Your character’s closet. Give 15 pieces of clothing with a little description of the “history” of the apparel.

As a whole, I would describe Laszlo’s closet as inconsistent. It kind of looks like a weird hodge podge of whatever the frick he’s collected over the years. This includes his own clothes AND clothing he has kidnapped for his own from the varying family members of the Robinson household lmao. His clothing choices are half to his own taste and half because he wants to trigger Tallulah’s fight or flight when she looks at him.

1. Bow ties: If he’s going to wear neckties, it’ll most likely be in bow tie form unless told otherwise. The yellow one is his absolute favorite in part because his movie counterpart is wearing a yellow bow tie lol but also because I’m going to say Tallulah made it for him. :’)

2. Collar chain: these are the sort of accessories that Laszlo would wear, and this one in particular is his favorite because it’s got bees on it!! And he loves bees!!! It was given to him by a bee keeper back in the day when he was doing a commission for them.

3. Socks: these are his absolute favorite pieces of clothing. you will never find him without socks on, unless he’s asleep. He has no favorite pairs because at this point he just has a giant basket of socks that he picks a pair out from and carries on his way.

4. Striped shirt: I also hc that Tallulah made this one for him! as like one of her first projects for school or something. and he does a great deal to make sure he doesn’t ruin it with his mess. The fact that he’s managed to keep it clean and in one piece after all these years speaks to his dedication to it and Tallulah’s ability to make him something sturdy lmao.

5. Funky holo looking shirt: I’m going to say this shirt resembles that Ugly shirt in Drake and Josh that brought the wearer good luck!! Which is why it’s one of his favorites because not only does he actually love the pattern, but when he wears it he’s guaranteed a sprinkling of good things. Not anything BIG like he can dodge a bullet in it or whatever but just little nice things!! Like he doesn’t burn his tongue on his tea or a butterfly will bless him by landing on his shoulder.

6. Since Laszlo is a notorious clothing burgler, I would also imagine he just has a bunch of everyone’s merch. So for Franny he would have whatever touring merch she put out! Or with her duo group. If Cornelius has any like company shirts then Laszlo was in the warehouse mooching whatever he could from the boxes. If Gaston had any merch from a set or project he was on, he’ll have told him to get Laszlo something other wise he’ll steal Gaston’s. He probably also has a Pizza Planet shirt he took from Art!!

5. Black turtle neck: he’s a hoe for a good turtle neck, and the black one to him is like a best friend in the wardrobe! This one is a lighter material, it’s not a full on sweater, so he can pop it on under anything! A shirt, a blazer, another sweater! Plus it’s black, so there’s less of a chance of him getting a stain on it, which is important to someone like him. It is comfy and probably his most worn item ever. But he does have like a whole array of colours in the closet.

6. Cardigan: Laszlo is also a hoe for a good cardigan. this one gets the favorite items tier because it was probably a gift from one of the family members, is really comfy!!, and has POCKETS for him to carry things in.

7. Bomber: he loves himself a good bomber jacket. This one in particular I would say is his favorite because it looks GREAT, that gradient?? Nice!! It was also what he was wearing during a showing that went really well, so whenever he sees it he just remembers that pleasant feeling of the night.

8. The windbreaker: these are his favorite type of over wear because they’re the easiest to clean lmao. Since the material will like make liquids roll off, he’s more inclined to wear them. Plus they can be worn at any time of the year! And come in bright colours! This one is his favorite because he was wearing it when during his second year in uni when he was finishing up a project that he spent soooooo long on, and got a Great Grade in the end, so he considers it to be full of good vibes.

9. Peacoat: I think this one is his favorite of his vast collection of coats because it’s endured the most lol. Like it was his first sturdy coat he bought instead of just wearing countless layers to stay warm, and it’s been with him for a long time. Old reliable. And it has INSIDE pockets, which he always finds some marker or pen inside when he pulls it out every year.

10. Jean jacket: just a nice jean jacket that can go with so much of his nonsense.

11.&12. Glasses/the Sunglasses collection: So his movie counterpart is always wearing goggles that look like they got lodged into his skull, so I was like, how can I incorporate that...He Has Astigmatism. So while most of the time he is just wearing contacts, when his eyes reject them he wears glasses! Lucky for me Samuel Barnett wears glasses so like, it all worked out. And he ALSO has too many pairs of sunglasses that he wears lmfao. Sometimes they’re to block out the sun but also sometimes they’re there to make him look bitchy.

