so Batman supposedly died in a helicopter clash? Over the bay? The whole thing just felt incredibly anticlimactic. Like, you’re killing off Batman, Morrison! Make me believe it!

Gosh it’s hilarious when artists are like “I can draw that!” and don’t bother to use their reference photo properly.
There’s something…missing…from that picture.
Something that should be taking up over 50% of that view to be at that angle.
I can’t quite put my finger on it…
Oh. Wait.
Tumblr media
YOU LEFT OUT THE BRIDGE. To manage to have the exact view you’re using there you’d probably be just above Luna Park in Milsons Point. The angle on the Opera House sails is too side on to be from the same side of Kirribilli with the Bridge behind you.
And thanks Google, this was shot in 2009, so the city skyline around Circular Quay looks more accurate than the pics on my phone.
Anyway this boardroom is apparently on board a giant yacht directly IN Sydney Harbour because otherwise that giant coathanger would be obstructing half the view.

okay but Nightwing is fucking scary
I decided to read more 1999-2009 Nightwing comics materials (not only his Nightwing comics run) and why the fuck did I do that. I wish I didn't. I ruined my Nightwing in my head.
Current image in my head now:
He's fucking scary. Unstable. Very, very flawed. Exhausted. Loser. Survivor. Angry. Petty. Lost. Dark. Dark. Dark. I don't see Dick Grayson behind the mask anymore. I see only Nightwing.
Tumblr media
I'm trying to change the image, please help me, Nightwing fans. I'm scared to read more comics with him.

Ok sorry but why is no one talking about Aziraphale’s most bad ass scene in the entire fucking show? Like yes I know it was hot when he corrected his name when Furfur was butchering it and yes it’s amazing, but how are we all sleeping on the utter majesty of
Tumblr media
My brothers and sister in Christ. The growl. The stance. Did he swap again with Crowley? No, that is pure, raw bastard angel, serving up fresh cunt. If he had been holding his flaming sword in this scene, I would be posting this from the grave. Crowley would have instantly jizzed his pants and fell to the floor useless if he had seen this. This bitch ain’t soft, he’s rock hard and ready to FUCK. YOU. UP.

I WAS DOING PROCRASTINATED ENGLISH HOMEWORK AT 10:30 PM AND THIS BATFAM INTERACTION POPPED FULLY FORMED INTO MY BRAIN
Jason, staring down a defeated villain with his helmet off, dramatically monologuing like the theatre kid he is: Death didn't stop me the first time, what made you think you'd be the one to make it stick? Haven't you people learned? You cannot kill me in a way that matters.
Tim, pausing where he's taking down the remaining henchmen: hold on a second. I've heard that line before. did you just- did you just quote a Tumblr post in your takedown monologue?????
Jason, red in the face and blatantly embarassed: I don't know what the FUCK you're talking about, Replacement.
Dick, sweeping in on a grappling hook and knocking out a goon coming up behind Jason: No, he's definitely right. "decay exists as an extant form of life" and all that.
Jason, shoving his guns back into their holsters and walking away while grumbling to himself: and they wonder why I don't come to family dinners
Damian, popping out of the shadows: So long, fungus boy

So in my class we name our glue sticks to stop the kids losing or mistreating them - they're much less likely to lose a glue lid if you're shouting "oh no, Alfred's been decapitated". It's fun.
Now, I'm a big batfam girlie ✨ so naturally I named all our glues after these characters. We have Richard and Bruce and Stephanie and Barbara etc. you see the point.
Recently, the first glue stick ran out. It had to go in the bin so unfortunately it "died", and you'll never guess which glue stick was the first to die...
It was Jason.
You could not conceive the sound I made as I had to throw Jason in the bin as all the children shouted things like "Jason's dead" and "noooo Jason!"
Worst things worse, I couldn't even explain how ironic that was that Jason, the second robin, was the first glue to go!

Morrison is really incapable of writing Bruce in any tension though. It's like the audience is not supposed to believe Bruce is in any danger b/c "batman thinks of everything" and if he's in what's supposed to be an unescapable trap it turns out the bad guys just seriously underestimated his bench press.

