do i care ?? not fucking really .

im gonna preface this by saying this is really not the huge deal that i think people are making it out to be across here and esp on twt. treating this as some kind of event deserving of a deplatform i got it cancellation or worthy of vast amount of neg to people who are still choosing to support sapnap on kick or to sapnap himself is just fucking childish . rey was talking earlier about dt fanvases being prone to give mentality and it’s so fucking true people see one person spreading hate and take it as permission to do the same instead of employing critical thinking and going hey . is it really that serious . does the subject of discussion really deserve it or was i just waiting in my chance to hate him . because the energy it’s giving is very much ‘i never liked him and just pretended to tolerate him but now he fucked up i can drag him’ which is actively something we discourage in dtblr when it comes to dream so to do so to sapnap is kinda hypocritical . even if u don’t like him just . don’t be hateful ??? esp when it’s over a streaming contract don’t treat it like he’s actively spreading bigotry when we know he’s not.

ok ? . let’s get into kick then . why would sapnap be attracted to this platform?? let’s look at what he says in his statement . and this is in no way shape or form going to be the most nuanced or in depth take on what’s going on it’s just a short discussion on the situation

number one he wants something to force him to be more active online bc it seems like his career as a creator has taken a backseat to other ventures he’s been taking recently . the dteam have been travelling near constantly lately between events in spain, france visiting the u.k. going to cons across america meeting up with people sapnap working with nrg he’s been busy . this isn’t sus .

twitch is notoriously fuckinf over creators . it’s still an incredibly hostile place for a lot of people . and sapanps right the megacorp that owns it is dominating the market for streaming with no real competition (other than youtube streaming) meaning that strwaming creators are effectively forced into handing over 50% of their stream profits to a man who is already the worlds richest man fucking iver his employees - who everyone is always saying to stop feeding money into . the 95/5 split for profits on kick is a lot more attractive to streamers for this reason . they’re keeping the money the earned during the streams and not supporting a man who takes in money and refuses to pay his workers - which people are often criticised for as well .

this is something we as the community can’t really comment on - we have no idea what happened in that conversation . we don’t know what plans kick has we don’t know what direction the platform is going to head in . but we do know that it was positive enough for sapnap to change his mind and feel more secure in his placement in the kick contract . that he felt heard in his concerns and feels like those concerns will be heard and he can help i still chnage in the platform to make it a more usable and friendly platform.

this is the last sector i’m taking from sapnap’s post . this is understandable . the dream team are credited with changing the atmosphere and streaming experience on twitch in extremely positive ways . it’s understandable that sapnap believes the same might be possible for another platform with its reputation in the DIRT . and he acknowledges how bad the representation of creators is currently and as a large creator it might well be possible that he can influence change across the platform .

secondly from this . he’s right . if his plan to intervene in the atmosphere on kick goes well it may will incite change on twitch - where he is still streaming - as they may fear that creators will be more incentivised to take contracts with kick instead of twitch. we’ve already talked about how twitch has huge problems in its creator usability and a genuinely successful rival with creator forward procedure and policy may help to create a better environment for creators on twitch - things like misogyny and racism in chats that has gone uncared about may face crackdowns as well as a better deal on monetary splits between the company and individual streamers .

so why is everyone mad . well .

it’s still a shithole of a company . it’s currently platforming horrid people who have been banned from other streaming services for racism. sexism etc because of its leniency with rules - the creator stating that it’s only rules are ‘no pornography, no hate speech’.

in so . its a breeding ground for right wing extremists who have nowhere else to go and giving them major profits from the streams they make . it’s allowing a lot of extremists to make professions built on their bigotry . it’s praying on people’s weak spots by promoting itself as the only streaming service that allows people to gamble on stream . the owner is the co owner of a large cryptocurrency company . it’s entirely unappealing to communities upon communities of people and it’s understandable that people are upset with sapnap attempting to coax his viewers into such a toxic environment .

but it’s also understandable that sapnap feels he will be able to make some impact on the way the company is run . he is openly one of the only people to take a contract there while actively challenging the companies procedure which is a huge start . he’s voiced concerns about the reputation of the platform and how the streamers they host create such a foul represent tati on of the platform that will deter most people from the site . will he be able to change everything ?? fuck no but is his motivation understandable ?? yeah o think so .

so what did we learn here . it’s. a very complicated situation . there’s no right or wrong way to feel . unless you’re just going about spreading hate and acting like sapnap’s committed mass murder or whatever then you should probably take a step back and ask yourself why you’re angry to this extent .

people are always going to make decisions you don’t agree with. and saying ‘well yeah but i don’t like their reasoning’ is fine, you’re allowed to say you don’t think something is worthwhile but you have to remove yourself from your perspective and say okay. i understand why HE thinks it’s worthwhile even when i disagree . simply using the platform doesn’t make sapanp a bigot and he’s expressed his own ill feelings towards the platform because of its user base and stated no desire to be associated with those people and expressed his intention to work with the platform to make it a more friendly experience for everyone .

you can have no faith in that kind of change or support him 100% neither person would be in the wrong for how they feel about the situation . it’s an incredibly complex topic . there is bound to be disagreement . but i will say i don’t think his explanation is worth the mass hate and cancellation attempts it garnered . if you don’t like sapnap that’s fine, but don’t seek opportunity to spread hate just . go look at something you do like . follow him on kick or avoid the platform altogether . do what you want . who care .

