bagginshield | band/bookshop au | explicit
Thorin Durinul has always dreamed of making it to the big leagues in the music industry. Ered Luin’s newest citizen, Bilbo Baggins, an aspiring writer and all-around bookworm, has recently taken ownership of the mountain town’s dusty old corner shop, now, Bag End Books. They weren’t looking for love, but now they can’t imagine tackling life’s challenges without each other.

“Say, Bilbo? When we spoke to Gandalf once, he said your birthday was near. Did we miss it?” Ori asked as he helped Bilbo put his books away.
The Hobbit furrowed his eyebrows. “Not for another three days. Why?”
”I was just curious.”
Bilbo paused a moment. “Are you … planning something?”
“No, not at all. I was just … wondering.”
He raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Ori, I appreciate the sentiment, but everyone has been very busy. It’s just a birthday, after all.”
“How old are you turning?”
“Fifty.”
Ori’s face drained of color. “I-you, what?”
Bilbo furrowed his eyebrows. “I’m forty-nine.”
“I-I realize.”
“Is fifty significant for dwarves?”
“It’s when we mature.”
Bilbo cracked a smile and chuckled. “Well Hobbits mature at thirty-three. I’m no child, Ori.”
Ori returned the smile. “I-yes. Certainly not.”

“Put your arms through,” Thorin practically ordered, and Bilbo did as he was bid, at once feeling swamped by the heavy garb.
“Oh!” he cried suddenly, looking down at how the hem was touching the floor. “It’ll get dirty!”
“Hush,” Thorin flashed a tiny smile at him, now taking Bilbo’s hands in both of his own and warming them. “Fussy hobbit.”
“Stubborn dwarf,” Bilbo grumbled in response, though with a fondness he simply couldn’t contain these days. Thorin made no reply to this and continued to slowly rub his fingers to thaw them.

ok, but what about some bagginshield?
When the dwarves were captured, Bilbo was not able to remain composed. Would they be harmed? Would they be mistreated? Would their weapons be left or taken so that the prisoners couldn’t even think of escape? And what if someone is hurt and needs urgent help? Bilbo had no idea how elves treated their prisoners, but he was sure that nobody in his company wanted to experience it.
A group of armed dwarves, led by their king, imprisoned in an elven dungeon and awaiting judgment, isn’t it just wonderful? Warring races always try to put a spoke in one another’s wheel, and when a bunch of armed shorties falls into the hands of the forest elves, it is naive to believe they will be released without a proper investigation. They are not in RIvendell, there are no friendly elves. There are only forest keepers fighting anyone who dares to disturb their peace.
Bilbo uses his ring once again, becoming completely invisible to the guards. He is aware of how sharp all the elves’ senses are, but he crosses his fingers and tiptoes past two guardians who are cracking jokes and laughing out loud. He is almost caught by a tall elf in white clothes (is he someone important? or maybe he’s even an elven prince? the hobbit does not know him and he is not particularly interested in making acquaintances with anyone right now), who is reprimanding one of the female warriors accompanying the dwarves before. Bilbo has no idea what they are talking about, but he is ready to swear that they are not discussing anything good.
The keys are stolen (The hobbit starts to understand what the dwarves were talking about; he really is a skilled burglar), and Bilbo makes his way to the prison cells. He hears how dwarves are getting angry, discussing how they would punish all these nasty forest creatures for imprisoning them, and he can finally take off his ring. Asking his companions to remain quiet, so as not to be noticed, he takes the keys out of his pocket and pushes them through the bars. Some of the dwarves are sitting here together, some alone, but all of them are jumping on their feet and trying to exit the cells as quickly as possible.
When Bilbo approaches Thorin’s cell, he doesn’t even have time to greet the dwarf king. He is pulled by the sleeve so that his face fits neatly between the bars, and he is kissed as if he has just returned from an incredibly long journey. Thorin is holding him by his hand, his other hand touching the soft spot where the neck meets the skull, and the hobbit has no choice but to surrender. He exhales into the kiss, closing his eyes, and relaxes for a few seconds, feeling the warm waves of shivers coming down the spine.
He was worried about all the dwarves who were traveling with him, but especially about their king. He was afraid that, because of his status, Thorin would be treated differently, forced to talk about their journey, or even tortured, but no. Here he is, standing in front of Bilbo, with leaves in his hair, and trying to squeeze the living hell out of him. He was afraid, too, Bilbo thinks, but he will never admit it; he is too proud to be caught caring for this little hobbit with sticky hands.
