Watching Eurovision and seeing Sheldon Riley, who is on the autism spectrum, absolutely made me sob. Not only because his pain is, unfortunately, so relatable to me and my experience as an autistic person, but also because it was so unbelievably inspiring to see an autistic person on stage. I rarely see people on the spectrum represented so there were some happy tears too. And I’m so thankful to him for spreading the message that autism isn’t something we have to ‘overcome’. The thing that is holding us back is mostly the limiting believes of others. And the symbolism of the unmasking he did at the end was absolutely beautiful. Also, he just sounds like an angel.

The fourth book in the Shivadh Romances, The Twelve Points Of Caleb Canto, is now available for purchase in print and epub!
Already familiar and just want to buy the book?
The Twelve Points Of Caleb Canto: Hardcopy | Epub
The book is $4 for epub and $18 for print; these prices vary by currency for the hardcopy, but I’ve priced them as affordably as possible. (Lulu’s rates and minimum pricing have both spiked, my apologies for selling an $18 romance novel.)
Want to learn more? Read on!
Askazer-Shivadlakia is “the little country by the sea” — a coastal micronation perched between France and Italy, with Europe’s only Jewish royal family and a distinctly queer-friendly culture. The Shivadh romances follow the democratically-elected king, Gregory III, and his extended family, as well as their friends and partners.
The first three books are available in hardcopy and epub, and are also available as a single “omnibus” volume; you can learn more about them and find purchase links here. It should be possible to read Twelve Points without having read the earlier books, but there may be context lacking. You can also download the previous books for free as PDFs here.
The Twelve Points Of Caleb Canto
Twelve Points is roughly 90K words, and depicts a happy-ending romance between Caleb, an autistic trans man, and Buck, a bisexual cis man, set against the backdrop of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Caleb Canto moved to Askazer-Shivadlakia to live a quiet life, teaching music at a local school and writing pop songs on the side. When he accidentally wins the country's first ever Eurovision National Final, he's put on a new and perhaps overly-exciting path to fame, and drawn into the orbit of the Shivadh royal family -- a collection of earnest politicians, oddballs, and charming rogues. And that's not even including the UK’s Eurovision representative, Buck Haverd, a teal-haired rocker who makes questionable life choices. When Buck arrives in Askazer-Shivadlakia, planning to hide out and work on his latest album, he and Caleb form a friendship based equally on a love of music and on trolling each other ruthlessly.
Soon both are headed to Turin, immersing themselves in the glamor of Eurovision; with a lot at stake for Buck’s career, they’re going to have to decide what they want, and face what might happen if either one of them wins.

Autists without faith in the eternally-risen Christ lose sense of their humanity. It's real. The research is there. We are sensitive to many things both physical and spiritual. The Shroud of Turin is real btw. It's time to get breadpilled. It's time to memorize the Nicene Creed. It's time to eat cereal (and the Eucharist).

Nellas?
one aspect about them i love
she’s adorkable with her social awkwardness. imagine you bring in a murder witness and all she can say is “I was sitting in a tree. I think your daughter sat in trees too”. the narn is a very serious tragedy.
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
ok like yeah she’s silly but there’s a tragedy with her character as well. she has the best outcome you could get from the narn, surviving both Turin’s shenanigans and the aftermath, but she still loses everything. her kingdom, her friends, their memories of her
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
she definitely survived the second kinslaying, since she always avoided Menegroth. sooo what if she found Elured and Elurin 🤔
one character i love seeing them interact with
I love to imagine her as a sort of big sister figure to Túrin. Túrin is this autistic outcast in a new kingdom where everyone else isn’t even the same species as him, and Nellas is like oh hey I’m an autistic outcast too and she takes him under her wing
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
I want to see her meeting Niënor. they’re parallels in a way (see: next point) and they don’t look the same unlike the Niënor/Finduilas parallels, but I feel like there’s got to be some other similarities between them, moreso in character than appearance
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
so you know how in that last scene with Túrin and Mablung’s brief reunion where Túrin is giving an incorrect description of Niënor? I’ve seen a theory that Túrin was actually describing Nellas there, and that Glaurung had mixed up his memories of them. I think this makes sense, since there was already a line earlier about Túrin barely remembering his childhood with Nellas. just, Túrin can’t have anything, even his friends who survived ;_;

