support chair, running on fumes…Against the strength of so much.

-Zyuman power, the raw life force that fuels their strength. Human will, that can bind and forge connections across impossible gaps. The planet’s will and strength at their back! Their Zyuoh Cubes, these ancient totems of power that have chosen them! And their own connection, their refusal to abandon each other! You don’t face one, Genis. You don’t even face six. You face everything!

-ZYUOH DODEKA SHOT! Their blast knocks Genis back, opens him up, as they pour it all in…ZYUOH, DODEKA, GRAND FINAL FINISH! It is an orb of energy that fires forth, the planet itself in micro, the strength and hopes of all that has ever been born on this planet, of every sunset and every love, of all that still shall ever be…And it all tears him apart to nothing.

-It’s over. It’s over so quickly…And that leaves them with what’s a much harder job. They protected their homes…Now they need to change them.

-Everyone’s fucking exhausted by the time they return to the Link Cube…And this is goodbye, for a short while. They need to return. They need to explain. And they need to bring about change on their end. But make no mistake, Yamato and Misao…This is not the end.

-But Misao is still close to tears, and Yamato admits, with more candidness than he is used to, that he’s going to miss them…They’re more than friends. They’re family. And he’s going to be thinking of them, until the very moment they reunite.

-Then comes their time…All the Symbols, and the Grand Champion Symbol, are locked into the Link Cube, as it glows bright…Its damage is healed by all that energy…And then? It starts to spin wildly and rise into the air…!

-Its energy courses through the planet…As cuboid towers start to emerge in the cities! From the cabin, to the hospital, to the middle of the city, zyumen find themselves amongst humans?!

-The Link Cube…Something happened. When they reforged the Link Cube, with everything…It reset the Link Cube back to zero. It undid the initial severing.

-The Link Cube vanishes, as the Symbols come back down to these Champions…And now…Now they’re left with a lot of questions, and so much uncertainty. …But one thing is certain. This new world will need their help. To help guide people through coexistence. To stand by them through difficult times. And if a threat comes upon them once again? To fight.

-Of course, they have so much to see and to do…Each has to reunite with their families. Sela finds her brother and parents by the water. Leo finds his whole pack taking up residence in a park. Amu returns to her mother, who’s started a little restaurant…And Tusk finds his father, and needs to talk.

-As things slowly settle, Misao and Larri find themselves becoming ambassadors and educators, and Misao, Misao finally finds peace, as he’s helping craft a world that the three whose lives were thrust into him would be proud of…

-Mario ends up making friends with the three who appeared in his cabin. And Bard spends a brief time with Yamato’s father, as both have made decisions to see what’s important…Bard wants to see this world, wants to travel and see its beauty. And Yamato’s father…He’s realized he needs to connect with his son, and do what he should have done so long ago. Both are a little gentler, a little kinder, and a lot wiser, than they were when they met last…

-And as for Yamato himself, well…He keeps doing what he’s been doing. Trying to live by the creed his mother taught him. That all things are connected, and all deserve a hand outstretched in aid.

-Credits!

-Aand the handoff.

Okay, we gotta talk that ending. Because that was fucking great. Zyuohger, like a lot of Super Sentai shows, had its problems with spinning its wheels in the middle…But that right there, that made it all worth it.

I would have liked to see more of Genis’s whole Deal, maybe by revealing it more explicitly sooner, if only to the audience. It’s such an interesting angle, that it’s a shame that we don’t get any more time to examine his actions in light of it.

But man, that whole ending, the sheer hope it contains with how we can forge new connections, and those connections can make us better than we were…There is so much to take in there, and it is a delight.

Like, I had a whole thing I was gonna talk about with the critiques of the show, but that…Damn, that just knocked so much of what I had to say out of the park.

But, okay. Let’s get into it. Right out the gate, I gotta say, the character beats and storytelling were this season’s absolute strength. It nailed the “out of suit” stuff better than a lot of Super Sentai. Even within the limits of being a comedy-action show for young children, they were able to bring a lot of depth, and a lot of real weight to the characters.

So where’s the weak point?

The “in the suit” stuff. Ultimately, it’s not even that a lot of the fights were bad…It’s that they were the same thing I’ve seen before. And sure, yeah, I’m well outside of the target demo, but a typical kid’s going to see at least a few seasons of this damn show before they age out of it.

The mecha fights, especially, were rough and really felt like contractual obligations more than anything the creators really wanted to do interesting stuff with. Particularly because, I mean, you have this whole idea that everything starts with the Cube forms, which inherently can be put in any order. I know that wouldn’t work as well for play, but it’s a serious shame that we saw so little of the idea.

And, to the same token, the on-foot fights were…I mean, they weren’t bad, but they had too few elements to work with. Four members of the team only have a gun, a sword, and their Beast Unleashed power…And two of them effectively have the same power!

While I can see the argument that, from a narrative perspective, you want to show humanity as being uniquely able to hold zyuman power from more than one form, hold multiple lives within them…I feel like if the others had gotten secondary forms like Yamato, it would have done so much to improve the show.

