Stim toys are not a tool for autistic people to make stims less annoying for neurotypicals. I'm tired of my teachers coming to tell me to grab my stress ball as soon as I move an arm or a leg. I need to make large movements and these stims cannot be replaced by more discreet ones. Stim toys are undoubtedly useful for some autistic people but not for all, and they are not made for the comfort of neurotypicals.

Stimming doesn’t always = distressed. Bodily stims doesn’t always means need fidget toys.
Some days want rock and hand flap and vocal stims. Some says want tangle or fidget spinner or sensory slug.
Yes body stims can = shutdown, near meltdown. But doesn’t always. Can mean want to, or under stimulated, or need regulate.
Don’t always need stop or suppress bodily stims, personally find more helpful then fidget toys and know many that feel same way.
They (fidgets) amazing especially if need hide stims. But many don’t need want able to. Instead trying normalize fidgets for stims, understand bodily stims okay and real thing and not always need be stopped.

While it's true that for some people, (certain) stims are an easy way to observe distress, I think there needs to be more awareness in allistic people that a lot of autistic people just stim for the sake of it, simply because were understimulated and / or we just dont control our bodies movements.
I've been repeatedly asked if I'm fine by so called mental health professionals for rocking etc, who know I'm autistic. The immediate assumption is this is a sign of distress instead of my natural body language / movement. Less assuming, when you know someone and their stims well you might be able to tell that x stim means x emotion or situation, but for the rest of us, just maybe, dont? It's also just a bunch of stigma surrounding certain stims, because if I had been tapping my fingers etc i wouldn't have been assumed in distress. It's not my fault my body likes to rock.

stimming is a self-soothing behavior that can be used to calm down feelings of stress, anxiety, overwhelming emotions, or physical discomfort. stimming is a natural, and healthy behavior, and it is important to allow others to stim when they need to. i am a nonspeaking autistic AAC user, and i stim a lot because it is a helpful way to regulate my emotions, and a way for me to express myself. stimming is a beautiful, and essential part of who i am, and i am proud to call myself a stimmer!

Anyone else stim by walking around and listening to music?
I really like mouthing the words if I’m listening to something that has lyrics. I also like doing conductor hand motions especially if I’m listening to instrumental.

Me: I don’t think I stim, at least not that much
Also me for the last 20 years:
Walks on toes when thinking hard or feeling jittery
Taps out repeating patterns with fingers and toes when feeling social anxiety
Repeats big words over and over in my head when unable to clear intrusive thoughts
Wiggles isolated leg muscles when overwhelmed by loud noise
Rubs hands in circles on carpet when trying to speak clearly with friends
Chews lips and fingernails constantly
Listens to the same song for hours on end when tired or upset
Repeatedly puts hair up and takes it down again when trying to focus
Intentionally makes limbs/hands fall asleep when bored so the tingly feeling acts as a distraction
Paces constantly
Always has to have a show to watch when trying to do anything productive (almost always Criminal Minds)
Can’t fall asleep without rubbing feet together or wiggling toes for several minutes
Stays on the merri-go-round until physically sick
Does consecutive summersaults on the trampoline until dizzy
Wiggles fingers when excited
Conductor hands to music
Bounces excessively when enjoying music
Compulsively reorganizes bookshelves and desk and art supplies and collectibles when bored/understimulated
Rubs face to the point of causing rashes when thinking hard or overwhelmed (usually this happens when I’m driving)

I will NOT do: the dream team, religion based, anything offensive (including problematic people)

So many people still seem confused.
It’s a privilege to mask. Not a good one, but you have an advantage over those of us who either can’t anymore or could never in the first place.
As someone who used to have the ability to mask, you get more opportunities when they can’t tell or get an idea on your autism. I could do a lot more, had more chances before stopped being able to mask (or unmask on my terms)
The ability to willingly unmask is a privilege. Not everyone got that choice. Some people decided to just be themselves when they was ready. Not everyone got the decision.
The ability to freely stim is a privilege. This is something people really don’t wanna hear but it is one. I stim and people think I’m about to fight someone. That I’m a violent person and it needs to be stoped. I watch the white kids stim and everyone encourages it. We do the same thing. We both rock, we both flap our hands and arm, we both jump when excited.
Their stimming is seen as a need to self regulate
Mines is seen as a act of violence that needs to be stoped. That’s a privilege.
I can’t stim without the possibility of being told to stop or leave the room because it’s “obvious” I’m ready to punch someone. I can’t stim without knowing someone is worried I’m ready to attack, ready to just jump on them. I have to result to stim toys when I need bodily stims while the white kids can choose which they want. Look and me and tell me that’s not privilege.
It’s okay to be upset at these things. But understand your position is one of a privilege not everyone has.
