Bette Kane: The original Batgirl and how her history never technically got retconned at all
So this is basically a repost from an old reblog I did but I doubt it's gonna get any traction so I've decided to post it here so more people can actually know about it. (I suggest actually reading what I wrote in the original thing cause there's some parts where I did at OP's comments and it'll look a bit weird here OOC)
Tumblr media
let's actually talk about that "continuity dependence" So Bette is regarded by most of the fandom as having only been Batgirl only in Pre-Crisis (some people also think that she just never re-appeared after 1967 but that's not true since she appeared as a key character in the ending three-parter conclusion to the 70s Teen Titans run which set up Titans West). As in, Bette has only ever been Flamebird Post-Crisis and Hawkfire Post-Flashpoint.
Something to explain the whole thing about how Bette became Flamebird, Marv Wolfman decided that the Titans West three-parter was canon and this wrote about it in the Secret Origins 1989 Annual. Except Babs was the first person to become Batgirl Post-Crisis which meant it couldn't be Bette (for some reason), thus the story was rewritten so that instead of being Bat-Girl, a competitive tennis named player Bette Kane joined the Titans West under the mantle of Flamebird (where she got the name, we'll never know). So basically, Post-Crisis Bette was never Batgirl, right? At least, not until that very small duration of time when Morrison brought back Kathy Kane, right?
Below is the following panel from Young Justice Issue #21 where Bette herself confirms she has been Batgirl in the past. (after the New Titans Secret Origins issue tried to make it seem like she'd always been Flamebird the entire time). Take not that she says this whilst fighting alongside the latest Batgirl, Cass Cain
Tumblr media
ok, so that only means the between 1985-2000, Bette was never Batgirl. Except that's not true. I especially know it's not true because of a key story that I think a lot of Batgirl stans are familiar with. Say hello to Page 10 of The Killing Joke. Also known as Bette Kane's first Post-Crisis first appearance.
Tumblr media
Wait, wait, wait. What are you saying? Are you saying that Bette's history as Batgirl was never erased with Crisis? Are you saying that the argument that Babs, Steph and Cass stans that "oh, but she doesn't count/oh, but she was written out of continuity" isn't true? That's not possible. Oh, you toxic autumn child. It was always possible. It was merely that the spoutings of Babs stans who were angry that she wasn't the first Batgirl were taken as gospel /j (that or just how low her appearances have been throughout her creation)
Now, that just leaves us with one final era to go: Post-Flashpoint. Now unfortunately, I don't have anything from New 52 that implies she was Batgirl and I can't take the whole contracted timeline thing as concrete either so I'll just say this: Bette is in the same boat as Steph and Cass in terms of their backgrounds as Batgirl being erased in the New 52 before reclaiming their histories back.
Now I do have evidence of Bette being Batgirl Post-Flashpoint - Dark Nights Death Metal: The Last Stories Of The DC Multiverse. More specifically, the story "Together" where it shows nearly every single Titans and Teen Titans member (along with some Fearsome Five, Project Defiance and Young Justice and weirdly missing Team Titans). On the bottom left hand corner, you can see cast of the 70s Teen Titans run which includes Bette Kane as Batgirl.
Tumblr media
And so there you go. Bette's history as Batgirl was never erased and is a legitimate member of the mantle as its originator.
If you sincerely think she doesn't count as Batgirl, I think you should go and take a deep look in the mirror and see for yourself what that speaks about you.

Flamebird Analysis: The odd treatment of Bette Kane and her history/experience
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batwoman (2011-2016) #1
Okay so first of all, Kate; rude much?
Second of all... was Flamebird's costume really that impractical? Especaially when compared to Kate's costume.
While admittedly Flamebird's original costume was not exactly the height of practicality...
(Although she still seemed quite capable of holding her own in it)
Tumblr media
Beast Boy (2000) #2
However she later does in fact get a more practical outfit which she also kickass ass in.
Tumblr media
Beast Boy (2000) #4
And we do know that its Flamebird's second (more practical-looking costume) which Kate burns, as Bette ends up suiting up in her aforementioned spare after Kate fires her...
Tumblr media
Batwoman (2011-2016) #3
While I am admittedly not an expert on combat outfits; Flamebird's second costume to me seems like it walks a good line between aesthetic and practicality. It has plenty of flair and style to it, but also appears quite flexible and overall not really too drastically different from Kate's Batwoman costume in this regard (rather hypocritical of Kate to say "you need a uniform" while she wears a long wig for no apparent reason apart from style).
If anything...