The best Super Sentai fights, generally, come from the choreographers being able to do crazy things and change the circumstances. I think it’s telling that some of the best fights in the series history came out of ToQger and Gokaiger, and it was almost entirely because of how often they could flip the rules of the fight.

So, yeah. If it were me and I were retooling this series from top to bottom, I think the one big thing I’d do is introduce a new set of forms for the four. Something from the smaller Cube Animals, perhaps, like armor that could strap on, or some way for a zyuman to grant some small fraction of their power as a ‘blessing’ to the Symbols (as opposed to the large scale transfers to save Yamato’s life and build Misao into a human weapon). And then like I said, reveal Genis’s deal sooner, at least to the audience, so we can watch him front and struggle and know that’s what we’re seeing.

But overall? That was damn good.

So what’s next? …Real talk, I need some light fluff right now, so I think we’re diving into a comedy. Come back and see that next time, with a new episode ONE! Wait for it!

Animal Sentai Zyuohger - Episode 47

We’re almost at the end. Just two more to go. Let’s see how it ends. It’s Animal Sentai Zyuohger, episode 47! Here we GO!

-PREVIOUSLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, Azald went down and Yamato was left with countless difficult facts he can’t square the circle on.

-And PRESENTLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, everyone but Yamato is at the cabin, telling Mario what happened…And Misao tells them what he saw in Yamato. His fury and rage, and despair…

-Mario is thankful that Amu and the others pushed Yamato, though. You’ve helped him grow into someone stronger…But right now, it’s just a difficult thing he’s got to go through.

-While Yamato is at his mother’s grave, seeking answers…When the entire sky is overtaken by an image of Genis, as he tells them it’s the final shot…The Big Bow draws its string back, its central arrow piercing down into the center of the city as a massive tower! Genis’s own cells are being injected into the Earth, to turn the planet to his own end…!

-Explosions rock outwards from the point of impact as his energy pumps through, the power surging through he planet…The others race out there, trying to figure out a plan…

-And Yamato snaps up to go, to fight…When his father is there. And begs him to stop, to keep himself safe, because what would she think?

-Yamato cracks, slapping the flowers right out of his father’s hands. You don’t get to invoke her name! And both men just stare each other down, as the tension grows…

-Opening!

-Episode 47: The Last Game

-The others are stopped by a customized mech, with a whole set of mooks! But they can’t let this stop them! Instincts Awakened!

-Down by the river, Bard sees the chaos in the city…And he’s ready to fight. But Larri grabs his hand, stopping him…You gave up so much of your strength to save Yamato. That Symbol in your hand doesn’t channel your energy, but the Earth’s…And your body can’t take it. It’ll kill you.

-So what should he do? Let innocents die?! No. Larri has an idea…

-Back in the fight, the mooks go down fast, leaving this ferocious mech that eats a combination strike…But two more emerge from the fire! Genis is throwing out all stops!

-And at the grave, Yamato’s father prays, leaving the flowers at her grave…And Yamato’s still furious at his father for keeping these secrets from him, for being so distant, for, for everything! He barely knew his own father! All he had was his mother, and then she was gone too soon! He…He wanted to have a father in his life, dammit…

-His father, in turn, can only apologize, for he did his son so wrong in so many ways…But perhaps, now, the two can actually start to heal…

-Back at the fight, it’s a ZYUOH SLASH with The World backing them up…But the mechs keep coming…They need a way out of this situation…And that’s when all the Champion’s Symbols begin to chime? It’s a message as if from the Earth itself…As they cut through the mechs to give them some time, they realize they need to gather…

-While with Yamato, he’s got to go. He too is being called upon…This is what he has to do. His planet needs him…His friends need him. He’s going to fight. He’s going to win. And then…Then they’re going to have a long talk.

-And everyone finds themselves drawn to a single point…Where Larri and Bard have brought the Link Cube. Where Bard’s plan is to bring this thing back to life…And repeat what Cetas did so long ago. They’re going to isolate Earth, and sever the Big Bow’s connection entirely.

-The only problem is…That’ll also sever the connection to Zyuland…So Bard’s plan is to be the sacrificial lamb. They’re going to activate the Cube, let everyone get home, then he, Yamato and Misao will finish off Genis’s stragglers.

-…No. Not a single one of them is okay with this. Zyuland and Earth are meant to be together, to be bound!

-Back up at the Big Bow, Genis is curious about why things are so quiet, and so Naria goes to take a look…

-Which is when Tusk is the first to refuse. They’re not severing the connection between their peoples. They can change things for the better! And that’s when Yamato arrives, and backs them up…Here’s the plan. Here’s how this is going to go down. They’re going to fight Genis. They’re going to beat Genis. And then, they’re opening that damn Cube, and letting the peoples meet. Earth and Zyuland both will be protected, kept safe!

-And so, Larri realizes…It’s time to leave this to the next generation, who still have their hope. If anyone can change how this goes, it’s these six youths…

-Who race towards the city, to find Naria leading a whole squad of mechs…And it’s time for this to end, Naria! Your days of toying with planets are OVER!