13. Lime trousers: Laszlo loves a good pair of statement trousers! The problem with him is that he will also wear a busy top to go with them lmao. So he just looks loud everywhere. This pair was tailored for him and fit really well and make it so no car could ever hit him with how bright they are.

14. Pony trousers: I mean, they have little horsies on them. What a delight to be able to wear them.

15. Smock: His bestest friend in his whole closet that protects the majority of his clothing from his messy self when he’s doing Art. He’s had it for YEARS and should probably get a new one, but refuses because he likes this one since I am going to say that his parents gave it to him when he went off to art school. They’ve been together through thick and thin, he will wear it until it’s in tatters.

Create a beauty/make up/getting ready for the day routine for your character. Must include at least 7 steps!

The first thing that happens in the morning is Felicia whacking him in the face with her paw to feed her! She does have her own bed, she actually probably has about ten in total let’s be honest, but her favorite place to sleep is on the bed and he can’t kick her off so she takes up most of the bed since he just sleeps in the same position all night. Yet she somehow always manages to end up laying on him in some capacity. She wakes up first and starts on her little gremlin adventures in waking up the hand that feeds her. We start with prowling around on the bed. If that doesn’t work she meows. If that doesn’t work she will stand on him and meow. If that doesn’t work, even though it usually does, she will start pawing at his face until he wakes up. :) Then he pets her and gets out of bed.

Then he is going to go wash hands in the bathroom, probably using some disgustingly expensive soap. Next he’ll brush his teeth with some mint toothpaste, and then he will floss. All the while Felicia will be in the doorway, waiting on him to get on with it.

Much to her delight he’ll go to the kitchen to feed her and put on the kettle. While that’s going on and Felicia is eating, he’ll go fetch the newspapers (as he is subscribed to many, not just Swynlakes).

He’ll come back to the kitchen to wait on the water to boil, make breakfast, and then sit down at the table to read the paper with the food and tea. (If he’s feeling it, then this will also be the time that he will pack his lunch.)

Once that’s all done, he will clean everything up and then go take a shower where, again, he probably uses absurdly expensive stuff for no other reason than that he can. And that it smells good.

After showering he’ll shave the beard, which usually just means touching it up and making sure there is no neck beard lmfao. It’s not like lumberjack long but it isn’t just a shadow. He is a very vain person now that he knows looks are, in fact, everything. So then he’ll move on to his hair that will get blow dried and styled with some more expensive product until he’s happy with it.

Then he will go get dressed. Pick out the suit for the day, add a pocket square, tie his tie, put on his watch, and then whatever shoes work with everything.

It’s about this time that the influx of messages to his other phones will start popping off so if there’s some business he needs to take care of, he’ll do that while he gathers his stuff for school into his briefcase. Nothing like some early morning crime to get the day going. And when it’s time to leave for work, which probably varies day to day for classes or meetings or research or whatever, he’ll head out the door for the university!

Spice Up Your Life - Spice Girls

I mean the Spice Girls were and still are iconic spelled to sound like eye-con-eek. They were a good chunk of his childhood to adolescence since they WERE the 90′s. So not only is their music just, you know, great, it holds a very nostalgic place in his heart. I mean he for sure watched Spice World and didn’t give a single shit that it makes no sense. It didn’t need to, it was the Spice Girls hanging with aliens and chilling out on the bus in their iconic fashion. Anyone in that movie he will reference as their character from that instead of like oh Hugh Laurie from House MD? NO, it’s Hugh Laurie, Poritot from Spice World. Oh Stephen Fry? From Gosford Par? NO, it’s Stephen Fry, the Judge from Spice World.

Anyways, while he would and does put their entire discography on, I’m putting this one in particular because it’s such a bop!! And their anthem. When the bitches were back for the 2012 Olympics, while they may have opened with Wannabe with choreography, (except Victoria who literally stood there Posing, the icon) they really went in with Spice Up Your Life okay, they rode around that stadium ON the cabs while singing it!!! It’s 100% the song that will pick him up off the floor.

LA DI DA - EVERGLOW

What a song??? Holy SHIT. It may be only like a month old in its life span but it Hits, so it gets a spot on this playlist because as soon as I heard it I was like, “Laszlo would be obsessed.” It’s a bop, it’s a jam, it’s everything he could ever ask for in a song. First off, the production on it is just so good!!! The beats HIT and the clapping behind their vocals picks it up to another level. And that part where they like lmfao aggressively grunt?? after “Everglow forever let’s go.” amazing, brilliant, stunning, absolutely the best thing he has ever heard before. And then the VOCALS!!! The talent!!!! Like the range between all the girls is astounding, and I don’t just mean their vocal range. I mean ALL of it, the singing, the rapping, the power and then pulling it back for the softness until they come back to make heads bop for the chorus. Whew!!! Just such a good, pump up song that he can bop around too and that’s his favorite kind of music!!