Tumblr media
The "uniform" which Kate gives Bette kinda strikes me as being less practical for the situation compared to the Flamebird costume which she burned. Like Bette's mask seems to be just a piece of fabric tied around her face, which certainly feels like it should be looser and not be as sleek and flexible as the Flamebird costume.
Building off this, from what I've seen and looked over so far, the treatment of Bette kinda feels like it has a weird... juxtaposition at times between what's getting told and what's being shown, I guess.
Like on one hand...
Tumblr media
It's shown by both Bette's comments here and the existence of her old Flamebird costumes that she has been experience vigilante for sometime. Longer than Kate I think, if I'm understanding the timeline all correctly.
There seems to be this odd case of both having Kate and the narrative treat Bette as an inexperienced rookie... while also having Bette and the narrative establish Bette as having been a Teen Titan, who has fought Deathstroke and presumably has years of experience.
Even Kate's codename for Bette indicates a rookie status...
Tumblr media
However despite the references to Bette's past career and capabilities, and Bette's protests of being more capable than Kate gives her credit for, and Kate also immediately feeling quite shitty at how harsh she was when firing Bette...
The narrative still, from what I understand, kinda vindicates Kate entirely by having Bette get brutalised to the point of falling into a coma immediately after she defies Kate by heading out as Flamebird after getting fired... so I guess Kate was right? I don't know.
Like I said, I just find all of this quite of a weird portrayal. I've been curious about Bette lately on account of her being the original Batgirl (or rather, Bat-Girl), which is a very iconic mantle to the general "Bat-Mythos" even if Bette herself is far less remembered.
I guess one thing I find especially strange is how this is from the first issues of Batwoman 2011... meaning that this was right at the start of the whole New 52 Reboot stuff and so they could've presumably just retconned Bette's experience to make her an actual rookie sidekick instead of this weird half-measure where they both establish her past experience as canon while also otherwise ignoring it.
There's other stuff which I could go over; such as Bette's coma, her stint as Hawkfire, her enrolling in West Point... all of which probably has room for more detailed specific analysis by someone more familiar with both Bette and also the Batwoman comics (I've only fairly recently started looking into this stuff out of curiosity as I work my way through learning more comic history).
So I'll skip to a more recent appearance by Bette in 2017...
Tumblr media
Detective Comics (1937—Present) #967
This whole exchange feels once again like Kate ignoring Bette's history, experience and capabilities. Especially the whole "pass second year in the top 99th percentile of your class and maybe I'll put in a good word with you to Batman" thing. No one else needed be top of their class at West Point, or attend West Point at all, to be a superhero. And it just seems strange to have Bette getting forced down that specific road.
Tumblr media
Like; going by publication history, Bette was considered part of the original Teen Titans team due to debuting in the 1960s-1970s period. In fact she joined the team before the likes of Beast Boy, Raven, Starfire and Cyborg (at least in terms of publication anyway).
While I'm not entirely certain how her current age placement in the roster, they did still at least establish her as being a Teen Titan who fought Deathstroke and so presumably in the same generation as Nightwing (even if possibly a bit younger) and other core members. The from what I understand the Titans are currently considered senior and experienced enough to be the current "top team" of the hero scene in canon.
So all together this adds up to, as I keep saying, a strange contrast between Bette's stated/implied history and how she gets treated by the narrative.
Tumblr media
DC's Legion of Bloom (2023) #1
Last year Bette did make a return as Flamebird (not Hawkfire). Which could mean one of two things...
Kate finally acknowledged Bette as ready/worthy/experienced enough to go out on her own
Bette went screw it and decided she didn't need Bette's permission
Honestly kinda hopping the later cause it brings to mind a bit of the Beast Boy comic which I quite liked...
Tumblr media
Beast Boy (2000) #3
Better gets a very stern reprimand from Nightwing (some she admires), and is told she's not cut out for this world and quits. This comes after she's spent most of her appearance in this run being kinda a comedic relief in the form of her repeated failures to bail Beast Boy outta jail (since she's never posted bail before and didn't know how)
But after this..?
Tumblr media
Beast Boy (2000) #4
She comes back, with a new (more practical-looking, as I discussed before) costume and beats up several bad guys to help out Gar (who in turn really appreciates her arrival and assistance).
Tumblr media
Batwoman (2011) #3
Making this post I've noticed an interesting similarity and contrast between Beast Boy and Batwoman comics in regards to Bette. Both times, Bette gets very sternly reprimanded and told she's not cut out to be a hero and ordered not to be one by someone she admires/values the opinion of.
Both times she defies them and goes out anyway, putting on the same costume both times in fact.
But while the Beast Boy comic portrays her as competent and capable, even having her involvement appreciated by Gar...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile in Batwoman?