-Instincts AWAKENED! Champion of the world, ZYUOH THE WORLD! Champion of the snowy drifts, ZYUOH TIGER! Champion of the forest, ZYUOH ELEPHANT! Champion of the savannah, ZYUOH LION! Champion of the surging waves, ZYUOH SHARK! Champion of champions, ZYUOH WHALE! Animal Sentai, ZYUOHGER!

-Zyuoh Cubes! Complete Animal Combination! ONE TWO THREE FOUR! FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT! NINE, TEN! ALL TOGETHER! WILD TOUSAI DODEKA KING! You want a war…Here’s your fucking war!

-They march right over Naria’s entire squad, trying to get to that damn arrow…But with fire boiling off of it, they can’t get close! They aim to sever the line, driving into it from above with the Mole Drill…But the line holds, despite their efforts…

-As Naria throws a whole set of continues into her mechs, and then bites down on one herself to get big enough to threaten the team…As soon as she’s fighting Wild Tousai Dodeka King herself, backed up by her squad….I mean, until they get blasted down by heavy weapons, and Whale leads a second charge into that damn drill…

-It won’t yield…But what if, instead, they use that strength against it…! You’re coming DOWN! They start to rip on the line, trying to pull the entire Big Bow out of orbit, as Naria panics!

-And thus eats a ZYUOH DODEKA DYNAMITE STREAM front and center, forcing her to ground. Her life ends then and there, her service concluded…As they go to the line, pouring their full will into it…And then it’s Beast Unleashed! All Beasts Unleashed! They pour their own strength into the mech, their own will turned into power, and BRING IT DOWN!

-The Big Bow crashes into the mountainside, its own sheer weight ripping the arrow out of the ground…But through the wreckage, Genis still emerges by the time they go to investigate…

-This fight’s not over. And now, there’s no way to stop or prevent what’s coming…

-Credits!

Animal Sentai Zyuohger - Episode 43

Okay, let’s squeeze this in. It’s Animal Sentai Zyuohger, episode 43! Here we GO!

-We begin in the Big Bow, where Azald is playing darts. With nobody else playing the Blood Game, Azald is out of urgency-fucks to give…But Genis reminds him that Kubar’s little rebellion was absolutely a fine entry in the game. You’re going to need to outdo it to get anywhere…

-While down on Earth, Misao arrives at the cabin, having finished his proper hospital release! And he’s brought Mario a fine gift, a top-notch whetstone for his carving tools.

-Of course, the zyumen don’t know Christmas, so Yamato has to explain the holiday to them, much to Mario’s bogglement…But the idea of a Christmas party has everyone fully engaged…When the girls grab Tusk and Leo and they’re off. Because they realized they haven’t done right by Mario. This man took them into his home, welcomed them into his life, treats them like his own family…A Christmas present might just be a small gesture, but it’s a symbolic one, and one they’re going to live up to.

-Opening!

-Episode 43: The Christmas Witness

-So thus begins the hunt. Their first effort is a lovely knitted sweater. …Except they don’t have anywhere near enough scratch to buy it. Leo and Amu indulged in foods, and Tusk spent not only the spending money that Yamato and Mario gave him, but his part-time job check, on books. It’s not like he knew there was a gift giving holiday coming up!

-But then, a vibe. What’s coming down? A devilish painter of an MotW, who puts emoticon masks on people that won’t come off! And he can even paint things into existence, like a Buddha statue manifesting in the middle of the street and causing a bunch of crashes!

-Our four arrive, already transformed…Aaand get a samurai sent after them. A samurai, a monk, and a clown! One of these things is not like the other. So the MotW makes his escape, while they finally fight off the painted foes…

-Back at the cabin, Yamato and Mario are putting up the Christmas tree. They haven’t had a party here since Yamato was a little kid…And then out comes the question about the others going back home for New Years. It’s…Complicated…

-Mario figured it was complicated. …Are they in a situation like yours, Yamato? No, no. Yamato’s staying away from his home. They…They can’t go home.

-…Whatever happens, Yamato, you can tell him anything. He’s always got your back.

-Back with the others, they’re grumbling about their lack of success in war and in Christmas both, when they pass by what looks like a stationary shop selling Christmas cakes? Surely you’d want to get your holiday goods from a bakery…

-But the owner comes out because this IS a bakery! That monster just painted over it with the facade of a stationary shop! And now he’s got no customers, at what’s supposed to be his busiest time of the year!

-And then Amu gets a plan. They need work, you need sold cakes, pay them to take a stock down to the park and sell them old school.

-And that’s how they find themselves down at the park…But nobody cares. Okay, they need a gimmick. …Right, fuck it. All out? All out.

-Which is when Misao races into the cabin, because big trouble! Check the news! …Oh god the others are selling cakes in full animal costumery. Why?!

-So that’s two absurd wrinkles in one shot, as Yamato and Misao have to go see what these ridiculous idiots are doing at the park…And…

-And, they’re actually having a lot of fun, and everyone seems happy, and Yamato can’t help but think, this is how it should be…You know?

