Recently, U and I have been having such casual conversations, and he has been super comfortable around me. He’ll let out his occasional snide remarks and, though he hesitated just a little bit the first time around, he’ll curse freely around me.

There’s just something about him and I chatting so normally that feels so right.

This all had started when I walked into his office to have a serious conversation with him a few days ago. He had dropped everything and stared me dead in the eye the whole time (making me quite nervous), his lips pursed and his posture relaxed in his chair, taking in every bit of feedback I had for him, then communicating clearly to me in a fashion that told me that he completely got where I was coming from, but he also wanted to be straightforward with me about his motives and what he was planning to do going forward.

He spoke calmly and clearly and never once strayed from my gaze, aside from when he needed to make adjustments on something he was working on. I offered to help but he responded it wasn’t something I’d need to work on, as it was just “scheduling and shit.”

As I waited for him to get what he needed done, he’d mutter the occasional profanity under his breath upon reaching a new conflict, and all I could do was smile lightly and look at him, admiring how hard of a worker he was being, then avert my gaze to the floor and mirror in the room until he was done.

And after that, I had been spending some time helping out at a competition and he walked up to me to start a conversation there, too. We talked about many things, conveyed many emotions, and had great laughs the whole way through. ❤️

There’s nothing quite like having a good conversation with someone you admire. Especially someone with great character… and a ton of endearing comments and stories to share. He’s so lovely. I love him dearly. I hope I can get more time alone with him in the near future as well.

I got some time with M as well. He’s been nice to chat casually with as well, but as grateful as I am for that, but I’ve been connecting more personally with U recently. I hope he feels it too.

The Bolshoi - "Away"

The Bolshoi were an English London-based music group prominent mostly in the mid to late 1980s. They are best known for the hits "Sunday Morning" and "A way" or "Away" (the name is interchangeable and has been noted as both on different albums/singles).

The band formed in 1984 in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England. The original lineup consisted of singer/guitarist Trevor Tanner, drummer Jan Kalicki, and bassist Graham Cox. Tanner and Kalicki had previously played together in the short-lived punk band Moskow, where Trevor performed as Trevor Flynn (his mother's maiden name). Early gigs supported the likes of the Cult, the March Violets and the Lords of the New Church. After eight gigs bass player Graham Cox was replaced by Nick Chown. In 1985, the band released their debut single, "Sob Story", followed by the mini-album, Giants, and their hit song "Happy Boy". Word of mouth was such that the Bolshoi were able to sell out many of their early headlining performances.

The band moved to London in 1985, and their line-up expanded to include Paul Clark on keyboards (born 12 June 1962, Leeds, Yorkshire). In 1986, they released their first full-length album, Friends, and expanded their touring schedule to the U.S., South America and Poland. It was followed in 1987 by the album Lindy's Party, on which the sound was more pop-oriented. TC Wall, reviewing the album in Underground magazine, described Lindy's Party as "completely confident, commercial, professional, and dangerously catchy" and "a fine album that'll be caressed for generations."

Stylistically, the Bolshoi were difficult to categorize. The band has been described as a proto-goth band, similar in their live act to fellow Beggars Banquet signees, Bauhaus. Tanner was recognized for his dark, pensive lyrics that belied a social responsibility and awareness.

After the release of Lindy's Party, the band recorded a fourth album, but problems with their record label management impeded its release, and they disbanded as the 1980s drew to a close. The previously unreleased fourth album, titled Country Life, had been lost for years, but has now been resurrected by Beggars Banquet with extensive help from Tanner's current record label-head and Creative Director, David Paul Wyatt Perko. This new release is now available as one of five CDs in Beggar's 5-CD box set, put out via Beggar's imprint, Arkive.

In December 2018, the Bolshoi's official Facebook page announced that Bolshoi frontman, Trevor Tanner, and Bolshoi keyboardist, Paul Clark, were developing a new project, tentatively titled, The Bolshoi Brothers.

i haven’t had a crush on ANYONE in like 7 yrs

I’ve been in a shitty toxic relationship for 6 of those yrs!

He’s not conventionally attractive, he’s just got....something. He’s funny. He’s so fucking talented. He laughs at the same stupid shit I do.

But...it’s so so intense and I can’t risk his job or my uhhh life? He really keeps finding reasons to hang out with me and I’m just gonna CRY because I know it’s wrong, I know with the power balance issue (esp with me in like 5 of his classes) it would never ever work...but the energy keeps building up every time we do cello lessons or band or even fuckin theory....we both love music so much and it’s part of us, so we like each other. 