They break the kiss and Thorin looks at his hobbit as if he has grown a tail in these few hours they were separated. There’s no tail, his ears and feet are the same size they were before, but the dwarf king looks at Bilbo with such attention and even… worry? Of course, he will never say this out loud, but this troubled look on his face speaks louder than words, and so does this sparkle in his eyes, similar to the one occurring right before you start crying.
‘’Thorin, let me open the door please, and then we can hug properly.’’
‘’Finally, you stole something worthy! Well done, little burglar!’’ Thorin steps aside and waits for Bilbo to deal with the lock. Before this adventure, Bilbo would have taken offense at such words, but now? Right now he understands that the moment the door is open, he will be enveloped in a hug so tight, he will hear his bones crack. Thorin can’t show his emotions properly, but the hobbit doesn’t ask him to do so: he knows what the dwarven king feels; he couldn’t doubt him even if he tried.
Tonight, when they manage to get some rest, Thorin will hold him in his arms, cover his face in many kisses, and whisper about how he prayed for his hobbit to be safe while they were imprisoned; but for now, there is a battle awaiting them, and Bilbo hopes that his companions are ready to fight.

Bagginshield Fic Recs!
I've been wanting to do a bagginshield fic recs for a long time now so here are my favorite fics so far for this pairing! I will be adding on new ones as I go ❤
Fix-It AUs :
A Shot in the Dark by Silver_pup — 213.2k words
Summary: When he opens his eyes again, he finds himself in his old bed in his old home in his old body. Is this death? Or a trick of magic? Either way, Bilbo recognizes a second chance when he sees one, and this time his adventure with Thorin is going to go a bit differently.
An Expected Journey by MarieJacquelyn — 294.5k words
Summary:
“I just wish…”
“What do you wish?”
“I wish I could have changed it all.”
For years Bilbo has written about his adventures and told stories about his dealings with dwarves and dragons. To most it seemed like fanciful nonsense but to Bilbo it was all very real. A weight followed him home from his travels, one called regret. Now in his final moments Bilbo has a choice to make – go quietly into death’s embrace or go back again and face all the fear and pain for the chance to make things right?
Of course, change is a fickle thing and not everything can be done again as Bilbo is about to find out. In the end, it may not only be salvation that he’s fighting for.
Discovering Mr Baggins by Eareniel — 94.4k words
Summary: A.K.A. The Quest for Erebor:
The story of a Hobbit, told through the eyes of the dwarves.
Alternate Universes (Canon Divergence):
The Time for Home by Drenagon — 211.8k words
Summary: Bilbo Baggins doesn't fit in in the Shire. He's not a normal hobbit. That doesn't bother him.
Having his warnings ignored? Trying to help those who will not help themselves?
That bothers him.
The Color of Possibility by lindoreda — 17k words
Summary: When Bilbo puts himself between Thorin and Azog's blade, his mithril shirt protecting them both, it isn't long before some dwarves whisper that 'Oakenshield' might not be the best epithet for their king anymore. But for Bilbo, barred from Thorin's sight since the battle, this new epithet only adds to the sting. Spending his days caring for the recovering princes, Bilbo wonders how much more of this he can take, not suspecting his place at the center of a silent divide in the company.
The Nine Lives of Bilbo Baggins by captain (theoddoodisnude) — 15.3k words
Summary: He's not scared, but rather resigned. He doesn't want to die, not when he knows that it will be permanent, but he doesn't regret his actions. He's died many times on this journey; first for his Company, and then for people he could proudly call friends, who then turned into family.
And now Bilbo will die for them again.
For the first time in his life, he will also die for love.
Call You Home by northerntrash — 12k words
Summary: In which the Company are entirely too nosy about matters that are supposed to be a secret, and Bilbo learns that being concerned about propriety is overrated when you could be making friends instead.
The Naming of Hobbits by Margo_Kim — 9.7k words**
Summary: There's a certain point where you can no longer ask someone what their name is. Thorin isn't sure exactly when that point is, but he knows that it's probably some time before the person in question saves your life. On the far side of the Misty Mountains, Thorin realizes that he never quite caught the first part of Mr. Baggins' name, and he finds that it's astonishingly harder to learn than he would have thought. Fili, Kili, and Dwalin are no help whatsoever.
**I literally didn't laugh this hard in a long while. Definitely worth a read! (And another, let's be honest).
Post BotFA AUs:
A Cultural Misunderstanding (series) by Lindzzz — 96k words
Summary: In which Thorin pushes, and Bilbo doesn't know how to handle emotions and finds himself engaged without realizing it.