I'm really proud of myself.
I went to Turin to visit a friend today, we saw the Egyptian Museum (it's the second largest Egyptian Museum in the world!!! So many artifacts to see!)
After that he wanted to take me to a Kurdish restaurant he really likes. I live in a small town, the only non Italian food we have is Chinese and Japanese.
Now, I have a lot of issues with food, in some cases because I don't like the taste or I can't handle the spices, but in others it's because I have issues with texture/consistency.
Anyway, we went to the restaurant. I tried two or three different things even tho I was a little scared tbh. Well... I'm happy to report that I ate everything AND I really loved it!!
Side note: I was telling him about all my issues with food (and other stuff) and he thinks I may be autistic

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/NLpq37u
by zzzrina
( Modern AU / Set in Turin, Piedmont, Italy )
Sokka's sister always takes care of him when his chronic illness is acting up, and he's thankful for it, really. It's exactly the reason he can't bring himself to call her when it's a special day for her. He can't stay suffering by himself, though, so he's forced to call the closest available person. Somehow, that person ends up being Zuko Takahashi.
P.S. The title is just temporary until I find something better

Húrin for the ask game:)
-@outofangband
Thank you!
One aspect about them I love
This is a bit random but I like the way he's connected to Nienor! Turin and Morwen have their whole thing, but I really like all the parallels between them as well. 'Morwen saw in the grey eyes of Nienor the steadfastness of Hurin' and 'the very likeness in woman's form of Hurin'. It's tragic they never get to meet and Hurin only saw her through Morgoth's eyes. Morwen and Turin are at rest together, but Hurin like Nienor chose the sea as his grave.
One aspect I wish more people understood about them
That Morgoth distorted what he saw of his family and lied as well. I think this is pretty well known to be fair but like it really wasn't his fault how he behaves after his release, even without taking his huge amount of trauma into account.
One headcanon I have about this character
He doesn't have any scars from Angband, as part of Morgoth presenting him as 'one that was held in high honour'. But his eyes turned completely black and only one returned to blue after staring into Melians.
One character I love seeing them interact with
I'm really interested in all the little bits we get about his and Turin's relationship. The distance and possible conflict created by Turin not understanding Hurin's indirect Elvish speech is important to me. I'm autistic and often can't understand certain nuances in my parents speech and this can be really frustrating! But I like to think when Hurin realised Turin's confusion he made a deliberate effort to speak more plainly. He seems to understand his son and allow him his 'quirks' given his whole reaction to the Sador, knife business and generally seems to love him a lot.
One character I wish they would interact with/interact with more
Fingon probably! Canonically Hurin was away a lot in Barad Eithel/working with Fingon’s forces and this relationship always seems underappreciated in fics set around the Nirnaeth. And I know Hurin didn't speak about Gondolin for secrecy reasons but I do like to think he talked to Fingon about Turgon. Fingon was probably so happy to meet someone who had seen his brother more recently. Also sidenote is it possible Hurin was the first person to tell Fingon about Aredhel's death?? Because like even if he couldn't really talk about Gondolin this feels like pretty huge info to omit, and since we know he met Maeglin, he likely knew it?
One headcanon I have that involves them and one other character
That he was good friends with Aerin and it was she that introduced him to Morwen!

can I ask Húrin, Morwen and/or Lúthien for the ask game?
-@outofangband
thank you!!! 🫶❤️‼️
hurin 🌊
Sexuality Headcanon: i dont know this and i dont think he does either tbh! always had other things to worry about and was happy with morwen 🫶 maybe het maybe bi he can do anything
Gender Headcanon: oooh him and morwen as t4t maybe 💗
A ship I have with said character: him and morwen…who else!
A BROTP I have with said character: oh!!!! with turgon definitely!!!
A NOTP I have with said character: everyone in angband needs to leave him alone!!!!!!!
A random headcanon: in a modern au he would have his phones ringtone super loud at all times. you can hear it ringing four aisles over in the supermarket!!!!
General Opinion over said character: so tragic…it makes me sad to think about him too much!!!!!!
morwen ❤️‍🩹
Sexuality Headcanon: same as hurin =)
Gender Headcanon: see hurin!! t4t!!!!!
A ship I have with said character: 🤭 huriiin
A BROTP I have with said character: her and aerin!!!!! 🫶
A NOTP I have with said character: havent seen her shipped with anyone else really…
A random headcanon: i loooove autistic morwen so much. but thats not a new headcanon so heres one: hurin used to braid her hair for her. she wore it loose after he left and she cut it off after she sent turin away
General Opinion over said character: i really really like her!!!! so compelling!!!!
luthien ⭐️
Sexuality Headcanon: beren
Gender Headcanon: the usual elf gender weirdness gets amplified due to melian being her mom and being able to sorta change shape. if idril is more of an elf girl than other elf girls the opposite is true for luthien. maybe sort of like fungi do it 🤔
A ship I have with said character: beren
A BROTP I have with said character: huan 🐩 also her and her mom 🥺🥺🥺
A NOTP I have with said character: celegorm should leave her alone‼️‼️
A random headcanon: i think itd be really cute if her hair and plants around her reacted to her emotions - her hair rises up in anger as bristling leaves do the same, her hair curls up in embarassment and flowers hide their heads. so many flower buds pop open when she laughs!
General Opinion over said character: i love all of tolkiens characters that wanted a happy end and took it with both hands and then it all worked out so well. im always very happy for them!!! i think shes lovely ❤️

