So I saw the Prom this weekend. Great musical, highly recommend. Anyway, there are a few songs that get talked about a lot like "Just Breathe" which you may recognize from the line "Note to self, don't be gay in Indiana." "Love Thy Neighbor" is in my opinion, the most talked about song because it's absolutely SCATHING. Seriously, Google it. It's essentially a massive "fuck you" to conservative Christians in the form of campy musical theater.
However, there's a song on the track that I think deserves so much more discussion and that is "Barry Is Going to Prom." Yeah, you read that right. The comic relief song about the middleaged gay man attending a highschool prom.
"Barry Is Going to Prom" explores a piece of queer existence that is never really talked about: the bittersweet feeling a lot of older queer people get when looking at the younger generations. One one hand, they're so ecstatic that things are different for us. On the other, there's a not insignificant amount of jealousy. The concept of prom is one of those things that generates this feeling (and not just in older queers; younger people who attended prom while dating someone they didn't love, or who were unable to bring their significant other due to societal pressure, or who attended prom as the wrong gender feel this too).
"Barry Is Going to Prom" is devastatingly sad when you look just below the surface of "haha old man going to prom" and understand that feeling. Barry sings about how he had his tux picked out and the limo rented for his own high school prom... and then he didn't go. We never actually find out why Barry didn't go, but that's not really the point. He even says in the opening lines of the song that going to prom shouldn't matter. And yet it matters so, so much. And then, he talks about calling his mother and telling her he's going to prom despite the fact that he has been no contact with his mother for over a decade due to her rejection of his homosexuality.
It's such a good song and I feel like it really captures the way a lot of queer adults feel about prom (the event, the musical, and the true story the musical is based on). It was easily my favorite song on the track.

Yeah….
This was to 911 on fox what legend of the sword was to Aladdin 2019. An ugly and bitter disappointment to me. It was a waste of Corden and Streep’s talents. It was 133 minutes of my life I’m never going to get back. And I’m definitely going need a pallet cleanser now it’s finished.

Tickletober Day 6: Cuddles
Fandom: The Prom; Emma & Alyssa
Word Count: 692
“Mm, you’re nice to lay on.”
“You’re nice to be laid on by.”
Alyssa Greene sat up suddenly, leaving the warmth of her girlfriend’s chest and exchanging her previously relaxed smile for a playful grin, eyes narrowed. “Did you just end your sentence with a preposition?”
Emma Nolan gasped out a laugh, reacting even before the mischievous fingers met her clothed sides, making her shriek in surprise and then giggle even harder.
“Alyssa, please-” she begged, hair thrown around her forehead in a dirty blonde ring, shirt already rucked up below her ribcage as her partner’s fingers crept closer to her navel. “No-”
“Just breathe, Emma,” Alyssa cooed, grinning even wider, dark hair falling from its updo the more she struggled with the squirming girl beneath her, manicured nails doing the work of the devil. She knew how quick to jump to pleading the other was all too well, and it was a constant joke between them during moments like these.
Trust and believe, in all their time alone, the student council president had learned what meant ‘stop’ and what was just the beautifully paradoxical asking for more.
“I’m gohoing to dihie-” Emma cackled, Alyssa’s deft hands clawing now at her lowest ribs, legs flailing against the mattress and nearly knocking off the acoustic guitar precariously perched at the end of the bed.
“You’re not going to die, I’d never be that mean.”
“Mehe-agh, mean enough!” With a great effort, Emma sat up and jerked her arms towards Alyssa’s outstretched underarms, prompting a shriek from the other as she finally gained the upper hand, fingers drilling into the hollows in the way she knew was maddening. “Take that!”
“Ehehe-Emma, no, not there!” Alyssa pleaded, giggling so hard she started to hiccup and torn between continuing her previous attack and for the love of God, clamping her arms down to her sides to hopefully lessen the electric feeling she felt immobilizing her by the second.
“Alyssa Greene, more like Alyssa Lee-ne,” Emma smirked, using the last of her conserved energy she would’ve used for thrashing in the same situation to jolt forward and throw her girlfriend backwards onto the queen mattress, laughing right along with her while she watched her cheeks burn with a pink blush at her words.
Yes, Alyssa Greene had a tickling blog. Her girlfriend had a YouTube channel dedicated to her singing, and as far as activities went, she didn’t quite think pages of content surrounding her volunteer work would be as reblog-worthy as talking about how much she wished to be pinned to a soft surface and made to beg for mercy with just a few gentle touches; sue her.
The downside was that after she’d confessed her interest in tickling to her girlfriend, Emma became hellbent on finding the treasure trove of information - and once she had, there was no chance in escaping revenge should Alyssa have struck first.
And she struck first, often. Almost as if–
“C’mon, don’t pretend you don’t like this.” Emma grinned down at Alyssa pinned beneath her, both of their cheeks flushed from both the embarrassment and the proximity to each other once again. Alyssa’s eyes darted to the posters on Emma’s walls, the music notes haphazardly painted on a staff above the bed - anywhere but to return the gaze as her ears brightened.
“I-”
“Okay,” Emma laughed, nodding before rolling to the side and tugging the other girl into her chest again, hand tangling in her hair as she gazed out the window. The rays of fading sunlight brushed color through Alyssa’s hair. “You don’t have to answer-”
“You know I do,” Alyssa managed, grinning shyly, “But it’s not like I can help it. It just happened.”
“I understand completely. Sometimes things just happen.”
“Are we ‘things’?”
Emma’s heart thudded against her ribcage hard, but it was almost comfortable. Familiar. Butterflies swarmed in her stomach, and she couldn’t hold back another laugh. After the fiasco with Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman - you could almost say all of Broadway - only a few short months ago, they’d done anything but just happen, but still she found herself nodding.
Believing they could.
“Absolutely.”