(A fluffy "everyone lives" marriage AU)
The Riven Crown by BeautifulFiction — 254.3k words
Summary: ‘We may have won the battle, but I fear the war with winter is just beginning.’
The aftermath of war is no laughing matter. Those who died must be honoured, those who are wounded must be healed, and those who remain need food and clothing, peace and sanctuary. With Thorin's life hanging in the balance, it is up to Bilbo and the rest of the Company to rule the rag-tag remnants of Erebor in his place.
Then there is the matter of the gold...
Can Bilbo save both king and kingdom, or is Erebor destined to fall deeper into ruin?
All The Rivers Sound In My Body by pibroch (littleblackdog) — 5.7k words
Summary: As much as he might like to cut a natty figure in a proper waistcoat and trousers with a reasonable inseam, Bilbo knew there were many more important things to bother with at the moment.
Rebuilding an entire dwarven kingdom, for one. And airing out the stink of dragon would be nice as well.
An Unexpected Proposal by Eareniel — 100k words
Summary: As Bilbo sat smoking in his empty hobbit hole, he couldn’t help but wonder – when did his life become so boring? Or better yet – when did his old life stop being enough?
He suspected the answer to that question lay somewhere around the time when he had refused Thorin Oakenshield’s offer of marriage.
Mother-Tongue by northerntrash — 24.9k words
Summary: Forget-me-not: a small flower, with four petals, which are normally found in shades of blue with a pink or white centre. These are traditional flowers of intent in the Shire, used to express true love, and remembrance.
In which Bilbo plans to leave Erebor, and Thorin tries to understand why.
Modern AUs:
For This by northerntrash — 8k words
Summary: Thorin Durin had lived in his new flat for approximately eighty four minutes when things started to go terribly, terribly wrong. The wrongness came in the form of a package, delivered to his door, wrapped in brown paper and string, with a small tag wishing him a very sincere welcome to the building.
Just To Be by northerntrash — 22.2k words
Summary: Thorin hadn’t really wanted to go on holiday. That was why he hadn’t been on one for over a decade – not, despite what his siblings might say, because he had problems letting go of work and letting other people have control over their own hotel, which definitely wasn’t his entire life, no matter what the opinions of his family might have been on the matter.
In which people go on holiday, and find a little bit of home.
The making of a story by northerntrash — 16k words
Summary: When Bilbo finds a case of old family photographs, he becomes determined to find the original owners: what he does not expect is to become quite so involved in their lives, or that those photographs should prove quite so important.
One-sided conversations by northerntrash — 94.9k words
Summary: "Thank you for listening," Thorin said, getting to his feet. "I hope to be able to return the favour, one day."
The man on the bed didn't respond, but since he'd been in a coma for longer than Thorin had known him, that wasn't entirely surprising.
Candid by northerntrash — 42.3k words
Summary: Thorin wasn't entirely sure why there was a six-foot candid photograph of him hanging in this exhibition, but he was going to wring the neck of whoever had put it there.
In which Bilbo is a photographer, Thorin an accidental model, and Gandalf just likes to make trouble for everyone.
Nothing Gold Can Stay by perkynurples — 296.3k words
Summary: Bilbo Baggins led a rather peaceful life, thank you very much, until an old acquaintance decided to turn it upside down, and he found himself agreeing to take a job that’s… let’s say not exactly up his alley, and might eventually cost him a little more than his treasured cozy lifestyle. Who would have thought tutoring a slightly menacing monarch’s more than slightly overbearing nephew could prove to be such an adventure?
Some Magical Occurence by Drenagon — 9.5k words
Summary: Bilbo could use some magic if he's going to get the annual Christmas event at Goldmine Books to run as planned.
Instead he has Bofur, Ori and a serious case of building panic.
Then the Durins arrive.
Plan B by Drenagon — 85.7k words
Summary: Plan B: an alternative strategy; a contingency plan, devised for an outcome other than the expected plan.
Or, sending an unqualified temp to act as Thorin Oakenshield's PA because no one qualified can put up with him.
(He'd say they can't meet his standards. Of course he would.)
Meet Bilbo Baggins. He just became Plan B.
idylls of the king by aerospaces — 16.1k words
Summary: Thorin a single parent/uncle, Bilbo babysits. Fili and Kili are a handful. Essentially NANNY AU where Thorin is a perturbed Detective Inspector navigating through life.