Time for my final 'I am sad because of tennis' post of the year x (putting this below the 'read more' because it's a bit of an essay and nobody else cares lol, I just want to get this off my chest)
This week is the tour finals in Turin, where the top 8 players of the year compete against each other. I was a bit worried that Stef wouldn't make it there, he's had a rough year, but he did. But then he ended two practices early and just didn't look right, it's something to do with his back- I hope nothing serious, he's suffered enough
You play 3 matches in the round robin, he lost to Jannik Sinner on Sunday (who I loathe, not him personally but his fans are just insufferable) and was playing Holger Rune today. He retired 3 games in, it was clear he was struggling, and god I know people don't like him but an entire arena booing someone who was very obviously in pain :(
The online comments were worse (yes I know I need to stop looking lol). So many people going on about how selfish Stef was for playing knowing he was hurt, because it's unfair to the audience who paid to watch a good match? Also unfair to Hubi who was the alternate player, apparently Stef should not played and given Hubi that chance- sorry but Stef earned that spot, he isn't obliged to make decisions based on what would be nice for other people
Before the Sunday match there were a few Sinner fans (including this one awful woman on reddit who is so annoying that she is honestly the main reason I don't like him) who were accusing Stef of faking it, either as an excuse for his inevitable losses or to get in Jannik's head- funnily enough they have piped down now 🙄 Stef very rarely withdraws, he'd hardly be the first to try and push through on adrenaline and painkillers, but as usual he is getting far more shit than anyone else
We all have our likes and dislikes, there are several players I have an irrational hatred for, and there are definitely valid reasons to dislike Stef. But most of the criticism he gets is just because people find him weird and annoying, there are far worse people (Zverev, Kyrgios etc) who don't get anywhere near the amount of personal insults that Stef does. IDK, picking on someone who is likely autistic (this isn't an armchair diagnosis, Stef's dad basically admitted it) for being weird and awkward leaves a very bad taste in my mouth
Even the other players were making fun of him earlier in the week :( Alcaraz was asked in their press conference who the funniest person was, before he could answer Rublev jumped in and said 'Stefanos' in a clearly mocking way- in itself it isn't that deep, but making someone who isn't even there (and quite frankly gets enough shit already) the butt of a joke, especially when said joke was intended to make two people who really don't like him (Medvedev and Zverev) laugh... it just felt very mean spirited
Usually I am in the camp that if that many people don't like you there's probably a reason. But like I say, I get why people don't like Stef, but it's never 'I don't like his opinion on XYZ' or any other valid criticism, it's 'lol what a weirdo' (or 'autistic freak' as I saw today). There are plenty of people who genuinely hate him but I think most of the time it's more that he's just an easy target. He is weird and awkward and shy but those are some of the reasons why I like him so much
It's been a rough year for my boys- Felix at least perked up towards the end of the season, lord knows about Shapo and Matteo :( I just hope 2024 is a bit kinder to them all

Every now and then I decide to write about what made me headcanon Turin as autistic, and so I write a few hundred words before realising that I haven't actually done anything. It just feels as though I've pointed at a bunch of circles and said, 'Look how round they are!' It ends up feeling rather dull, and I've never actually finished any of the times I've started because I don't know how to make it interesting.