-They’re soon back at the cake shop, with a hearty pay…And then it’s to the store to buy that sweater. …But they forgot to account for sales tax, and are literally like 500 yen short. FUUUUUCK. But Yamato finds them, and he’s got the difference, guys. And no complaining. He owes his uncle at least as much as the rest of you. …But the bad news is, he’s not going to be there for the party. He’s heading overseas for a few days. …Nope nope NOPE he is getting this sweater before he goes! Come on they gotta catch him!

-Of course, then they get vibes. And the MotW is on them! Welllll shit. This is, quite possibly, the worst time. Yamato and Misao step up, and the rest of you keep going! They’ve got this guy!

-…And then Azald corners them. Mother fuck! And that’s when Mario hears explosions as he’s heading to the airport, and turns to investigate and make sure people are okay…

-When the entire crew is rocked by explosions, their armors failing…And Mario sees his nephew and friends faced down by horrid monsters! He’d got to do something to help them!

-They’re angry enough that the animal faces come out, and all the things that Mario thought were tricks of the light were nothing of the sort…And Instincts Awakened! Champion of the soaring sky, ZYUOH EAGLE! Champion of the surging waves, ZYUOH SHARK! Champion of the savannah, ZYUOH LION! Champion of the forest, ZYUOH ELEPHANT! Champion of the snowy drifts, ZYUOH TIGER! Champion of the world, ZYUOH THE WORLD! Animal Sentai, ZYUOHGER!

-This planet, is under their protection! Eagle charge in, and Mario remembers that hero saving his life…And realizes, his nephew’s been fighting all this time…

-Instincts Awakened! Gorilla brings out the big guns, and The World flips to WOLF for cover fire to deal with Azald! While the others go Beast Unleashes on the MotW, cutting into him from all sides as they throw down a zyuman-only finisher! The masks, the facades, it all finally breaks as he falls…

-Which just leaves Azald. Well, until he calls for Naria to bring on a Continue. Which she pops into the slot before anyone can stop her, of course. Wellllll shit. And he starts painting mega mooks into existence! And lots of them, too! So this is bad.

-The World gets sent to back them up, while Gorilla flips to WHALE! He’s got Azald!

-Animal Kingdom Combination! WILD TOUSAI KING! Mecha fight. The mooks just keep on coming, which makes things even more complicated…

-As Whale manages to put a shot into Azalea’s chest that locks him up…But as soon as Cube Whale comes in and he sees Azald, he just starts firing full force into the bastard! Azald’s forced to pull a retreat, until Whale manages to get his partner to focus….

-Back at mecha scale, Complete Animal Combination! WILD TOUSAI DODEKA KING. Even bigger mech! Mecha fight. ZYUOH DODEKA DYNAMITE STREAM! Explosion!

-And Mario is very boggled. Most of all, why Yamato didn’t tell him about any of this…But he’s got to focus. Get that wood, come back, have a real talk with Yamato.

-In the aftermath, they didn’t manage to get their present to Mario in time, but they’ve still got plenty of hearty food and friends to share it with…Though Yamato keeps thinking of that moment in the park. Could that moment come to pass again…? …He can only hope.

-Credits!

Real talk I totally did not expect him to actually be surprised. But I do wonder if we’ll get to explore that character side of things next time, to say nothing of the mystery of Azald, next time in episode FORTY FOUR of Animal Sentai Zyuohger! Wait for it!

Animal Sentai Zyuohger vs Ninninger - Part 2

Okay, let’s finish this beast and get it behind me. It’s People In Animal Masks vs Some Ninjas Who Are Bad At Their Job, part 2! Here we GO!

-So right when we last left off, everyone’s dead! Oh no! Twice in a row we’ve started with everyone dead, that’s not a good pattern for the Super Sentai. And Yoshiharu is in despair.

-While Runrun is having a pretty great time now that his job is…done…?

-Those were ALL training dummies, as the shinobi reappear with the crew in tow! A mass illusion and hiding, to trick Runrun into revealing his true nature! But how? Well, it helps that Yakumo and Kasumi suspected something wasn’t entirely adding up with Runrun from the start, so they’d been watching him.

-And back when they were interrogating Misao, he managed to charades his way into showing them that the mask was a trick…So as soon as they got it off and he told them how it had been talking on top of him, they left an illusion behind and went to meet with the Zyuohgers…Who had totally already taken a hostage.

-But they were willing to talk, to form a plan…A plan to catch Runrun out! And now with his trickery revealed, they can stand together! Also Takaharu thinks his comrades are cool as hell, while Yamato is just frustrated that his crew didn’t tell him a single thing. So Runrun is mad.

-And off comes the Teletubby-ass facade, to reveal that Runrun really looks like…

-Well mostly like Swampfire from Ben 10 with some extra flare.

-Also his real name is Girumaada. So the shinobi swiftly pull a smoke-bomb escape, and the team is able to stand together on the roof!

-To nobody’s surprise, out come phantoms of foes the Sentai teams have faced before. Some Ninninger guys, and Bunglay and the first-episode shitty general for Zyuohger.

