I am unaware, but curious. Why is Barbara Goenaga problematic?
Anon #2: Do tell about your beef Barbara Goenaga.. we want to know the tea
Okay... First, meet Basque actress Barbara Goenaga:
She started acting since she was a child, and most of her career in the Basque Country was in Euskara-speaking productions. By the early 00s she was kinda the unofficial Basque bombshell: we know loooooots of men that considered her super pretty and sexy.
Why do we - and many more people - have personal issues with her? She's in a serious relationship with a former PP politician - former since 2020, mind you.
You know, Euskadi is tiny, and eventually everyone knows somebody that knows another somebody. We have friends that have common friends with her, so yeah, this comes from a friend of a friend, but bear with us. We were told Goenaga's family had gudaris (Basque soldiers) killed in the Spanish Civil War, and are in the nationalist orbit, Barbara herself identifying as euskaltzale or enthusiast of Basque culture and language. When she started dating her boyfriend, there were a few troubles and arguments, which we totally can understand.
Okay, we don't want to derail this. Our personal issue is not whom she dates per se. The issue is that if you date somebody that belongs - and we presume is ok with - a political party that voted against gay marriage and abortion, is known not to care one bit about Basques and Euskera, disregards Basque prisoners and their families' rights and is the most corrupt party in Europe that have stolen millions from the Spanish tax payers' money, you have to accept that people will roll their eyes if you say you're feminist and euskaltzale. She left Twitter after a user called her out on this, and she said she was leaving because she was fed up with being judged by her partner. No honey, the thing is that your words are hard to believe due to your acts.
[We won't even comment much on her previous boyfriend, actor Oscar Jaenada, who is a complete ass on our book. Dating an idiot is a mistake, dating two is a pattern, but that's our irrelevant opinion.]
She says their love is above politics or disagreements and that they don't talk about politics. But he was a politician until 2020. Girl, it was his job. What did you talk about when he came back home? They didn't discuss politics? That must be the only household in Euskadi.
Yes, we understand that you can love a person with different ideas. Yes, you can disagree on economy, or immigration, or education. But if the other person is on the side of the oppressors and you are a proud member of a minority.... We couldn't.
When your partner belongs to a very conservative party founded by a Francoist, knows it, knows what those ideas have meant for Euskadi, knows you had family members killed by fascists!, and keeps in said party years AFTER meeting you, who consider yourself a Basque supporter and feminist... Well, she clearly didn't influence him one bit but remained by his side, so we think she isn't bothered whatsoever by her man's ideas, and THAT'S our issue.
Phew, that was long, sorry!

EIFF 2016: Pikadero (2015)
EIFF 2016: Pikadero (2015)
Pikadero isn’t a bad movie. It’s just not a very good one. And it also seems to be a bit confused as to what it actually wants to be. Take the central premise, where the title of the film comes from. A pikadero is, apparently, a public place used for sexual encounters. And this is what Gorka, played by Joseba Usabiaga, and Ane, played by Barbara Goenaga, are seeking. They are meeting up again,…
