PART 2 of Only Here for Food

You know when your bladder just can't hold in the piss and it has to empty itself under just about any circumstance? Well that was me right now, as I sauntered into HYBE. I used the wonderful bathroom on the first floor and with a jolly grin on my face went to the cafe. Their desserts were simply exquisite. "One new york classic cheese cake with a boba tea please". I kept all my food on the table, having brought an abundant amount for the guys as well. They may like it, and if they didn't I had so many neighbors I could just distribute the food to. I dove into the bibimbap, moaning as the flavors hit my tastebuds. This is truly what I lived for, fatty oily sweet and savory rice loaded with greasy meat, spiced vegetables, and fried egg. Taehyung walked in, clearly surprised at what I had brought and my presence. "Hey Y/N , what are you doing here? Jungkook is in the recording room".

I smiled, "Oh, I didn't come for Jungkook necessarily. I was just going to give him papers that my lawyer drew up in case I saw him around the building. I actually just came here to eat and brought some food with me in case you guys wanted to try any. Made it all early this morning after my mommy pilates class". Taehyung reluctantly took his first bite, and then it was game over. He sat there eating the food with me as I showed him reruns of different series I was watching. I showed him how I was midway through death note and my plans to dress up as a Shinigami this halloween. I was also knitting a shinigami inspired scarf with apples laced all throughout. He chuckled and laughed with me.

The rest of the guys filtered in, behooved to see Taehyung get along so well with Y/N. I was just missing home made food so much". The rest of the guys also decided to chow down, trying to steal the cheesecake from Y/n as she was slowly eating it, attempting to prolong the experience.

Jungkook walked in, sweaty and tired from recording his new track for a feature when he saw Y/n. His face contorted into disgust. What the hell was this girl doing here again? Wasn't setting up a child support plan after his unfortunately positive paternity test enough for her?

He loudly stomped in the room, slapping his doc martens against the ground. Y/N heard the noise and looked up to see him. "Hi JK, want to try some food? I just made it this morning. Took me two hours, but I wanted to bring a treat for all of you just in case. Was supposed to go on a picnic today with my boy toys but I thought I would feed you guys instead". Yet you still couldn’t turn down something sweet so you started to reach for the plate when Jin stopped you and placed a plate in front of you. Your eyes lit up when you saw the single chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting and little heart sprinkles. You jumped up to give him a kiss and he returned the gesture. “Jin always gives Y/N special treatment. You know we like cupcakes too.”, Taehyung whined. “Hey at least you didn’t have to drive all over Seoul with Jin looking for heart shaped sprinkles like I did.”, Jimin smirked. “Just ignore them. You’re both my friends and this is just weird.” The room erupted with laughter as Jin shoved a whole coconut bar in Jungkook’s mouth to quiet him before heading off to get the dishes started.

A little while later you walked into the kitchen and saw Jin with his back to you washing something in the sink. Slowly you walked forward and wrapped your arms around his waist, “Thank you again for going out of your way to make me a cupcake. I really appreciate it.” Jin squeezed your arm, “Any thing for you Y/N. I know you hate coconut but the boys had been begging me to make those for a while.” The room went silent for a while before you spoke up. “There’s something I wanted to say for a while and it’s okay if you don’t want to say it back but I wanted you to know that I love you Jinnie.”, you said before placing a kiss to the middle of his back. He turned around and gave you a big smile, “I love you too Y/N. More than anything.”

You started to lean in for a kiss when you heard someone clearing their throat and you looked over to see the other six members standing in the doorway. “Awwwww did we just witness the first I love you?”, Taehyung asked. Jin threw a towel at the boys as Hoseok and Jimin started recreating the scene they all just witnessed while Jungkook started making exaggerated gagging sounds to make his displeasure known. There’s a lot of assumptions here I don’t agree with. The west is embracing new jeans and they haven’t had physical promo like bts did. The reason why bts is not getting really embraced by the gp is cos the music they promote to the west is generic meaningless boy band music which is very unrelatable. And authenticity is a big thing in the west. If they gave Mots7 or any of their albums before that the level of promo dynamite or butter had, they would have gotten more of the gp appreciation.

Hybe is not just only promoting jk, but they were also hampering other members promo. Look at how lackadaisical they were with shipping jh, Jin & RM albums. How poorly they scheduled Face, the many issues we faced during Face era that jk never experienced. We had to tag them for basic things that a label should already know about. How they shaded jm in their own article and are several times refusing to acknowledge his no1. It goes beyond promoting one member and more into trying to stifle the rest to present an image the label has the power to make a pop star. And is probably also why they give this promo to songs the label premade and not the artist’s authentic music that the artists makes

Western GP (New Jeans vs BTS): Can I be very very honest? New Jeans music is extremely catchy and has that hyperpop element that western audiences eat up. With rise of artists like PinkPantheress, hyperpop is gaining even more popularity, and Y2K aesthetic is back. NewJeans are all that- the music and aesthetic both. I'm not sure what were their digital promo methods, but perhaps playlisting on streaming platforms? And the collab with Apple was very strategic too. Let's also not forget they have english chorus in their songs and went viral on tiktok. New Jeans are in top 5 kpop groups in tiktok. I cannot speak for NewJeans much, because I have only listened to their songs, and do not follow them.