And before yall lose ur shit and think I’m a weird creep, I’m 24 goddamn years old, I’m in college, I DON”T WANT TO FUCK HIM IRL WHATSOEVER, and he is a prof in my major spending as much time with me as he does because of class! The only time we’ve ever interacted outside of school has been for concerts! Like orchestra concerts! Do we flirt like stupid kids?? MAYBE. Do we act on it? HELL THE FUCK NAH

Now allow me to wax poetic;

He’s so tall, like 6′4″, and I can’t tell what his bod looks like whatsoever bc he’s always wearing 3 piece suits (with converse ovo) but he hair pierced ears with lil tiny hoops and he doesn’t look like a model or whatever at ALL, everyone I talk to about this get so confused, but it’s not because of his looks.......the shit this guy can do with music. Piano, guitar, cello, voice, my good goddamn. He composes, he conducts......he has my dream job! Literally that’s what I wanna do with my life! He’s like a perfect mentor. 

He gives me extra work (not for extra credit blep) because the curriculum doesn’t challenge me v much in theory, and every time he checks it and it’s all right, he lights the fuck up and tells me how impressed he is. And in cello lessons, he has to correct my hands and every time he touches me I just explode. 

What kills me.......is that he likes me. In some regard. I don’t care if he doesn’t want to ~be with me~ or whatever, he likes me and enjoys my company and likes teaching me and that is more than enough.

I love that U gives me so much attention. I’m always one of the people he looks at most during his discussions, sometimes when he’s not even talking to me. He’s always joking around and watching me laugh, and smiling when I crack a smile, and teasing me a little bit when I do something dumb.

Even when he’s chatting with someone else and he or that person makes a joke, I will see him looking in my direction. Whether it’s subconscious or he wants to see if I see him all happy, because he probably knows his smile makes my day, I can’t help but love it every time.

He’s so patient and gentle with me as well. He always uses my name when he’s speaking to me, and he is so polite. He is seriously such a sweetheart, and I am really looking forward to getting more time with him in the future, especially one-on-one, if the universe allows it.

Resident photographer for Under the Cherry Moon

Shot first couple of days on set of Under the Cherry Moon. The cover was captured within 5 minutes of the beginning of the photoshoot.

They’d never shoot with a purpose, it was usually shot for the moment and it was applied it later.

The look Prince wanted to achieve for the film was met with resistance by the film company. Jeff had taken a Polaroid. P held up said Polaroid and said “this is what I want my movie to look like”

One year later he was dressed like this.

Paisley Park wasn’t done yet this was shot at a warehouse on Flying Cloud in Eden Prairie. 

The background was from Chanhassen Dinner theatre, the set of “Guys and Dolls”. 

He used a 16 second exposure for this and asked Prince to stay still for as long...P walked away after 8 that’s why he’s transparent.

Didn’t talk much, mostly used non-verbal communication.

Question : How much did his music influence images? Answer : Pics never synced with music, again they were matched to the music after.

After SOTT era, he came back and Prince looked like this. This was shot at Paisley.

P:  “I’m gonna go home and come back in a few hours.” Jeff took a nap at the studio.

And P returned looking like this :

These last two pictures were part of a 36 hour photoshoot.

P : Have you ever seen Barbarella? Jeff : Yes P : That’s what I want this to look like

Looking into the possibility of doing a book “We want him represented in the best ways possible” (Wasn’t a promising option at the time by how they were talking about it despite the loud cheers of encouragement from the crowd)

There was an alternate version of this image of P sitting up looking straight into the camera. It was in black and white. There was an audible gasp from the crowd. (Edited to add said photo)

Jeff : Done in Stockholm in a tiny studio. “Let the intensity come from the person and their eyes”

Prince : “Shoot some details”

Gilbert was prince’s trainer, joked that he’d look like this after one day of working out.

His last shoot with P.

P wanted cityscapes, but didn’t want want to be in the city so Steve found some backdrops to use instead.

Gilbert : Why are you so silent about your work? “I like photo sessions. I like shooting...not so much editing...when the session is done, I move on.

Gilbert : What advice do you have for aspiring photographers?

Jeff : You have to have an image with stopping power...see something differently than how someone else is seeing it.”

Note : There were several unseen images included as part of this presentation that are not on this site. A book would be wonderful to have!

Ran into P at a club. Rode out to Paisley. Began friendship.

That winter recorded tracks, collabed with Prince. She’d read her poetry while he played different instruments to go with it on the fly.

Later in a band called Skyfish. She got the tape to Prince. P filled her apartment up with white flowers. Called and played her Heaven Must Be Near. She did a music video for it. Craig shot it and Prince edited it.

Craig 

Prince sent Craig to go meet Ingrid “I want you to meet this women” Craig “Oh yeah okay...🙄”. Was impressed by Ingrid “She’s an artist...a real artist Prince you have to respect her as one.”

Were looking to cast the role of the angel, Craig said Ingrid was it. 