OUAGH THANNK UUUU.... ok SO. the Potentates are the ruling class of Bronze Eden, a theocracy where they have near total power. They used to be very active in the lives of the citizens of Bronze Eden but after Potentate Magnus' third wife Gloriana almost succeeded in a coup to overthrow the throne, they have become much more secluded, with Magnus haven't been seen directly for many years. This got worse after his eldest son Augustus was assassinated. Even his own children see him rarely, and his grandchildren almost never. I'll do the person asks, and descriptions for each of his kids and what sector they've inherited is under the cut!

👁️ EYE - what colour are their eyes? do people notice their eyes? is there anything special about them (shows emotion easily, literally magical...)?

Magnus - light pale blue, often unfocused but once very intense. Very lidded and heavy, he's 105 years old. A bit too small for his face.

Augustus - light reddish brown. Not as intense as Magnus, but certainly not soothing either. Erratic, anxious.

Boris - dark brown, slightly downturned, warmer but always kind of sad like a cow about to be slaughtered

Salvatore - lighter brown, also a bit small for his face, noticably large pupils, missing eyelashes.

Felipe - light pale blue, large, wide, with a few flecks of brown. Intense, often darting all over the place, not knowing but confident.

Clymene - slate grey, downturned, calculating, sort of humourous, like she's laughing at you.

Zephyr - slate grey, downturned, hazy, uncomprehending, almost innocent. Still childlike despite being middleaged.

🤥 LYING - are they good liars? do they have tells to show they're lying?

Magnus - very good liar, because I think he himself believes everything he says. His main tell is that everyone close to him knows he got to where he is by lying and manipulating, but you wouldn't know that without direct contact with the man.

Augustus - Bad, relies on the idea that a man of faith wouldn't lie, otherwise gets very figity with his hands and licks his lips too much.

Boris - Pretty good, just because he always looked so sad and wet that nobody really had it in him to doubt his word, which to be fair was true most of the time. probably why he did what he did.

Salvatore - Good in the sense that you always think he's lying so you never know when he's ACTUALLY lying, because he's so exaggerated and over the top already that he kind of constantly sounds like a used car salesman.

Felipe - Bad, blinks too much, always avoids saying things directly so he has plausible deniability when he eventually gets caught out because he's so accustomed to being caught in a lie.

Clymene - Alright at lying, but isnt good at practicing lies and excuses because she makes too much eye contact always.

Zephyr - good. everyone believes the baby.

👻 GHOST - do they believe in ghosts? what are their "ghostly experiences", if any?

N/A they're all haunted by the spectre of holiness and of Boris' suicide and the deaths of Magnus' many wives.

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

Magnus - problems with every big emotion and he will make it your problem.

Augustus - couldn't handle feeling powerless ever, which being a religious figurehead helped with. Needed to feel like people were hanging onto his every word to have self worth etc. He also needed to be watched and seen and paid attention to at all times.

Boris - uhm. he couldn't deal with them unfortunately.

Salvatore - blows up very easily if he feels his opinions or his ideas are being challenged in any way, sort of like a fascist Walt Disney

Felipe - similarly to Augustus powerlessness is something he doesn't know how to deal with. Gets violent if he thinks someone thinks he's stupid, which he is.

Clymene - probably has the best handle of her emotions of any of them because she's always been taught from a young age as a woman if she gets too emotional she's hysterical so she has a very stiff upper lip. Plus the whole thing with her mother. Gets angry though when people act like she's stupid and doesn't understand the division she's in charge of.

Zephyr - Never quite figured out to deal with the grief of his mother being executed and is very sensitive over that. Disappears around the week of her death without fail.

😭 CRYING - what makes them cry? do they cry easily?

None of them cry easily but Salvatore.

Magnus - yes and his family live in fear of his

Augustus - pauses many conversations to write down a speech, basically treats every conversation in fact as an opportunity to try out a new line or snappy dialogue

Boris - first thing he did after waking up and last thing he did before going to sleep was look at the stock market and latest bank figures.

Salvatore - Covered in pieces of paper and ink and leaves smudges everywhere because he's constantly thinking about and updating his most recent project

Felipe - very paranoid about assassination attempts so has a very methodical routine every morning and evening

Clymene - extremely anal about her schedules and her appearances at events

Zephyr - sometimes just disappears for a bit without saying anything

👪 FAMILY - what is their family like? what is your ocs relationship to them? does your oc have any siblings?

💤 SLEEPING - do they fall asleep easily? what helps them sleep?

I don't think any of them ever sleep easily except for Felipe, who is always very assured of himself. The rest always have memories and things that haunt them to some extent even if they pretend otherwise; Magnus is always thinking about his glory days. Augustus thought always about his next big speech his next move his next fight for political and religious power. Boris was chronically depressed and never slept well. Salvatore was only 4 years younger than Boris and remembers him a lot I think, when he's alone with his own thoughts. Felipe as I said sleeps well because he regrets nothing. Clymene is always thinking about her next scientific project and sometimes is working on it into the night. Zephyr only sleeps with the aid of whiskey.

Potentate Augustus was in charge of overseeing the church, as the oldest child. One of the main things he did was create small splinter groups in different areas of Bronze Eden to better represent the different ways people in the fields and at the coast worship compared to those in the city. The biggest of these is the Brothers of the Magpie, the only one to survive after his assassination as many of these groups were cut down. There are rumours his assassination was an inside job by the Potentates as these splinter groups arguably endangered the Empyrean Temple's power.