Let's talk about OT7 songs promoted in the US first- as in Dynamite, Butter and PTD. Let's take Dynamite - a very well crafted product, basically a completely American song with American references and MJ inspired choreo. It was meant to catch western attention and did its job. But the problem was- it was a single, not an album and it didn't really showcase the range of their artistry. Yet it did the job of exponentially increasing the fanbase. It was pandemic time, people were in their rooms, with internet and Youtube. Those who were meant to find BTs, found them.

Could BTS have achieved long lasting attention with MOTS 7 promotion? Honestly, it's hard to say. BTS's music is not conventional. You will never hear a BTS song and think- 'oh! i've heard something similar', in fact, sometimes it is even difficult to comprehend what genre their songs are. A different language, a different genre, 7 different voices, with no two albums that sound similar, no viral tiktok songs. Do you know how difficult it is to crack the western market? It is a lot of information to feed. I will come back to the MOTS 7 issue later.

How does one build a fanbase for a band like BTS?

BTS's popularity and long lasting fanbase has always been formed by the story they sell. Bang PD, right from the start, wanted to show the world 7 authentic, real boys who wanted to share their original thoughts, happiness, feelings and struggles. Added to this, their underdog story. Yes, their struggles from older days are all real and valid, but knowing that story makes you relate to them. Because, aren't we all some type of underdog before we achieve something big? People have often been drawn to BTS via word of mouth, friends, 'i just wanted to know their names' and ending up watching the Taylor Guide, 'my wife took me to their concert and now all my friends love BTS', 'they taught me how to love myself' etc etc. BTS has always inducted fans who were searching for something in their lives, or are curious, or are 'willing to learn'. You cannot sit an American down and show them a BTS US interview and ask them to listen to the album and make them a forever fan. Do you know how people in the west don't watch an international film just because they refuse to read subtitles? The language barrier might be easy for armies to overlook because we are invested, but it's not easy to convince a monolingual westerner to start reading subtitles to get into an entirely different fandom.

To sum up my points above:

BTS sell their story and relatability and group dynamics, which is not possible just through basic promotion. One has to dive into BTS voluntarily and go through the plethora of content, one by one.

BTS songs are usually not tiktok viral for some reason, considering how big of an act they are. Barely any bts tracks have gone viral- BST remix, black swan instrumental (maybe), PTD dance challenge to name a few. I don't know the reason why because I have barely ever used tiktok. Because armies only interact with each other on that app and even then, they don't use bts songs as audio.

The pre-requisite is to be backed by a western label for radio, playlist, western ads etc. Because the US won't allow an outsider label to make money off their GP, simple. It just takes away the money that could have stayed with western labels.

Coming to individual member (JK) promoted in the US: I did mention in the post of mine you have linked- that Golden lacked depth. Quoting my own words directly - " While they paid attention to heavy promo, charts and playlisting for Golden, they failed to create a connection with the music- which seems highly non-personal and lacking in depth and has a non-interesting concept. The promo did do the work of making jk a common name, showcasing his talents and introducing him to the industry. But for a lasting impact, they have to create better stories with the music. Idc, army are acting too defensive when people are disappointed that he didn't write his songs. It's okay to not write, but the very least singers can do is connect to song meanings and relate to personal experiences during the promos."

And anon, you are right, to have a lasting impression in the west, one needs authenticity. Actually let me list down the non-compromisable parameters required for success in the US-

Affiliation to US based label/Connection to industry mammoths. (Give money to US/US based part of the company)

English song/ lots of english lyrics + recognizable genre

Character/ brand of the artist (which the audience calls 'authenticity', but is actually the 'brand' of the artist created by the label. People hear the artist's name and know what to expect. You hear Olivia Rodrigo and you know you will get teenage, angsty, heartbreak tracks.)

Last but not the least- tiktok push. (somehow extremely essential today)

Hybe gave JK 1,2 and 4 from above list. They tried to build up on his character, but it is incomplete and lacks depth. The character they have built for him is- Korean hearthrob who can sing and dance, inspired by Michael Jackson, the ONE member to look out from the massive band BTS (Justin Timberlake trajectory). They gave him catchy songs directed at het women, dressed him up in clothes fitting that image and made him perform live at TSX. Thanks to the massive ads and promo, people know him now. But unless he shows the true depth of his character and brand to the GP, a lot of people (non-army) won't look forward to his future works. And whether we like it or not, him not being being able to interact freely and share his thoughts in english in the interviews is still a drawback for him. (personally, i wish that was not true).

Even when some celebrities of colour get the limelight in US pop culture, it's because they are connected to the US. They emerge as this messiah for their 3rd world country, can speak english and work for US labels and production companies. The US gets to keep the money and awards, and also gets to flaunt 'diversity'. It has always worked like that when the west opened the doors for a POC.

MOTS 7 would not get GP acceptance without being backed by a US label. And would a US label ever accept a full Korean album with all Korean artists? Why would they invest in an artist of a foreign language? Can Bang PD's assistant call up US radio and get them to play Dionysus? No. But if Scooter does it, they will pay attention.

