y'all better start watching heartbreak high (2022) on netflix it has indigenous rep, autistic rep, non-binary rep, and representation for so many sexualities. it's not perfect but is such an amazing step in australian media and was genuinely a great teen drama to watch.
the soundtrack was SPECTACULAR and i was so !! at the use of just general australian language like having someone say "you're cooked" on a netflix show i- like it never felt cringe it just felt real lmao

I'm.
This is your.
FUCK ME GO WATCH DEADLOCH RIGHT NOW. It's so unbelievably.
Fuuuuck???? It's written and directed by the Kates, who also created the Katering Show. It's an Australian dark comedy-slash-crime drama. Episode six just came out on Amazon Prime and I cannot stop thinking about it.
It's just incredible.
Focuses around a big-city turned country-town cop, her wife, a detective from Darwin, a town with a population of probably less than 2000~ people, my personal favourite character Constable Abby Matsuda, and a string of murders. It's genuinely fantastic, I cannot recommend it more.
The language might be a bit much for some, the premise might be too gruesome for others, but I don't want to risk spoiling and I just cannot urge you to watch this show more desperately than this.

Heartbreak High honestly has the best representation that I think I've ever seen. Racial diversity and POC representation, queer rep including a non-binary person (an AMAB non-binary person which is so refreshing because so many people only think of non-binary people as being AFAB) and acespec rep, autism rep (an AUTISTIC GIRL which is so rare and I was so happy to see it, and played by an autistic actor). And it's also just SUCH A GOOD SHOW I LOVED IT. It was such a good and accurate representation of Gen Z, like I genuinely would believe that these people exist in real life. And the FASHION. MY GOD.
Please please go watch it because I really really need a second season it's just so good and it deserves more episodes. It's dramatic and comedic and serious and fun and just the right balance of realistic and entertaining.
Plus, on a personal note, because I really struggle with reading subtitles and the non-synching of dub I don't watch many things that aren't in English, and it was really nice to get a peice of media like this that is so absolutely non-American. It is so thoroughly and unapologetically Aussie and I loved it (I didn't understand all of it, had to google what eshay means, but I loved it).
Highly recommend.

i’m watching Wolf Like Me season 2 and i know i always talk about how much i love werewolf media but oh my godddd i love this show’s concept/portrayal of werewolves!! lycanthropy functions sort of as a metaphor for trauma - vibes of something happened and it changed me, something is different about me now, sometimes i just explode, i feel like a monster, i feel less than human, am i still loveable? am i still deserving of love? how do i return to normalcy after something like this?. and even when you’re healing, it doesn’t go away, it just changes and you learn to exist with this part of yourself. as someone with trauma and mental illness etc, wow this feels so relatable (in a metaphorical sense i mean lol). plus it’s australian so it’s relatable in that way too lol.

On the recommendation of two friends, I recently watched Deadloch, and it was incredible! Super funny, but the mystery is really compelling too. It both subverts and satirises crime drama tropes and archetypes as well as being a pointed social commentary. Oh, it's also incredibly feminist and critiques toxic masculinity and the patriarchy through that lens. Plus it’s a great buddy cop show! It works on a lot of levels in a way satire or spoofs can sometimes not work

Anyway, you've got the loose cannon renegade detective played pitch perfectly by Madeleine Sami (a lot of comments I saw elsewhere found her hard to bear at first, but she does mellow, and her being OTT was part of the point), the strait-laced (but not straight) local sergeant again played to perfection by Kate Box, and a whole host of wacky and often irritating (but never boring) characters, who, as I said, both play into archetypes of crime dramas but also real life stereotypes.
Tumblr media
It's hard to go into more of what I loved about it as a whole without giving away the reveals, so I'll just say I think it was all superbly done. It's a really well crafted show! Hopefully my gushing isn't too effusive but it's rare these days for me to get this sucked in and not be disappointed. It's also set up perfectly for a second so fingers crossed
Tumblr media
And for anyone looking for crime dramas with more queer characters, most of the women in the town are lesbians, and the main male cop is gay
(Sorry if any of this doesn’t make sense! It’s super hot today and I’m tired and meant to write this weeks ago haha)

More people should watch The Tourist, here are some reasons:
Australian Outback as the background (scary shit)
Interesting mystery
Good characters
It's only 6 episodes (season 2 in production)
Jamie Dornan looks very hot and dirty
Danielle Macdonald is so precious

December 11th Bonus Birthday Poll #1
Have you seen this childhood show: Splat-a-lot! (2011-2013), Canada, Australia, United Kingdom (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mod A: I loved this show when I was younger! It was a medieval themed obstacle course show that was inspired by Wipe-out (but was intended for kids). 12 kids have to make their way through an elaborate obstacle course in a most to get to the castle. When they get to the castle, the castle defenders can spray water/soap, throw balls, and do whatever it takes for them to slip down the stairs/walls. There were three rounds of this: Cross the Moat, Ditch the Dungeon, and Capture the Crown (which is the last 2 or 4 depending on the season). The person who survives the slippery course and gets the crown first wins. The worst castle defender gets punished (either by being catapulted into water or getting dunked with slime). This show was so fun to watch bc the castle defenders (of which there were 9 recurring characters) had their own lore within the show, and they were really funny in roasting the contestants! There was an Australian and British version, but they used the Canadian gameplay (they just had local hosts). It is my lifelong goal to explore the abandoned Splat-a-lot course (located in Ontario!)]

Quote
Australia's Indigenous people have over 60,000 years of history, and half of Australians were either born overseas or have a parent who was. But the media representing such a multicultural population remains disproportionately white. A 2022 study found more than three quarters of the reporters or presenters on Australian TV were from an Anglo-Celtic cultural background. The difference was even more pronounced at the leadership and board level.