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) - ABBA but the Cher Cover

No disrespect to ABBA because Laszlo loves them, but he looooves Cher and while he would ALSO play her entire discography, this song just hits different sung by Cher in 2018 in her beautiful, earthy voice. And she did it so tastefully. She respected the original song by not turning it over into something completely lost to the track but it still felt like she was putting her own magical Cher-y blessing upon it as if it were her very own song. It’s like the perfect crossover??? He probably had an out of body experience listening to her cover album of ABBA and then going to see her in Mama Mia! 2. Plus, like, this song is also his life lmfaooooo where is his man,,, @ god (who is Cher, as confirmed on Will and Grace.)

I Know A Place - MUNA

Not only is this song just...so good...but the lyrics of it really hit home for him. Like??? “Don’t you be afraid of love and affection/ just lay down your weapon”??? ow bitch. But it is a celebratory song!!! It’s about being able to be whoever you are and not having to worry about getting hurt or dealing with the bleeeh people of the world because they’re going to a place that’s safe and accepting, and that’s in LGBT+ spaces. And there are a lot of people who don’t feel safe and who are having to hide themselves, but this song is providing them a little slice of heaven to be themselves. It also serves as a reminder that there are places were you can be safe and happy and yourself and you will be accepted!!! And that’s just such a lovely message, and for music like this to be out there in the world for the youth makes him so happy! And the music itself is so funky and absolutely something that one can dance to. It has those places that slow down...and then HIT for the bopping around for the hype of the chorus!! UGH! and Katie’s voice still being sort of haunting really just brings it on home. This song is so good!! Stream MUNA!!!!!

Paparazzi - Lady Gaga (TW: fake blood from 3:20-end of the video)

I’m linking the 2009 MTV performance because I’m going to say that this was his first exposure to Lady Gaga and holy shit was it life changing!!! This was everything. Like the performance art of it really came for his throat. Spoiler alert: when the blood started pouring from her chest and the crowd like gasped and groaned??? It was a Cultural Reset!! She was singing her heart out and going all out on that choreography. Her foot up on the piano as she slammed the keys??? The set design?? SO GOOD! And her dancers? Shout out to them, because damn they really did that. So, not only is the song amazing, he will always associate it with hearing it to this performance and it is still such a good song!!! The lyrics are insane. She did this when she was 23, only a year older than him, and boy did it light a fire under his ass.

And it also serves to keep him humble lmfao. Even though he isn’t Famous famous like his other family members he does have his own little corner of fame and can’t be out here falling in love with the attention.

Coisa Boa - Gloria Groove

Honestly, anything Gloria Groove puts out is pure gold to his ears. They don’t have to go as hard as they do, but they do it anyways! The really pronounced instrument that’s going on? Their singing??? Going from rapping to hitting that note at the end of “Quer papo de ousadia?” absolutely sends Laszlo off the rails. Like, there’s no other way to describe their style than Iconic. It’s fun and fighty and gah! So good!! Also it just being about getting the Squad and going ham is just, chef kisses. Again, his favorite songs are things that get him moving and grooving, and this ones ticks all the marks and so much more. One day they will release an album and on that day someone should check to make sure Laszlo is still alive.

Toxic - Brittany Spears

I mean what is there to say. The song is iconic, it came out when he was like 17. It was everything and still holds up today. The production on it still just boggles the mind. That like eeeeee sound??? The spy music break in the middle of it?? And the video!!! Art. The fact that she did the back handspring during the laser bit really just made him go insane. Cultural reset from the pop queen of the time. Turned him into a bigger Britney fan. Everything about it is so good. Another nostalgic one, but !! it still holds up baby!! If this is played he is legally required to perform.

El Mambo - Mon Laferte

Her voice is just?? out of this world. Laszlo is a huuuge fan of everything she puts out but this one really just took him out. Like she can hit some powerful vocals and that’s what the beginning seems like they’re counting up to, but when she came out of the gate just rapping about this guy who needs to get over himself, woooowie. And then she comes back for that mambo sound in the chorus and her beautiful voice going In, ugh. UGH. It’s so good!!! She is amazing and the instruments on this one really highlight that as well as making it groovy enough to dance around to as we say goodbye to toxic men and their overwhelming jealousy!!