An English speaking artist can convey their feelings through words on a radio, but how will a Korean artist do that on the radio with no subtitles, to an audience who refuses to read subs in the first place? You know how the US GP reacted when Parasite movie won an Oscar, right?

Ever since 2017, BTS have tried for that hot 100, did everything they could, backed by their Korean company, tons of US interviews and what not. But at the end of the day, they had to compromise with meaning and depth and churn out an all english, MJ inspired, disco pop track which finally gave them their #1. I am not downplaying the significance of Dynamite, or saying that it's a bad song. But I simply mean that only a marked shift in genre and strategy gave them that #1.

You are absolutely right. The only properly done solo work was that of Yoongi I feel. He knows his priorities and influence on the company, and has always had a very strong connection to both inside and outside the company. I'm not sure if D-Day was mismanaged, though am sure some yoongi biased army will have things to point out. All the other members have faced mismanagement. Jimin the most, I feel. Even recently, there's a Weverse article where they wrote that "jhope led the contemporary dance with Jimin", in spring day. All respect to Jhope where he deserves because he is the dance leader indeed, but he did not lead the contemporary dance in spring day, as amazing as he is, respectfully.

I felt the same thing. I share the same sentiment with you here. The way they downplayed Like Crazy's achievements was disappointing and hurtful. That day it became crystal clear to me that Bighit did NOT see that achievement coming. None of the member's releases was meant to make this much noise, not before their Scooter backed project. They grossly underestimated the extent army can go even for 1 member (arguably the 2 most popular members in US are Jimin and Jungkook). Honestly the type of promotions JK got would never be given to other members because the other members would NOT agree to singing english songs that have zero depth and zero connection to their own feelings. JK was willing to take up that offer because.. well it's his choice. It was a golden platter, why not take it up? His image is moldable, he can sing whatever he is given and has the talent to pull it off. No matter whom we bias, JK has been the center of almost all BTS songs, a non-replaceable voice. But at the end of the day, the reason he was the one member who Bighit wanted to stand-out from the group was, it was his consent and agreement to everything the company planned for him.

I do wonder what it would have been like if all members received that kind of promo with their own artistry. But the entire premise of them being backed by Scooter/US collapses because they refuse to sing songs written by Scooter's writers. So I also agree with anon when they said "And is probably also why they give this promo to songs the label premade and not the artist’s authentic music that the artists makes."

Instead, Hybe is focusing on the other kpop groups under them. It's like the 6 members were just given their own individual management teams to manage their solo works lol. At least, let's be glad that the 6 members are getting full creative freedom for their work. I just want their solo works to be better managed. And I hope their managers, and planners, especially those on Jimin's side have learnt their lesson and come up with a foolproof promo for their next projects. I don't expect anything from BangPD, that man has been showing a certain pattern I don't want to discuss. (solely because i refuse to think what goes on in his mind).

As fans, all we can do is support the solo works we feel connected to and support BTS as a whole in future OT7 projects.

...I have a bone to pick with Jimin.

I don’t understand what Jimin thinks he’s doing not putting Letter on Apple Music or Spotify. Like, why does he think that’s a good idea? Does anybody know? This song is so perfect - Jimin's lush vocals harmonizing with Jung Kook's is beautiful - Letter needs to be available on as many platforms as possible. See, these are the kind of choices the tannies make that just causes me to laugh because yeah these hidden songs are 'gifts to fans' but it's also a crime against all that is good and honest in this world to keep it off channels those fans will gladly pay for? The fact Ddaeng is still stuck in Soundcloud purgatory is reason enough to kidnap Bang PD's nephew and sell him to the mafia, far as I'm concerned. The only reasons I haven't done it yet because kidnapping is illegal in my country, the Cosa Nostra require a blood oath, and Jin wouldn't like delays to his game update.

Letter is Promise all grown up, a little wiser and more developed, and I hope in every subsequent album Jimin releases for the rest of his career, that there is a version of Promise, a song that feels like Jimin - comforting, easy, warm, simple, and beautiful. It's a great thing Jimin has been so forthcoming in talking about the process and his reasons for making the album, the songs on it, as well as how he had key input on the choreography. I strongly suggest everyone watch his live (linked here - I should probably also mention the English subs aren't up yet, just FYI). Jimin has been very clear about what he's communicating in FACE so I won't tarry on it.

Set Me Free Pt 2

This is the best song on the album.

Alone

There are two reasons why SMF Pt 2 comes out on top over Alone though Alone in many ways is the superior song. (1) The production (including the use of autotune) in SMF Pt 2 is incredible, and (2) because Alone ends on too disturbing a note for me to dwell on, knowing that it has come from Jimin.

Everything about Alone is perfect. The way the song begins with piano, then guitar, and then drums. Jimin’s voice. That man’s voice seriously fucks with my head. It’s the way I feel every time Yoongi twitches his voice when he’s being particularly nasty. Or anytime I hear Joon’s adlibs in a song. Or what happens in my head every time Hoseok slathers his vocal inflections with grit. I don’t know if I’m making sense, but what I mean to say is that Jimin’s voice during the entire song feels like a gift. It draws you in. And then you hear what he’s singing about...