Tumblr media
Batwoman (2011-2016) #4
Bette's defiance almost immediately ends with her horribly injured, and in turn accidentally helps the DEO work out Batwoman's identity.
Two events regarding the same character which that character reacts to in a similar manner but one ends with her vindicated and the other... very much not.
Tumblr media
DC's Legion of Bloom (2023) #1
Moving back to Bette's recent appearance in DC's Legion of Bloom. West Point is 4-years in total, and when we last saw Bette she was on her second year at the latest. So with the nature of comic book time, I find it unlikely she'd already graduated.
Her return to Flamebird could also have something to do with Infinite Frontier (I don't fully understand how it works, but apparently everything's canon now again sort of?) re-canonising Bette's competence? That sounds like kinda an amusing thought tbh; multiverse shenanigans happen and Bette wakes up one morning feeling suddenly competent again. Good for her.
Anyway I hope this is a good sign for Bette's character. Even if she's unlikely to be a major player, would still be nice for her appearance to at least depict her as capable. Plus as I said, comic book time means if she does actually stick to West Point, then she'd unlikely to be graduating (and get allowed to be a vigilante) anytime soon. So at that point you might as well just let her go be rich and play tennis since its not like that's a route to her actually doing anything.
Bette seems pretty neat from what I've seen of her, so I wish her the best. Even if Legion of Bloom continues the running joke of her trying and failing to recreate Titans West.

Teen Titans East (Robin, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Bumblebee, Guardian, Speedy, and Harlequin) and Teen Titans West (Bat-Girl, Lilith, Gnarkk, Beast Boy, Hawk, Dove, and Golden Eagle) pose for a commemorative photograph in Teen Titans (vol. 1) #52 (December, 1977). Art by Don Heck and Bob Smith; colors by Jerry Serpe; letters by Milt Snappin.
This was the penultimate issue of the series, the cancellation of which had already been announced. The following issue would be the last, featuring Bumblebee and Guardian looking through a casebook to learn the untold tale of the formation of the team. When Bumblebee and Guardian finish the other members arrive to announce that the Teen Titans are being disbanded so the members can purse their own solo careers.
That didn't last long, though, as the team would be back in 1980 under new management - Marvel Wolfman and George Perez - as the New Teen Titans.

Bette Kane relationships that are important to you? Ideas for new supporting characters that would suit her?
For my headcanon reboot, I'm sourcing opinions. I have an idea of what kind of character I want Bette to be (she's been several different things in the comics), but am much hazier on who I want her to interact with and have strong, long-term relationships with.
She's the former Tennis star who left the gig early (leaving money on the table) because she got bored of it after a Golden Slam. Was going to have her study sports medicine at UCLA, then become an orthopedic surgeon (she's pretty much amazing at anything she attempts). She's been playing tennis competitively for years, so would have millions, but not tens of millions, of dollars at this young age. But if you really like, I guess she could keep up tennis instead.
For the record, in this universe Kate Kane debuts as Batwoman in her late 20s, and Dick is only 4 years younger than her. If I keep Bette the same age as Dick (as I was planning to), then Kate as mentor doesn't work for me.
I was thinking about a Titans West sort of thing with Mal and Karen and maybe later Don Hall and Holly Granger. I'd like at least one more member, though, so Bette isn't a third wheel before Don and Holly arrive and after Hank leaves (when Don "dies" - it's a whole thing). Of course, if she's continuing to pursue a career in tennis, this could be less of a thing.
Hank's in D.C. and Gar in New York at this time, so that puts the out as her daily companions.
I love the idea of characters (especially non-team characters) having civilian supporting casts - ordinary people - around them. But I'm not too good at inventing characters.

POISON MARY FLAMEBIRD HEADCANON AU GO
OKAY SO WE ALL KNOW MARY HAMILTON IS BASED OFF BETTE KANE WHO COMICS-WISE IS KNOWN AS BAT-GIRL, FLAMEBIRD AND HAWKFIRE.
In the Arrowverse, she doesn't have a codename (not even as tech support like Overwatch) until she becomes Poison Ivy 2.0, AKA Poison Mary.
Now, we have to contextualize Mary growing into a more prominent vigilante field worker (like Luke's journey) through the lens of her own self atonement. Alice took the fall for her crime and Mary let her. In what we now know as the series finale post-cancellation, even Alice is trying to recover and become better. So Mary decides she needs to do the same.
to ME, Poison Mary's abilities weren't completely wiped out. They went dormant and grew weak enough that its power didn't conjure dissociation, but it's still there, festering, waiting to burst out if she's under the right amount of stress.
