STRENGTH TRAINING!!!!
Exercise is all about Muscle fibre recruitment (MFR). More the number of muscle fibres you put to work, higher fat burning is what you get. E.g. squats recruit more muscle fibres than crunches.
Factors influencing MFR:
a) Choice of exercise - Strength training recruits max muscle fibres
b) Duration- Not more than 60 mins
c) Sequence- Work the big muscles before small muscles
d) Frequency- Overtraining and ignoring rest compromises on MFR and exposes you to injury
And why you must squat?
- Builds bone density
- Prevents thighs from bulging out from sides of your jeans
- Helps beat PMS mood swings and menstrual cramps
- Improves insulin sensitivity and will helps you beat Diabetes, PCOD and Obesity
- Boosts sleep quality
- Ensures that you don’t crack under pressure in real life
A quick lesson in exercise physiology:
Too often we have been told to reduce weight be it to look better, lower Diabetes, BP or simply to get married.
But we have been told the wrong stuff.
If you would really want to look better, have well controlled blood sugar and BP levels then what you should be doing is working on improving your strength to weight ratio.
Essentially you should gear your training and eating in a way that allows your muscles to hypertrophy (become big) and bones to become dense (heavy).
When this happens, in lay terms we call it a toned body. A toned body means that you look slim but not sick.
To cut a long story short, if you are fuming in the gym, you will be smiling outside it. Train hard, stay strong, shut that weight loss machine in your head.

I already do cardio/ swimming/ zumba/ dancing, etc., should I strength train?
Yes. And the reason is After burn -
Excessive Post exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) or 'After burn' is a process that follows every session of strength training, where the body burns fat at a higher rate for upto 36-48 hrs. This is not the case with aerobic exercises where fat burn, if at all, happens only during the duration of exercise.
This is especially helpful for the obese or those suffering from hormonal imbalances due to excessive body fat.
Is there an alternative to gym that we can do at home?
Two scenarios –
1. You have access but don’t want to go to gym because you are apprehensive/ shy/ don’t have time/ it’s too loud/ it’s for body builders only/ etc.
The benefits of weight training outweigh all of the above concerns. Working out in gym is the safest way to weight train as you can use machines and light weights (lighter than body weight) to train with a proper form. 2. You don’t have access to a gym at all.
In that case, you can learn some basic strengthening exercises that use minimum or no equipment.

P.S : Exercise physiology is not mainstream not because it is complicated but because it focuses on people and not profit. Weight loss sells easily and keeps you a consumer for life. Health on the other hand, makes poor business sense.