Too Little Too Late - JoJo

I’m linking to the 2018 version because JoJo re-releasing all her music so that she can get the cash money from HER music is...stunning, amazing, love her and love that for her. This song was yet another cultural reset. And you know what, she just got better. Her vocals kick ass and the lyrics are still just as good as they were when they first came out. That high register run she does toward the end??? Okay?? go off!!! Another song about a wonderful lady kicking a man out of her life and becoming better for it. also she JUST came out with a Christmas album so go stream it.

Endless - Frank Ocean

Now this is the whole album because, honestly, that’s how it’s supposed to be listened to. There’s also the visual element that you’re supposed to watch while listening, but since that’s like no where to be found since Mr. Ocean’s people snatched it all up from the internet unless you want to buy it off Apple, this is all we get to work with. Which is fine, honestly. ANYWAYS, this whole album is just so beautiful. And no one really knows the full story behind where it came from or why Mr. Ocean made it, and that’s a whole over layer as to why Laszlo adores it!! Not only is the music stunning but the mystery surrounding it gives him life. Frank Ocean is another artist that he could press random on the entire discography and be happy with whatever decided to play, but THIS album is his favorite from the man. It may seem like the outtakes from Blonde but to Laszlo, they all feel intentional. It’s like peaking into a sketchbook versus the novel of Blonde, and that appeals to him!! There is a certain effort that needs to be put in to listen to it by finding it. So it’s that little bit of extra artistry that makes this album hit different than the others, plus the songs, though some very VERY short, are all GREAT. Every song has this sort of improv feeling almost? but feel effortless like all his other music. Some of them are really short, just snip bits of a song, but they don’t feel that way with how they flow together and cut one another off and it’s just a weird entity of music that feels fleeting and yet...endless.

Write ten short-short stories of no more than a paragraph long

There was a monster that lived in a closet. There was only darkness inside. It was small and it was quiet. The closet was, too.

Language was such a merciful thing. It stretched out in a vast shape and yet only went so far. It could make a pointed shot or hit every mark around the one it was meant for. And when people wrote it down for others to see, to understand, it gave hours of life back to those that had been stripped of it.

A man died. A monster had killed him. As a result a little girl cried and her parents let the monster out of its cage. .

An extended leash was a dangerous thing. They had given it to a creature they had wronged. When they looked away it used it like all the other weapons it had been trained with. They bled out slowly.

A pack of pretty lies sat comfortably on the table. All the eyes in the courtroom had been enchanted when the hand that held the deck flourished one after the other. Unfortunately for the dealer, beauty only existed from the ugly things it was compared to. The monster on the other side could not be transformed. The eyes looked away, but the ears still had to listen to its hideous truths.

The monster stepped out from the shadow to be under the blue sky. It did not startle easily, but at the sound of its newly chosen name, it wept.

Among the people of a small town, it thought it would be able to learn how to be human again. It had always been quick in understanding information. After a while it understood that it was too late. It had never been human to begin with.

Freedom lasted for only so long. It had been a short strand of idiotic hope. Nightmares end, but so do dreams. This was no exception.

There was a costume made to turn the monster into man. It had designed it with the thought that it might give its mutilated form the illusion of dignity. Everything had been tailored to perfection— except the face. That gave it the most trouble. There were books on etiquette and the human psyche, but they all agreed that practice was the only answer. People had a sense of recognizing themselves in others. The creature did not want them to see the lack of reflection when looking at it. A mask would need to be created.

Players moved chess pieces. It took him no less than a year to move his into place. A checkmate was called and the king resigned before the final blow could land. A new king took his place, and the game began again.

On Magic, Power, Justice, and Human Nature: Greek History by Steven Ngai and Elizabeth Brinks

Course Description: Covers the social, cultural, and political history of Magicks during the Greco-Roman Era. Will survey magic’s influences on the period of time when it was widely accepted and how it affected the civilizations expansion through both conquest and colonization. Tracking the rise and fall of these empires as well as the loss of integration of Magicks within society and the reasons behind magic’s expulsion.

Assignments:

1. Primary Source Analysis: Given a list of primary sources, the student will pick a total of 5 sources that they will identify and answer the following questions for:

Identify the creator/author of the primary source.

Identify the intended audience.