Killing a guy, running a clinic, both your sisters leaving you, your closest friends not telling you about their homoerotic tension until they were already together, the guy you like finally accepting his PTSD, and a new big bad popping up from the desolate part of Gotham they bombed sounds stressful enough, right?
The new big bad is their fucking fault... that news crew getting attacked is their fault... Mary does not like it when bad things are her fault.
SO when her powers do start to pop back up again, she is obviously terrified. Convinced she's going to hurt someone, again. But she's not dissociative or obsessive or too powerful. She doesn't feel a pull to Poison Ivy. Her powers have become her own. So she chooses to use them wisely this time around, and protect Gotham from outside both the Batcave and the Clinic.
Remember when Hawkfire had pyrotechnic abilities?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WELLL after a forest fire, birds can help a forest regrow. The bark is burned enough to make eating the inside of the tree quite easy. They spread seeds from elsewhere over the devastated ground. A slowly regrowing forest is basically what Mary's power level is at at this point, so... FLAMEBIRD.
ALSO to me Mary gets splashes of green in her Flamebird costume akin to these designs as a visual reference to her time as Poison Mary
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and also look at this pic of Supergirl as Flamebird
Tumblr media
BLACK AND RED LIKE BATWOMAN!!!!!!!!!!
I think Arrowverse Flamebird's color scheme would be mostly red and black to show her loyalty to and affiliation with the Bat Team but again some green for Poison Mary and some yellow in the red to imply fire
ALSO remember there's okay there's like a tumblr post about how characters should wear costume colors that aren't related to their superpowers so that it surprises people, and Flamebird having a name like fucking Flamebird with mostly non-nature colors on her costume WHEN SHE HAS FUCKING PLANT POWERS? ultimate surprise attack.
ALSO give mary hamilton a fire gun i love hawkfire's tech

I love you so much titans west!
(Fair warning I'm using photos from all over the comic timelines)
All of them can be considered longtime members of the titans organization.
Tumblr media
Golden eagle/Charley Parker/Ch'al Andar
Half thanagarian half earthling superhero. Son of thanagarian fel andar(who himself is half n half) and human Sharon parker.
It's been a while since I read anything with him in it so can't say for sure who he's been romantically linked with.
Tumblr media
Lilith clay/lilith Jupiter known as the heroine omen long time member of the titans organization.
a powerful telepath with the power of limited foresight as well as other abilities.
Been romantically linked to both gnarrk and garth/tempest
Tumblr media
Garfield logan aka Beast boy/changeling
Much like lilith, gar is also a Long time member of the titans organization
a green-skinned superhero who has the power to transform into any animal. Originally a member of the Doom Patrol, he joined the Teen Titans after the death of the other Patrollers.
Romantically linked to notable titans terra/tara Markov in the main comic continuity and raven/rachel roth in alternative universes/continuities
Tumblr media
Mary Elizabeth kane aka bat-girl/flamebird/hawkfire(we don't talk about hawkfire)
Athletic rich heiress. Professional tennis player. Flamebird to dicks Nightwing. First batgirl
Younger Biological 1st cousin of Bruce wayne and Kate kane. I love her so much. Much like lilith and Garfield bette is also a long time member of the titans organization.
Romantically had a crush on Nightwing since they were kids(before bette and bruce were said to be cousins) . It's also been heavily implied that she had a adult fling with hank hall during their time on titans west.
Tumblr media
Hawk and dove
Twin brothers hank(red) and Don hall(blue)
Hawk and Dove are empowered by the mystical Lords of Chaos and Order.
Hanks a long time titans member same with Don but he died at one point.
Hanks been romantically linked to both bette kane and dawn granger/dove II(titans tv show)
Tumblr media
Bumblebee and herald/vox/hornblower/guardian
Karen beecher-duncan and Malcom Duncan
I love them omg I love them.
In order to help make Herald look good in front of the team, Beecher secretly made herself a bumblebee-themed super-suit and attacked the Teen Titans. She escaped without this ruse being revealed.
When she later explained to Mal and the Titans what she had done, they were impressed enough to offer her membership, which she accepted.
Karen is a research engineer at star labs making non lethal weaponry and Malcom whose a accomplished jazz musician owns a nightclub called Gabriel horns. obviously married to one another. They have a family together to.
Tumblr media
Gnarrk aka ape-boy/cave boy
Gnarrk was a 17-year-old caveman whom Teen Titans Mal Duncan and Kid Flash(wally) encountered on a trip to the Stone Age.they Accidentally brought gnarrk back. The titans helped him adapt to the modern age. Romantically link to lilith.