Potentate Boris was set to take over the business sector, and killed himself at a very young age, only 22. He's become canonised as a saint, as he was known as a very kind, very comforting individual before his death. He had dark hair but it's depicted as blonde in portraits of him to further give him the angelic cherub vibe.

Potentate Salvatore is in charge of arts and education. He's kind of seen as more harmless/fun-loving, and has built up an exaggerated, campy persona, in spite of all the agiprop he has invested and prioritised, and the heavily segregated rich / poor education system that's grown under his eye. He funded various theatres over Bronze Eden, including the People's Theatre and was deeply saddened when it closed, not because of all the people that died but because he had a personal hand in the way it was built and designed and wants more people to recognise his genius in architecture.

Potentate Felipe is in charge of military and internal security, and is currently staging a mini war against anything to do with Nod or Nod culture or what he percieves as Nod culture. There's a slight sexaul fixitation? to his fascination with Nod and his hatred of it, something he's definitely tried to pass down to his children and neices and nephews. There's something comedic about his outbursts and hatred, until you remember he is actively getting people killed over it. I imagine him if Boris Johnson was like the head of the CIA.

Potentate Clymene is in charge of sciences, but was initially set to take over the healthcare. She switched with her younger brother, Zephyr. She and Zephyr are the only children of Gloriana, the failed coup queenie. They're so close and look so similar they're often mistaken for twins. Clymene is the most nonreligious, least interested in the power struggle of the family's internal politics, but obviously presents as religious to save face. Probably the most actually involved in her sector than anyone else, attending various events and keeping updated with all the latest advancements and fledging bright minds in Bronze Eden.

Potentate Zephyr is the youngest, in charge of healthcare. Neither ambitious, power hungry or particularly intelligent he has been forgotten largely by his family and is mostly considered a forgotten grandchild by Magnus as opposed to his youngest son. He was set to take sciences but freely admits that Clymene is more intelligent than him and cites that as why he traded so easily. Very close with his big sister.

And that's the main family! there's more grandkids and stuff but these are the main people the citizens of Bronze Eden know and who's names they remember! thank you so much for sending this i love talking about my guys very much hope this wasnt too much text!!!

oh you think i'm over this? no i refuse. in fact i am STILL losing it over the fact that hanya and i managed to call a metropolis reference a YEAR in advance. i have a contentious relationship with the ateez stylists bc they have produced some very......questionable work (ketchup packet seonghwa), but then sometimes their affinity for ugly hits just the right spot like it did with guerrilla. not only is the styling an excellent blend of the best of ugly skater punk and revolutionary counter culture, but the mv is full of art references that perfectly balance the idea of starting a revolution in a dystopia where art and emotions have been made illegal.

gasoline - key

i have some...complicated feelings about gasoline that i'll get into in an extended post eventually, but i went back and watched the mv again for the first time in a few months and despite my complicated feelings, kibum gets it. the visual cohesion of this album is so interesting and unusual and there's so many ideas that i do love that it would be a betrayal to not have it in my top three. from the album design to costuming to all the promo material that comes out, kibum has such a strong eye and excellent ability to work with his team and i respect it so much.

panorama - lee chanhyuk

one half of akmu, chanhyuk had his solo debut and he went whole hog on doing something very holistically conceptual, down to the types of performances that he did. the album tells the story of a coma patient, and i highly recommend it as a listening experience, but the performances of panorama are exactly what i mean when i want idols to be fucking around with form. there are not that many so i'm actually going to give a brief description of each of them, because if there are any links you click on from this post, it should be these ones:

mcountdown 221020: he does the entire performance standing still with his back to the camera, including the ending fairy

music core 221022: does the entire performance with his back to the audience, staring into a mirror that is being held up by his manager

k-909 - eyewitness account: this is of one of the bsides, does the entire performance holding a glass of wine that he then dumps down his front halfway through the song

k-909 - panorama: honestly the most 'normal' of the bunch, but you can see the consistency in how he's performing and what type of aesthetic markers are acting as a throughline

inkigayo 221023: has a barber shave his whole head on stage in one take while he's singing

girls - aespa

i love aespa's techno nonsense. girls has all the flavour of a pre split tvxq mv but in a higher resolution. girls is purple line's daughter in a different colour scheme. i am not taking any criticism i'm right and you know it. the only thing it's missing is cunty yunho and honestly you could put him in there as he currently is and i wouldn't even bat an eye.

nerdy - purple kiss

yea yea obligatory purple kiss entry, i love them and while memem wasn't a hit for me nerdy MORE than made up for it. once again they had almost a month long promo period and they managed to hit a variety of different looks from reimagined alt school uniforms to overly large sweaters. nerdy is probably tied for zombie from last year for me for best styling they've ever had. also rbw stylists are the only valid stylists for knowing how to dress someone who isn't a size zero.

sparkling - chungha

i love the idea of combining bird imagery and ocean imagery. it makes zero sense logistically if you give it an ounce of thought BUT the combination of feathers and sparkles and iridescent sheen with coral and lots of bright colours are such a lush visual experience that who even cares that birds don't swim. or fish don't fly. whatever look at the sparkles.

doom du doom - p1harmony

honestly i had a bit of struggle deciding on if i wanted to include this song or back down, because they both have really fun and creative mvs, but doom du doom won out in the end because i liked the stage styling more. the mv and its broke grimy street urchin olympic theme is so weird and charming and i love that they just have a guy hanging out in the background of all the shots just to be the guitar player. the choreo's fun af and actually uses their members' skills (see my choreo post), and it's a great touch that they had a couple of different flags made and they rotate them occasionally.