-But fine. Instincts Awakened! THE CHANGE! NIN NIN NIN! NIN NI NIN NIN! Shuriekn Change! RED! BLUE! YELLOW! WHITE! PINK! STAR! NINJAS! WOW! And also animal sounds.

-Champion of the soaring skies! ZYUOH EAGLE! Champion of the surging waves! ZYUOH SHARK! Champion of the savannah! ZYUOH LION! Champion of the forest! ZYUOH ELEPHANT! Champion of the snowy drifts! ZYUOH TIGER! Champion of the world! ZYUOH THE WORLD! Animal Sentai, ZYUOHGER!

-A splendid rampage! AKA NINJA! The roaring clouds! AO NINJA! The shimmering calm! KI NINJA! A petal blowing in the wind! SHIRO NINJA! The wavering mist! MOMO NINJA! The colorful star! STAR NINJA! We may be shinobi, but we do not hide! We may be shinobi, but we party all night! Shuriken Sentai, NINNINGER!

-Instead of hiding, we awaken our instincts!

-And so it’s a big movie fight, with the matching pairs fighting these villain costumes gotten back out of storage! Of course, they’re tough…But the first one falls to Ao’s magic and Elephant’s raw strength! As Lion and Ki double-team their foe, Lion’s ferocious fighting spirit pushing him on as Ki brings out tricks from shinobi of old!

-And the girls all team up to take on this phantom of Bunglay, who gets run the fuck over with mechanical transformations, and eats a whole set of finishers! Even as a phantom, he’s tough.

-The World and Star have their hands pretty full, but still find time to take a selfie. The World made a new friend! Good for him. Now duck! ALL BEASTS UNLEASHED! The World kicks through their foe’s armor, and then flips him into the air, where Star’s got some Lightning Rock Star waiting to zap him! Now that’s a party.

-Oh and Aka and Eagle got firebombed. So they’re not having a great time. But Yoshiharu leaps in with his ninpou, trying to rescue them…He’s not letting his father fall, not here! And that’s when they’re joined, by…A sealing shuriken? It slashes against their greatest foe a few times, giving Eagle room to pull out a Gorilla’s strength, before the little shuriken falls into Yoshiharu’s hands…

-Forming into a new Aka Ninja Shuriken! The strength of his legacy…! You changed the script, kiddo! The power of the Super Sentai, and of shinobi, holds strong! This is what you’ve earned, come to aid you!

-And that’s when Aka’s father arrives, because the sealing shuriken leapt out from inside the house and he chased it all the way here and yeah that’s Kibaoni, their greatest foe, being fought by a gorilla. And this is your grandson from the future. He’s taking this surprisingly well. But, one stand together?

-One stand together! Three generations! AKA NINJA SHURIKEN! THE CHANGE! NIN NIN NIN! NIN NI NI NIN! Shuriken Change! RED! NINJAS!

-The slashing whirlwind! A splendid rampage! Fair weather today! AKA NINJAS! Past, present and future, forged into a crimson force! This is their fight now, Zyuohger! Get Girumaada! And as Gorilla bails out, they unleash wind, fire and lightning upon this phantom, and a triplet slash that cuts deep into his armor…

-Now, the triple finish! RED! RED! RED! NINJA! And the fight is won.

-While Gorilla corners Girumaada! When Naria arrived with Azald and Kubar to help…And Bard finds them.

-But SEIZA CHANGE! He’s met…By another red. A very lucky man. The luckiest man in the galaxy, Lucky! Also known as, Super Star! SHISHIRED!

-SEIZA CHANGE! Four more join him!Another Sentai team, huh—

-SEIZA CHANGE! They’re not five strong…They’re nine strong! Azald is confused, and Naria brings on the mooks. As you can imagine, it’s a big display of the next Super Sentai team and their grand skills. As you can also imagine, seeing how little I know of them, describing it in any detail is a bit difficult, especially with a nine man team. And honestly, all you need to know is they kill mooks real good and beat up the named villains because they’re the New Hotness.

-Oh and their finisher involves a star formation! GALAXY! They all bring their power into the center, and then blast it forward, as Azald eats it full force! Because you can kill a man who can reform. They are, the ultimate saviors! UCHUU SENTAI! KYUURANGER! Naria is mad, but has to call for a retreat…And hey, kids, remember to watch them when their season starts!

-And Bard implies that this team was actively manifested by the changing of history, born out of a twisting of time.

-But back to the actual movie, as everyone brings up overlapping finishers to destroy the phantoms! I, am not, trying to unpack all those narrator cries. And Gorilla is fighting Girumaada all on his own…But he is never truly alone. For he has his friends and loved ones at his back, the hopes of a future burning in his soul!

-And also?

-He’s got a fucking Whale.

-With arm cannon and blade both blazing with power, Whale delivers shots and slashes to Girumaada, before slamming that cannon into his gut and racking up a ZYUOH FINAL shot, up close and personal!

-Holy crap this guy’s still standing.

-…Fine. The others arrive, and everyone back him up! Full flow! ZYUOH NINNIN FINAL BAKURETSUHOU! FIRE! Can I just say how much it frustrates me that TV-Nihon still doesn’t translate attack names?