It’s heartbreaking.

I can’t abide the thought that this is something Jimin went through recently, and that I relate in a very personal way. The emotions expressed in Alone feel too raw, too scary, and too real, and while that could point to a worrying state of mind in its author, I think Jimin’s idiosyncratic bluntness and clarity of speech in Alone shows the state of someone who still reflects often, is self-aware and also resilient.

Still, it’s a sad song to hear, an even sadder one to sing, but it is one of the most powerful and beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

Face Off

I appreciate the vision Jimin had for this song. Starting with the gag of him playing the Flea Waltz in the intro - the song the members have teased Jimin with repeatedly by saying it's the only song Jimin knows how to play on the piano - Jimin used that common (good-natured) taunt and then weaponized it in a song putting those who have crossed him in their place. It's clear by the second verse when Jimin raps that he's pushing himself to express what he means in as many ways as possible. He's challenging himself and sending a message, and that I can respect.

Anon in ask 1 who talked about the album showing the five stages of grief, I agree sort of. If we were to assign a response to each song, I'd say...

Like Crazy

This is my least favourite song on the album because it never really develops, but it's also not supposed to. Jimin has said he wanted to express a dreamlike state in Like Crazy, and he does that impeccably well. The song leans into its 80s groove, heavy padded synths, something reminiscent of if Foster The People and The Weeknd made a song together. The thing about dreamlike states is that they lull your mind, and one easy way to create that effect is repetition and monotony. Think about why someone trying to hypnotize someone else tries to keep their voice steady, calm, and monotone. So, many times listening to Like Crazy I wanted the song to go somewhere, to become fuller or less predictable, but that would kill the trance so it didn't. While it's not my preference, I can appreciate Jimin's commitment to the idea of the song.

It's a great track even then. I sometimes listen to it right after Big Man, Little Dignity by Paramore.

Speaking of Like Crazy, there's been much ado about about Jimin's sexuality, queer-coding, etc in the song and so Anon in ask 5, I see where you're coming from.

Jimin is queer. I don't know what else there is to say about it or why even the mere possibility of Jimin being queer should generate the amount of fuss/discourse it does. It's possible I'm wrong of course, but like you Anon I don't think I saw Jimin even stand straight once during the entire MV. There’s not a single straight thing about this guy.

For the sticklers, perhaps the more diplomatic way of saying it is, 'many of us strongly suspect Jimin is queer.'

Jimin seems very pleased with his first album and this is my favourite thing about the last few weeks. Watching him for the last nine years, it's gratifying to see how he has fully embraced himself, his limitations, his pride, his vices, his virtues... Jimin is a strong tenacious person and in making this album, he turned that intensity inwards, towards learning to love himself. The result is five great tracks, and I'm eager to see what more he will show us in the future.

Jin-Woo was speechless at your explanation to your sudden weightless in the threshold of your art studio. There was plastic lining the entire room and a large canvas with water paint splatters on it. From the looks of water balloons placed on the floor, you had been tossing water balloons filled with paint at the canvas.

Jin-Woo didn’t have it in him to be mad. You made some obvious sacrifices for the art you were so passionate about and he didn’t have the heart to be mad, especially when he took in your shining eyes and paint covered face and plastic overalls. But still starving yourself was a bit too much

“Then next time why don’t you head over? Mom’s always happy to have you around.”

“How is it, Sarang? Do you like it?”

You placed the tablet the down and tackled him.

“Are you kidding me? I love it and I love you. Thank you so much.”

Jin-Woo gently brought you down and settled you in his lap and kissed you nose, unbothered by the paint on his monochrome clothes.

You let out a giggle.

This is called my thoughts because I refuse to call what I'm writing down as a review. Reviews inform people and this post does nothing for people.

I’ve seen posts on Tumblr calling Tantai Jin a Disney princess cuz he’s being mistreated and talks to animals 🤨

The scenery is so pretty.

3. There seem to be Chinese subtitles on the right side of the screen indicating that background music is playing but I think they cut it out because I’m not hearing anything. Maybe it’s because I’m watching it on YouTube. I don’t know about other platforms.

4. Yeah, they cut the music now and it just sounds awkward and empty.

59. I was under the impression Tantai Jin would commit murder but he just made the head cook (I think) swallow a fly. His reaction after swallowing the fly would have made you think he was being poisoned or choked.

60. It’s funny that she’s lecturing the staff about how rude they are even though this whole time she kept on saying he deserved it. You left him in the cold and whipped him. You know he’s a captured prince.

61. She’s putting all the blame on the servants rather than saying that OG! Xi Wu and even herself were wrong.

64. More specifically, Cinderella. I saw a video essay from a channel called The Take. They talk about how people victim blame Cinderella a lot for not fighting back her abusers. In one part of the video, they talked about how Cinderella allows the abuse to continue as it is very likely that her stepmother would kick her out if she acted out.