hair cut - xdinary heroes

like with the p1harmony entry, i had to decide which one of their two cbs from this half of the year i wanted to include, and it was TOUGH. i loved the styling for test me and admittedly it scratches my personal itch for punky shit, i like the ideas happening in hair cut more. plus the promo material from hair cut is just chefs kiss. so many jype groups went for an alice in wonderland theme in their cbs this year and personally i preferred xh's version because at least they threw in a lot of other references that offset it from being a direct one to one concept. the edward scissorhands themed concept photos were probably some of my favourite concept photos of all time. and they also produced a very cool and fun medley film for their album highlights that really loops all their thematic references together and has some great outfits.

smartphone - yena

alright girlies pack it up, we got the definitive quirky girl fusion y2k cb, i don't wanna see anymore! i'm not a super avid follower of yena, but i really liked smiley and i like that she's got a consistent visual flavour. smartphone is a really fun blend of 00s references and retro gaming that gives it a different flavour then a lot of the y2k revival stylings that we've been seeing over the last year. although i'm not gonna lie, this cb makes me feel extra haggy, especially when she takes 'selfies' with the flip phones (for the young'uns, they did not have front cameras), but it's still very cute and fun.

ok to start off: i have to make a category within a category, and that category is 'boy groups that vomited colours and fabrics all over the stage for three minutes', because no joke there where THREE separate cbs that had nearly identical stylings (there where actually more. i almost included bae173 here) and i honestly could not pick between any of them which i liked more. so here's the shortlist:

can't stop shining - tempest // the ogs, it was bad news that started this trend in the first place. i actually think the css styling is better than bad news, but i gotta acknowledge her trendsetting nature and also the competition was TOUGH in the back half of the year. highlights: the mv, mcountdown 220908, inkigayo 220904, show champion 220907

party rock - cravity // i was ready to be disproving bc nothing will ever be party rock anthem but the kids won me over. every single stage is just. what is happening. 10/10. highlights: music bank 221028, inkigayo 221009, inkigayo 221002, music bank 221007

drummin' - to1 // while i don't love that they booted two members (only for them to appear on boys planet), the rebrand for to1 has been really successful for me. drummin' is a fun dorky retro concept with some great choreography. they had the most themed styling of the three, which occasionally had some fun marching band inspired outfits. highlights: the show 220802, music bank 220805, mcountdown 220728

i did actually talk about this mv briefly already, it's one of my all time favourite mvs from this year and maybe even one of my faves from the last several years. it's so stunning and heartfelt and deserves like 50 million more views.

honestly it was a toss up if i wanted to include halazia here or save it for the 2023 list because i wasn't sure what the stages were gonna look like, but now that i've seen a couple of them i'm confident this is the category i'd put it in for 2023 if i waited. i don't love the stage stylings but oh my fucking GOD the mv itself is a fucking masterpiece. the hala scarecrows...............

they went abroad and filmed in literally some of the MOST gorgeous locations i've ever fucking seen, which is what you should be doing @ kpop companies!! i'm tired of seeing stuff shot in la!!!! go to pakistan you cowards!!! they didn't make my choreo list this year but you should watch their studio choom to watch sya EAT the intro. ok here's a few stages with good styling too i guess: inkigayo 220724, the show 220726, the show 220802, mcountdown 220728

yea i know i'm the only kangta fan left on this webbed site and i don't care!!! this is a great mv with lot of great lighting effects and also a fantastic choice for the backup dancers costuming to include reflective taping. costume design that interplays with lighting is one of my specialties and i gotta shout it out the rare times it happens. also i'm pimp the og 90s it boy stage again, because i can and also it's a galaxy brained styling choice for him. and it has gorgeous set design.

gorgeous pink velvet suit, gorgeous mv that utilizes one of the most diffifult but most beautiful times to film: golden hour. he did do a stage in the pink velvet suit, but the mv is soooooooo pretty that it had to be on here.

458 - cix

for being produced with like $100 and however much it cost to rent that hawk, 458 is a fantastic bottle mv and definitely takes one of my top spots for having the most interesting combinations of imagery this year. there's a very obtuse connection to be made with the travels of dante through the circles of hell and motorsports and i wish they had played more into the idea of having driver/guide bc that could have been fun. also they should have called hajime kinoko and got hyunsuk strung up properly. it wouldn't have been that hard, he does commissions. just saying.

not my favourite of hyuna's showings, but she's still insane enough to make the list. love that she always greases up either herself or her dancers, or in this case, both. i'm gonna include some stages here bc the outfits are good, even though she didn't do that many: mcountdown 220721, inkigayo 220724.

birthday - red velvet

didn't love all the stylings, but the mv is a blast and the graphic design and all the concept and promo materials are soooooo good. my fave outfits are the 'candy' encrusted ones from music bank 221202.

mood trailer: awakening - trendz // this imagery literally never appeared anywhere else but this mood trailer is extremely cool.

28 reasons album trailer - seulgi // i wasn't expecting the mv to follow up on how good this trailer was, especially since it was for the album and not the mv, but damn it's good. it's so good. much better than the more half baked fairytale ideas that ended up in the mv proper.

i scanning film - nine.i // do i know what the hell is going on here? absolutely not. but the vfx are fucking CRAZY and i love how it's the intro song for the album.

character(s) featured:    moira dayne,  maddox lim about:     the vicious universe is a world in which people having a near death experience ( NDE ) usually results in them becoming extraordinary ( EO ), in which their powers link back to their last thought as they die.    for example,   victor vale’s last thought was about wanting the pain to stop and his power ended up being able to increase or decrease pain in others.    there’s two main players here: EO hunters and EOs   -   the EO hunters track down EOs to either kill them or keep them for experimentation.  both moira and maddox are EOs. roles:     literally anyone tbh.   EOs, hunters, etc. 

