WIFEY. | EPISODE SIX (6.3)
start / previous / next
Typically, Lena would be inclined to relax in her sister’s presence. Lourdes had unknowingly done her sister a great kindness in her choice of meeting place. The dark of the cinema hid Lena’s facial bruises, allowing the sisters to communicate safely in the near silence of an old rom-com screening on a weekday afternoon. Perhaps it was her decision to stay out of the family business or her ability to utilise her charm and empathy like a politician but Lourdes was often the glue holding her family together, something she found herself needing to do more and more with each passing day.
After freeing herself from Hannah last night, Lena had once again found herself alone. She thought about messaging AJ, but that would mean admitting wrongdoing and for her not enough time had passed for them to go back to normal. It’s not like Lena could have discussed the thing she really wanted to anyway. AJ had made their feelings on Max clear the night the two met and they remained unchanged. While it was clearly the wrong time to view things romantically, Lena knew that her life would be better with Max in it and was willing to settle for friendship. She sensed that Max knew this too, but that they would not easily admit defeat which was fine because neither would she.
(transcript below)
[TWO FIGURES ENTER AND TAKE A SEAT IN THE BACK ROW OF A CINEMA]
(LENA): Speak then.
(LOURDES): Don’t be rude.
(LENA): Juro por dios Lourdes… (I swear to God)
(LOURDES): Cálmate. I’ll start with the headlines. The board’s not happy. They want to move forward with a replacement for Luis but Mami’s holding them up.
(LENA): What does that mean for me?
(LOURDES): You need to move faster. She’s pissed that you’re ignoring her too. The only reason I’m sitting here right now instead of her is because I talked her down.
(LENA): [Exhaling deeply] It’s moving slower out here than I’d like. I’m not a fucking miracle worker and Luis has always been slippery.
(LOURDES): You still believe he’s alive then?
(LENA): You don’t?
(LOURDES): I think at this point it’s more wish than belief. By now, the implications of him being alive are…so fucking bleak.
[Lena sighs]
(LOURDES): Let’s move on. So the Diamond gala’s coming up. Maybe that can be your chance to get things going.
(LENA): Gotta figure out how I’m getting in first.
(LOURDES): That’s handled. The Scott family have received a legitimate invite.
(LENA): How?
(LOURDES): Don’t worry about it. Take someone with you. It’ll make things appear more above board. Like we’re co-operating.
(LENA): Of course.

ok this is not exactly a rant but i've been thinking, as someone who writes, about the way that we female authors present our female characters because in the vast majority of the books I've read, they are mostly the means to an end and the end is a man.
like literally so many female characters have their own growth thrown to the wind and for what? to put a ring on it?
maybe is just not appealing to me as a reader but why can't growth and love coexist? why can't a power angry woman be loved when men are idolized through every shitty and downright abusive and toxic behavior known on god's green earth?
i want my cruel and vindictive and unhinged women to be loved like they hang the moon in the sky for the vile and cruel creatures that they are why do women need to be bite sized or worst need to be punished even if their cruelty is basically a survival instinct while the man can be everything they want regardless of why and how the math isn't mathing

Yall wanna hear a kinda funny, kinda sad story about my grandmother and hetero-normativity?
Ok, so... when my grandmother was in her 50s (I was an infant), she met a woman at the Unitarian Church. And, as can happen when you meet your soul mate, this event made it impossible for her to deny parts of herself that she had fiercely hidden her whole life.
All the drama- their affair being found out, the divorce with my grandfather, the court battle over who got the house, happened while I was a baby. Even in my earliest memories, it's just Mama Jo and Oma, and my grandfather lived elsewhere (first his own apartment, then a nursing home, then with us.)
But here's the thing- no one ever explained any of this to me. No one ever sat down and was like "hey, Rosie, so do you know what a lesbian is?" It was the 90s. It was Texas. I think my mom was still kinda processing all this, and just assumed that like... I was gonna figure it out. Don't mention it, let it just be normal. Like I think my mom thought that if she explained the situation, she would be making it weird? I dunno.
But like. In the 90s, in all the movies I had seen and books I had read, do you know how many same sex couples I had seen? Like. 0. Do you know how many "platonic best friend/roommates" I had seen? A lot. I had no context, is what I'm saying.
I literally thought this was a Golden Girls, roommates, besties situation until I was like...I dunno, 11? 12?
It was actually their parrot, an African Grey named Spike, imitating my grandmothers voice saying "Johanna, honey, it's getting late", that triggered the MIND BLOWN moment as I realized that *there's only one master bedroom and it only has 1 waterbed* when all the pieces finally clicked.
Anyway. I think it's a real important thing for kids to know queer people exist, for a lot of reasons, but also because kids can be clueless and it's embarrassing to have your grandmother be outted by a parrot because everyone just thought you'd figure it out on your own.
Anyway, here is my grandma and her wife, my Oma, after they moved to Albuquerque to be artsy gay cowboys and live their best life. They helped run a "Lesbian Dude Ranch" out there (basically just with funding and financial support. As Oma has explained "traditionally, most lesbians don't have a lot of money" so they wrote the checks and let the younger ladies actually run the ranch.)