Alyssa Greene is her high school’s it girl - popular, head of the student council, and daughter of the PTA president. She also has a secret: she’s been dating Emma for the last year and a half. When word gets out that Emma plans to bring a girl as her date, it stirs a community-wide uproar that spirals out of control. Now, the PTA - led by Alyssa’s mother - is threatening to cancel the prom altogether. Enter Barry Glickman and Dee Dee Allen, two Broadway has-beens who see Emma’s story as the perfect opportunity to restore their place in the limelight...but when they arrive in Indiana to fight on Emma’s behalf, their good intentions go quickly south. Between Emma facing the fray head-on, Alyssa wavering about coming out, and Barry and Dee Dee basking in all the attention, it’s the perfect prom storm. Only when this unlikely group comes together do they realise that love is always worth fighting for.

The Prom at the Ahmanson Theatre:
Tumblr media
I was kind of expecting some audience members to be dressed in prom-wear, but there were also a few kids walking around wearing Hogwarts robes (???).
The orchestra section was astonishingly empty five minutes before the scheduled show time. Part of that was likely due to the usual downtown traffic (and it did fill in somewhat), but even in the lobby and plaza area it seemed unusually empty.
Nevertheless the audience was having a great time. There was more laughter than in any show I’ve been to recently, and I think it’s the funniest musical or play I’ve seen in the last few years – or at least the one that lands closest to my sense of humor.
Tumblr media
All of the adult characters were played rather broadly, which was a slightly different approach than what I recall from the film or the Broadway versions where most of the Indiana crowd were a little less flamboyant. I wonder if it’s a natural consequence of touring in giant theaters, but the outsized performances fit pretty naturally for Barry and Dee Dee, slightly less so for others.
Really liked Courtney Balan as Dee Dee Allen, who was very entertainingly self-absorbed (”It’s Not About Me” was my favorite song of the evening).
Kaden Kearney was very good in “Just Breathe,” though the sense of anxiety and vulnerabilty in that song carried through the entire show and sometimes Emma seemed withdrawn to the point where I wondered how she and Alyssa managed to get to know each other.
Act I seemed to go by very quickly. Maybe I’m too familiar with the beats of the show now, but I liked everything a little bit more than I used to.
“Zazz”: very funny.  The cast album captures some of the humor, but there is really worth it to see the live stage performances in this and other songs.
Trent’s songs are really livened up by the presence of the Non-Equity cast of Godspell.
The line delivery (and audience reaction) that surprised me most: “We are liberal Democrats from Broadway!” Huge reaction and it’s not even the funniest part of that scene.
There is a James Madison High School hockey bro who really needs to retape his stick.
Just like Barry Glickman, The Prom flaunts its one-time Drama Desk-winning status at whatever two-bit place it ends up staying at on the road:
Tumblr media
Overall: funnier than I remember, still great fun to watch. Will try to see it again before it leaves town.