ELUSIVE AND SECRET-ISH HOTEL.          original.

character(s) featured:     ophelia wu about:     just a spicy and elite hotel that’s Super difficult to get into. it’s almost secretive but not really, it just isn’t advertised. it’s kind of like a speakeasy, you either know or you don’t. this is especially useful for those seeking refuge or running away. my character, ophelia, is placed there in WITSEC. she lives at the hotel and doesn’t ever really step outside of it. she works as an event planner and is like. Grumpy 24/7 LMAO and doesn’t care about her job really. her boyfriend works at the hotel bar ( they’re both in WITSEC together and his role is..........open :Eyes ). the hotel gives like eloise at the plaza vibes or hotel del luna ( minus death ) or hotel cortez ( mINUS DEATH ..... i mean there can be death but it’s not spn based ). i just imagine employees ( and some long term guests ) at the hotel have this weird messy found family ( family, loosely ) vibes. v dysfunctional and chaotic. roles:     EMPLOYEES ( managers, cook, cleaners, lifeguard, etc )................ guests !

character(s) featured:    sorcha dolivo,  zero seok ( @labriynths ) about:     the assassin guild sorcha and zero are a part of is called oleander & nightshade. it’s basically like this cesspool of recruited assassins working under a specific organization. they get assigned clients and jobs. the theme goes off of tarot cards and poisonous plants. what makes it spicy is that they have a code and are V good with it, until this more chaotic guild shows up. there’s a top paying client that wants an impossible job done and both guilds want them as a client........and the first guild to complete that job gets to sign them ((:  roles:     sorcha and zero are part of a six-member elite force,   so.............. :eyes: and then i would assume like six members for the chaotic messy guild.

SEQUOIA VALLEY.           original.

character(s) featured:    ilaria cortes,  damien black ( @moguui ),  caitlin dimarzo ( @teinshi ) about:     this is the world that my novel is set in for ilaria. it’s modern, but urban fantasy. it’s teen wolf but better and not white lol. anyways the location is set in sequoia valley, oregon ( used to be called redwood hallow but the town underwent severe rebranding after a massacre in the 60s ). college - centered, and the main group is enrolled in a history class focused on town origins, students will be given a group project to interview someone who’d been around during the massacre. the town has at least four dead bodies showing up yearly from “unexplained causes” and everyone is used to it at this point. a shift in the Vibes starts making the supernatural of the town experience hallucinations, loss of control, blacking out, heightened emotions / senses etc ( being vague on purpose LMAOO ) roles:     literally anyone living in the town!   peers at the college, classmates for the history class, professors, political figures, etc. i have a list of pre - established characters that would be in the novel so if ur interested in that, i can give out info on them <3

10. What was your favorite new release of the year?

Ooohhh this is so hard! I think mayhaps Babel by RF Kuang? Literally RF Kuang is queen of examining colonialism and history through a fascinating fantasy lens and also ripping your heart out at the same time. 10/10.

11. What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?

Okay I thought this one would also be hard but then I realized that there is an obvious answer for me and it's Parable of the Sower by Octavia E Butler. Believe it or not, I've never read a book by her before and now she's already one of my favorite writers. Like, god. it was so heavy to read but I flew through it. She did a great job of balancing the dystopia aspects with hope and resiliency. the development of the world and characters was so good, and the "god is change" stuff was genuinely really cool to think of.

Like, I was a teenager in 2010-2013 and I never thought I'd willingly read a dystopia again bc of that Experience.... but here I am, thinking this is probably in my top 10 books of the year.

Also, shout out to Beloved by Toni Morrison, Mythology by Edith Hamilton, The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker and Uprooted by Naomi Novik - other backlist books that I really, really loved.

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

I read a middle grade horror book called Scary Stories for Young Foxes by Christian McKay Heidicker and it was reeeeally good. i will never look at beatrix potter the same way again skskfjfjjskdfkf iykyk.

Another book I was surprised by was Far Sector by NK Jemisin and Jamal Campbell. well. surprised is the wrong word since I picked it up bc NK Jemisin wrote it and it won a Hugo for best graphic novel. But after checking it out I realized it was a green lantern comic, which I could not care less about lol. BUT. It was actually really good once I gave it a shot - it's a stand alone space mystery political adventure! very fun!

And one more I was blown away by was An Invitation from a Crab by panpanya. It's a indie manga that my coworker lent me and it's incredibly surreal and dreamlike and weird, but I kinda am obsessed with it.

25. What reading goals do you have for next year?

For some reason I like to wait till that like, 1 week period between Christmas and New Years to fully define my reading goals, but I have thought about it a little! I always read at least 2 classics I never got to in high school/college, so I was thinking maybe Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston, since I own both of those. I'd also like to read a Russian classic too since I've never tried one of those.

I've never read any true crime and I think it'd be fun to branch out and read a couple from that genre next year!

