After three ways in the rain image
when waking your counterimage: he,
the magician. Angels weave you in
the dragonbody. Rings in the way,
long in the rain I become yours.

"The curious expression of character given by handwriting is due to the automatic or unconscious nature that it acquires by habit. So Automatic drawing, one of the simplest of psychic phenomena, is a means of characteristic expression and, if used with courage and honesty, of recording subconscious activities in the mind. The mental mechanisms used are those common in dreams, which create quick perception of relations in the unexpected, as wit, and psycho-neurotic symptoms. Hence it appears that single or non-consciousness is an essential condition and as in all inspiration the product of involution not invention."
— Austin Osman Spare, Automatic Drawing

"AUTOMATIC DRAWING" ANDRÉ MASSON | PARIS, 1924 [ink on paper | 9 1/4 x 8 1/8"]
André Masson began automatic drawings with no preconceived subject or composition in mind. Like a medium channeling a spirit, he let his pen travel rapidly across the paper without conscious control. He soon found hints of images—fragmented bodies and objects—emerging from the abstract, lacelike web of pen marks. At times Masson elaborated on these with conscious changes or additions, but he left the traces of the rapidly drawn ink mostly intact.

Surrealist Games #1
I bought a book:
A Book of Surrealist Games
I’ve been looking for this for years.
And because I think Tumblr content and surrealism/dadaism share a common origin point, I’ll be posting my thoughts on the games inside and linking to ways we play similar games now.
Tumblr media
First up: Automatism.
Automatic writing or drawing, The Exquisite Corpse, Simulation, Definitions, and Conditionals are all classic examples of games that employ this technique. A century removed from the progenitor of the movement, we play similar games here on the hellsite but with the added advantage of AI. Tools like autocorrect and AI tools such as GPT and DALL-E give us the element of chance in creating at our fingertips.
Definitions is a multiplayer game where one person writes and conceals a question such as “What is love?” and the next player writes an answer without seeing the question. “The shadow formed by a star’s collapse.”
We play several iterations of this game with autocorrect (i.e. Write “my gender is” and let autocorrect finish the sentence: “my gender is a bit not good”). But we also play that game of deliberate misidentification where someone (sometimes genuinely?) asks “Who/what is X?” and what ensues is a long string of wrong answers and corrections. (“Who is Neil Gaiman?” “He’s one of the first people who landed on the moon.” “No you’re thinking of Neil Armstrong. Neil Gaiman is the guy from How I Met Your Mother.” etc.)
The Exquisite Corpse is played by at least three players and is a bit like Mad Libs.
The first person writes a definite or indefinite article and an adjective and conceals it by folding the paper
The second person writes a noun and conceals it
The third person writes a verb and conceals it
The process is repeated with another definite or indefinite article and an adjective5. And finally a noun
This produces sentences like the eponymous: “The exquisite corpse shall drink the new wine.” It’s a bit formulaic but this is one thing that would work better in discord than on Tumblr. (Someone tell @staff we need spoiler text.)
Conditionals is a similar game that would benefit from spoiler text. An ‘If’ statement is written by one player and the next player writes the 'Then’ statement. The examples in the book are pretty random and not all that clever so to anyone who read this, I leave you with the following conditional:
“If matriarchy swallows capitalism…”