Ok. Black Casebook. Time to see if any of this makes Morrison make more sense.
tl:dr below: You should PROBABLY at least read a summary of Robin Dies at Dawn, and having seen pictures of the various Other Batmen is like “oh so that’s a reference back to old stories” when they pop up. There’s nothing about their villains in the original stories though. Zurr-En-Arrh is weird in that I think actually what you need to know is this statement from Morrison: “two weeks after [Batman 112], Batman experienced the flashback hallucination that we know as the ‘Zurr-En-Arrh’ story.” Basically Batman 112 is ‘Bruce gets drugged with something that makes him lose the will to live’ and the original ‘Zurr-En-Arrh’ is a space adventure that might be a hallucination. Haven’t figured out how the rest fits in at this point.
So first up we have the national/racial stereotype Other Batmen category: Batman 62: This is the first Knight and Squire appearance (they’re incompetent and Batman and Robin show them how to work efficiently) Batman 65: Wingman! Who is the new Batman-to-be of ‘a northern European country’ (Morrison makes it Sweden/Norway) Dick just spends a lot of this angsting about being replaced due to his broken leg. (Spoiler: Dick is not replaced) Batman 86: Man-of-Bats and Little Raven (later known as Raven Red). Um. Native American stereotypes. Bruce and Dick dress up as Man-of-Bats and Little Raven to help them fool another tribe over secret identities. Yeah. Oh 1954. ‘Tec 215: The Batmen of All Nations - Knight and Squire again, Gaucho, Musketeer, Legionary, Ranger. (Ranger is later Dark Ranger). They come to Gotham to train! The Legionary gets replaced by a random crook who causes problems. This is just a pack of unfortunate cheap national stereotypes.
World’s Finest #89: Formation of the Club of Heroes (aka the Batmen Knockoff Meetup). Same crew as the last time, minus the Ranger, all summoned by John Mayhew to have their own club! Superman becomes chairman of the club. The reason why is deeply 1950s comics. (Clark apparently “threw a mountain” at a meteor of Kryptonite. This is clearly the most important fact in this comic) Honestly all you need from this set is basically see a couple of covers and pictures of these individuals to go “oh no racial stereotype Batman copycats”. Their villains do not appear. Next set seem to be the Weird Costume Crew:
‘Tec 235: this is a recap of Bruce’s origin story. Apparently Thomas Wayne dressed up as a Bat-Man for a masquerade ball once and punched a crook (Lew Moxon) who kidnapped him at the party. Thomas then defeats Lew Moxon, who Thomas sends to jail, then after he gets out Moxon apparently hires Joe Chill. Moxon then gets convenient amnesia and remembers none of this. Bruce wears the costume, Moxon remembers, and then gets hit by a truck. I sincerely doubt most of this is still in any way in continuity. Moxon appears to have popped up again between 2001 and 2004 but pre-Morrison.
‘Tec 241: Rainbow Batman. Bruce just wears Bat costumes of all colours (including rainbow) to distract the public from the fact Dick had hurt his arm rescuing a little girl out of costume. It’s really not that deep, Morrison. I have no idea what Morrison wants from these. Next up the creepy hallucinations! Batman 112: Bruce is exposed to a gas by Professor Milo that makes a person “lose the desire to live”. To solve this you apparently need a motivation to live and to keep moving for 24 hours, so they manufacture a mystery for Bruce to solve (they trick him that he’s not Batman and someone else is). Batman 113: Zurr-En-Arrh. Batman ‘travels to Planet X’ (probably hallucinates after flying his plane and his ‘head spinning’) Batman wears the red, yellow and purple costume. The ‘Bat-Radia’ has molecules that control atmosphere disturbances, and he has it still when he gets home. The Black Casebook claims “two weeks after [Batman 112], Batman experienced the flashback hallucination that we know as the ‘Zurr-En-Arrh’ story.”
Look, this is just Morrison enjoying making up a reason to connect Batman 112 and Batman 113 because they’re both sort of mindfuck episodes. ‘Tec 267: Bat-Mite. Bat-Mite comes from another dimension (originally from Mxyzptlk's dimension if I remember correctly? A quick peruse of old wikipedia tells me 'he used to be but now is more a hallucination' oh joy). The story is just standard old 5th dimensional imp trouble making.
Batman 134: The Rainbow Creature. It's a giant blob striped in different colours that gets its powers from absorbing power sources and then uses a wave of that colour to destructive effect (and loses it until it absorbs another power source) Red is heat/burns through things, blue is a freezing/frost aura, yellow turns things to mist, and "The green aura made us thin as leaves". Oh no. This is what Morrison is going to use, isn't it. Some weird hallucination about being flat. It also falls apart if it uses up all its powers without replenishing one.
Batman 153: Prisoners of Three Worlds - this is an alien with a transporter beam to other worlds? It is trying to acquire silver to power a disintegrator beam. Bruce and Kathy get 'their energy forms' transported to one world where they accidentally destroy things. The rest of them stays in the normal dimension and feels weak (this is due to standing on a manhole cover when zapped). Dick and Betty end up in the alien's dimension and find out the alien is a criminal. It's...fine? For a sequential plotline? Apparently it’s important for Kathy Kane characterisation but is that literally “Bruce and Kathy kissed”? Because that’s about all that happens. Batman 156: Robin Dies At Dawn! Finally something I recognise as getting referenced regularly. Bruce takes an isolation test to simulate solo space flight and starts hallucinating. The doctor worries about side effects. Bruce then continues to hallucinate incidents from the isolation while out on the streets, until a real life danger to Dick shocks him back to normal. (One of the few stories so far that have felt actually useful towards what Morrison is up to)
Plus some extracts from 52: weeks 30 and 47. These don’t count nearly as much as it’s actually Morrison writing prequel stuff for his story. 30: Dick saying Bruce has gone mad from hurt, the creepy eyes-on-his-fingers guy “cutting away Bruce’s demons/fear/paranoia that corrupted his life”. 47: More details of the Thorgal ritual (seven days in darkness).  “the situation can only arise because you think of it”