This isn't a goal per se, but I'd also love to read all of Samantha Shannon's The Bone Season series next year, bc I love her writing a ton!

ok first of all love that for us second of all i wish i could help u babe but i'm in the same boat 💀 i graduated w my degree in may of 2021 so i'm only abt 1.5 years out and i have exactly zero career plans + am planning to leave the job where i currently work after two years bc i want to move to the city where my twin lives and stay there for a bit so!

the thing is tho i've never really thought about my degree in terms of career path i just picked international studies + history bc i was 18 and i was interested in so much and those two fields together encompass such a wide range of disciplines. and like with i.s. there's obviously like...politics and government positions and then there's like the nonprofit sector there's cultural exchange...but you can also always just do something that has literally nothing to do with your degree. like between now + all the different jobs i had while i was still in school i've worked for nonprofits, i've worked in hospitality, i've worked in cultural exchange, i've worked in education, i've worked service jobs, i had a stint where i got paid for editing...like, honestly, i'm not the best person to give career advice bc i'm not really at a point in my life where i want to center myself around a career (and honestly don't know if i'll ever reach that point!). like i just want to travel and make stuff and spend time with people i love, and find jobs where there's at least something interesting or fun or new to learn. i think if u are also a young/recent graduate trying to figure shit out my biggest advice is just don't view your degree as something you're tied down to, view it as an experience that has (hopefully?) left you with an array of skills that can be applied to pretty much anything as long as ur just creative + flexible about it, y'know? like i think the whole sentiment of having to "do something with your degree" can be kind of stressful and limiting sometimes. you don't need to do anything with it; it's an experience that you've already had and you've changed and grown and learned because of it. look at the person you are now and the skills you have now and ask what you want to do with yourself, y'know?

I assume you're in therapy already? If not - I always told myself I would if I ever seriously considered dying. There was a time when I was avoiding therapy cause I thought they were just going to tell me lies but I made myself go anyway and it really helped, like it made me hate not hate myself and all that and from there I was able to actually get better. Even though looking back most of it was incorrect after all, but it was what I needed to hear ig. (ofc I didn’t say I wanted to die bc I didn’t want them to treat me different or take me away idk…)

If you’re radfem leaning + female(idk your sex ofc) meeting up with radfems irl can be great. They’re understanding of detrans people and there are often other detransitioners too (also everyone I’ve met is super cool) so it’s a great way to make new friends imo. There might be in person detrans meetups specifically but I haven’t heard of them. 

Either way I’ve heard the first few months of coming off hormones are really hard emotionally (especially if you go cold turkey, because the hormone imbalance messes with your brain) so I hope it gets better for you soon! I’m sure it will get better in the future, whether that’s in a year or ten.

Hello, Anon. I'm so glad to hear that therapy has helped you. Unfortunately, my past experiences with therapy have been overwhelmingly negative, and even if this weren't a significant driving factor in my avoidance of it, I just do not have the time, money, or resources to try to go through that process again. Healthcare over on my side of the pond is far from great and the mental health sector is particularly damning. It was the mental health sector that cleared me for hormone replacement therapy despite my dysphoria presenting "abnormally," in their words, after all...

That said, I'm generally (and thankfully) not quite so anguished as I was when I wrote those posts. I hold a lot of emotions inside of me without much of an outlet, and have for most of my life, and when you internalize so much, you're bound to spill over eventually. My outbursts are far from pretty and more than likely disturb unfortunate onlookers—but they're also usually short-lived and not an accurate indicator of what I truly feel. I know what I need, and what I actually believe, and I try to remind myself of this every time it gets to be a little too much. I will be okay, if not out of destiny then because I need to be.

Im gonna be honest i think these disagreements with the term transandrophobia are falling into very hypothetical semantics. If oppression that is specific for transmasculine people does exist then why not call it what it is? Most people understand transandrophobia as meaning That: the oppression transmasculine people face, and not the implication that misandry is somehow real. I wasnt there for the origin of the term so if it was in the middle of people harassing trans femmes then i think criticism towards that sector of pro transandrophobia people can exist without disregarding the term entirely. god i hate tumblr so much, i wrote you like 3 paragraphs and it just crashed. ill try to repeat and give u as much detail but pls feel free to ask if u want to know about certain things;;

i came to Germany under a student preparation visa. the way i got such a visa is by applying to a language school (i applied to their university pathway program but im not sure if that’s a necessary part of your application. i would assume not). i signed up for their most intensive language course (which is necessary as you need a minimum of smth like 15 hours per week) then, i applied to a university and got a conditional acceptance letter. without the university acceptance, i could only apply for a language preparation visa which is much more likely to be rejected especially due to the pandemic + has less time on it + i believe you get no residence permit? so if you decide to come here for study-reasons, id highly recommend the student preparation visa (or even student visa if you’re eligible) over the language preparation visa. my girlfriend came here under the student visa and another advantage is, once you study in a German university, it’s easier to stay & get a job here. in my case, there were some issues and complications tho. they told me (and the website also says this) that it’ll take up to two months. however i waited for 7 months for my visa and after waiting for months without any kind of update or information from their end, my gf pushed me to get a lawyer especially bc she felt like they were being discriminatory towards me. i thought it was highly unnecessary but she & her other friends that have lived in germany a while & my aunt who lives here all insisted on it, and they were all right that it makes a difference. the lawyer didn’t even have to do anything other than tell them that she represents me, and after they got that message they gave me the visa i spent 7 months waiting for. i was also told that in the applications, they often discriminate against female foreigners bc they worry we’ll come here and become prostitutes, or that we’ll look for a German husband.