-Anyways Girumaada gets blown up and gobbles up some Continues that Naria gave him just in case and now he’s big. Are you surprised? Don’t be surprised.

-So what do you do with a giant villain? What do you do with a giant villain? Make a big mech and punch him down, early in the morning! Complete Animal Combination! King Shuriken Combination! WILD TOUSAI DODEKA KING! KING SHURIKENJIN!

-The problem is he’s really big even compared to them. So this is not an ideal situation to be in. Bug they’ll just have to go all in! KING HATENKOU GIRI! ZYUOH DODEKA SHOT! The finishers go out…Aaaand accomplish nothing. Because of course.

-So how’re they going to get out of this one, as Girumaada’s vines ensnare them and start banging them together like a rowdy child’s action figures? Their mechs shatter, all twelve are sent to the ground, full of despair…Oh no! What can be done?!

-And that’s when Yoshiharu’s shrunken dives in, and with 40 years of legacy, the shuriken forms a shield…And for a split moment? A vision.

-The teams are met…By the 38 Reds who have stood at the precipice of disaster before them. You are not alone, heroes. You have never been alone. The Earth and all its smiles are not in your hands alone to protect…You ave guided by a legacy, by the past to protect the future! Take their strength, their honor, and fight for the justice they forged!

-The vision is done, as Girumaada’s attack is repelled…And now? To bring it all together! And forge Wild Tousai SHURIKEN KING! Twelve strong! It might be small, but with the power of ninpou fueling it, this mech can punch and take punches well above its weight class! But they can’t hold this for long…They’ve got to finish it fast! Drive the spear home, and…!

-As one, as a singular force! With the strength of all their predecessors at their back, and all of their descendants waiting for them still! They are joined by the strength of countless mechs, as it all comes out in a single glorious beam to cut Girumaada down! It is DONE!

-And then, as soon as it came, that power is gone…To await the next time they are needed, when one or even two teams aren’t enough…

-In the aftermath, Yoshiharu has to return to his own time, to see the man his father becomes with time to live…And after a big farewell, he’s gone in a flash of ninpou, to return to his own time.

-Which is when Tusk realizes…How could Yoshiharu exist if Takaharu’s supposed to have been dead by now?

-…So…Here’s the thing…

-You WHAT?! And not even his own family knew! His sister and his father didn’t get to be at the wedding?! Yamato, after being stepped on, quietly despairs at the absurd handful that is this pack of shinobi. His own crew is so much easier to deal with than this. Also it seems Misao and Kinji are gonna start hanging out more off-camera, which is really, really good. I’m super happy for him, legitimately.

-And Takaharu immediately latches onto the idea of hanging out and going camping again because that stops the argument and Yamato just has to run after this gaggle of heroes before they get into even more trouble.

-Credits!

Well, it had its problems, but that managed to be a good bit more fun than I was expecting. Really, the only problem with it is how shoe-horned in the legacy stuff was, especially for the higher budget and runtime that a movie should get. They kind of did the legacy stuff better in the 2000th episode special, and those were just, like, TV episodes.

Also I can already tell the Kyuurangers are gonna frustrate me real bad if/when I do that season. They were a little much in the two minutes we got with them here.

But hey, movie’s done, so we can get back to the story arc next time, in episode THIRTY NINE of Animal Sentai Zyuohger! Wait for it!

Animal Sentai Zyuohger - Episode 38

Today’s gonna be a busy day. Let’s see how it all turns out. It’s Animal Sentai Zyuohger, episode 38! Here we GO!

-PREVIOUSLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, Bard got a special outfit that changes a letter in his name.

-And PRESENTLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, he wields his new power with instinctive ease, spreading his own wings and even wielding his own version of the Eagle Riser! He blows up the hip hop MotW with ease…

-While the other gets a vibe, and realizes he needs to bail out, pulling an escape! Which leaves the others to recover…

-Back with Yamato…You’ve saved him three times, and…

-Bard. His name is Bard.

-Opening!

-Episode 38: The Wings Take Flight

-So the rest of the team is off looking for where Yamato’s fight went…When they run into Larri, who can tell them that Yamato is with the bird-man they’ve been looking for…And that he needs to talk to them.

-Up in the Big Bow, the villains are understandably confused about the situation, while Genis tries to keep a positive attitude…

-And in a little cabe hideout, Bard bandages Yamato’s wounds. And Yamato has a thousand questions…But the first thing is just thanks. You saved his life three times…He, he can’t even begin to repay that debt. But why, why go so far for him…?

-A child shouldn’t die, especially not alone and scared. …But what about after that? The battle you rescued him from, and now…Bard insists they were mere coincidence, but Yamato doesn’t believe it. You had a reason to do what you did, and Yamato needs to know.

-Over at the cabin, Larri explains his history with Bard…In his youth, the eagle was a Champion, much like you all. And his interest in the human world on the other side of the Link Cube, led to he and Larri becoming well acquainted…And then, just a few days ago, he finally met Bard face to face.