65. Tantai Jin doesn’t know that the Xi Wu in front of him is not the original. So if I were him, I’d be more cautious about what type of food Xi Wu feeds me than the servants. Although, OG!Xi Wu could’ve ordered the servants to poison Tantai Jin’s food.

66. This man gives me Jin Xixun vibes or Mo Xuanyu’s cousin who died in the first episode of MDZS/The Untamed.

67. Oh, this is hard to watch.

68. That guy threw the cake on the ground and then stepped on it. Even if I was hungry I could never take a bite of it. It took me a while to even eat/drink something that someone else touched with their hand or mouth.

i WOULD love to, thank you for picking up the ask bait,

my favorite crypton vocaloids are actually Rin and Len (do not separate them.jpeg) but other than that I also really like Gumi and Ia, and if I feel particularly like dropping a more niche one, Yuzuki Yukari. (and if we're counting SynthV, Solaria, but that seems like a cheat answer almost because her voice is so good)

That said I could list more that I like (and I did already list quite a few there that's beyond "favorite" but ya know) but beyond those it's more like a divide between "I really like the design but don't have enough songs I like to qualify them as favorites" to "I have a lot of specific songs I like but I wouldn't necessarily think of myself as a fan of the particular vocaloids that are featured in them"

As for favorite producers, one of my Favorites is GHOST, and I particularly like the songs Reckless Battery Burns, Aura, Honey I'm Home, Chattering Lack of Common Sense, The Distortionist, Happy Days, and Appetite of a People-Pleaser I'm not very good at picking just a few, haha

I'm also a fan of Kagerou Project, so a bunch of those songs by Jin

And for a producer who does make a lot of songs featuring Miku, I like PinocchioP and some specific songs like God-ish (fucking banger honestly), Apple dot com, I'm Glad You're Evil Too, and eight hundred (though the audio on eight hundred isn't The Best in my opinion, I really like the lyrics)

I'm also generally a fan of a lot of DECO*27 songs, but my favorite there is definitely Ghost Rule

Jin throws a worldwide feast with “Super Tuna”

The BTS member gives a peek into the production behind the song [2022.03.14]

“Our generation doesn’t have any good songs about fishing to listen to on their way on the highway. And there’s a lot of serious talk going on lately, so I thought it would be nice to make a song that’s kind of light and upbeat.”

The reason why BTS member Jin thought he should make “Super Tuna” was simple: He once mentioned on In the SOOP that he wanted to making a fishing song. This time, he said that, if he was going to write a song that captures the joys of fishing, then he had to do it while fishing. “I did actually want to make a fishing song, but it was really an excuse to go fishing with BUMZU. We went after I suggested to the label that the two of us fishing would make for good content.” And so Jin, with his producer-turned-fishing-buddy BUMZU, visited a fishing spot with a rough sketch for the song in hand and trading ideas as they came, fleshing out specifics for “Super Tuna,” all the while fishing for real. That process led them to the final melody in just five minutes. For his part, BUMZU found the approach unique, saying, “It was the first time in my life I worked on a song while fishing on a boat out at sea.”

The unusual approach worked because the two were filled with excitement and happiness as they pieced together the song. “I already had my mind set on ‘Super Tuna’ for the title but I didn’t find out till later that there was no tuna where we went,” BUMZU explained of a mishap, and “I was filled with worry while we were fishing, but then we caught a bunch of different fish, including big cod, and ended up feeling any kind of fish would do.” Perhaps it was thanks to this easygoing atmosphere that a small miracle occurred. “I jokingly said, ‘Seokjin, you’re a universal superstar—you’d be able to catch a tuna anyway,’ and he laughed and cast his line, and then he caught one for real. Everyone there, including the professional fisher, was shocked, and after that I said, ‘I mean, we caught a tuna—what if we see a shark next?’ And then, voila, a baby shark came and swam around the boat a bit. It gave me goosebumps. I think I saw a halo of light around Seokjin. Haha.”

Jin holds a different event at the end of every one of BTS’s performances that leaves their fans in stitches. His events take on a different form each time, whether that means tying his hair up in the shape of an apple or with a gigantic ribbon, and have already become one of the signatures of the group’s concerts. To that end, “Super Tuna” is a perfect encapsulation of Jin’s personality: Though a “universal superstar”—performing to stadiums, winning Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards—he also finds his own way of finding happiness from making a song while out fishing for tuna. And it’s a sentiment that Jin wanted to share with the people who matter most to him. “I wanted ARMY to listen to the song and have fun laughing as they watched me, and in the end I’m just happy they like it,” he said. “I had fun just watching them enjoy the song and knowing they like it. That was enough for me.” “Super Tuna” is a playful song that falls under the trot genre, and Jin put out tuna hwe and bokbunja ju at the recording to instill a lively atmosphere in the song. He also encouraged the staff, who felt awkward meeting for the first time, to join in the energetic group singalong. “I never had a recording experience like that before,” BUMZU said, painting a picture of the fun they had behind the scenes. “I was laughing so much, watching Seokjin directing the staff to sing with more energy in the chorus. He directed them really passionately, then at the end said, ‘Okay, everyone! If we nail this take, we can all go home!’ And all the staff members belted it out, and in key, too.” What the two of them said more than anything while working together was “let’s have fun and keep things light,” and the dance video for “Super Tuna” came about through suggestions from the staff as they fell for the song’s charm. According to Bang Woo-jung, Senior Professional of HYBE 360’s Creative Studio, “We originally planned to show off a simple dance to ‘Super Tuna’ on VLIVE, but it would’ve been a shame if he just danced to it once and then it was forgotten, so we asked Jin how he’d feel recording a dance video for it and he eagerly took us up on that and filmed it.” Jin pointed out how “the staff were having even more fun with it. They were so excited, suggesting this and that and even bringing in a Little Mermaid balloon as decoration for the V LIVE stream, so how could I say no? I actually think that’s the most important thing when working: keeping the atmosphere fun and exciting.” The artist’s approach of savoring every moment of his daily life while also living the life of a BTS member permeates through “Super Tuna.”