i actually know two Ukrainians from my language course! one of them is a Ukrainian man who has lived in Germany for iirc 8 years, he came here for work. as he’s in IT, he could easily get a job here. since he has worked here for several years (i think through the work visa path, you need to be working here 5 years to be eligible? but im not super sure), he’s now eligible to apply for citizenship but only if his German level is above B1 i think. the Ukrainian woman i met moved here because her husband got work here. if you’re considering working here, there are certain jobs that are in high demand in Germany due to a deficit:

from my experience, most people i met who came here for work (excluding guest workers) have come here to work in IT, programming, or data science. however, also keep in mind that many foreigners come here for work or expect to be able to find work & are sorely disappointed. Ukrainians are among the groups in Germany with the highest unemployment rates:

however it is definitely possible as ive met countless people who have done it. ive even met people who just did a crash course in IT and then got an IT job in Germany & moved here using that. you just need to plan ahead and be in the right field basically. if you’re in those fields with a high demand, you could potentially get the EU blue card which is a pretty valuable type of permit and makes it quicker for you to get permanent residency in Germany as well as easier for you to work in other countries within the EU. however i heard it can be difficult to get that, and bear in mind foreigners that studied in a German university & then worked here vs people with a blue card (at least from what my gf told me) don’t have that much of a difference in terms of time they must wait until they’re eligible for permanent residency.

i hc that the only ppl that can use the black mesa sweet voice are benrey and coomer. full hc under th CUTTT

in the past, when benrey was contained and under constant surveillance, black mesa tried to replicate the sweet voice. like, a man made version of it. bc hey why not! lets just do things for Science! find a way to weaponize it and sell it to the government! typical black mesa shenanigans. but after trying to Inject this power into Many 'volunteers', and watching them Combust right after, black mesa ditched the project pretty fast. (the name 'black mesa sweet voice' is STILL patented tho! the name just kinda stuck)

anyway, Years after this (like mid 80s), during one of the experiments black mesa did with benrey (this one being 'shoot pure antimatter at him and see what happens' bc benrey just cant seem to physically DIE, at this point they're just trying to see what kills him), coomer was sort of in the wrong place at the wrong time. yes, he was a quantum physicist, but hes only been working at this sector of black mesa for a few years so he didn't exactly have clearance to be in this area. an extra pair of helping hands were needed for this experiment, and even if coomer didnt have the proper qualifications for these experiments, he was dragged in last minute on a whim.

coomer is tasked with manning the laser and aiming it at benrey, who is just calmly sitting on a chair in the middle of the room. hes not even tied up or anything hes just chillin. coomer already has a weird gut feeling. whether it be the sympathy he has for benrey, or the oddly mischievous glint in this his Eyes. he doesnt exactly feel right partaking in an experiment that is literally just 'lets see if we can kill this person but like Permanently this time', but it is what it is.

besides, it seemed like a simple enough task. but bc black mesa is just,, bad luck all around. it obviously Wasn't.

anyway, shit goes wrong, as things usually do in black mesa. the laser meant to shoot at benrey just fucking Explodes upon activation, sending coomer through the glass and directly into benrey, both of them roughly hitting the wall opposite the laser.

the room is an absolute wreck, debris is EVERYWHERE, things are on fire, its just Rough. not to mention everyone in the room is dead. somehow excluding benrey and coomer, who were (again, somehow) both knocked unconscious.

benrey recovers rather quickly, as he usually does, and calmly follows black mesa security back into containment (not without being a pain in the ass about it. just being. horribly annoying). coomer, however, is rushed off to the medical ward. he miraculously survived, sure, but hes still badly wounded from the explosion. (he actually kinda dies briefly during this, but is brought back soon after)

coomer is. essentially comatose for several weeks. coomers wife and bubby making frequent visits just to see how he's doing (bubby practically hovering around the medical ward 24/7 since he already lives at black mesa).

when coomer wakes up hes just. different. not completely, hes still coomer, but he just seems Off. delayed responses, mobility issues, General Spaciness. hes sleep deprived/lethargic bc hes constantly having nightmares. he has this heightened awareness and its Hell. he had some minor problems with hallucinations beforehand but now those problems are Constant™. but most importantly, his mood also fluctuates a Lot, seemingly going through a fairly deep depression, with sudden bouts of anger n frustration. hes just going thru it rn!!!

coomer ends up going through INTENSE examination. from dozens of blood tests and physicals and cat scans and all that jazz. the scientists cant figure out much, but what they do end up figuring out is coomers dna??? that shit is WARPED. the explosion did something, colliding with BENREY did Something. intergalactic bullshit is Afoot.

coomr ends up getting better, close to how he was before the whole failed experiment mess, but hes still a bit different. whatever it is he Sees, whatever it is that changed in his brain, is v obviously burdening him. BUT he can use the sweet voice now and its a LOT of fun! very easy to settle friendly debates by shooting sweet voice at their face in retaliation!

black mesa takes a LOT of interest in coomer because of this though. at first he was just another expendable scientist on their payroll but now hes unintentionally become a successful volunteer in their defunct sweet voice experiment from years ago. his dna literslly shifted and hes still alive??? coomer suddenly has offers for further experimentation (for extra pay) but he denies all of them. mostly bc like... cybernetics and cloning seems like a Lot for right now like hes still getting used to the whole sweet voice thing,,, no thanks,,, fhdjdhdj

Even as a CT fan i still stand by what i say that Tifa deserves someone better than Cloud she’s too good for him in AC i hated how he treated her the girl was so vulnerable she needed someone to be there for her ,she’s a selfless person who thinks about other before herself ,yes as a CT i still think he was insensitive toward her esp after everything she’s gone through just to save him i still cringe the moment he become sonic just to save A but he was meh toward saving T if it wasn’t for A (1)

Hey anon.

