a trio of banded net-winged beetles (Calopteron reticulatum or C. discrepans) engaged in some sort of indescribable debauchery
net-winged beetles (Lycidae) are one of several families closely related to fireflies, but while most members of this group are carnivorous as larvae, those of lycids feed on slime molds and fungi.

Another bug I almost thought was something else! This may kind of resemble a moth with its soft looking wings and distinct antennae but it's actually an end band net-wing beetle!

what is this? a butterfly? wasp? fly? I thought it was a moth but turns out this is an end band net-winged beetle.
beetles are the single largest order on earth. they make up 25% of all animal species. so like you’d think they’re insanely diverse. this one looks almost nothing like a beetle with those elytra (top armored wing pair).
this net-winged beetle is foul-tasting and toxic to predators, but it shouldn’t cause any harm to people.

@dadsniper submitted: Saw this really cool dude chilling on my memere's cover for her grill! Really cool texture on the wings though I don't know if my phone camera picked that up. Who is this noble guy? I'm up in Maine!
Ah, a beautiful friend! You can definitely see the detail on the elytra. It’s an end band net-winged beetle!

End Band Net-wing Beetle
...No, this is not a hastily executed sketch of a End Band Net-wing Beetle.  It is an actual beetle.
How to catch One:  Spot it flying.  Saunter to a point intended to intercept its flight path.  Lift your hand slowly so as to block its progress.  Watch as it lands on your fingertip and stands there in befuddlement.

[PHOTO TAKEN: MAY 30TH, 2023 | Image ID: A black-and-yellow lichen moth, a black moth with yellow/orange markings on its wings, on a dirty white metal surface /End ID.]
I almost had this guy (Lycomorpha pholus) confused for an end band net-wing beetle (Calopteron terminale)! Which makes sense, given they're thought to mimic lycid beetles-

I'm feeling angst, so maybe we can have some Bat!Bessie getting jumped by anti-Vesper avians?
The pain in Bessie’s head was almost as bad as the pain in Bessie’s wings. She didn’t know which was worse: the hate-filled screaming in her mind or the claws cleaving off her flesh.
There were three of them in total: A dark-eyed junco Avem, a banded net-winged beetle, and a Hydra with goldenrod yellow and russet red wings. It was almost perfectly coincidental that it was all the other tribes doing this to her, but that was probably what they were going for.
Boiling orange acid was spat onto Bessie’s wings, burning through the flesh as if it were just delicate paper. She worried that there would be holes left behind and she would never be able to fly again.
Her dewclaws were smashed beneath feet, her tail was stomped on, the fur on her stomach was blistered by freezing cold frostbreath, and she was scratched all over by razor sharp claws. She tried to struggle, but they held her down, and it hurt too much to move around anyway. All she could do was shield her head with her wings, curl into a ball, and cry.