After the group wrapped up their BTS PERMISSION TO DANCE ON STAGE – LA concert, Jin appeared on his birthday V LIVE last December 4 and “Super Tuna” was shown for the first time, where it was meant as one of his fun events and as a kind of gift. He went into details about the production process behind the song at length, apparently feeling shy, but fans were entirely won over by the unexpected song and “Super Tuna” was an immediate sensation. The song was the top trending song on YouTube globally for 16 consecutive weeks and charted on the Billboard Hot Trending Songs chart for 11 straight weeks despite not receiving a fully “official” release, while parodies and dance challenges of the choreography went viral on social media and video sharing platforms worldwide. By February 26, videos with the #supertuna hashtag exceeded 320 million on key short-form video service TikTok, and major news and other media in Korea and abroad were reporting on the popularity of “Super Tuna” and the phenomenon of its associated fun challenges.

“I couldn’t believe it at all,” Jin said. “I just expected the fans who like fun stuff to just sort of enjoy it and say, Okay, nice song. But I was seriously taken aback and surprised when I saw how the song was doing way better than I ever could’ve expected.” The day after the release of “Super Tuna,” Jin even made an appeal to fans on Weverse to stop with the challenges. “Honestly, I felt a little awkward. It’s really rough compared to the kind of high-quality music I’m used to putting out with BTS, so I wanted ARMY to be the only ones who knew about it. It seemed to me that ARMY thought, I can’t keep this weird thing to myself, and they were having fun spreading it around. So I gave up. (laughs) I saw ARMY say, ‘We have permission to dance.’ So I said, ‘Yeah, you’re right—you do,’ and came to accept it.”

As Jin explained on Weverse, “Super Tuna” was “made to be simply enjoyed,” but making a song that’s just for fun isn’t always a simple process and “it took a lot of effort.” According to BUMZU, although the song didn’t require anything overly technical, making a trot song with comically B-grade sensibilities required an entirely new approach through trial and error. “It was important to have a hybrid of different feelings,” he said. “In terms of the sound, we made it by looking to the feeling of “ParaPara Queen” by So Yoo-jin, then added details specific to ‘Super Tuna’ by continuously trading ideas with Seokjin. So I guess you could say ‘Super Tuna’ falls under the alternative EDM trot genre.” To get into a style that was such a departure for him, Jin approached the song with a different vocal style than usual. “When I sang the ‘palttak palttak’ part, for example,” Jin said, “I would’ve sung a short ‘palttak’ if I were singing for BTS, but in ‘Super Tuna’ I sang it like, ‘pa-alttak,’ to highlight that rustic feel. I must’ve sung that part at least 50 times.” You can feel how he was not only aiming to have fun while making the song but also exhibited the professionalism expected from the members of BTS.

The choreography, now famous for having inspired a number of popular challenges online, involved a similar creative process. Son Sung Deuk, the performance director for the song, said Jin asked for “a fun dance that was simple enough that anyone could dance along to it,” but that he had to go through several iterations of the dance before his own idea of simplicity lined up with Jin’s. “The choreography seemed plenty easy to me, but he said it had to be even easier. Per Seokjin’s feedback, I took out more and more, to the point I wondered if it was okay to remove so much.” Though the whole idea of “Super Tuna” was dreamed up on an impulse and its production was like a fun day at the beach, the choreography had to be looked over with a fine-tooth comb with the express requirement of simplicity kept in mind at all times in order to come across as intuitive. Son said the final version of the choreography benefitted from all that work. “Moves that look easy to a professional can feel difficult for the layman, but I think keeping the moves truly easy made ‘Super Tuna’ more approachable so more people could join in on the fun.”

“Super Tuna” actually first became popular shortly after its release thanks to ARMY making their own challenges and parodies, but it took on a whole different kind of challenge with young children after that. Videos of groups of kids, their eyes mesmerizingly fixed on the “Super Tuna” video as they sing and dance along with Jin, started to make the rounds through different online communities and through social media, while well-known characters, including the “big three” children’s characters in Korea—Pinkfong, Pororo and Cocomong—picked up on the trend and did their own versions of the dance cover challenge, unintentionally positioning “Super Tuna” as a kids’ pop song. On top of trending with the generations and groups most familiar with video sharing, we saw workers in related industries at places like frozen tuna processing plants and deep-sea fisheries, and even people from government agencies like the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and mascot characters for municipal governments, all join in on the “Super Tuna” craze Jin sparked, savoring their daily lives just as Jin had originally envisioned. That’s the kind of tuna feast we can have when someone with the weight of BTS behind them sets out to bring happiness to the people.