Craig and TC were the only ones to hear Ingrid Justify My Love as a demo before Madonna covered it.

Craig GB was to be connected to Purple Rain, but was not to be grounded in reality.

Steve : Started painting for prospective art directors. Didn't know GB was on the way. Levi shared a version of it it with Prince. Steve was told that it was on Prince’s desk, “and he looks at it every day”. P asked for changes (Put Jill Jones’s face on Cindy Crawford’s body, etc.) he used sandpaper to make the changes.

They built seven corners in the Paisley Park soundstage. There were roads, buildings, streetlamps.. Prince: “Oh my god can we keep it?”

All of the old school cats we grew up with were in this. “I could feel the tension but it was all love”

“Had the feeling of the whole neighborhood together making Graffiti Bridge”

Terry and Jimmy held more weight now with their success, Ingrid was a bit of an outsider as even the extras were from the old neighborhood.

Ingrid hung out by herself a lot or with the members of The Time

P wanted everyone one set even if they weren’t filming.

Q&A Q :Why was the name of the movie changed to Graffiti Bridge? A : There was a bridge in Chanhassen called “Graffiti Bridge”, “May U Live to See the Dawn” was too long and didn’t sound like a film title. 7 Corners was too native to the Twin Cities

Also Prince wrote the script, they brought in a script writer to help him with it later...and he re-wrote it...then proceeded to ignore it.

Q : How was the movie received? A: It made money, but people really just wanted “Purple Rain 2″. They did a screening of the movie in Harlem and it didn’t go well. That was hard on Prince. 

Not about the music, it’s the community and bringing everyone together. 

Ingrid never watched the movie until Mothers’ Day 2018. Felt it wasn’t as bad she remembered.  

Q : Why didn’t you use the real Graffiti Bridge? A : Prince wanted to shoot the movie in winter...in Minnesota. Enough issues when they did Purple Rain during the cold Minnesota months.

Other side note : After the screenings, Prince’s confidence about GB started wavering. He didn’t promote it much.

Q : Why was Question of U cut from the movie? A : Running time. It would be in a special edition, but it didn’t make enough money for WB to support one.

Q : What does “May u live to see the dawn” mean? A : “Sometimes he would just say things and you’re just like ‘okay’”. (Nobody knew)

Q : Can you touch on the Still Would Stand All Time scene? A : It was shot at the club, not Paisley. Their Favorite Parts :  Ingrid : Love Machine scene because it was out of character for her TC Ellis : The rap...and then he rapped about the Paisley associated Minneapolis Black Music scene up until about the GB time (which was amazing by the way I hope he transcribes it and posts it somewhere! It had song and album titles and everything!)

And that was it for today for the sessions at Paisley! Big Screen was also tonight which unfortunately was the same show as last year, but still a good show nonetheless. Last year was slight shock/jam...this year for me was wayment...oh...okay whatever still Prince...and for some reason was way more emotional for me this year? Probably a personal thing though.) Day 3 tomorrow!

10: How many TCs do you have/have you had? Which is/has been the most ~real~? Do you expect you’ll get any more TCs?

i currently have two, which are M and F. M definitely feels more real, because i’ve been crushing on him for two years now. F is pretty great, but i’ve only been talking to him for a little bit. it’s mostly platonic and i’m happy about that. I kind of don’t want to have another TC because i’m going to have M until i graduate. I like focusing on him.

13: Is your TC a good singer? Do you have any songs that you’d wish they’d sing to you?

M is such a good singer. since he is a band director, he sings our part sometimes, and it’s so pretty. he also helped us sing silent night for our christmas concert and my heart was in awe. i feel if he sang to be so lonely by harry styles, bro my heart would be complete. my favorite song and my two favorite men.

also, thank you for asking, it made me very happy❤️❤️

How I met you, P.

It's my senior year, all three band directors left us. And you come in as the new head band director, jeez. When I first met you it was the end of my junior year after the first two band directors left us, you greeted us all and shook my hand.

If I knew I was going to fall for you I would've held your hand longer. Like,,,, what the hell. It's not like me to like an older man, no way. But you????? You're like a kid trapped in a man's body. You also know when to be mature, which side note is very attractive.

Then I didn't pay you much attention during summer band camp, you didn't either. I remember the first home game after the band went back to our hall. We locked eyes for what seemed like an eternity and boom. I've fallen.

It was weird, but then you made it worse.

You called me in to check on me? Me. Of all people. That night I was going to kill myself, well I thought about it. We talked for an hour and we were like equals, like two friends sharing a coffee date. You were just like me in middle school, struggling with the same problems. I fell right off of the drum major podium, really hard for you.

You said it yourself, you only know the senior version of me. I only have you for a year, and I don't know how I'll deal with it. One year with you. P, I don't know what to do. You say to check with you often but I'm a mess.