A Remover of Obstacles by MistakenMagic — 371.7k words**
Summary: Dis often chided her older brother for being a misanthropist. She did it so often it had become a term of endearment. It was true that Thorin struggled with people; he struggled to form and maintain relationships. Dr. Grey had diagnosed him with this and Thorin hadn’t the heart to tell him this wasn’t a symptom of his PTSD, it was a symptom of his personality. He exercised a sense of apathy with almost everyone he met… But Bilbo was different. Thorin actually found himself wanting to know more about him.
** This is honestly a favorite of mine. I can't begin to describe how amazing this fic is. If you have the time, go for it! I promise it will change you for good.
This is all I have for now, but please know that I'm currently reading new ones and I'll be adding them onto this list very soon!
Have a nice read! (And hopefully, with a nice cup of tea).

lavender-rose tea
Bilbo looked back up, some considerable amount of shame sitting in his heart for the dismayed look he could not restrain. He might never settle into the hero figure that many dwarves now held him up as. He might never feel like it was a particularly heroic thing to do, stepping between Azog and Thorin. He would do it a thousand times, against a thousand foes, until there were no more foes to fight. After all that commotion, he would surely sit down for a well-deserved cup of lavender-rose tea, and he would certainly offer Thorin some.
my first bagginshield fic! i’ve loved these movies forever and ever but never thought to write about them until i very recently rewatched them with some bagginshield-tinted glasses. this is dedicated to my dear friend who watched it with me, FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME, and has found himself in the fucking trenches. enjoy!

fanfiction recommendation: bagginshield eddition
I read this fic yesterday, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since.
Now, I love mutual pining. It's easily one of my favorite Ao3 tags. But, there is something about Bagginshield mutual pining that just hits different. And, I eat it up every time.
If you're looking for a second chance, ten years later Bagginshield fic with a happy ending, you've got to give this one a try. Its got a soft Thorin (my favorite) and hobbits visiting Erebor. It had me crying actual real tears and warmed my heart at the same time.
My Ego Dies (T, 11K) by @conkers-theficwriter
The thing about unrequited love, mused King Thorin, as he stared at the four guests bowing in his throne room, was that you never got over it. King Bard of Dale had entered as he often did, with very little pomp and a friendly smile. It had taken Thorin a moment to realise that the little group trailing behind him were not children, but hobbits. The sight of their small figures and large, bare feet caused a swoop in the stomach of the King Under the Mountain, and he had hurriedly searched their faces for one familiar, only to be disappointed. All were too young to be the one he had automatically looked for. Thorin’s own hair had turned completely silver over the ten years since the quest for Erebor, and he couldn’t imagine that he would be the only one so touched by the march of time. And he did imagine. Often. It was really all that was left to him now. *** Or: What if Frodo Baggins visited Erebor ten years after Bilbo returned to the Shire, and met with Thorin Oakenshield.

I have normal thoughts but also, wouldn’t it just be really neat if while in the throes of dragonsickness, Thorin became obsessed with Bilbo. Like, in a really morally questionable way, but not to the point of crossing any serious lines. But like, also, what if
“You wanted to see me?” The hobbit asked, staring up at Thorin on his throne, flanked by both Balín and Dwalin.
“I wanted to ensure your gift was suitable.”
“Oh, yes. I learned all about mithril and I must say, it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever owned.”
Bilbo might have his doubts, but he wasn’t stupid. He knew what Thorin was after. Naturally, Kíli spilled the beans on his suspicion that Thorin might be trying to court Bilbo. Rather than be bashful, he immediately believed it.
“Have you tried it on?”
“Of course. It fits wonderfully.”
“Show me.”
Bilbo went red as he looked up at the king whose lust of gold was quickly becoming something else. Those hungry eyes bore into him. He saw the king’s greedy hands clench.
Fuck.
His pants were tighter than they used to be. Well. They used to be pants. Now they were so tattered he’d cut them into shorts.
The most shameful part of it was that Bilbo, for a moment, wasn’t sure he truly wanted to slay this dragon. For the first time, someone was earnestly pursuing him. Someone wanted him in a way that was beyond carnal. Someone who pushed beyond his coy display and gave him what he wanted.
Thorin wasn’t in his right mind.
Bilbo couldn’t want this.
But he certainly liked it.
“I’ll go put it on.” His voice was much quieter than he intended.
“Here.”
Bilbo’s eyes widened as he looked to Dwalin and Balín, who seemed momentarily dumbfounded.
“Turn around.” The king insisted. But when they hesitated, he nearly barked the command, “Turn around!”