“I barely even had the choreography memorized” for “Super Tuna,” which was paramount to the spread of the challenge, Jin said, “and was busy thinking about the theme park I was going to go to after the shoot, so I’m flummoxed people are into it this much.” But one member of staff who was present pointed out Jin’s earnestness, describing how “he practices choreography whenever he’s got time, even when he’s busy with concerts. After filming, he checked little details like the graphics in the video carefully and offered feedback.” Son added that Jin is the sort who “knows exactly what it is he has to do and quietly gets down to work, no matter the situation or his role,” and the song captures that pristine attitude Jin takes toward life. It also taught Jin a small lesson: “There’s a lot of things I’m supposed to worry about when I’m working, like how well the work will be received, so even if I was doing something I’m supposed to enjoy, it became work,” Jin said. “But ‘Super Tuna’ taught me that, if I try to make that kind of work fun and exciting, I can feel differently about it.” On his previous birthday, Jin released “Abyss,” a track that touched on his innermost feelings. Both it and “Super Tuna” are the artist’s expressions of his everyday feelings and have Jin written all over them. And he opened up about those feelings and experiences in ways he knew fans would be most readily receptive to. BUMZU, who worked on both tracks, said Jin “has an overwhelming desire to share his inner self through music and I could tell his whole body’s filled with thoughts of his fans. I remember how the last thing he talked about at the end of each stage of work on the song was his fans.” This is a man with enormous influence who still appears humble as he shares about his moments of happiness and sadness with his fans. Many people, not just fans, have found means of injecting a little energy into their own lives thanks to Jin sharing his emotions through song. Only Jin could pull this off—the same BTS megastar who followed through on the plan he made while fishing to actually make a song about fishing. Unsurprisingly, he had only a small comment to make about all that:

“There’s nothing grandiose about it. If I think the fans will like it, I just do it.”

you nod your head before turning around and pressing a kiss to jungkook’s lips. “have a good day, hun” you whisper against his lips as you continue to rock jia to sleep and jungkook presses a kiss against your head before he’s leaving you with the twins and soon out of the house.

once jia is sound asleep, you put her back in the crib and sleepily walk back to sleep where jaemin is and sleep for another hour before waking jaemin up for school. he goes to an early starter school that starts are preschool to 3rd grade and it’s the same school ji-ae enrolled jungkook in when he was younger.

you go down stairs and make jaemin a bowl of cinnamon oatmeal with sliced apples, sliced bananas, blueberries, and orange juice for breakfast and as he’s eating, you iron his school uniform.

“say aah” you tell jaemin who follows your instructions and does what you’re doing. you allow him to brush his own teeth but you go back over his teeth and floss his teeth too.

after giving jaemin a bubble bath, you get him dressed for school and arrive there by 8:30 on the dot. you walk inside the building and walk with him to his classroom that is doing their usual free-play before they begin the day.

“okay min, be good. daddy will come pick you up today. your lunch is in your backpack kay?”

“okay mommy!! i love you”

you give jaemin a kiss to his head and watch his teacher greet your son with all smiles. once jaemin was dropped off, you circle back home to relieve ji-ae and take care of the twins on your own so ji-ae can tend to her endeavors.

you bathe your twins, dress them, and warm up their bottles with freshly pumped breastmilk. you really enjoy being a mother and love the little family you and jungkook created. jin-sun and jia are such happy babies and don’t really cause much problems for you until they’re upset.

you don’t really do much except for take care of the twins which can sometimes be exhausting but you love every minute of it.

“mr. jeon!” his personal assistant yells barging in his office while jungkook is on a call. “s-sorry, but-,”

“no need to introduce me. he knows who i am. right jungkook?” says mr. hwang, tina hwang’s father.

Jungkook is surprised to see his ex-girlfriend’s father here at his workplace, Jungkook nods, well, talking on the phone and he quickly finishes off the call, he tells the personal secretary to leave so he can talk to Mr. Hwang.

It’s not that surprising that he is here right now because they have done business together several times, but.. the last time they saw each other was probably like a year ago. “Hmm Please sit down… to what do I owe this pleasure to?” Jungkook asks the older man, asking him indirectly why he’s here.

and he doesn’t exactly like Tina’s father, because he was really good friends with his father, Jeon Jaekuk.

“is it like something business related?” Jungkook asks, yes, he’s been planning to open another hotel, but this time in Dubai. “or is this regarding my newest hotel project?” Jungkook folds his hands, “but before we get to business, would you like some coffee or any beverage?” He smiles, Today is a packed day, so he’s a little confused as to why he’s really here because he didn’t even make an appointment.

