I realized on December 30th that 2023 would be the first year since I started birding in which I saw ZERO lifers.
Remedied that by driving to New Jersey on December 31st to see the long-staying Red-flanked Bluetail.
The little sweetums (trust me)
Then I thought, fuck it, I'm already in New Jersey, might as well hit Barnegat Light
If you've never been, it offers SPECTACULAR looks at winter waterfowl like Harlequin Duck, Long-tailed Duck, all three scoter species, occasional eiders, Red-throated Loon, Red-breasted Merganser, etc. All incredibly close to the jetty you walk out on. Purple Sandpiper and Ruddy Turnstone are practically underfoot.

keep the inner Light burning
(keep it Alive)
in True illumination.
will you find and befriend my heart as i wait at the patient shoreline of these eyes?
(in a calm state of twin-engine evergreen)
i’ll keep waiting (silently, bravely) by writing in (the inner space) of A pure Winter’s dream
inviting to “come out” of the world and its identity and simultaneously to “come in” by following the path of the paper snow into the very heart of a book as a first meeting place
(in thought before in body)
someone will even take these words to heart (to be written upon the inner pages) and speak of them as well as i keep silent in the writing… (just like A True gentle moon)

Moonrise behind the Barnegat Lighthouse - My first ever telephoto Moonrise image. I've wanted to head out for a photo like this for a while now, but for a number of reasons, it just hasn't happened. Since I had a chance to check out the new SIGMA 500mm f5.6 DG DN OS | S, I figured no better time than now. I'll share more about the lens in my stories over the next few days, but wow, what an awesome lens.
I was set up about 4.5 miles from the lighthouse and I was worried the clouds on the horizon would completely block my view. The moon ended up peaking out just as it was passing behind the lighthouse. In the end, I think the way they were lit up made this a much more interesting shot.
It's not perfect, but it was a lot of fun and I can't wait to head back out.
