One of my favorite trope for Steddie is Steve hunting down Eddie when the kids join Hellfire and giving him a long list of dos and donts.
At first Eddie thinks he’s just being a prick, and worried he’s going to turn the nerds into freaks like him. Especially when he says not to mention drugs in front of Dustin.
But then he starts pulling out lists of monsters that can’t be in campaigns. And like what??? Why can’t he use demagorgons? They were gonna be in the next combat! He’s tempted to ignore the warnings, in fact he’s all set to, but something about Steve’s face when he was laying it all out haunts him. Something so deadly serious about it. So first he decides to test the waters to see if he’s full of shit.
When the session starts, he makes a throwaway comment, “you’re acting like there’s a mindflayer around the corner.”
All the kids freeze but Wheeler especially looks like he’s going to be sick. He even grabs at the bracelet around his wrist. The one he always said his best friend made him before he moved.
Eddie curses himself for even trying to test it out after that, and immediately bullshits the whole session so he can scrap any hint of demogorgans from the campaign.
After that session he drives straight to Harringtons house and demands they go over all the things he can’t include again, in detail, while he takes notes.
He doesn’t know what’s going on with these freshmen, but he knows trauma when he sees it and well he’d gotten attached to the gremlins.
When he leaves that night, he thinks Steve is looking at him with approval. Like he trusts him with their well-being now.

You of all people should realize that sometimes motivations for behavior can be more complex and mysterious than tracing them back to one single childhood experience.

Again the sickness speaking but here's something that has been going through my mind since forever:
I feel like a good way to mitigate a lot of discontent with the doa arc ending and in general the whole Dazai-being-flawless issue bsd has going on is by comparing bsd to Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. Please bear with me for two minutes.
When Sherlock Holmes was being published, people were intrigued and enamoured by Holmes' brilliant and charming, crimes-solving figure. People read the stories for the pure joy of being left gaping at his superhuman wits again and again; they didn't want to see him fail, they wanted to be shocked and amazed by his genius. When Holmes died and then came back, nobody lamented it being unrealistic, because realism was not what people were reading the books for! They were reading to be impressed, to cheer for the hero and then take satisfaction in seeing him turn out victorious. That's the author-reader deal that was made there: to impress and to enjoy being impressed.
As of recently I feel like we've been asking from bsd something it never promised us in the first place. Maybe it's just not that kind of series! Maybe it's more about surprising the reader with how the hero is going to make it and less about highlighting his flaws and insecurities. And like, that's okay! That's why Dazai getting away with it isn't it him getting away with it “again”, it's just how bsd is; in a way, it's what makes bsd bsd.
I think it really clicked with me like it never did before when I watched the last episode of season 5; because the arc ending felt so shocking and unpredictable, very deus-ex-machina trope, a little underwhelming in its lowering the stakes that were there the whole time, and yet so extremely on brand with bsd, I didn't even have it in me to be disappointed. It was so similar to the Guild's arc ending and even more to the Cannibalism arc ending, and maybe it really is just a pattern, maybe it really is what bsd aspires to be, and that's okay too.
Also, I can't stretch this enough: if it's not your cup of tea, that's fine. I can't say it's mine either. But I feel like criticizing bsd now for how it's always been falls quite short, because it really feels like demanding from it what it never promised to deliver in the first place. That's just as far as my current perception of the series goes, though, so feel free to disagree with me on this.

Wait. Hold on. I just finished my second watch of season two and I have a theory…
I think Aziraphale knew he fucked up before he ever got on that elevator.
HEAR ME OUT!
I think the moment that he heard that his big project would be the Second Coming, he instantly realized Crowley was right. As soon as the Metatron mentions the Second Coming, Aziraphale looks directly to Crowley with what I think is very-well-concealed panic. I don’t think that was a wistful gaze at what-might’ve-been. I think that was an instinctive entreaty for help from the person he trusts most in the world, followed by the immediate realization that he can’t ask for Crowley for help without letting the Metatron know something’s wrong.
Because Aziraphale KNOWS that the Second Coming is just a different flavor of Armageddon, it’s literally the rapture. There’s no planet where our boy has changed so much that he’d be willing to bring about the end of humanity, and the fact that he didn’t object to the idea instantly is important. To me, it means that Aziraphale must’ve made a split-second decision to play along. He didn’t have time to tell Crowley what was wrong, and even if he could’ve, he didn’t have enough information to put a stop to it.
Basically, I think that in the moments after the Metatron mentioned the Second Coming Aziraphale realized several things in quick succession
Crowley was right.
He and Crowley were going to have to save the world again.
If they were going to stop another apocalypse, they needed to know what they were up against.
The only way to know was to have a man on the inside.
There wasn’t time to tell Crowley any of it.
Now the question is, how does Aziraphale let Crowley know what’s going on?? Because he can’t stop Armageddon 2 (Electric Bugaloo) by himself.