-Back with Bard, he explains, there came a day where he found a traveler who has stumbled through the Link Cube, injured…His orders in such an instance were to take such a man straight to the palace. But he was in such bad shape, Bard couldn’t just throw him to the wolves like that. No, he nursed the man to health, intending to get him back to the other side safely…

-But the man was found, and imprisoned, to protect the secret of Zyuland. An innocent man jailed, intended to be ripped from his entire life for the rest of his days, solely to protect someone else’s interests…That was when it all changed for Bard. When his love of his homeland soured.

-It wasn’t long before the human managed an escape…Found himself at a cliffside…And fell over the side. The entire thing was covered up, from his accidental entrance to his untimely end. And since then, Bard made the decision. The only way to keep people safe from Zyuland’s corruption was to cut the place off. And the only way to do that was to steal a Symbol and get Earthside, ensuring nobody who could put the pieces together could follow him…

-And then, to cover his tracks, he put the Symbol in the hands of another innocent. A life he was able to actually save. Yamato himself. Of course, what Bard did as a way to cut himself off from his actions, formed the basis for Yamato’s intense belief in connections…

-Back at the cabin, the others are realizing this is a more complicated issue. Zyuland needs to be fixed, before they can re-connect it to Earth…And then they all get a vibe. Dethgaliens are active again!

-Bard gets the same vibe, and feels it to the East…And Yamato makes a decision. Come with him. You need to see this.

-In the city, of course it’s the same rude crude dudes. Everyone who isn’t a bird gets there first, and Instincts Awakened!

-Champion of the surging waves, ZYUOH SHARK! Champion of the savannah, ZYUOH LION! Champion of the forest, ZYUOH ELEPHANT! Champion of the snowy drifts, ZYUOH TIGER! Champion of the world, ZYUOH THE WORLD!

-The fight is on, with The World wrangling up the mooks while the others go to try and separate and isolate the brothers…But these two are pretty tough, and more importantly fast, as they keep the worst from ever hitting them!

-Yamato arrives, and GORILLA! Instincts Awakened! Gorilla charges in, as Bard watches from afar…And sees the way they fight as one pack, their bond strong…The sheer will that Yamato has as a warrior, a man who keeps his planet safe by the fist and the sword…

-As they manage to kill one of the brothers with a combo finisher! And The World finishes wrecking the mooks, and the last brother, surrounded…Splits like a cell into two brothers! He’d been trying to keep it a secret, but now…Now they both kick out jetpacks, and take off with a bombing run before they bail! A bombing run that puts the others on the ground, their armors shattered…

-And Bard realizes he has to do something…As Yamato forces himself to his feet…And Bard steps up. You need both those men down at once, right? Two birds can hunt twice the prey. Instincts Awakened! Champion of the soaring sky…ZYUOH EAGLE! Champion of the heavens…ZYUOH BIRD!

-Beast UNLEASHED! Both men spread their wings and take off after the brothers, in a vicious dogfight that sales around and through the stadium! They manage to force the brothers to the ground, and then out come Risers for a melee battle, the two fighting as one…Their instincts united, as they each lash a brother, and then Riser SPINNING SLASH! Both brothers fall as one, and this fight is done.

-Well, mostly done. Naria, if you would? A Continue for the brother whose body most held up…

-Thank you, Bird. He’s got it from here. WHALE! The whole team comes together for Complete Animal Combination, and ALL TOGETHER! ONE TWO THREE FOUR! FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT! NINE, TEN! WILD TOUSAI DODEKA KING!

-The big brother forms into two big brothers. so this isn’t ideal. Out come their cutting rope, as it tears through buildings with ease…But they just slam the pair back, because these mecha fights are just contractually obligated by this point and immediately go to finisher. ZYUOH DODEKA DYNAMITE STREAM! They both blew up.

-And Bard watches the whole thing, wondering if there might be something to Yamato’s wisdom…

-In the aftermath, they find his cave emptied out. Bard’s pulled a runner…But it won’t be the last time they meet. That much is certain.

-Credits!

Well damn, that got dark in there. Not as dark and heavy as the Bunglay arc, sure, but Bard’s motivation is…Pretty damn understandable, and remarkably complex for this kind of show. I can’t wait to see where all of those pieces go next time, in episode THIRTY NINE of Animal Sentai Zyuohger! Wait for it!

Animal Sentai Zyuohger - Episode 35

Well I canceled plans today. I’m hoping that actually having some spine about shit works out in my favor, not against it. Anyways, it’s Animal Sentai Zyuohger, episode 35. Here we GO!

-PREVIOUSLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, Bunglay stole Yamato, which is bad.

-PRESENTLY ON Animal Sentai Zyuohger, at the cabin, everyone is freaking out…And then Mario wakes up and where’s a Yamato? …It’s…Complicated. They claim he’s injured and off getting treatment, and Mario just accepts that way too easily…

-While in the abandoned factory, Bunglay has his Gorilla puppet take Yamato’s Symbol so he can make a little ransom call…A call that hits all of them very, very heavily. The terms are simple: Bring him his fucking whale or your friend dies.