Tumblr media
Duela dent
Aka harlequin(not to be confused with harley quinn)/jokers daughter
Another long time member of the titans organization
It was always an enigma who she was and where she came from, even to herself. She eventually discovered she was a reality-hopping inhabitant of Earth-3, and was not the Joker's daughter, but the daughter of the Jokester's(think heroic alternate joker from another universe) and Three-Face(female heroic alternate two face named Evelyn dent) as well as being the step daughter of earth 3s heroic riddler.
Romantically linked to a talon(think earth 3 evil version of the robins) Who wasn't actually named outside of his code name (but could be alt tim drake) who also crossed over into new earth as a titans member. So Romeo and juliet style romance.

Who's Who In The DC Universe #2: Bat-Mite, Batwoman
Bat-Mite by Marshall Rogers
A pint-sized imp from another dimension
Claims to be the greatest fan of Batman and Robin, comes to Earth to watch his idols in action
Loves to use his powers to complicate matters for the Dynamic Duo
Forever being ordered back to his home dimension by Batman, like a bad boy being sent to stand in a corner
Bat-Mite is a silly character that mainly appeared in the Silver Age. He did have a mini-series in the New 52 era and has made a few appearances in the various Batman animated series. If you don’t mind an occasionally silly Batman, Bat-Mite can be a fun character. If the “Dark Knight Strikes Again” Miller-Batman is your ideal then Bat-Mite is not the character for you.
Batwoman by Dick Giordano
Kathy Kate was a circus stunt-cyclist and trapeze artist. She later became a socialite and owner of a circus.
A longtime admirer of Batman, Kathy decided to become a costumed crimefighter after she received a considerable inheritance.
She had a mansion constructed atop an abandoned mine tunnel and built her own version of the Batcave.
Often partnered up with Batman and Robin
Kathy’s own niece, Betty, developed her own costumed identity as Bat-Girl
Katy had counterparts on Earth-One and Earth-Two – their careers were mainly identical except for the endings
On Earth-Two, Kathy retired and remained a prominent citizen of Earth-One
On Earth-One, Kathy retired and bought a small circus to keep herself occupied
She was later murdered by the Bronze Tiger in a struggle between Ra’s Al Ghul and the League of Assassins
Kathy Kane is one of my all-time favorite characters and my 2nd favorite love interest of Batman (Andrea Beaumont is my number one Batman love interest).  Was she a silly character? Yes, in her late Golden Age/Silver Age appearances but it was a rather overall silly time for DC Comics. She is the first heroic female Bat character as she debuted in the 1950s and Barbara Gordon wouldn’t debut until the late 1960s. Loved her rare Bronze Age appearances. After Kathy’s death, her time as Batwoman was erased in the post-Crisis but Bette kept her role as a costumed adventurer as Flamebird. Kathy -as Batwoman – made an appearance in one of the Kingdom one shots. Batman sees Batwoman and says “Kathy?” so he retained some memories of her costumed identity.
As for Kathy’s death…she was essentially stuffed into the fridge.  In Detective Comics #485, Batman visits Kathy’s circus and helps her fend off attackers. A second wave of attacks separates the duo and Batman later finds a deceased Kathy clutching her Batwoman costume. Ra’s Al Ghul arrives at the circus and informs Batman that Kathy was killed by the order of the Sensei of the League of Assassins and that Ra’s was the one who sent the note warning Batman of Kathy’s upcoming assassination. Batman questions why the Sensei would consider Kathy a threat and Ra’s tells Batman it is because he told the Sensei that Kathy was a threat. The Bronze Tiger is implicated to be Kathy’s murderer.
We don’t receive a reason for why Ra’s went out of his way to have Kathy assassinated. The only reason I can head-cannon relates to Ra’s obsession to have Bruce as an heir. Around this time there were four main love interests of Bruce: Selina, Talia, Kathy, and Silver St Cloud. Was Ra’s eliminating a possible romantic rival of Talia?
The aftermath of Kathy’s murder received some attention in the Ostrander’s Suicide Squad series – mainly in Bronze Tiger’s attempts to break the League’s brainwashing and his attempts to remember if he killed Kathy.
Kathy frequently married Bruce and was the mother of his son in “imaginary stories” (Elseworlds) from the Golden/Silver Age.
I was so excited when Batwoman was rumored to return in the 52 serie and was so disappointed when it wasn’t Kathy. (Not that I don’t like Kate, I simply wanted the return of Kathy).
Grant Morrison brought Kathy/Batwoman back during his run on the Batman titles and she also featured in the Grayson series. I don’t know if she’s made appearances since the Rebirth era but I’m always up for more Kathy.