i’m curious: what nonexistent/unfinished fic haunts you the most? which one are you kind of never not thinking about? could be your own abandoned WIP but also an idea a friend pitched to you and then never got around to writing, etc
#i’ll go first:#mine’s a fic i watched jes kind of brainstorm for fun on the dash maybe like. one and a half years ago at this point#and i still think about it all the time. that idea haunts me. i have a folder on my phone where i semi-regularly add quotes and poetry#that reminds me of that fic idea#iirc it was a verse where after someone dies#their spirit just kind of…lingers#for an indeterminate amount of time before crossing over or whatever#no one knows what makes them linger#but normally they eventually move on#and geno died YEARS ago but his ghost has just stuck around#and sid continued on like everything was normal#which is kind of frowned upon because you’re supposed to allow/encourage the spirit to cross over#but geno’s still here. he’s playing hockey and he and sid are living together and it’s like nothing has ever changed#sid never mourned him because he didn’t have to#but then one day geno’s spirit starts to flicker#and keeps phasing in and out#and sid has to confront his own grief and the fact that his time with geno is — most probably — coming to a close#and it’s made more complicated by the fact that they’ve essentially been living as a couple for years now but not talking about it#and it’s just this kind of heart-wrenching story about the denial and panic and fear and anger sid feels#trying to keep something alive that was never alive in the first place#and was never meant to last#anyway 🙃 it haunts me immeasurably#was just thinking about this because i added a few things to that folder on my phone#i think jes was calling that fic idea ‘revenant’

idk i think the beauty of saltburn is also in that its a mirror. so many people see what's looking back at them and we all have different demons and themes we pay attention to. oliver is a girlboss and a mastermind and the plotting was deliberate. oliver is lost and confused and every single plot was a failure. he regrets what he'd done and convinces himself of the opposite. he lies about regretting what he'd done to evoke sympathy. he hated farleigh and he kicked him out. he recognized farleigh for what he is to the cattons and humiliated him. he knows himself and others well. he has no idea what to do and how to be. lots of people get lost at saltburn

Dec 18. Prompt: Message. Word count: 365 @jegulus-microfic
Regulus’ beach house rental was a dream come true after the last few months he’s had. Between the added workload at his new job and the stress-fighting with his brother, he needed a few days of quiet by the beach. He’d always enjoyed walking on the beach and finding interesting seashells but today, he found a dirty green bottle. He disregarded it but, as he was walking away, the sun’s reflection revealed a paper roll inside. A message, just like in the movies when he was little.
He unfurled the roll and read:
Hello, my name is James. I am 10 years old. My family just moved here for the summer. We’re in the house with the red shutters at the end of the bay. Fishing with dad is fun and mom is teaching me how to cook the fish we catch, but I don’t have friends to play with here. So I’m sending a message in a bottle like in the movies, so if you find it, you can come find me and we can be friends.
From the looks of the paper, it had been in the water at least a couple decades, so Regulus thought nothing of it except that he understood the little boy’s loneliness. Yet he found his legs taking him towards the house at the end of the bay with the red shutters anyway. He knocks, and the most beautiful man he’s ever seen opens up, smiling brightly at him despite not knowing him. His voice is even dreamier, Regulus thinks, when the man says Hello and asks if he could help him.
“Um, yeah, hi. I’m sorry, this is weird, I don’t even know why I came here. I found a bottle with a letter inside it from a kid who used to live here and I guess I just got curious.”
“Wait, what’s the boy’s name?” and Regulus could see a little sparkle of hope in the man’s eyes. “James. He said he was looking for a friend.”
“So you want to be my friend?” and his smile has turned into a big grin. He holds his hand out to Regulus. “Hi, I’m James. And you are?”

like. okay. thinking about this some more and tbh it is kind of insane to me the way people will sometimes characterise core four, and kon specifically, as being completely unconditionally on board with tim not revealing his real name or face to them prior to wwyj.
like, i know the real reason is that the people doing this simply don't read comics. which is such a fucking wall to run into. but man... tim not telling them his identity when everyone else had revealed theirs to each other/didn't have one to begin with was the biggest driving force behind the tim and kon fight on apokalips. the same way kon was upset and hurt that superman never told him he's also clark kent. kon is very explicitly not cool with being left out of the loop about things as big as secret identities. it makes him feel like the other person doesn't consider him trustworthy, and then he starts questioning their relationship. (once again, pointing at the kon & lois conversation post hypertime arc when he finds out clark's secret identity.)
i love identity shenanigans. i love identity angst. i think thats one of the most fun things about the superhero genre! and aus where they don't know each other's ids can be fun!!! but it's like. INCREDIBLY out of character for that not to be a driving force of conflict if kon is involved in any way.