-Opening!

-Episode 35: The Zyuohgers’ Final Day

-Back at the cabin, Tusk is the first one to admit that Bunglay probably won’t honor that agreement. So their only choice is to keep Cube Whale here, and go fight to snatch Yamato back…Which is when the window shatters?!

-Cube Whale pulled a runner to go save his partner. God dammit you proud, stubborn fish.

-Back in the abandoned factory, Bunglay openly admits that yeah he intends to fry the whole team when they arrive. And you’re gonna get to watch, Yamato! They’re all going to die because of their connection to you!

-While with the others, they manage to snatch Cube Whale out of the air with a fishing net. But Misao understands this poor guy’s emotions all too well…And so they’re all left with a core, singular question. Is it right to demand Cube Whale stay out of this, if they’re throwing themselves into the fray? Yamato would say they should do right by Cube Whale…

-…But Yamato would also say that to save a wounded animal, you have to go against its wishes sometimes. Their best shot at this is going to be all together, not by following Yamato’s self-sacrificial tendencies. All in? All in.

-To the valley where the meeting will take place, where Bunglay and Gorilla wait with Yamato in their grip…And the crew march up, as Bunglay demands they drop their Symbols. And your flashlight thing too, world boy! Now, his whale?

-Cube Whale is right there, and furious, wanting to scale up…As they try to demand Yamato first, but Bunglay’s got all the cards here. So, hesitantly, reluctantly, Amu has to make the approach with Cube Whale in hand… And as soon as he snatches the little guy out of her hands, Bunglay slaps Amu so hard she rolls all the way down the hill to the others!

-And then, of course, he reveals that he’s not giving them Yamato. Because of course that was the plan. And he’s got Kubar in his ship above, who sends down a blast into the valley! Did you enjoy the view, Yamato? Did you enjoy seeing all your friends die?!

-When the smoke clears, there’s nothing, not even ashes left, and Yamato screams as the anguish hits him…

-Which is about when Cube Mole drills out of the hillside, and the crew leap out! Cube Whale takes that moment to get big and smack Bunglay back! Cube Whale! That ship’s overhead! TAKE IT OUT! Cube Whale doesn’t need to be told twice, as he races into the sky…

-And Yamato needs several long seconds to realize they’re even still alive…While the others, oh, they’re pissed. You’ve used Yamato’s good heart against him far too much, Bunglay. They knew something was coming, and they prepared for it with Cube Mole’s help…And now? Now they’re going to make you bleed for this.

-Though before that, Yamato just breaks down into relieved tears, clinging to his dear and precious friends…The thought of losing them all, it…He…He doesn’t know what he’d do.

-But now…They stand together. Yamato rises, and know this, Bunglay. His friends, the people he loves, are UNDER PROTECTION! Instincts Awakened!!! WHALE! Animal Sentai, ZYUOHGER!

-The fight is on, as Bunglay calls up some stolen mooks…But with the team freshly motivated and fired up, these small-fry fall in droves! And as Gorilla charges in…Whale promptly leaves him to the others, because Bunglay is his! It doesn’t take much for them to shatter the phantom, while Cube Whale bombards Bunglay’s ship, forcing Kubar to escape…

-As Whale fights Bunglay with all his will, the two in a standstill…Until the others join him! Because they don’t fight alone…They are a pack, and they stand together! It’s (All) Beast(s) Unleashed as all their strength comes forth, and Whale is able to deliver a blow that sends Bunglay flying across the valley!

-Where he lands amidst roughage, and runs into Kubar…Who decides he’s done here, and cuts the man’s memory-reading hand right off. He even drops a Continue on the ground, giving Bunglay one last chance if he wants…Then, he’s gone, leaving Bunglay with nothing but rage.

-Rage that consumes him, as he mounts one of his blades on the stump, and the Zyuohgers find him…And oh, he’s going to kill them, and then Kubar too! You’ll all PAY! He unleashes a vicious wave of force…

-That Whale meets with a shot, knocking it out cold! You’re not leaving this time, Bunglay…ZYUOH FINAL! He racks up charge after charge, and the entire rest of the team steps in to lend their power, charging it all through that cannon…Into one overwhelming shot, the power of two worlds coursing through the cosmos, through land sky and sea, and finally tearing through Bunglay in a single overwhelming blast of force!

-A blast that he barely survives, just enough to devour that Continue token…If he’s going down, he’s taking them with him!

And under a barrage of strikes from countless Cube Animals, Bunglay finally falls for the last time.

-In the aftermath, most of the crew is all fired up…But Yamato, Yamato can only think of how close he came to losing them all. And how grateful he is, that they’re still here. He, he thought he’d lost them, that it was all his fault…Bunglay had gotten into his head. But you all…You all saved him. In more ways than you can ever know.

Okay, that was pretty damn good. The mecha fight was a bit weak, but the character beats and even a lot of the fight choreography was really solid. That’s the kind of episode that makes Super Sentai worth watching. We’ll just have to see if they can keep up the rhythm next time, in episode THIRTY SIX of Animal Sentai Zyuohger! Wait for it!
