Joey Chavez feat. Evidence - “Reservation for One” Laid in Full by M-Boogie Song released in 1998. Mixtape released in 1999.
Okay, I’m about to break down this incredible piece of west coast underground hip hop. Joey Chavez is one of the most underrated hip hop producers to ever exist. Exhibit A: This song. This shit bumps. Evidence, who’s been consistently on point his whole career with his buttery monotone flow, makes a lot of references that I’ll explain.
Let’s start with the production. Chavez samples a small piece of “Whatever Lola Wants” by Terry Snyder. If you can catch it, you’re awesome. He also adds some deep piano notes, a mid-tempo drum track, and some horns.
The first line of the song is
Yo, accept defeat as I drop after the heat
After the Heat is the name of the 12″ single released by Chavez that this song originally appeared on. It’s the lead track on the single, so Evidence is communicating two things here. One is that Ev is the MC introducing you to the single. The other is that you should quit this hypothetical rap battle that you’re in with Evidence right now. I mean, are you hearing this instrumental? Evidence is just dropping in after that heat.
So what you wanna do? I came in bumpin’ “Jack of Spades” You came in wit’ “Two of Hearts” by Stacey Q?
“Jack of Spades” is a late 80s hip hop song by Boogie Down Productions that features a hard-hitting drum track. “Two of Hearts” is a hi-NRG 80s dance pop song that is not hard at all. Also, in cards, a jack trumps a two, so Evidence has you beat with that weak-ass song you’re playing.
How feminine is your drum tracks?, one hat no rise My DJ's in the shadows, I perform, show my Solesides
Solesides was an LA underground hip hop label that later became known as Quannum Projects. They had DJ Shadow before Mo Wax snatched him up, Blackalicious, and Latyrx. A really funky and dope 90s west coast underground label.
Babs, forgive ‘em, they know not what they doin’ They built for themselves, that's why they places lay in ruins
Babs refers to DJ Babu, the man responsible for the cuts and scratches on this song and a fellow group member of west coast underground trio Dilated Peoples, along with Evidence and Rakaa-Iriscience.
Now for the vocal samples on the hook.
Brain cells are lit, ideas start to hit And when my pen hits the paper...
and
I'm the authentic poet to get lyrical
These come from Big Daddy Kane’s 1988 classic “Ain’t No Half Steppin’”, one of the most iconic hip hop songs ever made. Kane’s flow and rapid rhymes were unmatched then. Absolutely incredible production by Marley Marl, too.
Who's the man in the hot seat?
This comes from a more obscure, but no less dope, song by Diamond D with Sadat X and Lord Finesse called “You Can’t Front (...It Is Real)”. Raw New York hip hop from ‘93. Really great production from Diamond and Buckwild (those eerie synths, though). Diamond provides the second verse and that’s where you’ll find the sample.
Ok, second verse.
My satiety limit is twenty minutes I blow more trees than Louie Freese, this flow's infinite
Louie Freese is the real name of rapper B-Real of Cypress Hill, who have made countless songs about Mary Jane.
No relaxing, I keep it movin’ like De Niro in Taxi Driver, my name's Mike, Ev when I get hyper
Evidence’s real name is Michael Perretta.
Raisin’ levels of expectancy Yeah your shit is tight, you think it's ABB quality?
ABB is an acronym for Always Bigger and Better, a 90s to early 2000s Cali hip hop label that launched Dilated Peoples along with other west coast hip hop acts. The 12″ this song appears on was also released on ABB.
I don't think so, aiyyo Ben grab the fish net Take ‘em to the pier and throw ‘em off at sunset
Ben refers to Beni B, the founder of ABB Records, and a west coast hip hop producer. He’s produced for Dilated Peoples among others.
There you have it. This super dope late 90s west coast underground heater broken down. Production, lyrics, and samples. Boom.