They both shot Bilbo a concerned look before turning away.
The hobbit slowly reached up and pulled his arms into his shirt before looking up at the dwarven king, making sure this was what he wanted.
The king nodded.
Bilbo pulled his shirt off and revealed his form.

The Consort (complete)
The Consort (11364 words) by downstar Chapters: 4/4 Fandom: The Hobbit (Jackson Movies) Rating: Mature Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield Characters: Thorin Oakenshield, Bilbo Baggins, Balin (Tolkien) Additional Tags: Thorin Oakenshield Lives, Domestic Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield, Established Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield, Bilbo Baggins/Thorin Oakenshield Fluff, Consort Bilbo Baggins, POV Bilbo Baggins, Sassy Bilbo Baggins, Misunderstandings, Dwarf & Hobbit Cultural Differences, Dwarf/Hobbit Relationship(s), Dwarf Gender Concepts, Dwarf Courting, Domestic Fluff, Non-Graphic Smut, Humor, Fluff and Humor, Cultural Differences, Domestic Bliss, Domestic Boyfriends, Gentleness Series: Part 2 of The Quiet Moments - Bilbo and Thorin Summary: After a confession of their feelings, Bilbo returns to Erebor with Thorin. The great city is in the process of rebuilding, and Thorin is settling into his role as his king. Word is getting around that their king has asked an outsider - a hobbit! - to be his consort. Can their burgeoning relationship survive the pressures of kingship and cultural misunderstandings? --- This fic carries on in continuity from my one-shot The King and the Hobbit. It's part of a series of one-shots or short pieces that exist within the same continuity and in the same timeline. Check the previous fic in this collection for the story of how the two of them got together.
Excerpt:
One evening, a few weeks into his stay in Erebor, Bilbo sat hunched over a heavy metal desk, perched high on a pair of cushions, his hairy feet dangling off the edge of the chair. He’d been hard at work for hours, drafting what would one day become the first chapter of their fated quest.
Thorin approached him from behind and set his hand on Bilbo’s shoulder. He leaned down and pressed a kiss to his temple. “I’m going to sleep. Join me when you’re ready. Don’t hurry on my account. Your candlelight does not bother me.”
“Mhmm, be there soon,” replied Bilbo, his brow furrowed in concentration as he mouthed the words of the sentence he was trying to get just right. “Ah, Thorin, Thorin…” he looked up suddenly and swiveled around.
Thorin had just finished ducking out of his embroidered tunic. The flickering light of the roaring hearth set into the wall and the dim glow of the sunstones huddled up against Bilbo’s plants tossed flattering shadows across the thick muscle of his back. It also highlighted the pure white scar tissue rimmed in silver where Azog’s blade had sliced him through. Elvish medicine had saved his life, but he would always bear the mark of his nemesis and feel the wound echoed in the movement of his body.
Thorin looked over his shoulder and lifted a brow when Bilbo called his name. “Mhmm?”
Bilbo found himself staring. He still wasn’t used to seeing the dwarven king in a state of undress, especially in so casual and intimate a moment. A physique such as Thorin’s was unknown among hobbits, which went some of the way towards explaining why Bilbo had never found a lover among his own kind. There was much more there, of course, but the physical nature of his attraction had caught him off-guard more than once since he’d found the courage to acknowledge it.
Thorin noticed Bilbo’s wandering gaze and turned around. He made a bit of a cheeky show of leaning up against the wall next to the hearth, as if aware that the firelight did much to flatter his body.
Bilbo swallowed, twitched his nose and tap-tapped his pen against a spare bit of paper he used to blot the ink. “Do you…” he cleared his throat, “...do you think there’s someone who could teach me Khuzdul? I should like to add some dwarvish script to my book. I’ve also heard that Smaug left the archive virtually untouched and there are many wonderful and ancient tomes that are still in good condition. But I can’t read any of them. And that…” he rapped his pen again, “... is a speeeeecial kind of torture.”
Thorin was a stoic man, capable of very subtle expressions. But the delight at hearing Bilbo’s request was immediate and obvious. He smiled, his eyes lighting up as warm as hearthfire. He crossed the great chamber to Bilbo’s side and reached out to cup his cheek. “I will send for a scholar from the Iron Hills to be your tutor. You will have the advantage of learning under a master of languages.”
“That’s really not necessary. I can muddle along with some references and a helper. I don’t want you to go to a lot of trouble,” Bilbo replied. He felt the tips of his ears burn red, and he was suddenly grateful for the mess of his hair and the low shimmer of light.