“Seems like it’s something urgent? You didn’t make an appointment so that’s why I’m wondering, Mr Hwang.” He’s waiting for the older man man to speak, he commands his secretary, to bring in some treats and beverages for the two of them.

And he hopes that the old man will hurry this meeting up because he has to visit some sites and then he has to pick up Jaemin in a few hours.

And he also promised you that he would be home early today.

“Next time just make an appointment will you? I’m kind of busy today so I’d appreciate it if you could hurry this up.” Maybe he does sound a little rude, but he takes his time very seriously. And Mr Hwang is more than familiar with jungkooks cold and ruthless nature when it comes to business.

And he cannot wait to go home and be with you and his family already.

How are y’all? I’ve been feeling like Snow White lately with all the animal and insect encounters this week but I feel good about it. I helped a spider cross to find its mate and a caterpillar find a safe place to walk so it can hopefully transform. Hehe I call that a successful week already.💪

I know that Chuseok is also near and the beginning of autumn is also on the 23 when Kook will be in New York. I wonder if the leaves will start to show lol ever since I saw the film When Harry Met Sally, I think that autumn in New York is also beautiful.😭 I also rewatched the film last week to get into the feels lol But, I wanted to bring back what I said to Jin in the videos because Jin did bring a good point of how in the beginning of autumn it is a time to talk about beautiful things you want out of life as the leaves fall, we also learn to let go and let that feeling simmer. It is like a time to look back at what you let go with the feeling of warmth because you make room for new leaves to grow. This of course is in reference to trees but I think it’s a good one. These days my attitude is less bitter and more of sweetness lol I am inside like “f this and f that” but just low toned than before lol I love that for me. 😇 But I hope y’all can feel that sense a bit with this autumn. Something in the air for this one hits different and I think it’s because some of us are finally feeling warmth in our surrender to most things. Hehe I love that for us all. 🍁Happy autumn!!!🍂 Happy letting go and jumping into a pile of fallen leaves because it’s time to enjoy in what has fallen. 😊

Favorite recent reads - Part 2

Finishing off my list of favorite books read in the past two years!

Breasts and Eggs by Mieko Kawakami

Breasts and Eggs is a two-part novel with a woman named Natsu as the center. The first part focuses on a summer when she is visited in Tokyo by her older sister, who is looking to get a breast enhancement procedure done, and her niece, who for reasons unknown has stopped speaking. The second part takes place years later as Natsu contemplates her options to pursue motherhood as she grows older without a partner.

I was profoundly impacted by this story and its discussions of identity, as a woman, as a mother, as a child. One of the characters holds the view that giving birth to a child is essentially an act of violence against them, because the child never asked to be born and you cannot guarantee that it will live a safe, happy, healthy life. While extreme, this tapped into my concerns about bringing a child into the world in its current state, and it strengthened my resolve that a child is a blessing to you as a parent. The child owes you nothing because you wanted to have them, and you should be doing everything in your power to make them feel happy and loved.

The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai

I always thought of myself as more of a contemporary fiction reader, but The Mountains Sing opened my eyes to the beauty and intrigue of historical fiction as well. This epic tale spans three generations of the Tran family as they navigate life in Vietnam through various harrowing historical events, such as the Land Reform, the Great Famine during the Japanese occupation, and the separation of the North and South and the resulting Vietnam War. Each generation of the family experiences loss, suffering, and sacrifice of unimaginable scale, but they continue to endure and build themselves back up each time with inspiring grit and grace. The importance of family, forgiveness (for others, and yourself), and staying true to your values were heavily instilled in me. The prose is beautiful, poetic, and paints a picture of Vietnam that I never knew, and I gained a greater understanding of the history of this embattled country that was never taught to me. Also, it had me craving pho the entire time I was reading it.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

I saw The Mountains Sing often being compared to Pachinko, which was published a few years earlier, so I decided to make this my next read and it confirmed that I do in fact love sweeping historical sagas. The central character is Sunja, but the story starts in 1910 with her parents and follows the family all the way to 1989 with Sunja's grandson. I was aware of the atrocities that the Japanese committed against Koreans both in Korea and in Japan, but seeing it laid out on a more detailed, personal level was eye-opening and devastating. As pointed out by Sunja's mother, a woman's lot is to suffer, and so do all the women of Pachinko. They work endlessly and sacrifice everything for a better future for their children, and despite that, things don't always work out the way they wish. But it is the strength and resilience of these woman in the face of adversity that keeps the family marching forward, its flame never extinguished no matter how hard the winds may blow.

As a side note, the television series adaptation by Apple TV+ was ambitious and really well done. It took a lot of liberties with the plot but kept the important points, and the way it tells the story with parallel timelines is very interesting and effective. I live for Steve Sanghyun Noh as Isak, and I look forward to the seasons to follow.

Bonus: Greatest disappointments

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig - Predictable, painfully awkward, and preachy. I read it because it was in like every book club and receiving all kinds of hype but it was a huge letdown.

The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki - I was excited to read Ruth Ozeki's newest novel after loving A Tale for the Time Being so much, but this wasn't it. The premise was interesting but it felt really long and a little too meta, and Benny wasn't a very likeable main character even though I know it's not really his fault.