I had to take a bit to think about this one last night. For one, there’s been a lot of discourse over on Twitter, and I’ve seen this rhetoric thrown around that Cloud was casting Tifa aside in favor of Aerith. It seems to upset Cloti fans and they start to question everything. 

There’s going to be links to other posts in here as well, I’ll put them as subjects come up.

I think a lot of people think Tifa deserves better. She is selfless and definitely puts others before herself constantly. The thing is, we may feel that way, but Tifa doesn’t. Tifa loves Cloud. 

What sucks about this is how much trauma both of them have been through. Cloud is just a mess. He’s seen his village burned down, his mother killed, he thought Tifa was killed, then he’s stuck in a tank and experimented on for four years, they get out, he sees his best friend die in front of him, and he mentally completely collapses and creates his false persona. Then while that’s going on, when he meets up with Tifa and fully assembles this new Cloud personality, we go on the adventure.

Then Aerith pops in. You’re with her for a very short time and she’s killed in front of him. Cloud also attempted to kill her twice before this. Add this to the already compounding shit that’s happened to him. 

Cloud ultimately was Aerith’s bodyguard. Cloud historically takes these types of responsibilities very seriously. He did in BC with somebody he barely knew. He knew Aerith, so that makes it even worse. He couldn’t protect her.

I also think that CoT does Cloud some justice. AC is where things get hairy and he got that Emo Cloud reputation that seemed to never leave him. Remake is clearing that up. The devs keep saying Cloud is an awkward dude. He’s not emo. 

Case of Tifa and The Kids are Alright

Tifa and Cloud deal with their guilt differently. Tifa pretends everything is fine. Even then, Cloud picks up on the issues in CoT and tells her that he’ll remind her to be strong. This scene takes place before the downward spiral starts with him. 

I feel like with AC they’ve released a lot of information to clarify that Cloud’s issue with Aerith was guilt related not pining. In these discussions, Zack is also forgotten, and I’d say Zack had an even bigger impact on Cloud due to their relationship and the amount of time he knew the guy. 

Why Zack is Important to Cloud

I have my thoughts on why they did what they did with AC. They also changed AC and rereleased it which in itself says they realized they may have made a few mistakes and/or just wanted to clarify the story. 

In terms of Cloud putting Aerith as a higher priority,  I need examples. Many of the ones I’ve been presented with over the last week are pieces of scenes to justify a point. The whole scene isn’t taken into account.

For example, the Train Graveyard (full of fun scenes, honestly), before Eligon when Cloud saves Aerith, this moment is regarded as so romantic. Fact is, he gets her out of the way, gets up, doesn’t even check on her and walks away. Tifa takes the baton and deals with Aerith’s well being. 

One of the funnier ones to me that they will blatantly ignore is when the train falls. He clearly diverts to his left to cover Tifa. The screenshots and analysis for that scene are below. There are also things to look at on the cargo container fall and the triple arm grab. (Part 4 of this series was more of a parody)

Train Graveyard Part 5 Cloud and Tifa nope the fuck out

We’ve got Chapter 17 with the Whisper Tornado that Aerith gets stuck in. Tifa is the one who saves her from it. Cloud is standing right next to her and does nothing. 

The Shinra building rescue is often brought up as well. They claim Tifa didn’t care about saving Aerith, but it’s so far from the truth it hurts. Tifa and Barret both know the situation with Elmyra the first time they talk to her about this is escalating. Remember, Cloud is mentally 16. He thinks he can keep pushing and get his way. Ultimately the team calms him down and they go back to Sector 7. 

Cloud was very concerned about Tifa during Chapter 13. He didn’t seem to be in a rush at all to get back to Elmyra’s house. He was happy they found Wedge. 

So we go through the night, you get one of three resolutions. The next morning, Tifa and Barret back Cloud up in going to the Shinra building. They make it up there and Tifa gets discouraged because there is a very large security presence. Some say SEE SHE DIDN’T WANT TO GO, CLOUD HAD TO TELL HER.

Except it’s BARRET that says that. Tifa thinks it may be a lost cause. Barret says some lost causes are worth fighting for. Cloud then says “Let’s just think this through.” He wasn’t disagreeing with Tifa. Then Tifa is the one who points out the truck to get them in. Seems like she’s helping.

Once there, you have a few times when Cloud has to remind Barret to stay the course. There’s one time he reminds Tifa and that’s if you take the elevator. She’s also going down a bad path. Their goal is to rescue Aerith. He’s trying to keep her on track. 

Don Corneo’s basement is another one brought up. Cloud helps Aerith up. Why wouldn’t he? Girl just got knocked out with gas. He doesn’t blow Tifa off.

We can talk about how he blows Tifa off in Chapter 9 as soon as he sees the Chocobo Wagon too. Except once Aerith is up and goes over to see Aerith.

I’m not really sure why they’re so hellbent on making people think that he only cares about one person. Cloud cares about EVERYBODY he meets. They show it with Avalanche, they show it even with Barret and Red. He’s not a douchebag.

In terms of Cloud deserving Tifa, I am really torn on it. Yes, she deserves the best. I then look at Cloud and think of how much has happened to him (and to Tifa) and if he really does make Tifa happy, then my opinion doesn’t matter much.

I think once we get through Remake, we’ll have a better idea of how Cloud will be. He’s already pretty affectionate towards Tifa, so I’m not sure. 

I am curious about specific examples though to the second part of your question about him caring more about Aerith.