Describe the historical context. What happened during this event or time period?

Personal description of the source: Give a brief summary of what you see when you look at the source. Consider the images, people, objects, activities, actions, words, phrases, facts, and numbers.

Petition Town Board for something! A new business? A new law? Anything!

Petition: To Rename “Yellow Brick Road”

PETITIONER: Pedram Ratigan

To the members of the Swynlake Board and to anyone else to which this may concern,

This petition is in regards to the street that has been named, “Yellow Brick Road,” running parallel to Main Street on the southwest side of town and leads from Everafter Boulevard out to the farmlands. I am suggesting that this street be named something more apt.

From my understanding the name is derived from the saying that was originally used in the fictional work of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, an American author that was then turned into a movie by MGM in 1939 under the title The Wizard of Oz. The phrase then became popular and has been used in various forms of popular culture, such as the musical the town performed this past summer (2020) of Wicked.

To my understanding, Swynlake has always been a welcoming place for Magicks. It is well known as being the only place within Great Britain that is openly friendly to the kind. This town takes great pride in this fact and the people within its community often cite it for why they have decided to live here at all. So why have we allowed this town to name a street from a phrase that comes from a piece of media that is not friendly to Magicks?

Within the book and the more well known and popular movie version of this story, the depiction of witches is abysmal, as they often are in media. They play to the stereotypes that have accumulated around sorceresses and allowing the term witch that has been turned into some sort of insult when discrediting and persecuting these women. Depictions such as the Wicked Witch of the West are harmful as they reinforce stereotypes that reinforce Mundus-Magick inequality and marginalize sorceresses. Not only that, but the young sorceress who have had to listen to the Mundus tourists walk down that road singing the song from The Wizard of Oz are reminded that even within a town they thought they were safe in, the town itself is still capitalizing on these hurtful depictions of them within popular media and have done nothing to amend this. Stereotypes do not evolve out of thin air, they have a history. Sorceress who no longer served purpose to men having become widows when their husbands died as they could no longer perform their duties as a wife, and having grown old in age which would not allow them to produce any offspring, were considered evil. Without a man’s word to protect them from these allegations they were prosecuted and punished for these signs of wickedness. The depiction of witches seen in literature, art, and media were once point interpretations of how witches looked. They gave physical attributions that correspond with age, socioeconomic status, or deviance were used as tools to incriminate these women who fit into those categories.

Also within this story a Mundus man is depicted as pretending to be a powerful sorcerer known at The Wizard. This is another harmful character to for Magicks as this character is shown to lie and con his way to a place of power. When he is found out to be a Mundus with no powers he is not punished, he is only given a stern talking to by the main protagonists before proceeds to give the characters the things they asked of him by presenting them with ordinary gifts with the message that what they wanted, they had the whole time. This is a harmful message to send to Mundus who could potentially be using false claims to earn them a place of power. It also must be disheartening to Magicks to see a character that they supposedly had something in common with in a place of power, only to find out that it was a Mundus the whole time in a time period when they do not get to see themselves in such places due to legislation.

One could argue that the town is using the phrase to take back The Wizard of Oz and claim it for Magicks. The summer musical took the more Magick friendly version of the story that was told from Elphaba’s point of view, adapted from the books. Already this is a step in the right direction as they have bothered to giver her a name instead of referencing her by her horrid given title. The books use the same inversion but both offer different experiences as their forms of storytelling is not the same just as the time in which they were written was not the same. Neither of which are perfect forms of media that depict Magicks either, but one could argue it has better purpose than its counterpart. But I find that the reference to the yellow brick road would bring up the latter rather than the former for most people, including Mundus who are probably more aware of the story in The Wizard of Oz than they are the story of Wicked.

A name of a street may not seem like a big deal. Perhaps it isn’t. But if Swynlake is going to continue to promote itself as a beacon of light for Magicks and Mundus to live together in harmony then we should rename the street to something else. Using a phrase for one of our main roads that is derived from a piece of media that has popularized the stereotype of the wicked witch and a Mundus calling themselves a Magick to claim power for himself when it could be used to commemorate something else is a missed opportunity.

I would suggest that the Board put out a call to the community for new names for Yellow Brick Road. The Board can then chose its top picks and allow the community to vote on these until a winner is found.

(this came from me reading Jean’s hc post about people singing on the street so this petition could be alternatively titled “Ratigan has had enough of listening to bitches sing this movie/musical’s songs due to that street and wants to put an end to it.”)
